Users Manual

HellermannTytons TagPrint Pro labeling software is powerful, yet very easy to use.
Setting the Standard for Design - TagPrint Pro allows the user to place graphics, text, bar codes, and lines
anywhere on the label. Advanced users will like the built-in editing tools that can be used to ensure the label
looks exactly the way they want.
Easy to Use - Beginners can use the built-in label design wizard to step through the entire label design
process. Go from installation to printing in practically no time at all.
Built-in Table Database - A built-in table allows the user to incorporate variable sets of data, graphics, or bar
codes into the label. The powerful sequencing feature can also be used to skip the tedious data-entry process
that many other programs require. If the numbers are sequenced, time and money are sure to be saved.
A Cinch to Print - TagPrint Pro can print to nearly any dot-matrix, laser, ink jet, or thermal transfer printer with
a valid 32-bit Windows or Windows NT printer driver. Setting up the preferences for a label takes only minutes, plus all of HellermannTytons label products have been pre-defined for instant use.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Chapter 2: Label Design

The label design controls how your information will be printed on the label. In a label design, there can be both
simple graphics objects, like lines and rectangles as well as text fields and images. Text fields and images can be linked
to a table if labels with different text and images are to be printed. Constant text, date and time can also be printed.
The table itself is described in another chapter. Most of the commands for the label design can only be performed
when the label design window is active. The label design will be saved containing the objects you placed on it, the
label dimensions, and the label view preferences.

New Label Design

The New... option in the File Menu allows you to create a new label design. Once the option is selected, the
following dialog box will appear on your screen:

You can open a new label design by clicking on the appropriate button and clicking OK.
Click on Label Design to create a new label template (Recommended)
Click on Data Table if you only wish to create a database table
Click on Label database if you wish to select another label database (Not recommended)
NOTE: The label database can be used to select other databases including those that are region specific (label database for European A4 size materials)

2-1

Chapter 2: Label Design

Label Design Guide

The label design guide dialog box is opened automatically when a new label design is created. The label design guide
can be used to create a simple label layout with images and/or text. The label guide steps you through the process of
creating your new design.

Label Design Guide - Step 1

Step one in the label design guide allows you to select your label type. If the label that you want to use appears in
the window, you can just click Next. If you want a different label, click Select Label.
Click the down arrow next to Show and select the printer type you will be using.

Next, choose your label part number (Within the printer category selected) click once on the label to be selected and
then click on OK.

You will be returned to the label design guide Step 1 and then click Next.

2-2

Chapter 2: Label Design

Label Design Guide - Step 2

The second step in the label design guide, allows you to easily place objects on your label design. Click on a button to
add a field to the label design. Use this feature to quickly and easily design a basic label.
You will be able to customize the label design further, once the label design guide has taken you though all 4 steps.
If you wish to place all your own objects, (barcodes, for instance) you may click Cancel at any time to start with a
blank design.

Text Options:
Fixed Text - Text field that does not change from label to label.
Variable Text - Text field that changes depending on the label. Used for serial numbers or for labels that have
random or different information on each label printed.
Date - Places the current date on your label. This date is pulled from the desktop of Microsoft Windows and is
not internal to TagPrint Pro.
Counter - Use this option to place a numeric counter on your label design. The counter will automatically
continue the next time you open the label design, remembering exactly where you left off.

Graphic Options:
Fixed Images - Images that do not change from label to label.
Variable Images - Images that are different for each label printed.

2-3

Chapter 2: Label Design

Example Below: If you were to click twice on the Fixed Text icon, you would get a two line label that will eventually have two
lines of data that never change from label to label.

Example Below: You can mix and match, by clicking once on the Fixed Text icon and then clicking once on the
Variable Text icon. This would create a label that has line one as a line that is the same on every label. Line two
would be a serial number or random data that is different for each label.

2-4

Chapter 2: Label Design

If you have added any graphics to your label design, you can choose from 2 layout types. Layout 1 will align your
graphics above or below your text fields. Layout 2 will align your graphics to the left of your text boxes.

Layout 1

Layout 2

When you are satisfied with the design of your label layout, click on Next to continue.
You are then asked if you wish to create a new data table (Recommended).

Label Design Guide - Step 3

Click Finish to complete the design process.

2-5

Chapter 2: Label Design

Opening an Existing Label Design

Open a previously saved label design by clicking the Open icon or through the File menu. TagPrint Pro 2.0 files have
the extension .xml (for label design). You may choose the type of file by using the Files of type: pull down menu.

Once you find the label design you wish to open, first click on the file, then click Open. You may also double-click on
the file to open it directly.

Opening TagPrint Pro 1.0 Files in TagPrint Pro 2.0

The label database format for a particular label is always saved with that label. Using an old file in the new program
will require the step of selecting the same label from the appropriate printer category and the re-saving.
When opening old .dsn files used in TagPrint Pro 1.0, they will keep the same settings for Printer Family. When opening a .dsn file, re-select the label you are using and choose the correct Printer Family. This will then use your existing
label design with the current label definitions.

Opening a Label Database

TagPrint Pro has a default label database that contains all the label sizes currently supplied by HellermannTyton. You
have an option to create customized label databases using the techniques described in Chapter 5 Creating a New
Label Definition. HellermannTyton also supplies label databases that contain label sizes unique to the European
Union and other global regions. To select one of the other label databases, click on File and New. The following
screen will appear.

2-6

Chapter 2: Label Design

Click on Label Database and then you will be prompted to select the directory in which the database is stored.

Open the database needed and continue to use the program as normal. This will remain the default database until a
new database is selected.
To look at what database is currently in use, selection the Options pull down menu from the main menu of TagPrint
Pro.

Lock-Out Unauthorized Users

The label designer is able to lock-out any users so that they cannot change the contents of the label design and/or
table. Only the authorized designer can make changes.
After opening a new label design and table, click-on Lock in the File pull-down menu. Fill in and confirm a password
to lock the design and table. To link the label design and table together, save under same file name (however, the file
type will be different). When the designer wants to make changes to the label design and table, go back to the File
menu and click Unlock.

2-7

Chapter 2: Label Design

Adding Items to the Label Design

A label design is made up of Object Boxes and lines. The Object Boxes contain all the graphic, barcode, and text
information contained in the label design. So, to add graphics, barcodes, or text to your label design, you must first
draw an Object Box.
The Object menu contains all the items that can be used in the label design. The objects are also available on the left
tool bar.

Draw an Object
To draw an object, first select the type of object you want from the tool bar or the menu. Now move the cursor to
the label design. The cursor will have changed from an arrow to a cross. In the lower left of the cursor you will also
see an icon that matches the tool you chose.
Move the cursor to where you would like to place the first corner of your object. Click-and-hold the left mouse
button on that corner. Drag the mouse until you achieve the desired shape for your object. While dragging, the
object borders will be displayed by dashed lines. Release the mouse button to place the object. To move or change
an item in the label design, see the section later in this chapter titled Changing Items in the Label Design.

Select Tool
The Select tool is used to move and change items in the label design. You may also choose the Select tool if you
want to drop another tool that you have chosen.

Line Tool
A line can be drawn anywhere on the label design. You can adjust the width and color of the line from the tool bar.
Note: To force the cursor to stay within 45 degree increments, hold down the shift key on your keyboard while you
draw the line.

Adjusting Line Width

You can adjust the line width quickly using the Line Width window in the tool bar.

Simply click on the down arrow tab and a menu will appear allowing you to choose the line width.

Adjusting Line Color

You may adjust the line color using the Line Color component of the tool bar.

Simply click on the down arrow tab located next to the icon that looks like a pencil. A palette of colors will appear
from which you may choose a line color. The None option has been disabled for the line color. Only the basic 16
system colors are listed.

2-8

Chapter 2: Label Design

Rectangle Tool
Just like the line tool, the rectangle may be any width and any color. A rectangle may also be filled with any color.
The sides of the rectangle are always parallel to the rulers.
Note: To force the Rectangle tool to draw a square where all sides are equal, hold down the shift key on your
keyboard while you draw the rectangle.

Rectangle Line Color

You may adjust the color of the border surrounding the rectangle. To adjust the border color, refer to the Adjusting
Line Color part of the Line Tool section.

Rectangle Fill Color

You may adjust the fill color of the inside of the rectangle. To change the fill color use the Fill Color tool in the tool
bar.

Simply click on the down arrow tab located next to the icon that looks like a paint bucket. A palette of colors will
appear from which you may choose a fill color. To leave your rectangle transparent, where only the border will print
over the top of other items, choose the None option in the color palette. Only the basic 16 system colors are listed.

Rectangle Line Width

You may adjust the line width of the border surrounding the rectangle. To adjust the line width, refer to the
Adjusting Line Width part of the Line Tool section.

Rectangle Properties
You may change the corner radius of the rectangle and rounded rectangle tools. To adjust the corner radius, select
the rectangle item you wish to adjust, and choose the Properties option in the Object menu. The following dialog
box will appear:

To adjust the corner radius, simply enter the desired value in the entry blank or use the pull down menu to choose a
set size. Use 0 if you do not wish to have rounded corners.

2-9

Chapter 2: Label Design

Rounded Rectangle Tool

The Rounded Rectangle Tool is the same as the Rectangle tool except that it has rounded corners. You can adjust
the radius of the corners to your liking. Follow the instructions on changing rounded corners found in the Rectangle
Tool section above.

This tool will always draw an isosceles triangle. The two sides of the triangle will always be equal in length. The
baseline will be parallel to the ruler.
Note: If you hold down the Shift key on the keyboard while drawing the triangle, a triangle with 3 equal length sides
will be drawn.

Regular Triangle
This will draw a standard triangle with a black outline and pointed corners.

Warning Triangle
This will draw a warning-style triangle with a black outline and rounded corners.
Note: You may adjust the setting for rounded corners in the Triangle Properties dialog box.

Ellipse Tool
The ellipse tool is used to create elliptical and circular objects.
Note: To create circles, hold down the Shift key while drawing the ellipse.

Text Tool
The text tool is used to create boxes that contain text. Every set of text that is formatted a certain way must be kept
as its own text box. Every text box may be formatted using the Properties box. To open the Properties box, go to
the Object menu and choose Properties....

Vertical Align - Allows you to place the text at the Top, Middle, or Bottom of the Text box.
Auto Size - When checked, will force the information to fit inside of the drawn box.
Line Spacing - Allows you to change the space between lines. Negative points bring the lines closer together, while
the positive points spread the lines further apart.
Horz/Vert Scaling - This will stretch the actual size of the characters vertically or horizontally. You can force the
characters to take up the whole width or height of a text box.
% Scale - Use along with the Horz/Vert Scaling. This allows you to manually change the charcters horizontally or
vertically. (100% = no scaling).

