Newaygo Home and Garden Show WEEKS

The crowds came early and stayed late at
the inaugural Home and Garden Show in
Newaygo. Drawn by the chance to win one
of the great door prizes highlighted by a
42” Flat Screen TV provided by Miller And
Shepherd Law Firm, the attendees found
plenty to draw their interest at over 40 ven-
dor booths in the cafeteria of the Newaygo
Middle School.
Vendors included experts in a wide variety
of areas: home remodeling, decoration and
repair, and landscape design; financial plan-
ning and mortgage services; mind and body
wellness including nutrition, exercise, and
general health care. A variety of food vendors
provided everything from healthy snacks to
complete lunches.
The show also featured seminars and dem-
onstrations covering the latest home and
garden topics and trends.
Speaking for the Newaygo Chamber of
Commerce, the show sponsor, Terrie Ort-
wein, the Chamber Executive Director, said
that attendance exceeded expectations. “ We
originally prepared 250 gift bags for the day
and handed those out in the first two hours.
We stuffed 250 more and still ran out. Need-
less to say attendance was just terrific.” Jeff
Coil from Vantage Pointe Financial Group and
chairman of the show organizing committee
echoed Terrie’s thoughts. “We’re really very
pleased” said Jeff. There was something for
everybody here and all the attendees I spoke
with found real value in the show. And that is
really the most important thing. We expect it
will be even bigger and better next year.

lected to participate in Nationals’ 2010 Miss
Teen Grand Rapids/Lansing pageant com-
petition that will take place on May 15, 2010.
Tiffini learned of her acceptance into this year’s
competition as Nationals, Inc. announced their
selections on Monday afternoon. Tiffini submit-
ted an application and took part in an interview
session that was conducted by Anna Klejnows-
ki, this year’s Grand Rapids/Lansing Pageant
Coordinator.

Pick the Right
Insurance
First, determine how much
insurance you’re required to
have. Most states require liabil-
ity insurance, which covers you
if you cause an accident injur-
ing another person or damaging

When picking your liability
limits — the maximum an in-
surance company will pay in the
event of that type of claim — a
good rule of thumb is to review
your car insurance and buy a
policy with similar limits and

Collision covers damages from

Scientists now have a few more
genetic clues about a leading cause
of visual impairment and blindness
in older Americans—age-related
macular degeneration (AMD).
That’s because a large-scale col-
laborative study, supported by the
national Eye Institute (nEI), part
of the national Institutes of Health,
has identified three new genes as-
sociated with this eye disease—two
playing a role in the cholesterol
pathway in the eye. AMD gradually
destroys sharp, central vision. Cen-
tral vision is needed for seeing ob-
jects clearly and for common daily
tasks such as reading and driving.
The results of the study were pub-
lished in the Proceedings of the na-
tional Academy of Sciences.
Said Paul A. Sieving, M.D.,
Ph.D., nEI director, “This study in-
creases our understanding of DnA
variations that predict individual
risks of AMD and provides clues for
developing effective therapies.”
The study shed light on a new
biological pathway for AMD dis-
ease development, by uncovering
genes in the high-density lipopro-
tein (HDL) pathway associated with
AMD risk. HDLs are among a fam-
ily of lipoproteins that transport
essential fats, such as cholesterol,
through the bloodstream. It’s be-
lieved that early stages of AMD are
affected by accumulated products of
cholesterol and other fats in a layer
of cells in the back of the eye.
The relationship between HDL
cholesterol levels in the blood and
AMD is still unclear, but the re-
searchers have uncovered a major

teens, compared to 25.4 in metro areas.
The Department of Motor Vehicles re-

Montcalm counties; all involved speed and/

memories. One of them is the fire escape where students from the second floor slid through a
large tube to the ground level. The tube exit is shown at the bottom left in the picture.

Tri County Area Schools was formed when Howard City High
School and Sand Lake High School merged together in 1962. Many
people have only known Sand Lake as having an elementary, because,
since 1965, the school building was used for just that. But there’s more
to our town than an elementary. As history shows us, Sand Lake had
a large brick high school that housed grades kindergarten through
twelfth grade. Below are the details of this history.
In 1907, a new four-room school was built in the center of the town
of Sand Lake. This was the first school known as the Sand Lake High
School (it held 13 grades).
In 1923, Sand Lake erected a two-story brick school building that
housed 12 classrooms. This building was located just west or possibly

