Network License Version of SPSS

Products:
License Manager Software
For network licenses, SPSS products incorporate a license manager utility. The
utility is a continuously executing program that is installed on one computer on
your network. Whenever a user starts a network-licensed SPSS application, it
requests a license from the license manager. This utility will deliver licenses up
to a fixed number of simultaneous end users, determined by the license you
have purchased. After this number is met, any further requests for licenses are
refused. If you find that users are often being refused licenses, you can contact
your sales representative for a new license.
The license manager also records the number of active end-user sessions
and information about each of these sessions in its log file, which you can use
to troubleshoot connection problems.

Before You Start

Install the network version of the product. See \Installation
Documents\Network License Version of SPSS Products: Administrator's Guide
for installation instructions.

Installing the License Manager

If you have completed the network installation, DecisionTime and SPSS for
Windows have automatically installed the license manager software on the
computer from which you installed the SPSS product. Skip to the instructions
in the section "Configuring the License Manager".
For AnswerTree and Data Entry, you must manually install the license manager
software.
Manual Installation for AnswerTree and Data Entry
To manually install the license manager software, you must copy two files to
the appropriate directory on the computer whose IP address matches that for
which the product was licensed. If you do not know which IP address this is,
please contact your sales representative.

Note: These files will not be needed on each desktopthey are only needed on
the computer that runs the license manager.
Windows 95 or Windows 98
Locate the following two files on your AnswerTree CD-ROM, in
\Network\Win95:
spss_lmd.exe
spss_lmd.cpl

Copy these to your Windows\System directory or its equivalent.

Windows NT 4.0
Locate the following two files on your AnswerTree CD-ROM, in
\Network\Winnt:
spss_lmd.exe
spss_lmd.cpl

Copy these to your Windows\System32 directory or its equivalent.

Configuring the License Manager

After the license manager software is installed, a license manager applet called
SpssLM is added to your Control Panel. Follow the instructions below to
configure the license manager.
! From the Control Panel, double-click SpssLM.
! Click Settings.
! Configure the license manager for your network environment:
Debug mode.

If selected, the log files buffer is flushed after each write.

Full path to the directory containing the licenses. For more

information, see Directory Location of the License (*.lic) Files below. This
item is required. The default is the directory where you installed the SPSS
product. Note: Use a standard directory path to specify the key directory. Do not
use a UNC path name. For example, specify G:\MyServer\MyLicDir, not
\\MyServer\MyLicDir. Map a drive if necessary.

Key directory.

Full file specification of the license managers log file. If end users
have difficulty checking out licenses, the log file may shed some light on the
matter. This item is required. Note: Use a standard path, not a UNC path, to
specify the log file name.

Log file name.

Log file size limit.

The recommended setting is 64KB.

Resource file. Not

applicable to SPSS products.

Start time. Time delay when launching the license manager. This delay allows the
utility to reconnect to active clients after an interruption in service180
seconds is recommended.

If a client hasnt been heard from for a while, the license manager
assumes it has died. A good starting point is 180 seconds.

Zombie timeout.

Controls the amount of detail recorded in the log file. Level 3 records
the granting and returning of all licenses. Level 4 records the same information
as Level 3, plus all client connects and disconnects.

Verbosity.

On returning to the applets main dialog box, you can select whether the license
manager will start automatically each time the system is booted or manually via
the Launch pushbutton. Once you have made that selection, configuration of the
license manager is complete.
Directory Location of the License (*.lic) Files
License files are written to the SPSS product's installation directory by the
Setup program. The licenses may reside in the directory of your choosing as
long as they are accessible from the computer on which the license manager is
running. If you prefer to have them somewhere other than in the SPSS product's
installation directory, simply copy all *.lic files to the new directory. If you have
multiple SPSS products, all of the license files must reside in a single directory;
you will probably find it convenient to create a new directory where you keep
all of your *.lic files.

Starting the License Manager

The license manager must be started for end users to be able to run the
application.
To start the License Manager:
! From the Control Panel, double-click SpssLM.
! Click the Launch button.

Configuring Desktop Computers

If your end user computers are having trouble finding the license manager, you
should tell users to set the SPSS_LMHOST environment variable to the name
or IP address (preceeded by the @ character) of the computer on which the
license manager is running. Your users may also have trouble getting licenses if
this variable is improperly defined -- for example, if they have SPSS_LMHOST
set for another SPSS network application that was hosted on a different
computer, but is no longer in use.
Defining the Environment Variable
In Windows 95 or Windows 98
Add one of the following lines to the workstations autoexec.bat file and reboot:
set SPSS_LMHOST=@hostname

or
set SPSS_LMHOST=@ipaddress

In Windows NT or Windows 2000

! From the Control Panel, select the System applet.
! Click the Environment tab.
! For Variable, type SPSS_LMHOST.
! For Value, enter an @ and then the license managers hosts name or the hosts
IP address.
! Click Set.
! Click OK.
