2. EXPLANATION OF TERMINOLOGY
1) Air Conditioning:
Keeping room air in an optimum condition, depending on the use or purpose. (Cooling, heating, humidity regulatiog,
air cleaning, etc.)
3) Humidity
(1) Absolute humidity: The amount of vapor contained in the air. Generally it is equal to the amount of vapor by g unit
contained in 1m3 air, and is expressed in g/m3.
(2) Relative humidity: The ratio between the amount of vapor contained in the air and the maximum amount (the
amout of saturated vapor) of vapor capable of containing at that temperature in %.
*Relative humidity= Actual vapor pressure/Saturated vapor pressure x 100
= Actual vapor pressure of dew point temperature/saturated vapor pressure of dry-dulb temp.
x 100
(3) Dew point temperature: The surface temperature which starts dewing on the surface when it is cooled in the air.
4) Heat
(1) Latent heat and sensible heat:
Heat which causes a change in the state of a substance, with its temperature being constant, is called latent heat
whereas heat which changes the temperature of a substance is called sensible heat. Latent heat is expressed in
terms of calories needed to cause a change of state of a substance per 1 kg. The following equation shows that Q
Kcal is needed to change state of a substance weight G Kg when the latent heat is L Kcal/kg. (Q=GL)
5) Quantity of heat
(1) Kcal: Adding or releasing heat to or from a substance changes its temperature. This change of temperature is in
proportion the heat added or released This heat is called calorie which is expressed in Kcal or cal. 1 Kcal is
equal to the amount of heat required to raise the 1C Temperature of 1kg water 4C.
(2) BTU: 1 BTU is equal to the amount of heat required to raise the 1F temperature of 1 lb water.
1 Kcal=3.968 BTU, 1 BTU=0.252 Kcal
7) Pressure:
Pressure p is the normal (perpendicular) force exerted by a fluid per unit area against which the force is exerted.
Absolute pressure is the measure of pressure above zero; gauge pressure is measured above existing atmospheric
pressure. the unit used for pressure is newtons per square meter (N/m2), also called a pascal (Pa). The newton is a
unit of force. Standard atmospheric pressure is 101,325 Pa=101.3 kPa.
8) Specific heat:
The specific heat of a substance is the quantity of energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass by 1 K.
9) Horse Power(Hp)
1 Hp = 0.75 KW = 645 Kcal/h, 1W = 086 Kcal/h

11) Compressor:
Absorb and compress the low pressure gasified refrigerant in evaporator and let it flow into condenser. At this time,
the low pressure is to be kept in evaporator and the refrigerant gas flows into condenser as high pressure condition.
The most economical condition of compressor for an proper operating is when the refrigerant gas absorbed into
compressor is in dry-saturated condition. The overly-heated suction gas may cause the mechanical ability o
compressor to be reduced and the cylinder clearance of compressor to be re-expanded, and as a result, the
refrigerant may be used without its refrigerating effect. The types of compressor is Recipro. type, Rotary type, Scroll
type, Screw type, etc. and consists of cylinder, piston, vane, shaft, bearing, case and accumulator for structure
reason.
12) Condenser:
The high temperature/high pressure refrigerant gas compressed by compressor is sucked into condenser and
liquified by cooling. The condenser is cooled by the forced-convection of fan. The calorie emitted from condenser is
equal to the sum of the heat absorbed in evaporator and the calorie used for compressor operationg.
13) Evaporator:
Absorb the heat from room air by forced-convection
The liquid refrigerant in evaporator is evaporated by absorbing heat from room air and flowed into compressor as a
gasified state. The evaporating temperature of refrigerant is decided by pressure, which is decided by the
temperature of suction air and the wind flow, and the pressure in evaporator is normally 5Kg/cm2G and the
evaporating temperature is 5~8C
15) Dryer:
Any moisture in refrigerating cycle may cause the compressor motor to be damaged or turn into an ice state it self
in the middle of cycle, which blocks the flow of refrigerant. Dryer is installed in a cycle for the purpose of removing
such moisture.
There are two types of dryer; a liquid line dryer which is connected serially to the condenser outlet and a suction line
dryer which is connected serially to the suction line, with a desiccative in dryer.
The dryer is designed for uni-directional flowing of the refrigerant.
16) Strainer:
Strainer serves to remove foreign substances from refrigerant by a metal net pelt of fine grid or a glass wool being
inserted into metal vessel and refrigerant being passed through between the interval. The mounted position is
between condenser and capillary expansion valve.
18) Motor:
Generates a rotating force by electric power and supply the driving force to fan and blower in both indoor and
outdoor of air conditioner.
19) Fan:
Generates forced air flow. The forced air passes throngh heat-exchanger and blow out the heat (or give the heat on
the contrary) from heat-exchanger.
A Fan can be classified by axial fan and radial fan. Generally we call axial fan (mostly propellar fan) as (Fan).
21) Thermostat:
Sense the temperature of air or heat exchangers and controlls automatically room temperature by switching
compressor on/off depending on temperature. Thermostat is used for a mechanical type model and thermistor for a
micom type control method.
22) Capacitor:
Get shift the phase of input electricity for compressor or fan motor, which leads starting direction and torque to the
compressor motor or fan motor for aircon and make the operating efficiency better during operation.
25) Accumulator:
A kind of liquid refrigerant separator which prevents the liquid refrigerant getting into compressor and is installed in
the suction inlet of compressor.

