ONE FAMILYTHE CHURCH
What is especially life giving
about the Easter season is how it
shows us the saving presence of Christ in the
church and in the world. Our readings today are
especially rich. They disclose this saving presence in ways we are able to recognize and appreciate.
Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles
sets the stage for us. We see there is no little
dissension with what is being taught to those of
Gentile origin. And the church in Jerusalem
does understand the situation, and so it sends
additional representatives back to Antioch along
with Paul and Barnabas. Their message to the
Gentiles there is straightforward: It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us not to place on
you any burden beyond the necessities. It is the
church and not just one or two disciples making
the decision. And they are working with the Holy Spirit. This is powerful! Both in Antioch and
in Jerusalem the members are working together,
in communion with each other and with all
members, and with the Holy Spirit. This says so
much about how we as church are to beone
big family, brothers and sisters together in the
family of Christ, our savior and our brother.
The book of Revelation makes the same point.
The gates of the holy city have the names of the
twelve tribes of Israel inscribed on them, and the
layers of stone making up the foundation have
the names of the twelve apostles inscribed on
them. The old and the new make up one: Gods
people, Gods church.
Capping this theme of Gods people making up
one family we have our gospel reading with Jesus teaching his disciples: Whoever loves me
will keep my word, and my Father will love
him, and we will come to him and make our
dwelling with him. How could we ever become
more united in one family than through our love
for Christ and Gods love for us and within us?
