Site License Version of SPSS

Products:
Administrators Guide
The SPSS product family includes desktop applications and distributed architecture applications
which are available in a Site License Version. The Site License Version differs from the
standard version of the product in that you, as the site license administrator, have the right to
redistribute the software to end users at your site. There are two ways that you can redistribute
the product to your end users:
n

Local desktop installation. Make the software CD-ROM available to end users so that they
can install it on their desktop computers, or

Network server installation. Install the software on a network server and set up end-user
computers to run the product from the network. End users can simultaneously run the
application from one installation on the server.

Desktop installation:
n

Improves performance over running the software from a network server.

Takes more disk space on the desktop computer (the complete software is installed on the
desktop).

Is more complicated for you to distribute and administer than a network installation.

Network installation:
n

May result in noticeably slower performance than a desktop installation, depending on your
network.

Saves disk space on the end users desktop computer (only a few application files are
placed on the desktop computer, although end users have full access to the complete
software).

Makes the process of distributing the software easier at larger sites.

Note: For SPSS distributed architecture applications, the information in this guide applies only
to the client, not the server component. If your SPSS product has a server component, you can
find information about it in your product administrators guide and in the server installation
instructions.

Before You Start

Locate the following information:
n

Your serial number, which is included on your CD-ROM case.

Your license code, which is included with your system on a separate sheet of paper. This
enables you and your users to install the SPSS product and any options that you have

purchased. If your license number is all zeros or if you cannot find it, call your sales
representative.

Desktop Installation
Follow these steps if youve decided distribute the software to your end users so that they can
install the product on their desktop computers.
Make the installation media available. Make as many copies of the product CD-ROM as you
need, or place it in a shared drive on your network.
Copy the installation instructions. Make as many copies of the product installation instructions
as you need. The installation instructions are on the CD-ROM in:
\Installation Documents\myproduct Installation Instructions.doc,
where myproduct is the name of your SPSS application.
Prepare licensing information. During installation the end user must enter licensing
information. Distribute this information to end users by printing the form included on the CDROM, customizing the information for your site, and making as many copies as you need. The
form is in:
\Installation Documents\Site License Version Individual Installation Instructions.doc.
Use the serial number and license code that you located before you started.
Distribute the installation materials to end users. Distribute the CD-ROM or CD-ROM location
on your network, installation instructions, and licensing information, to the end users.

Network Installation
If youve decided to install the software on a network server, follow the instructions in:
\Installation Documents\Site and Network License Versions Installation on a
Network.doc.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The minimum hardware and software required to run the product can be found in the product
installation instructions ( in \Installation Documents\myproduct Installation
Instructions.doc).