The gas of high temperature and high pressure in compressor is cooled by air in condenser and liquified by a
condensing heat.
3) Expansion:
With passing through the capillary tube, the high pressure refrigerant liquified in condenser turns into a low pressure
condition, which is easy to evaporate.
4) Evaporation:
The liquid refrigerant of low temperature and low pressure passed though the capillary tube absorbs the room air heat
in evaporator and evaporates into a gas.

7. Vacuum Method
The purpose of vacuum is to remove air and moisture in the refrigerant system.
It is important to vacuum in the system. Air and moisture in the system may cause Pressure-rising, operating energy
loss, compressor deterioration and freezing.
In case that there is no remaining refrigerant in the tube because of leakage and repairs, vacuum by opening the gas
side and the liquid side service valve.
After the pipe connection of indoor and outdoor, must vacuum the tube after close the liquid side and the gas side
service valve.
If vacuum is made completely, start directly to charge refrigerant in order not to be intruded by open air.
And in case that required to discharge refrigerant for after-service, discharge slowly and do vacuum in order not to
discharge refrigerating oil of the compressor.

<Note> About pressure of the refrigerant cycle.
If an actual temperature is low, the pressure become low.
If the amount of refrigerant is insufficient, the pressure become low.
Dust is attached to the filter of indoor unit, the pressure of the low pressure part become low for decreasing amount of
the wind
By blocking the air suction of outdoor unit, decreasing amount of the wind make an operation of OLP.
- In case of becoming low in low pressure part:
evaporator an suction pipe is freezing.
- In case that the refrigerant is too much:
If aircon operates in a low actual temperature, evaporator and suction pipe is freezing.
- In case that the refrigerant is too small: overheating compressor operates overload.

3. MOTOR
The motor is used to rotate the indoor and outdoor fan so that the room air can be recirculated.
4. FAN
BLOWER FAN: The Blower draws hot air from the room through the Evaporator and then discharges it back into the
cool air. It circulates the room air.
PROPELLER FAN: The propeller draws outdoor air through louvering and cools Condenser, and then blows the hot
air out.
5. CAPACITOR
The Capacitor enlarges the difference of phase between main coil and sub coil so that the Compressor and Fan Motor
starts well.
6. ACCUMULATOR
The Accumulator blocks the unflow of liquid refrigerant and impurities into the Compressor.