In 1936, the first school bus was purchased and Dee Sawrey was the
first driver.
In 1957, a new elementary building was built east of the 1923 two-
story school building. The new building had four rooms and a boiler
room. This building is now part of the present elementary building
(current fourth-grade classrooms).
In 1962 the last class graduated from “Sand Lake High School.”
There were 13 graduates.
In the fall of 1962, Sand Lake School students in grades 9th through
12th merged with Howard City High School students at the Edgerton
building in Howard City. The 7th and 8th grade students from Howard
City School joined the 7th and 8th grade students at the Sand Lake
High School.
In 1964, an addition was added to Sand Lake Elementary. It included
an all purpose room (the present gymnasium), kitchenette, and two
class rooms at the east end of the existing elementary.
In February of 1965, grades 9-12 moved into the new high school
on Kendaville Road. The board of education made the decision to close
Sand Lake High School (built in 1923) and the Pierson School. They
designated the old Howard City High School (Edgerton Building) as
the Tri County Middle School housing grades 5-8th and Pierson’s 4th
grade.
In October 1966, the two-story building (pictured) known as Sand
Lake High School, was torn down.
In 1967, Sand Lake Elementary had an addition of five classrooms,

but I let life got in the way several times and I just never got a rhythm back! I am definitely realizing that

Wound Healing Program Now Available

at Spectrum Health United Hospital
GREENVILLE, MI., May 3, 2010 – Specialized care for chronic wounds is now
available at Spectrum Health United Hospital. The Wound Healing Program treats a
variety of wounds including ulcers resulting from poor blood flow in the arteries or
veins, diabetic foot and leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, wounds caused by radiation treat-
ments, and post-surgical wounds.
It is estimated that more than two million Americans have wounds that fail to heal for a
variety of reasons, such as circulatory problems, diabetes, arthritis, kidney disease, age,
diet and smoking. Without proper treatment, these wounds may become infected or in
some cases even require amputation if not treated quickly and effectively.
The Wound Healing Program at United Hospital is closely affiliated with the full-time
Wound Healing Program at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and is committed to pro-
viding wound care services locally. The wound care team coordinates care with other
members of the medical community, including primary care physicians. Unique among
wound treatment programs in West Michigan, the team-oriented approach may combine
expertise of vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, plastic surgeons,
podiatrists, infectious disease physicians, and orthotic and prosthetic specialists.
“We recognized wound care as being a much-needed service in our area,” said Adam
Post, RN, director of the United Hospital Wound Healing Program. “For the comfort
and convenience of our patients, we can now offer wound care every week in Green-
ville through providers that have access to full-time wound therapy experts in Grand
Rapids.”
The Wound Healing Program is overseen by Richard Hodgson, MD. He is a graduate of
University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He is board certifi ed in internal
medicine, as well as undersea and hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Hodgson is a trained diving
medical officer and a certified diving medical examiner.
“Wound care provides a wide variety of effective treatment options for patients not
responding well to traditional therapies,” said Dr. Hodgson. “I have been specializing in
wound care for more than 12 years and the feedback from both patients and physicians
has been extremely positive.”
Providing this specialized service locally has been a goal of Spectrum Health United
Hospital administrators for a number of years. “This is truly a unique opportunity to
bring this level of expertise to our hospital on a consistent basis,” said Brian Brasser,
chief nursing officer for United Hospital.
Dr. Hodgson concurred, saying “our team recognized the difficulty often associated
with travel, especially for individuals with chronic wounds. By partnering with United
Hospital, we can ease that burden considerably.”

Orbs
Some of you may have noticed those “artifacts” in your digital photographs. Usually they
are round, white spheres. I first noticed them when we traveled to Egypt. Some of the flash
pictures had these orbs in them. I disregarded these things initially as dust particles on the
lens.
Lately, however, we have become aware of some research that shows that these orbs may
actually be more significant. It seems that the now popular digital cameras, especially the
cheaper ones, are able to record some infra-red light. The better cameras have infra-red filters
and often the orbs are not seen with them. The theory is that light from the flash is absorbed
by the orb, then accelerated within the orb and spit back out at a different wavelength. This
is called fluorescence, much like the “glow in the dark” items we are familiar with.
So, the big question is, what, if any, is the significance of these orbs? There are many
theories about these things. Some people feel they are just dust, bugs, or pollen particles that
have been caught on the photo. Most people, who have studied them,
think that the orbs are not artifacts. Some feel that these may represent
the energy of angels or the spirits of people who have past away. That is
somewhat hard to prove, but interesting to think about.
So experiment yourself. Take some flash pictures, then get really quiet
and invite more orbs to come into the room. Then take some more
pictures. Many times there will be many more orbs present. There are
no indications that this phenomenon is harmful in any way. We do have
some videos at the Healing Center that show some of the research, if you
are interested. Anyway, have fun, and take lots of pictures.
