1989 Green Bay Closed Class

Session 5
Luella S. Overeem
THE SILENCE IS MADE FLESH
Good morning. Ive been asked to mention that we will have coffee and tea at the break. And we
have half an hour in-between sessions this morning. So we start again at 10:30 and thats because
some people have to leave a little early to get planes. Lorraine called this morning and she
wanted me to remember to give you all her love. Shes been right in touch with us all the time,
been with us. And I guess, before I forget it, I want to thank all of you, thank BeBe for managing
the class and arranging everything, to Bob for doing the tapes and all that, and Ethel and
everybody at the book table for all the work theyve done, a lot of work. And Bruce Becker and
Mary Jane for the beautiful tape meetings. And Im so grateful to all of you to Ron Haskell and
Raymond for being doormen, and to all of you for being here because it takes all of us; its
very important. We cant divide it up; its all of us. And Im very grateful to you all.
There was someone asked a question on the phone which seemed like a good place to start:
I know theres supposed to be a total silence during meditation. So where does the mind fit in?
And thats a good question. The mind is our instrument of awareness avenue of awareness
and we prepare for that silence by using our mind, reminding ourselves of the letter of Truth, the
principles. And sometimes, if theres some specific problem, we have a more specific reminder
of certain principles than of others. Otherwise, its just whatever principle seems to come to you
at that time that you remember and ponder. And then, be still! We have to stop the thinking and
the talking, and be still.
And its this Word that we receive in the silence that becomes the flesh of our experience. Thats
it: thats the substance, the source of everything in our experience. Theres no separation between
inner and outer; its the Word which we receive in the silence that manifests as everything in our
outer experience. And its how we learn about the real life, the reality, the spiritual identity. Its
all has to come to us in meditation or we dont understand it, we dont receive it.
And this really is treatment. Treatment is preparing our preparation for the silence, because its
the silence that does what we call healing. Silence that we experience that appears then as our
spiritual the silence is our spiritual fruitage and it appears as our spiritual health, and supply,
and our harmony in every area of our life.
And its in that silence that we realize the nature of the real universe, the nature of God, the
nature of individual being. It is the cause; its the source. There isnt any outer source, or cause,
or power; all of it is within. Its our contact with God in meditation that appears outwardly as
harmony in all every area. Its the life by Grace, and thats how we let it flow out into our
experience.
You cant separate it, and you cant separate any one individual from it. If you have one
individual that youre believing isnt God, then you arent you dont have God realized at all.

Its all ONE; you cant separate it. And thats the point the principle that Emerson made in
that poem, Each and All. Its why I thought he makes it so beautifully:
All are needed by each one;
Nothing is fair or good alone.1
Its all ONE. And as you work with his poems, its like a class. He knew he had the realization of
the truth, and he says it so beautifully.
One other point that somebody, I guess, asked what it means: greater works than these shall ye
do.2
And it seems to me that what it means is that any help that we get from each other, or from a
practitioner, or a teacher is a temporary help. Its a lift and raises us into a higher realization, or it
can. But the greater works in your experience are going to be when you make that contact
yourself within. Thats the greater works that youre going to do, far greater experiences than
any help you get from coming through, seemingly, someone else. Its the when you make the
contact within yourself and have this direct God-experience, thats the greater works that youre
going to experience. Teacher or practitioner can lift you and give you help in a crisis situation,
but nobody can carry you into the kingdom of heaven; thats the greater works the greater
experience that each one of us is going to have as we make this contact in meditation. And
keep making it and live to where were living by it, living by Grace.
And thats the whole purpose of this teaching is that it isnt really a teaching. Its an experience
that each one of us learn to make that contact within to realize our spiritual identity, and find the
truth being taught to us from within. Receive it, hear it, because it doesnt come from outside
anywhere; it comes from within your own consciousness.
And thats the whole reason for this work is to help us turn within so that were making our own
contact with God. And thats what appears outwardly is the flesh of our experience. And thats
the December Letter 74 and thats the 62 Pacific Palisades, reel 2, side 2. Thats a wonderful
class and I know you all know about it; Ive been talking about it for years. Theres two of them
two of those hours of tape are in these Letters. I think its November and December, one side
of one and one side of two.3 Because thats the important thing that we dont just go on forever
as he says in that tape sitting at the feet of the master trying to find God. Weve already found