A cutaway view of the rotary compressor is shown in Figure 1-1. The stator is rigidly attached to the compressor
shell(Middle Shell) and the rotor is pressed onto the eccentric shaft of the pump assembly. The accumulator is
directly connected with pump assembly. Both the discharge valve and discharge muffler are attached to the motor
bearing. The pump bearing provides a thrust surface for the shaft and the rolling piston. Compressed gas is
separated from the suction gas by the vane. Discharge gas pressure and the vane spring keep the vane in contact
with the rolling piston.
143
b. Compression process
The compression process indicated in Fig. 1-2. To separate the high and low pressure areas, the rolling piston and
eccentric shaft are fitted in the cylinder with a vane which is located in the cylinder slot. As the eccentric shaft
turns, suction gas flows through the suction inlet and into the cylinder area(1). As the shaft rotates through 90, the
rolling piston moves to right position(2), and Gas in compression volume has been compressed above suction
pressure. When the crank angle is reached 180 (3), the rolling piston moves to bottom dead center and both the
compressed gas and suction gas volumes are now equal. Another 90 of shaft rotation is shown in (4).
Compressed gas has reached a pressure sufficient to open the discharge valve, and flows from the cylinder into
the compressor shell. After another 90 of shaft rotation, the entire precess begins again.
The major design requirements and precision fit and optimum clearance. The rolling piston is not in actual contact
with the cylinder wall vane, or bearing faces. Hydrodynamic sealing witch is dependent upon clearance, surface
speed, oil viscosity, and sufave finish of the components, prevents leakage from the compressed gas volume to
the suction volume via these paths. In addition, the line contact between the vane to and the rolling piston requires
careful selection and control of materials to provice wear resistance and reliable long-term operation.

(7) Size
In the rotary compressor, the shell and motor stator are in direct contact. The shell, as a matter of fact, is shrunk fit
around the stator and the pump is welded to the shell without internal suspension system. Reciprocating
compressors typically are internally spring mounted to isolate the compression mechanism from the shell.
Elimination of this suspension system allows the shell size to be smaller for a rotary than for a reciprocating
compressor of the same capacity.
146
3. Compressor Replacement
In case of rotary compressor failure in the field, the failed compressor must be replaced by the new one because it
is impossible to repair compressor itself in the field. The cause of compressor failure often results from systems
electric curcuit failures. Therfore, such cause must be traceed and eliminated when compressor is replaced.

(3) Discharged gas state (the state at compressor outlet or condenser inlet) :
An adiabatic change is almost seen in compressor, so the state of discharged gas follows the isentropic line at
point B of Figure 7.4. Accordingly the state point of discharge gas is the intersection with wet-vapor pressure
18.1 kg/cm2 abs entrophy 1.138kcal/kg K at condensation temperature 46C, and is a point of pressure
18.1kg/cm2 abs, temperature 75C, enthalpy 158.0Kcal/kg, specific volume 0.00152m3/kg, entropy 1.182
Kcal/kg K, and superheat 30C. (Figure 7.4)
For the refrigerating cycle a-b-e-f as shown in Figure 7.7, if the cooling capacity of condenser increases by the
temperature down of saturated liquid, cooling water or air and then the temperature of condenser outlet
refrigerant liquid decreases, the refrigerating cycle will be a-b-e-f. Likewisely, the temperature difference when
the temperature of condenser outlet refrigerant liquid is below the temperature of saturated liquid at that
pressure is called the degree of supercooling, which enhances the refrigerating effect. The effect of
supercooling is as follows.

2. Discomfort index(DI)
In summer, Discomfort Index is frequently used in the weather forecast on TV or newspapers. Man feels hot or dry
according as the relative humidity is high or low, but not the absolute humidity. Generally, now that we feel
discomfortable at high relative humidity, the state which is felt uncomfortable at both dry-bulb and wet-bulb
temperature may be expressed empirically as an equation, Discomfort Index (DI), which is used as an emotional
index for summer temperature and humidity condition.
* DI = (Wet-bulb temperature + Dry-bulb temperature) x 0.72+40.6