2-10

Chapter 2: Label Design

Tracking Text - This increases or decreases the space between the characters.
Allow Word Wrap - You can turn the word wrap on and off. This will force the text onto one line when you are
done editing the text box. The Auto Size overrides Allow Word Wrap. In order to have the Allow Word
Wrap deselected, you should also deselect Auto Size.

Fixed Text
The Fixed Text tool will add text on your label design that stays the same on every label. Once a fixed text box is
drawn, it will show a blinking cursor where you may enter any text you like. Click outside of the active text box to
confirm any changes.

Variable Text
The Variable Text tool will read information from the table to create labels that change from one to the next. When
printed, information from the table will print where you place this variable text box. You may format the variable text
box to control the appearance of text from the table.
The variable text properties box helps you control the information that will be printed.

You can specify which column or combination of columns that will print in the variable text box. This is a very
powerful feature that will save you lots of time when working with complex part numbers or serial numbers.
When you choose a combination of columns to print in the same text box, you must also choose a delimiter. The
delimiter will print between the characters that you have entered in the table.
If you check Ignore blank fields, the software will not use table fields that have nothing entered.

Date
The Date Text tool will insert the current date on your label design. This is very useful feature for any application
which needs the date of manufacture printed on the label. You will not need to update a fixed field every day.
The date Properties box will allow you to control how the date is displayed on your label design.

2-11

Chapter 2: Label Design

Using the Format option, you can choose how to format your date on the label design. The Short and Long format
options will use the preferences that you have set in the Windows Regional Control Panel. The Other format will
allow you to just display the Day, Month, or Year number. You may offset the current date using the Offset feature.
This is useful when printing labels ahead of time. You may use negative values.

Increment Number
With this text tool, TagPrint Pro will automatically increment numbers for you. Simply input the starting number and
TagPrint Pro will remember where you left off.

You can pad your increment number by checking the Fill with leading zeros option. When checked, you can specify
the minimum number of digits for your number.

Change Text Type

Right click on the mouse and click onto Change Text Type. Here you are able to change the text box type from
Constant to Date or Date to Counter, etc.

2-12

Chapter 2: Label Design

Image Tool
The image tool is used to create boxes that contain graphics. Images may be either constant or from a table.
Constant images remain the same on every label, while images in the table have the option of changing from label to
label.

New Label Wizard Creation

Create a new label design per the instructions on using the label design guide. When you get to step 2, you can
select a constant image or a variable image. In this example, a constant image and a constant text field were created
on one label with layout 2 selected.

Graphic Images Manual Creation

Graphic Images can also be created manually.
Once you have an unnamed label design, you are now ready to add a graphic image to your label.
Once the blank unnamed label design is created, there are a series of icons vertically listed on the far left side of the
screen.

The Graphic icon that appears second to last (near the bottom) of this vertical row appears like a small
mountain. Click once on this icon and you will see two familiar symbols.

Constant Image: One represents a constant image, in which the image will stay the same on every
label.

Variable Image: The other represents a variable image that changes from label to label.
In the case of this example, click on the Constant icon and click OK. You will now notice that your mouse pointer
now appears as + sign. This is your target pointer for creating an image box. Point this + marker to the position, on
the unnamed label design, in which you wish the upper left hand corner of the image to start. Click and hold the left
mouse button down and then drag the mouse to create a box that is as large as you require for the space allowed for
the image. The same thing can be done when adding a constant or variable text field to your design. For our example, both fields have been added to a label design to show how multiple field types can be added to one label design.
When this action is completed, your unnamed label design will appear as follows:

2-13

Chapter 2: Label Design

Double-click on the empty box that represents your image. TagPrint Pro will automatically open up the default clip art
folder in the Select image folder.

Simply scroll through the list of available images. You can view any image at any time by simply clicking on the image
name once. Double-click on the image you wish to select.
NOTE: The default folder is the the TagPrint Pro Clipart file. TagPrint Pro supports the following image formats:
.bmp (Windows Bitmap)
.jpg (JPEG)
.pcx (PC Paintbrush)
.png (Portable Network Graphics)
.tif (Tagged Image File)
.wmf (Windows Metafile)
The default location to retrieve clip art is listed in the options dialog box. You can open the options dialog box by
clicking on the Options menu of TagPrint Pro.

2-14

Chapter 2: Label Design

You can simply click on Browse... to choose a new folder for your saved work or your clip art files. Again, you can
view any image at any time by simply clicking on the image name once. Double-click on the image you wish to select.
The image now appears in the image box.
The General tab can be used to set specific defaults such as;
Open a Table by Default
Ignore Error Messages
Print Log
Etc.

2-15

Chapter 2: Label Design

Table Image
Use the table image tool just like the fixed image tool. The only difference is that after you draw a table image box,
you will not see any dialog box appear. This will not appear because you are choosing the images in the table. By
drawing the box, you are simply telling the software where you want table-based images in to be drawn.
Note: To specify a column in the table as an image column, see the section on Column types in Chapter 3.

Image Properties
You can point your mouse cursor on the image and then right click the mouse button to bring up the Properties box.

You may select:

Center: Centers the image within the box.

This is the default setting.

Table column:

2-16

Fit: Forces the image to fit the box with as little wasted
space as possible

Selects the image column in the table where you referenced the correct images. This option is only
available when you are using the table image option.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Image Sizing
The image can be sized by simply clicking on the image once to highlight the image and then grabbing any of the
highlighted points around the image. Click and drag the point to reduce or enlarge the image. You can also position
the image anywhere on your label.

Text has now been added to the constant field by double-clicking on the constant field and entering text when the
flashing cursor appears (below).

You can change the image at any time by clicking on the Select Image icon.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Layering of Fields: Bring to Front and Send to Back

TagPrint is versatile in that you can move a text, image, or barcode field to any position on the label, including on top
of another field of the same type or of any type.
Example: if you were to move the Image box over the top of the Text box, it would appear as follows:

Use the Send to back or Bring to front icons to allow access to each box type as needed.

Manipulation of Graphic Images

TagPrint Pro offers the options of manipulating graphic images in these ways: Flipping, Mirror, and Inverse Contrast.

Mirror Image Option

Click on the graphic image on the label design and choose the Mirror Image option from the Object pull down
menu.

The effect the Mirror Image option has on the graphic image is flipping the image horizontally.
For example:

2-18

Chapter 2: Label Design

Flip Image Option

Click on the graphic image on the label design and choose the Flip Image option from the Object pull down menu.

The effect the Flip Image option has on the graphic image is flipping the image vertically.
For example:

Inverse Option
Click on the graphic image on the label design and choose the Inverse option from the Object pull down menu.

The effect the Inverse option has on the graphic image is changing the inversing the contrasts.

Barcode Tool
The barcode tool is used to create boxes that contain barcodes. You may select a constant barcode or one that reads
from the table. Constant barcodes remain the same on every label, while variable barcodes read from the table and
have the option of changing from label to label.

Creating and Printing a Barcode

The addition of a barcode is done manually in TagPrint Pro by first creating an unnamed label design per the
instruction associated with creating a new Template and Table.
Once the blank unnamed label design is created, there are a series of icons vertically listed on the far left side of the
screen.

The Barcode icon that appears last (at the bottom) of this vertical row appears like a small barcode. Click once
on this icon and you will see two familiar symbols.

Constant Barcode icon - One represents a constant barcode, is used when the barcode information will
stay the same on every label.

Variable Barcode - A variable barcode that changes from label to label.

Example: A serialized barcode or a barcode based on random data from a table.

Date Barcode icon - Will insert the current date on your barcode. The date Properties box will allow you
to control how the date is displayed on your label design. One represents a constant barcode.

Increment Barcode - With this barcode tool, TagPrint Pro will automatically increment numbers for you.
Simply input the starting number and TagPrint Pro will remember where you left off. Utilize the
Properties box to integrate changes.

2-20

Chapter 2: Label Design

Insert Constant Barcode

In this example, click once on the constant system and you will see a sub-menu that contains a complete list of barcode options.

In the case of this example, click on CODE128 and click OK. You will now notice that your mouse pointer now appears
as + sign. This is your target pointer for creating a barcode box. Point this + marker to the position, on the unnamed
label design, in which you wish the upper left hand corner of the barcode to start. Click and hold the left mouse button
down and then drag the mouse to create a box that is as large as you require for the space allowed for the barcode.
When this action is completed, your unnamed label design will show a screen that reads as: Enter barcode text. It is
here that you enter in the data you wish to print as a barcode. In this case, we will enter the text 12345 and click OK.
The screen now appears as follows:

Insert Variable Barcode

Use this tool to place a variable barcode on your label design. Variable barcodes are added in a similar fashion to
how constant barcodes are added. Once you choose the variable barcode tool, a dialog box will appear asking
you to select the type of barcode you wish to use. Refer to a section later in this chapter to learn more about
the different barcode types.

2-21

Chapter 2: Label Design

Once you have chosen the barcode symbology, simply draw a box on the label where you want the barcode to appear.
Make sure the box is large enough to hold the barcode you need to use. When the box is the size you desire, release
the mouse button. The following will appear:
A sample barcode will be displayed with an A in brackets. The {A} signifies that your variable barcode is reading
from column A in your table. You will not see the actual data from your table on the label design at this time. To
insert variable data into the barcode, you will need to open a table. Refer to Chapter 4 on tables.

Changing Text Size

The human readable font size can be altered just like normal text. Click on font size and change the size of the font.

2-22

Chapter 2: Label Design

Scissors Show Up on My Barcode Box

If you have drawn a barcode on your label design and a scissors show up, you need to make some adjustments. The
first step would be to enlarge the barcode's box to accommodate the barcode. Second, try changing the barcode settings to create a shorter or more dense barcode. Third, select a label that can accommodate the number of characters
that you wish to use. Fourth, reduce the number of characters you use in the barcode.
Note: Be especially careful with variable barcodes that read from the table. Make sure the longest entry displays on
the label design without scissors. The scissors system will appear indicating that most of the barcode is not visible on
the label. This would not be a readable barcode if printed. A barcode in this situation may look as follows:

Click once on the barcode to highlight it, then right click your mouse button to bring up the barcode pull down menu.

Select Properties... from this menu.

The following menu will appear. This controls the properties for your barcode.

