Abstract

Background : Contact Lens is a product to help people with refractive visual

disorders, it perform to replace the function of eyeglasses. Expanding the
functions and types of contact lenses followed by increasing the users of contact
lens in the world and in Indonesia nowadays. This study was conducted to
determine the characteristic of contact lens users in 1st and 2nd grade of Senior
High School in Jambi City.
Methods: This research was a descriptive design study. From 177 students in 1st
and 2nd grade as a population were taken 70 students as a minimum sample of
this study. The sample in this population was decided by use Lameshow design
and the total of the sample for each school determined by means of proportional
stratified sampling. For the determination of the sample were collected by simple
random sampling. A total of 89 respondents Contact Lens users are given
questions to fill in the checklist contains questions about the use of contact lenses.
Results: A total of 98.7% of the respondents are women, 100% of respondents
used Planned Replacement, 64.0% of respondents wear for cosmetic purpose,
84.3% of respondents had never consulted the eye doctor before using Contact
Lenses, 93.3 % of respondents have never done periodic evaluation to an
ophthalmologist, 89.9% of respondents did not visit a doctor when had a
symptoms of eye, 73.0% of respondents have used contact lenses for more than 12
months, 75.3% of respondents use less than 8 hours in day, 57.1% of respondents
took off Contact Lenses at noon (after school), 76.4% of the respondents had
more than one symptom in question, 76.4% of respondents did not used Contact
Lens when experience of symptoms that asked, 93.3% of respondents wash their
hands before and after contact lens used, 100% of respondents put it back their
contact lens to the box after used it, 84.3% of respondent clean up first their
contact lens before put it into the box, 94.5% respondents did not clean up the
contact lenses with water flowing.
Conclusion: Overall the respondent has followed the right procedures for using
Contact Lenses. However, the students have to consult to ophthalmologist before
decide to use the Contact Lenses and then have to do an examination regularly.

ABSTRAK
Latar Belakang : Lensa kontak merupakan alat bantu penglihatan,digunakan
sebagai pengganti kacamata. Berkembangnya fungsi serta jenis lensa kontak
diikuti dengan bertambahnya jumlah pengguna lensa kontak didunia dan di
Indonesia saat ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik
pengguna lensa kontak pada siswa kelas 1 dan 2 Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri
(SMAN) di Kota Jambi.
Metode : Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Dari 177 Siswa kelas 1 dan 2
diambil 70 orang selaku sampel penelitian. Metode pengambilan sampel dengan
rumus Lameshow, dan jumlah sampel untuk masing-masing sekolah ditetapkan
dengan cara Proportional Stratified Sampling. Untuk penetapan sampel diambil
dengan cara Simple Random Sampling. Sebanyak 89 Responden pengguna Lensa
Kontak diberikan pertanyaan untuk mengisi checklist yang telah berisi pertanyaan
seputar penggunaan lensa kontak.
Hasil : Sebanyak 98,7% responden merupakan perempuan, 100% responden
menggunakan Planned Replacement, 64,0% responden memakai Lensa Kontak
karena alasan Kosmetik, 84,3% responden tidak pernah melakukan konsultasi ke
dokter mata sebelum menggunakan Lensa Kontak, 93,3% responden tidak pernah
melakukan evaluasi berkala ke dokter mata, 89,9% responden tidak melakukan
kunjungan kedokter mata ketika mengalami gejala, 73,0% responden telah
menggunakan Lensa Kontak lebih dari 12 bulan, 75,3% responden menggunakan
Lensa Kontak kurang dari 8 jam, 57,1% responden melepas Lensa Kontak pada
siang hari (jam 12.00-14.00 atau sepulang sekolah), 76,4% responden mengalami
lebih dari satu gejala yang ditanyakan, 76,4% responden menyatakan tidak
memakai (melepaskan) Lensa Kontak ketika mengalami gejala yang ditanyakan,
93,3% responden mencuci tangan mereka sebelum dan sesudah memakai Lensa
Kontak, 100% responden menyimpan kembali Lensa Kontak kedalam wadahnya,
84,3% responden membersihkan terlebih dahulu Lensa Kontak sebelum
dimasukan ke wadah penyimpanan, 94,5% responden menyatakan tidak
membersihkan lensa kontak dengan air mengalir.
Kesimpulan : Secara keseluruhan para responden yang merupakan siswa SMAN,
telah mengikuti prosedur penggunaan Lensa Kontak yang baik dan benar. Namun,
seharusnya siswa calon pengguna haruslah berkonsultasi kepada dokter mata
sebelum memutuskan untuk menggunakan Lensa Kontak. Kemudian dilanjutkan
dengan evaluasi secara berkala.
