MEDIA RELEASE!
April 29, 2016!
The RELEASE hardly merits a response but a singular matter of note is that it is unattributed.
And in not being attributed, the RELEASE stands as a metaphor for what the laity is angry
about: A COMPLETELY ABSENT ARCHBISHOP, an archbishop who continues to dodge,
evade, sidestep, deceive, and hide from the very people he is sworn to lead and protect. !
But while the RELEASE itself bears no name, the email to which the RELEASE was attached
bears the name of the sender, Fr. Edivaldo Oliveira, with the instruction to contact him if there
are any further questions. We are thus left to conclude that the pastor of Chalan Pago parish
is now a Chancery official running the Archdiocese of Agana. !
Where is the Archbishop? Where is the Vicar General? Where is the Chancellor? Where is
anybody who is actually authorized canonically to speak in behalf of the Archdiocese of Agana
and address the diocese at large? This is what the laity are angry about: the absolute silence
and absence of the one man who was consecrated to guide and protect the Catholic faithful of
the Archdiocese of Agana, and his name is Anthony S. Apuron. !
In his RELEASE, Fr. Edivaldo attempts to run interference for the Archbishops unwillingness to
address the crisis in his diocese by noting that he already met with the protestors during his
pastoral visits to the parishes. This is frankly pathetic. At these meetings the Archbishop either
completely evaded questions or he pretended not to know what people were upset about. His
behavior at these visits is what infuriated the laity all the more and provided the singular
impetus for the outrage that exploded into view at the airport last Thursday night. !
Fr. Edivaldo also attempts to make the case that the demonstrators were trespassing when they
walked on to the grounds of the Seminary this past Tuesday and asked to see the Archbishop.
He compared their presence to an interference with the learning environment at a public school.
This is even more pathetic since there is no law forbidding a parent to walk into a public school
office and ask to see the principal. Whats more, the comparison to interfering with the
education of school children is absurd. The seminarians are not school children and the event
which drew the demonstrators to the Seminary was not an ordinary school day at the seminary
but the presence of Cardinal doing a series of talks to our parish priests. !