2-23

Chapter 2: Label Design

Symbology - You can change the Barcode Type from this screen.
Narrow Bar Width - Controls the ratio between the wide and narrow bars. Changing this can increase or decrease
the default width of your barcode.
Height - Controls the height of the barcode
Space Correction - This corrects for various printing methods. For thermal transfer printing, no correction is needed.
Leave the correction at 0. For ink jet, the correction might be set to -1. This will print the bars a little more narrowly
with the assumption that the ink will bleed and spread out just a little bit before completely drying on the paper or
printed substrate. A laser printer might require a +1 since the toner used to print in this method is not very accurate
as compared to thermal transfer printing. If unsure, always leave at zero (0).
Do Not Print - Selecting this option will allow you to see the barcode on the label design, but it will not print when
you print the label to the printer.
Print HR (Human Readable) - Toggle on/off the human readable characters below the barcode.
HR Above Bar Code - Places Human Readable Text above the barcode
HR Offset - Increases the distance between the barcode and the human readable text.
Conform to Standard - If you need to create a Narrow Bar Width by manually entering a number that is not in the
pull down listing, you need to un-select this option.
Add Quiet Zone - Recommended. This adds some white space before and after the barcode. This enhances the
readability of the barcode when scanned. Your finished barcode should always have a visual quiet zone when you
look at your unnamed label design.
In the example of this very small label. The following parameters were entered in order to fit the barcode on the label.
Narrow Bar Width - .007
Height - .25
Conform to Standard - Not selected
Notice how the preview changes to show the effect you are having on the barcode by changing these parameters.

2-24

Chapter 2: Label Design

The finished barcode will appear as follows with no scissors in the upper left hand corner. This will print as a readable
barcode.

Barcode Types
TagPrint Pro includes the most popular barcode types for industrial applications. Each barcode has its own particular
strengths and weaknesses. While TagPrint Pro does include the instructions on how to create and print a barcode, you
are responsible for the specific requirements of each barcode. Please be sure to test your printed barcodes to ensure
compatibility with your particular application.
Code 39 - Variable length symbology encoding 44 characters: 0-9;A-Z;-.*$/+%
Code 39 Full - A modification to Code 39 allowing a variable length symbology encoding the complete 128 ASCII
character set.
Code 128 - A variable length, high density, alphanumeric symbology capable of encoding all 128 ASCII characters.
EAN/UCC128 - A variation on Code 128 primarily for product identification. Interleaved 2 of 5: a variable length,
high density that encodes digit pairs. It is a numeric only barcode. If an odd number of digits are provided, TagPrint
Pro will left padded with zeros to fit the proper length.
UPC-A - A 12 digit numeric symbology used in retail applications. 11 data digits and 1 check digit.
EAN-13 - Similar to UPC-A except it encodes a 13 digit number. Note: in both EAN-13 and UPC-A, if the 12 (13)
digit is supplied; the digit is replaced by TagPrint Pro Pro to ensure a correct check digit. This can not be overridden.
PDF417 - A high density 2 dimensional symbology the can encode the entire 255 character ASCII character set.
DataMatrix ECC200 -Is a high density 2 dimensional barcode symbology capable of encoding 3116 characters from
the entire 255 character ASCII character set. ECC200 is the latest and most advanced version of DataMatrix with
Reed-Solomon error correction.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Changing Items in the Label Design

The Edit menu contains the usual commands for cut and paste and some other facilities. Most edit commands are
also available on the main tool bar. The right mouse button will bring up a shortcut menu with some edit commands.
To use the edit commands, like cut and copy, the label design must have a selection.

Select an Item
You may select an item by clicking on it once with the cursor. You may select more than one item two ways. You can
draw a frame that completely surrounds the items you wish to choose.

All items inside the frame become selected when you release the mouse button.

You may also select individual boxes by clicking on them while holding down the Shift key on your keyboard. You
may also use the Shift key to deselect individual items when clicking on them.

Move an item
Items that have been selected can be moved in two ways. You can click-and-hold the mouse button to pick up the
item. While continuing to hold down the mouse button, move the cursor to where you would like to put the object
down. An outline of the objects will appear. Release the mouse button and the software will place the item where
you moved it.
You may also move a selected item one pixel at a time by using the arrow keys on your keyboard. The object must
first be selected. If you hold down Shift the arrow keys will move the object 10 pixels at a time. Moving with keyboard arrows will terminate when Enter is pressed. This method is a bit slower, but can aid in placing an item exactly
where you want it.

Re-Size a Box
You can re-size a selected box by clicking on one of the 8 boxes or handles on the border of the box. Click-anddrag on one of the boxes and move the cursor to re-size the box. Release the mouse button to place the item. To
change the shape of the box in one direction only, choose a non-corner handle. Using the corner handle will change
both height and width proportionately to one another.

Default Font Style and Point Size

You can set the default font and point size by first creating a template, but do not select anything within the template.
If you use the design wizard, you can click on the Cancel button, once you have selected your label size. The screen
will look as follows:

2-26

Chapter 2: Label Design

Simply choose your font style and point size here. This will save it to the tagprint.ini file. Once you change it, the
default text size will always start at what you set here. The same will apply for the human readable text in barcodes.

Undo
Undo is a feature that restores the last change you made (like a move or a deletion of an object). Undo has only one
level, so you can restore only the very last change you made.
Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl + Z.

Cut
You can cut all the selected items off the page by using this command. Cut will store the item(s) you selected to
the clipboard until you use the paste command to place the item(s) back on the label design. Be careful not to cut
twice before pasting, or the first item(s) will be lost. You may also use Cut to delete unwanted items off your label
design. Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl + X.

Copy
Copy functions much like the cut command except it does not remove the item from the label design. Instead, it
leaves an exact copy in the clipboard. You can use the paste command to add the copy to the label design.
Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl + C.

Paste
The paste function takes whatever is on the clipboard at the moment and places it on your label design. You may use
the paste command as many times as you want as long as another item is not cut or copied to the clipboard.
Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl + V.

Delete
The delete command will remove any selected items from the label design. The delete command will NOT place the
object to the clipboard. If you accidentally delete an item, you may use the undo command to restore the item.
Keyboard Shortcut: Delete.

Select All
The select all command will activate all the objects on your label design. You must choose this option from the Edit
menu.

Duplicate
This command creates a duplicate of the selected objects. The new objects are located immediately below or to the
right of the originals, depending on which icon you select. When the duplicate command is activated, the new
objects will be selected, therefore you can execute this command several times in a row. Duplicating a table text
object will duplicate the next column from the table.

2-27

Chapter 2: Label Design

Send to Back
The Send to back tool is useful when multiple objects overlap on the label design. When placing objects, the object
created most recently will be on the top of the other objects. The oldest object will be on the bottom. This is because
TagPrint Pro uses an advanced layout design with layers. This feature makes TagPrint Pro a very powerful layout tool
capable of nearly any label design you can imagine.

To move an object to the back of all the other objects, you must first select it. After the object is selected, choose the
Send to back option from the Object menu and the selected object will be moved to the layer on the bottom.
The first illustration above shows the recycle symbol in front of the circle and square. The recycle symbol is in the top
layer. The second illustration shows the recycle symbol behind the circle and square. The recycle symbol is now in the
bottom layer.

Bring to Front
The Bring to front tool is just like the Send to back tool except for that it works in the opposite direction. The
Bring to front tool will literally bring any selected object to the front layer on your label design.

To move an object from the back layer to the front layer, you must first select it. After the object is selected, choose
the Bring to front option from the Object menu and the selected object will be moved to the top layer. If you find
selecting the desired object difficult or impossible, try the process in reverse. Send multiple objects from the top layer
to the back using the Send to back tool. This will eventually move the desired object to the front.
The first illustration shows a UL symbol behind the circle. The UL symbol is now in the bottom layer. The second
illustration above shows the UL symbol in front of the circle. The UL symbol is in the top layer.

2-28

Chapter 2: Label Design

Group Objects
The Group option in the Objects menu is yet another useful tool for designing your label design. This is useful for
objects on your label design that need to be placed a certain way in relation to one another. Any type of drawn
objects can be grouped. You can mix and match barcodes, text, graphics, and drawn items.

Above is one example of an application where you may want to group objects. In the above case, the human
readable text for a barcode is added above the barcode. To group the objects, highlight all the items you want to stay
together. Next, choose Group from the Objects menu. The objects will now act like one item as illustrated on the
right.

Ungroup Objects
You can ungroup objects in much the same way as you grouped them. First, highlight the single item that contains
the grouped objects. Next, choose Ungroup from the Objects menu. The objects will ungroup and act as individual
items once again.

Rotate Left
TagPrint Pro allows you to rotate nearly any item on your label design. All barcodes, text, objects, and graphics
(excluding the .wmf format) can be rotated on the screen and printed the same way.

To rotate an object, it must first be selected. After it is selected, either click the icon shown above, or choose Rotate
Right or Rotate Left from the Object menu. The object will be rotated 90 degrees at a time.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Distribute Tool
The Distribute tool allows you to evenly place items on the label design when you have multiple objects selected. To
choose the distribute tool, simply click on the tool and the options will be listed in a pull down menu.
Note: Three (3) or more items must be selected in order to use the distribute tool.
Distribute Horizontal - This tool helps you place items on your label design evenly. This tool will keep
the left-most and right-most items exactly where they are. It will then move the item(s) between the side
items, and evenly space the item(s) in the middle. This tool only affects objects on the left to right plane.

Chapter 2: Label Design

View Options for the Label Design

TagPrint Pro offers a number of options in viewing your label design. These tools can be helpful in creating a professional looking design. These options are listed in TagPrint Pros View menu.

Guide Lines

Guide lines help align objects on a label design. You can activate or deactivate guide lines on your label design by
checking or un-checking the Show guide lines option in the View menu.

Creating Guide Lines

To create a new guide line, place the cursor on a ruler in the label design window, and hold down the left mouse
button while dragging the cursor out onto the label area. To place the guide line, release the mouse button.

You can use any number of horizontal and vertical guide lines on your label design.

Changing Guide Lines

You can change a guide line by placing your cursor over an existing guide line.
When your cursor is placed over the existing guide line, it will change into a cursor with left/right arrows or up/down
arrows, depending on the orientation of the guide line. Click and hold down your left mouse button to move it elsewhere on the label design. To place the guide line, release the mouse button.

Removing Guide Lines

You can remove a guide line entirely by moving it back to the ruler from which it originated.

Snap to Guide Lines

You can choose the Snap to guide lines option to force nearby object boxes to align with the guide line.

