Church of England views on homosexuality remain unclear on the basis of various instances
when church leaders have contradicted in their opinion over the issue. Conservative theologians
and politicians who are members of the Church of England consider homosexuality as another
behavior.
To them, homosexuality is what an individual does. They view homosexuality as a chosen
preference that can be changed. Thus, homosexuality is an abnormal, unnatural behavior that is
condemned by God.
Any attempt to consider and accept homosexuality as a natural and normal orientation should not
be accepted. According to them, accepting homosexuality will result in undesirable effects
because it will increase the overall number of people especially the youth who will opt to lead a
homosexual lifestyle.
On the other hand, liberal theologians, politicians, lesbians, gays, mental health experts, sexuality
researchers and others consider homosexuality as an orientation. They view homosexuality as
what an individual is. To them, homosexuality is not a chosen way of life. It is not changeable
but a normal and natural sexual orientation for some people in the current generation.

Thus, the church should support efforts that are aimed at supporting homosexuality.
They hold the view that accepting homosexuality will have desired effects including increased
acceptance of adults and youth with homosexual orientation. It will also lower frequency of
discrimination and oppression acts such as gay bashing.
Due to this disagreement at the fundamental level of the Church of England, consensus has not
been reached among the leadership of the church and members. Rational debate on the issue has
also not been held regarding the issue. Many analysts have concluded that change will be
effected only when one side of the church overpowers the other in terms of influence or simply
by schism.
On 15th February 2014, the House of Bishops of the Church of England declared that
homosexuality remains a sin. However, the church was not exclusively excommunicating those
practicing homosexuality. In the document that was entitled, Pastoral Guidance on Same Sex
Marriage, the bishops noted that the Church of England believed that individuals experiencing
attractions for the same sex persons are loved by God and should not simply be dismissed as
sinners.
The document was set against a swiftly changing or dynamic social landscape in England and it
was aimed at reminding the church chastity virtue as well as the need for regulating sexual
appetites as per the right reason and the scripture as designed by God for mankind.
