License Manager Software
For network licenses, SPSS products incorporate a license manager utility. The
utility is a continuously executing program that is installed on one computer on
your network. Whenever a user starts a network-licensed SPSS application, it
requests a license from the license manager. This utility will deliver licenses up
to a fixed number of simultaneous end users, determined by the license you
have purchased. After this number is met, any further requests for licenses are
refused. If you find that users are often being refused licenses, you can contact
your sales representative for a new license.
The license manager also records the number of active end-user sessions
and information about each of these sessions in its log file, which you can use
to troubleshoot connection problems.
Note: These files will not be needed on each desktopthey are only needed on
the computer that runs the license manager.
Windows 95 or Windows 98
Locate the following two files on your AnswerTree CD-ROM, in
\Network\Win95:
spss_lmd.exe
spss_lmd.cpl
Key directory.
Full file specification of the license managers log file. If end users
have difficulty checking out licenses, the log file may shed some light on the
matter. This item is required. Note: Use a standard path, not a UNC path, to
specify the log file name.
Start time. Time delay when launching the license manager. This delay allows the
utility to reconnect to active clients after an interruption in service180
seconds is recommended.
If a client hasnt been heard from for a while, the license manager
assumes it has died. A good starting point is 180 seconds.
Zombie timeout.
Controls the amount of detail recorded in the log file. Level 3 records
the granting and returning of all licenses. Level 4 records the same information
as Level 3, plus all client connects and disconnects.
Verbosity.
On returning to the applets main dialog box, you can select whether the license
manager will start automatically each time the system is booted or manually via
the Launch pushbutton. Once you have made that selection, configuration of the
license manager is complete.
Directory Location of the License (*.lic) Files
License files are written to the SPSS product's installation directory by the
Setup program. The licenses may reside in the directory of your choosing as
long as they are accessible from the computer on which the license manager is
running. If you prefer to have them somewhere other than in the SPSS product's
installation directory, simply copy all *.lic files to the new directory. If you have
multiple SPSS products, all of the license files must reside in a single directory;
you will probably find it convenient to create a new directory where you keep
all of your *.lic files.