This tool can be very useful for lining up multiple objects that are not near each other on the label design.

2-32

Chapter 2: Label Design

Show Grid

TagPrint Pro allows you to show a grid on the label design that will not print with other objects. You may turn the
grid on/off by checking/un-checking the Show grid option in the View menu. The grid is useful in designing larger
labels where placement and proportion are important.

The first illustration shows the grid off. The second illustration shows the grid on.

Field Codes

Field codes allow you to easily see where information is coming from the table. You can toggle the Field codes
on/off by checking/un-checking the Field codes option in the View menu.

The first illustration shows the field codes on. In that example, you can easily see which columns of the data table will
print on the label design. The second illustration shows the field codes off. That example shows the actual information off the table. When the field codes option is off, the label design will show the data from the table row that is
currently selected. If there is no data in the current row, no data will show on the label design.

Autoscale Indicator
TagPrint has an autoscale indicator that appears as a RED slash mark in the upper right hand corner of the text box.
When this appears, the software is forcing the current font size to fit within the defined text box on the label. If a 40
point font is selected, which would not fit on a small text box, the software is forcing all the characters to be printed,
to show up in the text box in a printable form. This will not affect printing as long you simply want and expect to
print all characters in that box regardless of a particular font size.

2-33

Chapter 2: Label Design

To remove this feature - Click on the text box to be edited and right click the mouse to bring up the Options
pull down menu.

Simply un-select Auto size and the red slash will go away. You can now force a specific font size to be used.
Selecting Do Not Print will allow that particular text box to be visible on the label in the TagPrint Pro software, but
this same box will not print to a label when the label is printed.

Field Contours

Field contours do not print, but they show the outline of an object while you are designing your label design. They
are very useful for lining up, re-sizing, moving, and manipulating objects. It is recommended that you only turn off
the Field contours option when you want to view the label design just as it would print.

The first illustration shows the label design with the field contours turned on. You can easily see the borders to each
individual item on the label design. The second illustration shows the label design with the field contours turned off.
This view allows you to see exactly what the label will look like when it is printed.

2-34

Chapter 2: Label Design

Label Design Pop-up Menu

When you are working in the label design, you may want to access the shortcut pop-up menu to save time. Many of
the most popular TagPrint Pro tools are listed in this pop-up menu.

To access the shortcut pop-up menu, you must click the right mouse button somewhere on the label design itself. The
menu will appear on the screen. Simply click on one of the active items in the menu to use the shortcut. If you do
not wish to make a selection, click with the left mouse button somewhere else on the label design.

Zoom Feature
The Zoom feature allows you to zoom the label up to 2000%. Additionally, you can manually set the zoom to
10,000%.

Saving a Label Design

To save a label design you must first make sure the window is currently active. To make sure simply click somewhere
on the label or on the grey area surrounding the label. To save the file, either click on the save tool icon or choose
Save in the File menu. If the label design has not yet been saved, the Save as... dialog box will appear.
The default location to save your work is listed in the Options dialog box. You can open the options dialog box by
clicking on the Options menu of TagPrint Pro.

The default work folder is located in the same place as the tagprint.exe application. If you wish to change the default
save location, simply click Browse... and choose a new folder.

Chapter 2: Label Design

Saving TagPrint Pro 1.0 Files in TagPrint Pro 2.0

After opening your existing .dsn file(s) from TagPrint Pro 1.0 and re-selecting the Printer Family and label type, you can
make changes to label and print. When saving the label, the file will have an extension of .xml. It will not save with a
.dsn extension. Opening files with a .dsn extension is possible, but they can only be saved with a .xml extension.

Save As...
The Save As... function is a useful tool in saving modified files and saving files to a new location. Any time you do
not wish to save over an existing file, you should use the Save As... function. You can find Save As... in the File
menu.

You can save as an .xml file or a .jpg file.

Simply type a name for your label design and click Save. If you wish, you can change the destination of the file by
changing the Save in: location.
If you select the name of an existing file, it has to be confirmed before the label design is saved in order to prevent
accidental overwriting of files. If you want to overwrite the existing file click Yes. Otherwise, click No.

Chapter 3: Table

Chapter 3: Table
The Basics
The table is used to print labels with different text on each label. The table is a kind of table/database with rows and
columns just like popular spreadsheet programs. Text, barcodes, and graphics on the label design can be linked to a
table column where each row is a separate label.
Text can be entered in the table from the keyboard, or pasted from other Windows applications using the clipboard
(cut and paste). Advanced numerical sequences can be created using the powerful sequence tool. There is an option
for importing data from ASCII text files.

Table Window
A table window contains a table with row buttons, column headings, and cells. The title of the window will show the
name of the table or the text Unnamed table if the table is new and has not yet been saved.

The rows of the table are enumerated starting with (1). The maximum number of rows is dependent on the available
memory. The columns are named A, B, C, etc. The maximum number of columns is 100 and the maximum number
of characters per column is unlimited.
A table can be minimized and shown in the main window.

New Table
To create a new table, go to the File menu and choose New... The following dialog box will appear.

Choose the Data table, option and click OK. A blank new table will appear on your screen. It is possible to have
multiple data tables open at the same time.

3-1

Chapter 3: Table

Open Table
To open a pre-existing table, go to the File menu and choose Open... The following dialog box will appear.

To open a table, you need to go to the option called Files of Type: and choose
Label design {*.xml}
Label design {*.dsn} - Also opens V1.0 TagPrint Pro designs
Data tables {*.tab} - Also opens V1.0 TagPrint Pro tables
Text files {*.txt}
Comma Delimited Text {*.dsv}
Excel Files {*.xls}
Database Files {*.dbf}
TagPrint Pro V5.0 and V6.0 tables {*.tbl}

Assuming you have saved your data tables in the default directory, all your previously created tables will be listed.
Click once on the table you wish to open in order to select it. Click Open to open the table.
You may choose a file from somewhere other than the default folder by changing the Look in: option at the top of
the Open window.

3-2

Chapter 3: Table

Table Cells
A cell is a single box in the table grid. The TagPrint Pro cell is very similar to a cell in any product spreadsheet program. Each cell may contain its own set of data.

Selecting a Cell
You may select a single cell in the table by simply clicking on it once with the left mouse button.

The cell will become highlighted in yellow. When the cell is Yellow, it is "selected".
You may select a number of connected cells in the TagPrint Pro data table. Simply click and hold the mouse button on
the cell in the corner of the group of cells you wish to select. While continuing to hold down the mouse button,
move the mouse until the cell in the opposite corner of the block of data that you wish to select is highlighted. To
confirm this selection, simply release the mouse button.

You are now ready to cut or copy the selection.

3-3

Chapter 3: Table

Entering Text
You will find that entering text in TagPrint Pros table is very similar to entering text in many popular spreadsheet programs. To enter text in a cell (the box that the text goes in), you must first select it by clicking on it once with your
mouse.
Pressing any character on the keyboard will begin editing of the cell. Simply type the information into the cell that
you want. While you are editing a cell, a cursor (blinking line) will appear to show you the insertion point. A cell may
contain an unlimited amount of information.

If you wish to return to any previous character to insert more text, simply use the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard. If you wish to delete characters in the cell to the right of the cursor, press the Delete key on your keyboard. If
you wish to delete characters to the left of the cursor, press the Backspace key located just above Enter on the
keyboard.
To finalize changes to a cell and to exit the edit mode, simply press the Enter key. The cell below the one you were
editing will become highlighted. Alternatively, you may press the Tab key on your keyboard to go to the right of the
cell you were editing. Finally, you may also just click on a different cell to finalize changes and move directly to a cell
that is not connected.

Cut and Paste

Like many popular spreadsheet programs, TagPrint Pro allows many cut and paste features that make data entry and
manipulation much easier. These functions work much like other programs, so you should be able to pick them up
very easily.

Cut
Use the Cut command to remove data from selected cells in your table. The data that you remove will be temporarily
stored in the computers memory (clipboard) for future recall. The selected text can then be pasted to somewhere else
in your TagPrint Pro table or to any other Windows program that accepts data from the clipboard. You may access
this command in a number of ways. You can find the command in the Edit menu of TagPrint Pro, you can click on
the tool pictured above, or you can use the keyboard shortcut.
Keyboard Shortcut: CTRL - X

Copy
The Copy command performs the same function as the Cut command except it does not delete the text off the table
after it is copied to the clipboard. You may access this command in a number of ways. You can find the command in
the Edit menu of TagPrint Pro, you can click on the tool pictured above, or you can use the keyboard shortcut.
Keyboard Shortcut: CTRL - C

3-4

Chapter 3: Table

Paste
The Paste command takes whatever information you have previously cut or copied and places it into the table. The
command will place the information on the table starting at the cell that you have highlighted. This command will
replace any pre-existing text. You may access this command in a number of ways. You can find the command in the
Edit menu of TagPrint Pro, you can click on the tool pictured above, or you can use the keyboard shortcut.
Keyboard Shortcut: CTRL - V

Delete
The Delete command is similar to the Cut command except it does not store the information to a clipboard. The
delete command is permanent and cannot be restored after it is performed. Use great care in deleting items off your
table.

Table Rows
Just like a spreadsheet, TagPrint Pro features rows for entering data. It is easiest to think of every row as one printed
label. Every cell in a row will be associated together when you print your label design. Remember, to print information from a column in the table, you will need to have a separate variable text box on your label design.

Selecting Rows
TagPrint Pro allows you to select entire rows at a time. This feature can be useful for moving rows, deleting rows, or
choosing specific rows to print. To select a row, simply click on the number to the left of the row. The selected row
becomes highlighted to indicate its status.

You may select multiple rows one at a time by clicking on the respective numbers to the left of the row. Alternatively,
you may select a number of rows by holding down the Shift key and clicking on any 2 row numbers. All the rows
between and including the rows you selected will then be highlighted. You may deselect rows by clicking on each row
a second time.

3-5

Chapter 3: Table

Inserting Rows
TagPrint Pro allows you to easily add rows to your table. This feature can be very useful in editing, changing, and
adding to items that you already have in your table.

To start adding rows, highlight the place in the table where you would like the new rows placed. Everything that you
highlight will be shifted down after the rows have been added.

Next, go to the Table menu and choose the Row/Insert option.

After you select the option, blank rows will appear where you had rows highlighted.

Deleting Rows
You can delete rows in the same fashion that you insert them. Simply highlight the rows you wish to delete, go to the
Table menu and choose Row/Delete. All the rows you have selected will be deleted. Be very careful because this
command cannot be undone.