3. Dewing
The most damp condition of air is at the saturated air condition of relative humidity 100% which is unable to contain
moisture any longer. As a result, the water vapor (moisture) in the air is condensed and turned into liquid as
waterdrop which can be seen. Such phenomenon is called dewing or condensation, commonly sweating.
Dew point temperature means the temperature of air when starting to form dew. For example, when taking out a
bottle of beer from refrigerator in summer, you have probably seen several times the surface of beer bottle sweats,
that is, waterdrop form. The phenomenon is because the moist air around the bottle of beer is changed repidly into
a state beyond relative humidity 100% with rapid cooling below the dew point temperature, and the vapor in the air
not contained forms dew. Maybe you have ever experienced damages that summer cooling in your house caused
the bedclothes in wardrobe to be damp by de wing or the winter heating caused to form dew on window and
waterdrop to flow into wall or floor carpet.
Dewing prevention
Such a fine particle (vapor in air) that its shadow or shape has never appeared is rapidly cooled when it touches a
cold substance below dew point temperature. That is, shocking or starting by rapid cooling causes waterdrops to
be emerged out; dewing.
It is necessary to prevent from dewing in room because it gives trouble. For example, in order to keep room
windows from dewing in heating, insulation effect should be increased by making room humidity down or using a
double window.
Americans frequently does not humidify when heating, and if humidifying, they lower room humidity considerably.

2. Sound attenuation
The sound pressure level Lp[dB] at r[m] from a point sound source is composed of the following equation.
Lp= Lw+10 log (Q/4r2+4/R)
Lw : Power level of sound source
R : Real integer
Q : Directional factor (Spherical sound : 2, Semi-spherical sound : 2)
Generally the noise level Lpr (dB) at r[m] from the sound source is
Lpr = Lps - 20 log r + C
* Lps : Sound source level (dB)
C : Characteristics of sound sources including a point sound source and plane sound source
And the noise level Lp1 and Lp2 at r1 and r2 from noise source is
Lp1 = Lps - 20 log r1 + C, Lp2 = Lps - 20 log r2 + C
Therefore, eliminate Lps, and Lp2 = Lp1 + 20 log r1/r2
Example) In a condition the four condensers of noise level
50dB are placed parallelly, what is the complex
noise at point A? And what is the sum of noise at
background noise 35dB and 1m distance?
1) The noise level at point A of each aircon is ;
Lpa = Lpb = 50+20 log 1/2=44.0
Lpc = 50+20 log 1/3 = 40.5
Lpd = 50+20 log 1/4 = 38.0
2) Considering the noise source, the complex noise level is;
L = 10 log (1044/10+1044/10+1040.5/10+1038/10+1035/10)=48.5(dB)

(3) Rough selection of capacity
Considering the above (2), add the clearance rate by 10% each except for lecture room, kitchen, or special
area, and select the capacity.
The nominal area is selected on the basis of outdoor 35C and indoor 27C, but actually the temperature in
condenser is higher than standard condition according to summer hottest temperature and condenser
installation condition, so the capacity selection by the rough method does not matter.

The pressure fluctuation is affected by the tube length or insulation as
well as temperature change, so measure the pressure (P2) of low

2. Precautions on repair
1) When discharging refrigerant (from pipe or body), the discharge outlet should direct the direction where
nobody exists.
2) Do not work near fire or flame.
3) Work in a large space if possible and arrange the scaffold.
4) Especially for working on rooftop, prepare a place to keep tools and take care to prevent from falling.
5) While running (pump down work, test run), do not insert hands into fan.
6) Clean the indoor-outdoor connecting pipes and the manifold gauge edges to be free from dust or moisture.
7) Be sure to fill refrigerant to the specified level. (If refrigerant is too much or short, the capacity is down and
trouble may occur.)
8) Keep tools well, and check the measuring machine periodically.

1) Principle of operation
LED is a kind of crystal by PN junction.
When supplying a constant voltage, in order to re-combine an electron and hole by light emission, electron moves
from N area to P-N junction side and hole moves from P area to P-N junction side. A free electron is to be a
combined state, and at that time the set free is emitted as light. The color of light is decided by crystal and an
addition.

