Storyboard AECT Standard 4.2.

1
Narration: The Association for
Educational Communications and
Technology has organized its
performance standards for personnel in
the field of educational communications
and instructional technology in
accordance with the five domains of the
field. These are design, development,
utilization, management, and evaluation.
As part of standard 4, management
(highlight), this tutorial pertains to substandard 4.2, resource management and
is meant to document performance
indicator 4.2.1 which stipulates that
candidates should be able to apply
resource management techniques in
various learning and training contexts.
Animation: Animate standards. Highlight standard 4. Animate sub-standard and
performance indicator.
Narration: Let us first clarify what
resource management is. According to
Seels and Richey, resource management
involves planning, monitoring, and
controlling resource support systems and
services.
This includes the documentation and
justification of cost effectiveness,
effectiveness and efficiency for learning,
necessary resources, like personnel,
budget, supplies, time, facilities, and
instructional resources.

Narration: Front Row is an adaptive,
standards-based mathematics and
English language arts curriculum for K-8
classrooms that supports teachers as
they differentiate instruction and
monitoring progress.
It is currently used in 32,000 schools by
172,000 teachers, and 2.7 million
students.

Narration: First, I will discuss Front

Rows cost effectiveness.
As a free add-on resource, Front Row
meets all aspects of cost effectiveness.
The program offers 30000 adaptive math
questions and math facts drills. Within
the Language Arts module, teachers can
assign more than 85 different non-fiction
articles, each at five different reading
levels. Within the teacher dashboard,
teachers are able to keep track of
individual, group, and class progress.

Narration: As for the school edition, it is
important to conduct a careful costbenefit analysis. Both math and language
arts modules can be upgraded to the
school edition separately or together.
At $10.00 per student/year for the math
module, students not only have access to
the adaptive math problems and math
facts practice, but teachers can also
assign specific domanins or standards to
individual students or the entire class. In
addition, the school addition offers
access to the entire bank of inquiry
based lessons.
The language arts module removes the 5
article/month assignment limit to
unlimited access, but at a cost of $12 per
student, having the ability to assign more
than 5 articles per month seems cost
prohibitive. While five reading levels
sound like adequate differentiation
opportunity, when one considers that
these five levels have to span from
Kindergarten to 8th grade, it is
immediately obvious that the
differentiation piece may not be powerful
enough for the language arts module.
The school version of both Mathematics
and Language arts offer a neatl
dashboard for administrators, which
allows them to monitor student progress
school wide.

Narration: In case studies performed by

Front Row, results were convincing. This
graph demonstrates the results of a case
study in which the class showed almost
twice the gains as both the district
average, and the average of the class
down the hall after just 4 months of using
Front Row.
This graph documents the results of
another case study. After using FrontRow,
Mr. S classroom showed 55% more
growth on a standards based test than
the district average, and Mrs. Ts
classroom grew 360% more than the
district average.
While these studies were not
independently performed, they
demonstrate quite impressive data.
Animation: Zoom in on each graph.
Narration: Front Row has a colorful, kidfriendly interface that is very intuitive.

Narration: Each domain begins with a
diagnostic test to ensure proper
placement within the domain.

Narration: The work space provides

students with an all-in-one place to work
and think through the problem. The
problem is stated on the left. Students
have the option of using a pen, numbers,
or applicable manipulatives to work on
their problems. They can opt to have the
problem read out loud, and, if they are
not sure on how to do the problem, they
can watch a brief instructional video.
Students proceed to the next level upon
mastering the current level.

Animation: Label available tools with Camtasia.

Narration: So what are the implications
for teachers? Front Row allows teachers
to provide differentiated instruction in
math, and to some extent reading, and
writing for all students without extra
preparation. It also provides teachers
with an easy and quick tool to assess
student performance.

Animation: Animate piggies to jump up and down and add shout-out bubbles.
Narration: How about the budget? What
implications are there on a schools
budget?
The bulk of advantages within Front Row
are free! So, even if the $10/student
price tag of the School Edition does not
fit a schools current budget, the free
edition still gets them a lot of bang
without a buck!

Narration: In conclusion, Front Row is a

free/affordable solution to differentiating
instruction, especially for mathematics. It
is effective, intuitive, saves teachers time
and schools money. Front Rows
Mathematics School Edition has
significant advantages and may have the
potential to substitute for other paid
materials or services.
While Front Rows Language Arts School
Edition does not offer enough to justify its
cost, the Free Edition offers teachers a
free non-fiction resource that is certainly
worth trying out.