3-6

Chapter 3: Table

Table Columns
Table columns are labeled in TagPrint Pro with capital letters. This is very similar to popular spreadsheet programs. In
TagPrint Pro, each column represents a separate piece of information for each label. If you wanted to place 3 different
variable items on your label design, you would need 3 corresponding columns.
The Label Design text box that features an {A} will therefore take its data from column A in the table. A text box that
features a {B} will take its data from column B and so forth.
You can edit table columns in much the same way that you can with the rows. Additionally, you can configure
columns to specify the number of times to print a label and for importing variable graphics.
Warning!! DO NOT attempt to copy and paste an entire column. Instead, select only the text you wish to have
moved.

Selecting Columns
You can select columns in the same fashion that you select rows. Simply click with your mouse on the letter above
each column. The selected row becomes highlighted to indicate its status.

You may select multiple columns one at a time by clicking on the respective letters to the top of the row.
Alternatively, you may select a number of columns by holding down the Shift key and clicking on any 2 column
letters. All the columns between and including the columns you selected will then be highlighted. You may deselect
columns by clicking on each column a second time.

3-7

Chapter 3: Table

Inserting Columns
You may insert columns in much the same way that rows are added. All the data in the table will shift to the right
after you insert the column(s). The added column(s) can be defined for text, copies, or images. (Refer to the section
on Column Types later in this chapter to learn about what each type of column is used for.)
To start, simply select the spaces where you wish to insert blank columns.
Next, go to the Table menu and choose Column/Insert/Text (or whatever type of column you desire)

A new blank column will appear in your table.

Column Width
You can adjust the table column widths by placing your cursor between column header A and column header B. As
seen in the screen capture below, your cursor will change to a right/left move cursor.

To adjust the width, simply click and hold down your mouse button and move your mouse to the right or left. In this
example, if you want to make the A column larger, move to the right. If you want to make the A column
smaller, move to the left. Release the mouse button when the column looks like you want it to.
To adjust the size of the B column, you must put the cursor on the line between the B and the C headers.
Repeat the process as described above for the rest of your columns.

3-8

Chapter 3: Table

Column Types
TagPrint Pro allows you to define a column as Text, Copies, or Images. There is a specific use for each type of column. Please refer to the following explanations of the column types:

Text Column
Every column in the table is a text column by default. This is the type of column you will use most often. A text
column is used by the Label Design to read variable text for your label design.

Copies Column
The copies column is used to set the number of times a particular variable label will print. For example, you want the
information that is located in row 1 of the table to print 5 times. You would then enter 5 in row 1 of the copies
column. Likewise, you can enter a value in every row of the copies column that corresponds with how many times
you want the information in that row to print. The copies column is designated by the # mark on the top of the
column and by its aqua-blue highlight color.

The table above would have the resulting print out:

3-9

Chapter 3: Table

Image Column
The image column is used to define variable images for your label design. TagPrint Pro designates the Image column
by highlighting the entire column grey and by naming the column header Image1.

You may define as many variable image columns as you like. They will be numbered Image2, Image3 and so on.

Selecting an Image for the Table

To enter the image location in a cell of the Image column, you must go to the Table menu and choose Select
image.... The TagPrint Pro image browse dialog box will then appear allowing you to choose the image off your hard
drive.

Changing the Column Type

You may change the column type through the Table menu in TagPrint Pro. First, select the column you wish to
change. Second, go to the Table menu and choose Column/Change Type. You will have the option to change the
column to Text, Copies, or Image. If you already have a copies column, that option will not be available.

Repeat Text
To repeat text within each cell on the table. Select the Table menu and Repeat Text.

3-10

Chapter 3: Table

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity)

TagPrint Pro can import table data from any ODBC (Open Database Connectivty) compliant database. The feature was
implemented as an import function to an open table grid. ODBC represents a standard method to access a variety of
databases. It is not necessarily a user interface to these databases. To aid in facilitating the ability for normal users to
easily access data tables, TagPrint Pro has a unique feature that integrates MSQuery (Microsoft Query) which is available on most PC's.
NOTE: You must have MSQuery installed on your Windows application in order for TagPrint Pro to utilize this feature.
Consult your Windows manual and CDset for instructions on MSQuery.
Using ODBC, you must start out in a table. Click on the SQL (Structured Query Language) icon at the top of your
screen and you will be prompted with the following sub-menu.

There are 5 icons from left to right, which are as follows:

Create a new database
Open an existing database
Save a database
Create a database using MSQuery
Run ODBC Administrator - This simply connects you directly to the Windows ODBC Source Administrator.
Consult your Windows application for instructions on how to use this Windows application. The user needs to have
knowledge of the SQL language. If not, the MSQuery Wizard is helpful to create most applications.
Example: Click on the Create a database using MSQuery icon
The following menu will appear:

3-11

Chapter 3: Table
Select your database source - Example select Excel Files*
Click OK and the Select Workbook menu will appear.

Select the path and file name of the Excel file to which you wish to connect.
NOTE: If selecting an Excel database, the Excel database must have been created with Data Tables in order to connect
using ODBC. Otherwise you will get an error that says there are No Visible Data Tables. This should not occur with
MS Access or dBASE files. Once you have selected a database, the following Query Wizard - Choose Columns
menu will appear.

In this case, the file has a series of columns. You can highlight a column and click on the > icon to move the column
in the Columns in your query field. You can select as many columns as you wish.

Click Next to continue to the Query Wizard - Filter Data screen.

3-12

Chapter 3: Table

This allow you so filter the data if needed (Again consult your manual for MS QUERY in Windows to establish exactly
how to use the filtering features. Click Next to move to the Sort Order screen.

You can sort the data, depending on your needs. Click Next to confirm if you wish to go back to the TagPrint Pro
Table or view the data in MSQuery.

If you select Return to Application and Finish, the data is imported and you are returned to the table in TagPrint
Pro. The final screen shows all the connecting string information and the SQL statement that refers to the specific file
that you have selected.
Click on Import and the data will come directly into the table.

Importing Text Files into the Datatable

From an open table, click on the TXT icon at the top of the screen. You can click on the specific cell, in the
datatable, that you wish to select the starting position of the imported data. When clicking on the TXT icon, the
following menu will appear.

Select the path and file name of the text file you wish to import. The following Text import guide - step 1 screen
will appear.

TagPrint Pro can import ASCII text that is in a Fixed length format or a Delimited format. Click Next if everything
seems correct in the preview and you will be brought to the Text import guide - step 2 screen.

3-15

Chapter 3: Table

This screen will show you how the text will be formatted in the data table. You can change the delimiter as needed.
When ready click Finish to import the data into the data table.

3-16

Chapter 3: Table

Table Functions
TagPrint Pro offers a number of features designed to make entering and editing data easier.

Adding Fixed and Variable Text to Label - sequences

When you have created a new label design, which includes a data table, you will see a split screen. The unnamed
label design is where you determine what the label will look like when finished. It is here that you control the font
size and type, location of text on the label as well as anything related to the editing of that label. It is a WYSIWYG
(What You See Is What You Get) interface.
To use any of the icons associated with the unnamed label design, you need to click your mouse on that side of the
split screen. Clicking once on the table side will activate a different set of icons.

To add printable text to your {constant} field, double-click on this field and a cursor will appear. Begin to type your
information.

If you wish to add a serial number or random data to your data field {A} you will need to click once on the unnamed
data table side of your split screen.

Manual Entry in the Data Table

First, you can manually enter text in each cell by clicking once on the first cell in which you wish to add data and typing in the information. Pressing the Enter key will bring you to the next cell below.
Important Note: The A column of the table is for line 1 of your unnamed label design. Column B would represent
line 2 and column C would represent line 3 of a three line label that incorporates three variable fields, which would be
represented a {A} {B} {C} on your unnamed label design.

3-17

Chapter 3: Table
The addition of more lines can be done manually or can be done when you are in the Label design guide wizard at
the beginning of the program.
Simply click on the variable text icon three times.

Serial Numbers
If you wish to add a serial number to the unnamed data table, you can click once on the cell of the beginning serial
number and right click your mouse to bring down a pull down menu.
Select Sequence from this menu and you will see the following screen.

Base - This is where you select the serial number type.

TagPrint Pro allows you to choose between Base 10, Base 8, and Base 16 and Alpha-Numeric.
Prefix - Any fixed prefix that does not change from serial number to serial number.
Start - Beginning serial number.
Stop - Last serial number
Increment - Number to increment. If you select 2, the serial number would print as 1, 3, 5, 7, etc.
No of each - Number of each serial number to be printed. (Example, with number of each set to 1, the sequence
will step 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,. With number of each set to 2, the sequence will step 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, .
Sets - Number of sets of serial numbers to be printed.
Suffix - Any suffix that does not change from serial number to serial number
Skip - This will leave empty cells between each serial number. If you select a SKIP of 2, the first serial number would
drop into cell A1 and the next serial number would drop into cell A3, leaving a blank cell between each serial
number.
Insert rows - This option, when checked, will add rows for the text. It will overwrite existing text if it is left
unchecked.

3-18

Chapter 3: Table
Locate next cell - If you check this option, the software will place your cursor at the bottom of your sequence. If you
leave this option unchecked, the software will leave your cursor at the top of the sequence.
Fill with leading zeros - This option will allow you to keep the same number of digits for your entire sequence by
filling the extra space with zeros. (Example: If you are doing a sequence from 1 to 1000, this option will make
the software insert 0001 to 1000. Notice the extra zeros in front of the one!)

Insert your information and then click Start.

The data will then import to the data table. Then click on Close.

To view the Serial Number in the unnamed label design. First click once on the unnamed label design side of your
split screen. Look at the top row of icons at the top portion of the screen.
Click on this icon once to toggle the field codes. Clicking this icon will allow you to either see which field is
represented by the field or what data is represented in that field from the table.

3-19

Chapter 3: Table

Note: by clicking or toggling the Field Codes icon, you can now see the actual data from the data table, but within
the unnamed label design. If you now click on one of the cells in the unnamed label design, you will see the actual
data appear in your design. Selecting Preview will also show you how this concept works. TagPrint Pro knows to
place this data on the actual labels, no matter how many are across and down on the page.

Alphanumeric Sequences
Select Alphanumeric from the pull down list of sequence options. Please note that only when Alphanumeric is
selected, the Fill with leading zeros option is not available. Leading zeros can be inserted directly into the sequence
in this mode.

Once Start is selected, the sequence is automatically dropped into the table.