To judge diode as good or poor, supply a positive voltage and negative voltage to diode by the battery of tester
as shown in Figure below and judge through the movement of tester dial by multimeter. If the resistance ratio of
positive voltage and negative voltage is 100:1 or voer, the two diodes are judged good.
For a silicon diode, however, the resistance of reverse firection is an infinity.

3. Capacitor
1) Principle of capacitor
As shown in the right Figure, put electrode plate A and B of area
S with separating at a constant interval d in vacuum, input
voltage V, and charge of Q=CV(C) is stored between electrodes.
Where, the capacity of capacitor formed by CSMS electrode A
and B is expressed by the following equation.

2) Electrolytic capacitor
Generally, electrolytic capacitor is used for the charge or discharge of power supply and also for voltage stabilizer.
Upon the charging of power supply, the capacity of capacitor is regarded s the area of bottom and the charging
time is in propotion to the resistor value and the capacitor capacity as shown in Figure below.
That is, the closed the mesh of net is and the broader the bottom of bottle is, the longer water filling time is.

3) Ceramic capacitor
Generally, ceramic capacitor is used for noise removal.
The resistor component of capacitor is in inverse proposition to frequency.
Namely,
1
Xc = ( 2fc )
Most noise is a harmonic component, so Xc becomes very low and by-passes noise into ground potential to
prevent circuit from malfunction.

4. Resistor
Resistor is an element that inhibits the flow of current. Compared with the water flow as shown in Figure below, the
resistance is the same as the mesh of net.
If mesh is dense, the water flow is weaken. Likewisely, if resistance is bigger, the current flow becomes weaken.
Namely, V (voltage) = I (current) x R (resistor)
I(current) =

5. Thermistor
1) NTC thermistor (NTC = Negative Temperature Coefficient)
It is a resistance element against temperature sensor by a temperature coefficient of semiconductor. The
resistance decreases if temperature increases. Therefore it is used when converting the temperature change into
an electric signal.

6. Varistor
Varistor is a voltage dependent resistance which the resistance is changed by input voltage. When voltage
increases on both ends of varistor, the internal resistance decreases rapidly at a certain voltage (or called as
varistor voltage) level.
The voltage at both terminals does not exceed a certain value due to the flow of overcurrent. Due to such reasons,
varistor uses the primary side of power supply circuit to absorb surge voltage. If power is ON, instantaneously
overcurrent flows, so that in case of lighning, varistor itself is destructed to protect the body.

In case of using an airconditioner in a low voltage area where power supply voltage is low, especially, the Filcker
voltage due to inadequate wires may cause the fluorescent light to be off or may affect the other electric product.
So, care should be taken to the wiring work.

2-5 Thermostat
There are 3 kinds of thermostat malfunction.
1) Leak of gas charged in sensor part
2) Short of contact point
3) Wrong wiring
Switch off at room temperature 18-30C, turn carefullu the knob of thermostat from 1 to 10 (the number may be
different or a figure be used according to model) or reversely, and click sounds.
After the sound is heard, turn reversely to check again the click sounds.
If click sounds, the thermostat is in normal. If room temperature exceeds 30C, test should be done after cooling
by putting the sensor part of thermostat into a cold water container because the contact point is not opened.
If knob is turned but click does not sound, remove the thermostat cover and examine the contact point.
The fused contact point should be replaced with a now thermostat.
If contact point is not closed despite of the sensor temperature being sufficiently high, the gas at the sensor part
may be leaked. In this case, replace the thermostat.
When replacing thermostat, be sure to conduct after performing carefully as the above content.
2-6 Thermistor
Pull out the lead wire of thermistor terminal to test continuity.
Connect a tester to the terminal of thermistor and measure the resistance. The resistance value varies
according to the measuring condition and temperature, so in order to vary temperature forcibly, put water in a
cup, cool the sensor part of thermistor, and then measure the resistance, and also measure in a condition that
the sensor part of thermistor becomes warm by hands.
