Introduction
This assessment will allow the student to experience and develop their understanding
of design to national standards and critical review the implications of their actions in
practice. The student will also be able to undertake surveys and correct the results
using contemporary instrumentation.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the assessment, the student should be able to:1. Apply national standards to produce robust designs in three dimensions. Critically
appraise the requirements of road and rail safety and environmental management
3. Undertake a design related to a real project; which will include a roundabout and
grade separated junction, vertical and horizontal railway schemes including
switches, crossings and stations.

The Brief
Highways:
You have been briefed by the Client (Owlthorpe Developments) to provide drawings
and details, to allow them to cost and submit planning proposals to redevelop the site
at Markeaton Street.
You have been supplied drawing showing the existing junction which is to be
upgraded to a three arm roundabout, with all works to be completed under a Section
278 to the existing adopted carriageway.
You are to design the alignment (based on TD16/07) of a new roundabout which has
the required capacity for the redevelopment of the site, tying into the Kedleston Road.
Your work is to be presented as a report with associated documents and A2 size
drawings (an electronic copy is also required).

Surveying:
You are to complete two field practicals, with associated calculations and adjustments,
at the National Watersports Centre. The tasks are:
1. Earth curvature and associated corrections along the rowing course from
pre-marked stations
2. Undertake a LASER scan of a small structure and produce a point cloud
(group exercise)

Submission Requirements
The assignment will need to be between 2000 words and 2500 words in length and
conform to the appropriate written assignment standard for the elements specified.

Plagiarism
An academic offence is committed when a student tries to gain improper advantage
for her/himself, or not following the Academic Regulations, concerning any part of the
assessment process. Please refer to the 3Rs statement
http://www.derby.ac.uk/academic-regulations

Submission Date
See face sheet.
The assignment must be handed in to the Student Information Centre at Brit Mill on or
before the date of submission. Late submission risks being penalised.
Return of Work
It is University policy that assignment work will normally be returned within a
maximum of three weeks after the date of submission. Under exceptional
circumstances eg due to illness or where work is retained for external examiners,
extended return dates may be published.
Please note that the three week period refers to semester weeks and does not
include student holidays like the Christmas or Easter break.
Work will normally be returned via student drawers or will be available for collection
from the lecturers office. Your module leader or lecturer will advise you which
method will be used

Performance Criteria
For a (FIRST) the student will have demonstrated a clear understanding of the design
standards quoting the related sections and applying relaxation when appropriate. The
solution provided will be constructible and reflect best practice for safety of all road
users. A Compelling case will have been made with in the recommendation
considering various viewpoints. The drawing will be to industry standard. The survey
work will be formally presented with robust calculations and the scan will be presented
in a professional format.
For a (SECOND DIV 1) the student will have demonstrated a good understanding of
the standards and designed in the main in accordance with them suggesting problems
and limitations. The resultant design will be workable with sketches and consideration
to key road users associated with the site. Robust recommendation will have been
formulated to justify the project. The survey work will demonstrate good field practice
in the amount of data captured and the drawing will be professionally presented.
For a (SECOND DIV 2) the student will have presented a reasonably competent
solution to the problem and main reference to the standards for fundamental elements
of the design, the scheme produced will be outline and consider the construction
practicalities for the site with car and PSV users considered. The recommendation will
provide a case for the solution presented. The survey will provide a suitable
calculations and demonstrate a understanding of the corrections involved, whilst the
drawings will be clear and logical.
For a (THIRD) the student will have presented an acceptable solution to the problem
with basic alignment and visibility issues addressed, some consideration will have be
given to the end user and finance/safety of the scheme. Basic recommendation will
have been drawn. The survey work will have been completed to a basic standard and
the drawings will be neat and scaled with key and titles as appropriate.
To FAIL the student will clearly not have understood the requirements of the brief and
elements of the work or results will be omitted or unclear. No comments and
conclusions will have been drawn and the work will not include related references.
Fundamental will not have been considered rendering the design unbuildable. The
survey work may have been omitted.