3-20

Chapter 3: Table

Find
TagPrint Pros Find command can be used to locate text in a particular column of the data table. This can be useful
when you have developed a very large table and you want to find only one particular line to change.
Before you can use the Find command, you must first select the column or a cell in the column you wish to search.
TagPrint Pro will only search one column at a time. Next, choose the Find command from the Table menu.

When you choose the Find option, the following dialog box will appear:

Simply enter the text you wish to find in the Find what entry box. Next, select any options that you wish to use.
Match Whole Word Only - This option will force the the software to exclude matches that are part of another
word. For instance, if you are searching for car, you would choose this option so the software would not find
cargo or oscar.
Match Case - This option would make the search case sensitive. If you type in Car the software will not find
car.
Direction - Choose between Up and Down. This is based on the location of the selected cell in the table.
Once you have entered your information and selected the options you would like, click on the Find Next button to
search your table. If the software finds text different than what you were looking for, click the Find Next button
again.

3-21

Chapter 3: Table

Replace
Replace is similar to the Find command except that it will find a specific word or phrase and replace it with a different
word or phrase. This feature is especially useful if you need to create 2 tables where only a prefix or suffix is different.

Table Pop-up Menu

When you are working in the table, you may want to access the shortcut pop-up menu to save time. Many of the
most popular TagPrint Pro tools are listed in this pop-up menu.

To access the shortcut pop-up menu, you must click the right mouse button somewhere on the table itself. The menu
will appear on the screen. Simply click on one of the active items in the menu to use the shortcut. If you do not wish
to make a selection, click with the left mouse button somewhere else on the table.

Saving a Table
You can save a data table at any point in TagPrint Pro. If you also have a label design open, make sure the table window is highlighted first. You can find the Save commands in the File menu.

3-22

Chapter 3: Table

Save
The Save command is used when you have previously saved a file and you want to save the changes. If your table is
new, TagPrint Pro will automatically use the Save as... command.

Save As...
The Save as... command is to be used if you have a new table that needs to be saved or if you wish to rename a
previous job. Either way, the following dialog box will appear:

This is a standard Windows dialog box. You may choose the folder that you wish to save to directly from the Save in:
pull down window. Enter the name of the file in the File name: entry blank. You may name it anything you like, and
are limited only by Windows naming rules. All TagPrint Pro tables will be saved in the .tab Data Table format.
To prevent you from accidentally over-writing existing files, TagPrint Pro will warn you when your name for a new file
matches something that has already been saved.

3-24

Chapter 4: Printing

Chapter 4: Printing
This chapter provides information on how to print the information from your label design.

Preparing to Print
When preparing to print, please keep these points in mind:

All items on your Label Design must remain within the bounds of the label. If an item remains even a little bit
off the label, the software will give you the following reminder:

To fix this problem, simply place all objects within the confines of the label border.

If you are using information from a table in your Label Design, you must have a table open to print. This allows
the software to print on the label. If you do not have a table open and try to print, you will receive the following reminder:

To fix this problem, simply open a table that has your information in it or create a new table with the appropriate data.

Make sure that your printer is connected to your computer with a cable and that the printer is on. You will also
need a valid Windows driver installed on your computer for your printer. If you do not have this, contact the
manufacturer of the printer you want to use.

If you share your printer with other people over a network, make sure they know you are printing to the printer
with your labels. Many a label has been wasted because it had a memo or letter printed on it by an unknowing
co-worker.

Preview Before Printing

Print preview allows you to see how the label will look when its printed. To switch to preview mode, either click on
the Print Preview Tool, or choose Print Preview... from the File menu.

You will have the option of printing several different ways:

All
Print All will simply print all the rows in your current table.

Selection
Print Selection will allow you to pick and choose which labels from the table you wish to choose. You will need to
highlight at least one row in your table prior to opening the print dialog box in order to use this function. You can
highlight a row in the table by clicking once on the number next to the row. You can un-highlight a row in the same
way you selected it.

Range
Range allows you to print a block of entries from your table. You can print from 1 to 50 or from 100 to 200. The
numbers in the Range command directly correspond to the numbers next to the rows in the table.

Reverse Print Order

Prints from a table in reverse order.

Label Saver
Prints in a daisy chain method if selected. If not selected, prints in even increments across the page. This would leave
label blank in a row of 5 labels.

No of Each:
This option allows you to easily print a certain number of each label. Enter any number greater than 1 in the blank to
activate this feature. The printer will print that number of copies of each row in your table. The copies will be placed
right next to each other as you print. If you have defined a Copies column, the No of each feature will print a multiple of whatever you entered in the Copies column.

Sets:
The Sets option allows you to print multiple copies of your table information. Use any number greater than 1 to activate this feature. Unlike the No of each: option, the Sets option will print all the information in your table once
before starting to subsequent sets of information.

4-6

Chapter 4: Printing

Printing Without Table

If your label design does not include any elements that are connected to a table, the Direct Printing option will be
highlighted.

You can print labels that do not require a table in one of two ways.

Labels
The Labels option allows you to print a certain number of labels, no matter how many pages or partial pages will be
used.

Pages
The Pages option allows you to print a controlled number of full pages. The number of labels on the page depends
on the label definition. The Pages function will work with the Skip option by only skipping the specified number of
labels on the first page and printing full pages thereafter.

Skip
The Skip option will leave a number of labels unprinted before the software starts printing the current batch of
information.

This function is useful in allowing you to re-use a partially printed page. You may also adjust the Skip value in the
Print Preview mode.

Cancel Printing
You may cancel printing any remaining portion of labels that have not already been spooled to your printer. You may
use this option as long as it remains on your screen.
When dialog box disappears, the entire print job has already been spooled to your computer for printing.
If you have turned off the spooling option for your printer, you may cancel any time during the print job.

Print Later
You have an option to select the Print Later box. First, make sure the proper printer driver and port is selected as
well as the print quantity before selecting OK within the Print menu.

If the Print Later box is selected, you will be prompted to enter the name of this job for later use. You can use the
default date stamp or edit the name for your own application.

4-7

Chapter 4: Printing

Once saved, the print job contains the printer driver, printer port, heat, density and print quantity information.

When you are ready to print a label job from the Print Later menu, you can select File and then Manage Print Jobs.

This brings up the Manage Print Jobs dialog box. You can select as many jobs as desired and then send them off to
their respective printers. Jobs will stay in the print database until deleted by the user. The jobs in the database cannot
be altered or changed. This is still done by opening and saving the original template and table to the Print Later
directory as indicated above.

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

TagPrint uses Label Definitions to store information about each label. Label preferences are stored in a labels database
and new labels can be easily added. The label design contains all the information that the printer needs in order to
print each label type.

Choosing a Label Definition

You can choose a label by selecting Select Label... in the File menu. A dialog box will appear where you may choose
a certain label. This dialog box is also used for maintenance of the labels database.

Selecting a Family
A family is a group of labels that belong together. For instance, all the labels that can be printed on the
HellermannTyton TT320SM printer are listed under the TT320SM family.

You can change the family in the Show window by clicking on the pull down menu tab located to the right of the
current label family. Once the pull down menu is open, you may select the label family you desire to use. This will
make it easier to find the label you are looking for.

Selecting a Label Design

The list in the dialog box contains all the labels within the selected family. By clicking the buttons in the header of the
list, the labels can be sorted on name, family, width, and height in ascending or descending order.

5-1

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

The right side of the dialog box provides a description of the highlighted label and a graphic preview allowing you to
easily identify the label you are looking for.

You can select a label by clicking on the name in the list and then click OK.

Creating a New Label Definition

In the Select label dialog box there is a button called New. Pressing this button will create a new label and bring up
the Define label dialog box as shown below.

Label Guide - Size and Shape

The first step in defining a label is to edit the size and shape. Enter the data in the order they appear in the window.

5-2

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Preview

The Preview window allows you to see what the label you are defining will look like when you print it. This will allow
you to quickly realize any entry errors that may exist.

Name

You may Name your label anything you like. Ideally you will name it something you will easily remember. The label
name must be unique within each family with a maximum of 32 characters.

Family

TagPrint Pro allows you to group labels into Families for easy organization. The labels come grouped by their print
technologies, but you may organize them in any way you wish. You may choose an existing Family name by clicking
on the tab to the right of the Family box. You may also create a new Family of labels by simply entering a new name
in the box. Family names have a maximum of 32 characters and are always upper case.

Description

The Description box allows you to display any information about a label that may be useful to a user. This same
information will display when you are choosing labels. You may enter as many lines of information as you like, but
only 3 lines will display in the label selection screen. Entering information into the Description box is entirely
optional.

Width

Enter the horizontal Width of the label type. Use up to 2 decimals.

Height

Enter the vertical Height of the label type. Use up to 2 decimals.

Rectangular/Elliptical

The shape of the label can be changed between rectangular and elliptical.
Note: If you wish to define round labels, select elliptical and set the length and width to the same value.

5-3

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Radius

Rounded corners may be added to rectangular labels by making Radius any number larger than 0. The larger the
number, the more rounded the corner. Radius will be shaded out if Elliptical is selected for the label shape.

TT printer type

If the label will be used with a Thermal Transfer printer you should choose the TT printer type option. This option will
activate some options that apply only to this type of printer.

Label Guide - Page Layout

The label guides second page sets up the label page size for the printer. This is where you enter the information pertaining to the label itself.

Preview
Just like the first screen of the Label guide, the Preview window allows you to see what the label you are defining will
look like when you print it.

Sheet Size
If you are printing with a thermal transfer or dot matrix printer, you will need to define a custom page size. To achieve
this, you must select User Defined. If you are using a label for a laser printer or ink jet you will most likely want to
choose Letter.

Width

If you have chosen User Defined under Sheet size you must enter the custom width of your label. Measure the full
width of paper backing for the label you wish to define. Enter that number here.

5-4

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Length

Like width, if you have chosen User Defined under Sheet size you must enter the custom length of your label.
Measure the distance from the top of one label to the top of the next label. Enter that number here.

Portrait/Landscape
Select your label orientation. Landscape makes the page wider than it is tall. Portrait makes the sheet taller than it
is wide.

Horizontal Settings

Columns - Enter the number of label columns across the sheet horizontally.
Gap - Enter the horizontal gap between the labels.
Repeat - Automatic calculation of the horizontal distance from the side of one label to the same side of the next
label.

Vertical Settings

Rows - Enter the number of label rows from top to bottom on the sheet.
Gap - Enter the vertical gap between the label rows.
Repeat - Automatic calculation of the vertical distance from the top of one label to the top of the next label.

5-5

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Label Guide - Thermal Transfer Settings

The thermal transfer settings dialog box will only appear if you checked TT printer type on the first dialog box of the
Label Design guide. If you do not see this screen in your software and you are using a HellermannTyton thermal
transfer printer, go back to the first screen and check the box next to TT printer type.
These settings tell your thermal transfer how to recognize where your label stops and how large the label is. It is
critical that these settings are correct when entering a custom label.

Media

The media setting tells the printer about the type of label you are using. Select the setting that best describes your
label.

5-6

Continuous -

Continuous labels do not have separations between the labels. Usually labels of this type are
cut by hand or with an external cutter.
Note: See special instructions in Chapter 6 for printing continuous labels on a
HellermannTyton thermal transfer printer.

Gap -

Gap labels have a gap between labels where you can see the underlying liner. The Gap is
usually at least 1/8 long. Other labels may have black printing on the back side of the liner
that exactly matches up with the length of the label. If your label fits this description, use the
Gap setting.

Black mark -

Black mark labels have a thin black line printed on the back of the liner. The black line is
usually under 1/4 thick. The black line typically falls right under the gap between the labels.
If you label fits this description, use the Black mark setting.

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Gap/Mark Width

The Gap/Mark width adjustment should match the physical size of the Gap or Black mark of the label you are
using. The measurement should be approximated based on an actual measurement. The actual number used for the
Gap/Mark width may vary from the physical size, but this is a very good starting point.

Gap/Mark Offset

The Gap/Mark offset is used on labels where the Gap or the Black mark is not at the true top of the label.

Label Guide - Groups and Margins

The final step in the label design guide is to set up how you want your labels to print on the sheet. You can group
your labels for printing and set the margins in this dialog box.

5-7

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Column Groups

In certain special circumstances, your labels may not be spaced evenly over the page. They may need to be grouped
for one reason or another. TagPrint Pro gives you the ability to print in these groups. The default grouping for labels
is 1. Unless you have a unique spacing requirement, do not adjust the Column Groups number.

A
B
C
Above are examples of column groupings. Example A shows column groups set to 1, Example B shows column
groups set to 2, and example C shows column groups set to 3.

Row Groups

Row groups are just like column groups except that they group rows. The default grouping for labels is 1. Unless
you have a unique spacing requirement, do not adjust the Column Groups number.

A
B
C
Above are examples of column groupings. Example A shows row groups set to 1, Example B shows row groups set to
2, and example C shows row groups set to 3.

5-8

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Margins
Margins are used to position labels on the sheet. TagPrint Pro allows you to adjust the Top and Left margins to any
value you would like to use. The Bottom and Right margins are automatically calculated based on the other label
definition information. The amount of Margin space allowed can be calculated by taking the defined page size and
subtracting the label size. You may need to print a number of test labels with different margins to customize the
software to your printer and your labels.

Top Margin Enter the distance from the top edge of the paper to where the first label starts.
Left Margin Enter the distance from the left edge of the paper to the left edge of the first label.
Bottom Margin - The bottom margin is automatically calculated based on what you have entered in the Top
margin and what you entered in the page size and label size.
Right Margin The right margin is automatically calculated based on what you have entered in the Left margin
and what you entered in the page size and label size.

Testing Your Label Preferences

When you have finished entering all your label information into the Label Guide, you will want to print some test runs
to see if it prints correctly. TagPrint Pro has added the Test function just for this purpose.

Make sure your printer is connected and ready to print (see your printers manual for these instructions). When it is,
click Test to print one page.
Note: If you are printing with a dot matrix, laser, or ink jet printer, you may want to load plain paper for a test print
first. This will save you from wasting labels.
This function will print a thin line right at the border of your defined label. This will allow you to quickly and easily see
any errors in the label definition. If you are using a dot matrix, laser, or ink jet printer and you have printed the test on
plain paper, line the label page and your paper page up to one another. Next, hold the labels up to a light. You
should be able to see where the test border lines up with the label. If the test border does not print where you would
like it to, simply go back and change items in the label definition that will correct your problem.
When you are fairly sure your label preferences are close, you may want to try a sheet of labels to verify your settings.
Remember, you do not need to be exact. Your printer will likely vary from page to page anyway and most printing
applications do not require exact tolerances. You should be able to tune the software to within 1/16th of an inch
depending on your printer type.

Completing Your Label Definition

Once you have entered all your label information and printed test pages, you will be ready to finalize your label
definition. You will be able to go back and change your settings later.

Simply click Finish to finalize your settings and save them in the label database. Once you have done this, you will be
taken back to the label selection dialog box.

5-9

Chapter 5: Label Definitions

Modifying an Existing Label

You may need to edit an existing label to better suit your particular printer or for custom applications. Always be
careful when changing pre-defined labels. You may want to write the preferences before you start changing them.
First, you will need to go to the File menu and choose Select Label.... The Select Label dialog box will appear.

Simply click Change... to open the labels preferences.

Make any necessary changes to the labels preferences. You may want to refer to the section on adding a new label
definition. It explains what the different functions do.
When you have finished making all your changes, you will need to finalize your changes. To do this, simply click
Finish in the last page of the Label guide. Because you are changing an existing label, you will be warned with the
following dialog box.

If you are sure about the changes you want to make, click Yes. If you are not sure about the changes, click No and
you will be returned to the Label Guide. At any point in the Label Guide, you can click Cancel to revert to all the original settings. Any changes you have made will be lost.
Note: Any label designs that you saved prior to changing the label preferences will retain the OLDER preferences
unless you open the saved label design, select the NEWER label preferences, and re-save the label design.

Deleting a Label
A label may be deleted from the labels database by first selecting the label and then pressing the Delete button on
your keyboard. To prevent you from deleting a label by mistake, the program will prompt you before the label is
deleted.

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

You will need the information in this section only if you have purchased a HellermannTyton thermal transfer printer
with your TagPrint Pro software. All users of other thermal transfer printers or other types of printers should refer to
the users manual for that printer.

Printer Driver Installation

The drivers for HellermannTytons thermal transfer printers have been included on CD for your convenience. These are
modern 32-bit drivers for your printer and are needed to print to our line of thermal transfer printers.
Note: If you are upgrading from TagPrint Pro 6.0, you will still need to install these drivers. The drivers included with
TagPrint Pro 6.0 are older, 16-bit drivers and are not compatible with TagPrint Pro Version 2.0.

Installation Instructions
Installation of printer drivers is made easy by modern operating systems. Windows operating systems all walk you
through the process of adding printers. To start the process, click on the Windows Start button.

Go to Settings and choose the Printers option by clicking on it with your mouse.
Next the printers folder will open.

Double-click on the Add Printer icon in the Printers window. An Add Printer Wizard window will appear.

6-1

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

Click Next to start the installation process.

Unless you have purchased specific hardware to use your thermal transfer printer as a network printer, choose Local
printer and click Next. You will still be able to print through your network to the thermal transfer printer (as with
any other printer), but you will need to have the printer directly connected to a PC. In addition, the PC must be on.
Refer to your Microsoft Windows users guide on how to connect a printer so that you can print over a network.
The next screen will ask you for the type of printer that you have.

Since the HellermannTyton thermal transfer printers are specialized, they are not listed in this window. Instead, you
must click Have Disk.... Make sure you have your TagPrint Pro Installation CD in your computers CD drive.

6-2

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

Make sure A:\ is entered in the box labeled Copy manufacturers files from:. Click Browse....

The Open dialog box will appear. Depending on the type of operating system you have, double-click on one of the
folders listed under a:\.
If you have: Windows 98SE choose WIN98
If you have: Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 5.0 or Windows 2000 choose NTXP

When you have opened a folder, a file named OEMSETUP.INF will be displayed in the File name: entry box. Click OK
when everything is correct.
Check that the folder name is correct in the Copy manufacturers files from: entry box and click OK to move to the
printer selection screen.
You should see all the HellermannTyton printers listed in this dialog box. Choose the printer that you have and click
Next.
Choose the correct available port for your computer. For most computers, you should choose LPT1. Only choose a
different port if you know your computer has been configured for a different port.*
* If LPT1 does not show up in this menu, make sure no other devices are connected to your printer (LPT1) port, restart
your computer, and run the Add printer wizard again. Some Windows 98 users may need to have some other printer already configured for the printer port (LPT1) for the port to show up in this window. In that case, follow these
instructions again after you have configured a standard driver for LPT1.
After you have chosen the correct port for your computer, click Next.

Check to make sure that the printer name corresponds with the type of printer you wish to install. We recommend
that you leave the driver with its default name, but you may re-name it at this point if you will remember it later.
At this screen you must also choose if you want to make your thermal transfer printer your default printer. As a
general rule, make your default printer the one that you will print with the most often.
When everything is correct on this screen, click Next.

6-3

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

The final screen of the Wizard asks you if you would like to print a test page. You do NOT want to print a test page
at this time. Choose the No option in this window. You will not harm anything if you choose Yes, but
HellermannTyton label sizes vary greatly and the printer would not likely print a very clear test page with our
specialized labels.
Click Finish to install the HellermannTyton driver on your computer. If the installer finds duplicate files on your
computer, follow the recommendation that is listed.

Your new HellermannTyton driver should now be listed in the printers folder.

This section of the printer preferences should not be changed unless you have a specific reason for doing so. You may
type anything in comments that you would like, but Separator page should remain set to (none).

Printing Preferences
Choose the Printing Preferences button and this screen will follow.
Layout:
Orientation - All of the pre-defined labels for the thermal transfer printers in TagPrint Pro were set up using the
Portrait setting. Unless you have a specific use for it, keep this option on Portrait.

Paper/Quality:
Paper Source - Paper source allows you to control how the printer dispenses labels. You may choose one of
three options.

6-6

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

Media - This controls the speed at which the printer moves material past the print head while printing.
This setting is measured in ips or (inches per second). This setting tends to interact with the printer density
setting. Slowing the print speed will effectively increase the print density. Experiment for best results.
Note: See the following section on Device Options to learn more about the print density setting
TT1210 - Print range: (2 ips to 6 ips). Recommended setting: 4 ips.
TT320SM - Print range (1 ips to 2 ips). Recommended setting: 2 ips.
Copy Count - Copy Count controls the number of labels that TagPrint Pro will print. For best results, leave this number at (1) and control the number of copies through TagPrint Pro.
Print quality - The print quality option is the density setting for the printer. This setting can be set from (Density 0 Density 15). Most ribbon/material combinations will require a setting higher than 7. As a general rule of
thumb, set the printer speed first, then fine tune the density setting for the best output.
Too low of a density setting will leave your print too light. Too high of a density setting will cause the print to look
bloated and less sharp. Additionally, a density setting that is WAY too high will also cause light print. This is usually
due to the print head burning all the way through the ribbon instead of simply transferring the ink.
You should leave the density setting as low as you can while still producing acceptable print results. The lower setting
will also work best on longer print jobs where the print head tends to stay hotter. Additionally, keeping the density
setting lower will also increase the life of your printhead.

Advanced Properties

The Advanced section of the printer properties allows you to set up parameters for your printer. These settings could
be useful in troubleshooting problems or for advanced users who are running on a network.

Sharing Properties
The sharing properties can be used to share your printer over a network. This option could allow multiple users on a
network to print to the same printer. Users who are unsure about what sharing does should contact their computer
department before changing any of the settings in this section.

Printing Continuous Labels

If you wish to print continuous labels with TagPrint Pro and a HellermannTyton thermal transfer printer, read through
the instructions in this section first.
TagPrint Pro can print continuous material if you have defined it as such in the label definition. (See Chapter 5 for
instructions on defining your label). When using a HellermannTyton thermal transfer printer, continuous labels will
print in such a way that any blank space will be eliminated following printed items.

HellermannTyton
Continuous Printing

Print ends here.

To print full label make a line here.

For example, if you were printing the label shown above, the blank space to the right of the g in the word
Printing will be cut off. The blank space to the Left of the C in the word Continuous will remain, however. In
addition, about 1/16th of an inch of blank space is added on to the end of each label. This is done in an effort to conserve material, especially in cases where the printed text of the label varies in length.
If you wish to keep the printed length of the continuous material consistent, you must include a dot or a line on the
edge of the label design. A small dot is sufficient where you do not wish to see the separator.

Troubleshooting Your Printer

On occasion, your thermal transfer printer may stop functioning normally. Most problems are not major and can be
easily fixed. Following is a list of things to try before you call for tech support of the product:

My Printer is Skipping Labels

If the printer is skipping labels, the gap sensor settings are probably not correct. This can be caused by the printer
gradually losing its settings or by changing the label material type in your printer. Try doing a manual auto-gap reset
on your printer. You can do this by using the following directions:

printers
Load problematic labels in the printer.
Turn off the printer.
Hold down the green button on the top and while you continue to hold it down, turn on the
printer.
Let go of the green button after about 1 or 2 seconds.
The printer will dispense 2-4 rows of labels depending on the size of labels loaded, print some
information, then stop. At this time your printer will be in dump mode.
You will want to take your printer out of dump mode by tapping the green button
once. The printer will print Out of dump.

TT1000 printers

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

My Printer Will Not Print Taller Labels

If the printer is printing all your shorter labels and cutting off the larger labels, you may have a memory shortage on
your printer. The memory may be physically in the printer, but the printer is not recognizing it. The maximum height
that a printer can print is determined by the amount of memory it has. The 203 dpi printers (TT10SM, TT1000)
require approximately 22K of memory for every inch of labels. The 300 dpi printer (TT300SM) requires approximately
47K of memory for each inch of labels. Use the following table to determine how much memory you require for your
application:

As of January 1999, all TT10SM printers come standard with 128K of memory, all TT300SM printers come standard
with 256K of memory, and all TT1000 printers come standard with 256K of memory.
If you need more memory you can order it from your local HellermannTyton distributor. If you have a TT10SM or a
TT300SM, you first need to check if the printer has a memory cartridge installed. You can find the cartridge by looking on the left side of the printer towards the bottom. Your printer will either have a cover or a cartridge installed in
the space. If you do not have a cartridge, you need to order that first before you can add extra memory.

technical support line.
To close the MS-DOS editor, click on the File option and choose the Exit option. The blue window will go away.

If you followed these instructions, you are now ready to print your taller labels on your printer.

TT1210 Sensor Problems

If you are experiencing problems running labels in the TT1210 printer, you may want to check the movable gap sensor
that is installed in the printer. It may have been bumped or moved in shipping.

Typical Problems
Printer does not want to stop at the gaps between the labels. Printer will also display alternating flashing lights on the
front of the printer. Make sure to first perform an auto-sense gap adjustment as described earlier in this chapter. If
that did not solve your problem, you may want to check the sensor positioning.

6-10

Chapter 6: Thermal Transfer Printers

Only newer TT1210 printers have the movable sensor. If your printer has a metal label guide located under the print
head then you have a TT1210 without an adjustable sensor. If your printer has BLACK plastic label guide located
under the print head then you have an adjustable sensor.

How to Adjust the Sensor

The TT1210s gap sensor is installed underneath the printhead of the printer. You should see two black plastic guides
between which you normally load the labels. The edge of the top plastic piece has a green triangle-shaped piece that
also guides the labels.
If you look underneath the bottom black plastic guide, you will see green plastic tabs stick out below the guide. If you
gently squeeze the tabs together, you will find that you can move the sensor back and forth horizontally. Try a
different position for the sensor and do another auto-gap sequence. Continue this process until you find a placement
of the sensor that works for you.

Make sure that you have a full registered version of TagPrint Pro installed. You can check this by looking
at the About... option in the Help menu. If you have properly installed the software, the serial number
should be listed there.
Make sure that you have the correct driver installed. Use the instructions from earlier in this chapter to
install the correct drivers for your printer.
Make sure that the printer cable is connected on both ends and that the LPT1 port on your computer is
configured correctly. Try swapping printer cables with another computer in the office. This is the problem
more often than people would think.
Try printing to a different printer. Make sure that the printer port on the computer is working correctly.
Make sure your computer is compatible with TagPrint Pro. You need Windows 95/98 or Window NT 4.0
(or better) to properly run TagPrint Pro.
Make sure the printer is on and ready to print. Make sure the printer is not in pause mode.
Try to re-start your computer. Sometimes just clearing things out of memory will take care of system problems.
Try re-installing the TagPrint Pro software from the original install disks. The original software may have
become corrupted.
Try installing the software on a different computer and testing it with your printer. In doing this, you can
eliminate the computer as being the problem. If the printer works with a different computer, the problem
lies somewhere in the old computer.
Try running the software while not connected to the network (if you are on one).

Returning a Thermal Transfer Printer for Repair

If you believe that your printer is in need of repair, please be sure to call HellermannTyton to have a technical support
person go over the problems with you. Perhaps a solution can be found without having to send it in for repair. If the
technical support person determines that your printer is in need of repair, please follow these instructions:
1.
Call your distributor to request a RGA for your printer. You will need to have the model number and serial
number of your printer ready. Make sure to describe the problem to your distributor for the RGA.
2.
You will receive instructions from your distributor on what to do next in the process. The distributor may
have you ship the printer back directly, or they may want you to return the printer to them first.
If your printer is still covered under the 1-year warranty, there will be no repair charges incurred. The print head is
covered for 90 days from purchase. You are responsible for shipping the printer in its original carton for repair.
HellermannTyton will be responsible for shipping the printer back to you. Expect 4 to 8 weeks for the repair of your
printer.
You will be responsible for any repair charges beyond the warranty period.

Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing problems with the software, read over this section for helpful tips concerning the software. If
you are experiencing a problem with your HellermannTyton thermal transfer printer, first refer to Chapter 6 in this
manual.

Laser Printer: Labels Peeling Off in Printer

We must first mention that we always recommend testing your printer with each and every label type before purchasing our labels. Laser printers are designed for printing plain paper, and at times may not accommodate certain label
products very well. We work very hard to ensure our labels will run in as many printers as possible. Due to the true
nature of this problem, we make no guarantees that our labels will work in every printer. Further, we can not be held
liable for any damages that may occur to your printer in the use of our labels. If you want to purchase a printer
designed specifically to print labels, consider HellermannTytons thermal transfer printer line.
If you are having the above-mentioned problem, it is probably caused by tight radius rollers inside your printer. If the
label sheet is bent at too tight of an angle, the labels will come off by themselves. You may try the following suggestions to increase the chances that our labels will run smoothly through your laser printer.

Use the manual feed tray

Most printers have an extra manual feed tray located on the printer. We recommend using this tray for all our label
products. Some printers have designed this tray for use with thicker paper stock - like our labels. You may have more
success printing this way. Additionally, using the manual feed tray may also make the paper path a straighter one.
For best results, feed the label pages one sheet at a time through the printer.

Open the rear door on the printer

Many users find that opening the rear door of the printer is useful. The reason is similar to why you should use the
manual feed tray: it straightens the paper path. Some printers may allow you to have a virtually straight paper path
when you open the rear door of the printer. The HP Laser Jet II is one example of this type of printer.

Manually adjust the paper thickness

Some of the more deluxe laser printers allow for some adjustment in the paper thickness. If you are able, try to
increase this setting. Experiment for best results.

If nothing works...
If none of the options listed above help in your printer, we recommend that you discontinue using our labels with the
problematic printer. Perhaps try a different laser printer in your office if it is available. If you decide to purchase a new
laser printer for our labels, please be sure to test it as well. As mentioned before, you may want to consider our thermal transfer, dot matrix, or ink jet solutions.

All Printers: Alignment for Labels is Off

All label definitions have been tested at the factory for accuracy, but occasionally a printer will cause our pre-set label
definitions to print. If this is the case, please refer to Chapter 5 which deals with label definitions. Adjust the top and
left margins if the labels are printing off consistently across or down the page. Adjust the label width/height or vertical/horizontal repeat if the labels are not all off by a consistent amount.
The easiest way to adjust the definition is to first align the top left label correctly. Next, go back and adjust the label
width and height. Finally, adjust the label vertical and horizontal repeat (if applicable). When you find the right settings, make sure to write them down should you ever need them again in the future.

General Troubleshooting Suggestions

Make sure that you have a full registered version of TagPrint Pro installed. You can check this by looking
at the About... option in the Help menu. If you have properly installed the software, the serial number
should be listed there.
Make sure that you have the most recent driver installed for your printer. Check the internet or contact
your printer manufacturer to verify the version. In the case of dot matrix printers, you may want to revert
to an older and less complex version of the driver. Find out what generic Epson driver your printer emulates and try using that driver. You may even want to re-install the driver that you already have installed.
Make sure that the printer cable is connected on both ends and that the LPT1 port on your computer is
configured correctly. Try swapping printer cables with another computer in the office. This is the problem