God; we know where God is. And we can make the contact, and thats what we have to do and
live out from that that we are live out from that Being, spiritual identity.
And thats our giving; thats our being an instrument. Its what the function of the Christ is and
thats the purpose of meditation that we make that contact. It isnt really a contact, because its
us. But its an awareness of our inner real self, and that is what dissolves this material sense that
we all are born into and living under the material sense of existence into the realization of
spiritual identity of all being. Theres nothing but God.
We have a material sense of each other, and of the world, and of our bodies, and our business:
thats humanhood. But its our inner work our inner realization in the silence thats going to
dissolve that false sense and reveal what the truth is: the truth of our being. And as soon as we
realize it, it manifests; you dont have to do anything else. Once youve made that had that
inner experience, it appears outwardly AS: it appears as harmony in every area of your life. And
thats the one thing we have to do is make that contact thats the spiritual fruitage and then it
appears outwardly. And it keeps right on unfolding, but we have to abide in it.
And thats the theme of the Letters of 1974 is the realization of spiritual identity recognizing
the one I, the one Self, of all being and then it appears as whats called the added things.4 But
they arent anything separate; theyre not added except in the sense that theyre added to our
awareness. We become aware that were having everything we have need of, as fast as we need
it, if not sooner.
And its that realization of I within us thats our dominion. Youve got dominion, not humanly
and not over anybody, but over your own life. By letting the I that we are govern us consciously
brings everything seems to bring everything to us that we need of. But its not coming from
out here; its coming from within. Its drawing it out from within, and we dont have to take
thought for it. Because any of the taking thought is all for the forms out here which are merely
concepts.
This inner experience, realization, is our protection against its what used to be called
protective work which just means that we have to know theres nothing to be protected from
since theres just one power. But we have to have that realization before we start out in the
morning and many times during the day. We need to have a few longer periods when we can
have time to sit and ponder, and be quiet. But when were out at work and whatever we have to
be doing during the day, theres got to be these moments frequent, many, many times a day, of
just a few seconds of remembering remembering that that one I is governing our lives.
Just you dont have to say a word, but your thought has to go to it. You have to remember
consciously that God is right there within you governing, living your life, living Its life as you.
And as you keep that contact all day long, and at night, and before you go to sleep at night, it

doesnt take very long before you know that youre living by Grace. That all these beautiful
things that happen in your life are not anything youve thought up, but theyre flowing out from
within; thats the word that youve experienced that becomes flesh.
And in that sense, it gets easier. And its easier in many ways, because you dont have to try so
hard to remember to turn within as you do it for awhile at first, a long time maybe. It gets more
automatic; it really does. Your thought is on it; you dont really have to remind yourself very
often because youre in it. But the more realization you have, it seems as though, the more things
you see that you have to see through.
And in many ways, it doesnt get any easier as we go along. But we have the assurance that we
have this Grace right here with us to carry us through. A lot of things dont get any easier, like
giving classes. [Laughter] They seem to just get harder. So were here to be instruments for God:
giving to the world, revealing Itself to the world.
I didnt I dont think I said much about supply, and I wanted to remind you that this chapter in
Living Between Two Worlds which is long out of print, but if you can get it somewhere. Also its
the 1967 Letters. And chapter 11, which is from the 1964 Oahu/Maui Class, and its reel 6, both
sides. 5 Its on spiritual supply, and this is really one of the best chapters on supply thats in the
writings. You can get the tape, even though you cant get the book. And what is it, chapter I
think chapter 12, or else 13 in The Art of Spiritual Healing is very good on the subject of
spiritual supply.6 But Ive always liked this chapter in Living Between Two Worlds. I want to go
over a little bit of that:
In the metaphysical world, it is common practice to try to demonstrate supply, home,
companionship,7 and all that, but we that isnt the way we work.
In The Infinite Way, this is an incorrect basis8 because if youre working to demonstrate
anything at all, youre it says, he says, it is virtually (a) sin,9 because its an
acknowledgment of lack.
Its acknowledging an absence of something, and there is no absence of anything. Its
omnipresent; all of God is omnipresent. And so there isnt any supply thats absent, whether its

of money, or health, or harmonious relationships, or anything else in our experience. Its all
present; there is nothing missing. All of God is omnipresent, and God is the substance of
everything there is, all of reality. But we have to become aware of it.
And the hardest part seems to be to learn that we dont have to do anything out here. And that
takes a long time to learn that, and for a long time were in-between: were doing both things.
Were depending to less and less degree on the outer, because were depending more and more
on our contact within with God. And were trying to were practicing not going outside our
consciousness for anything, because its all within.
But it doesnt do any good unless youre making the contact within, unless youre conscious of it
that thats where it is, and that youre consciously turning within and opening yourself to it: to
wholeness, to fulfillment. Because its nothing out here thats ever going to be fulfilling and
nothing of any form is going to bring any fulfillment. Even if it does for temporarily, it doesnt
last, it doesnt stay, because it isnt the real thing and theres no law sustaining it. Its a concept.
As long as we are living in material sense, we will think of supply as material,10
something outside of us that we have to somehow acquire like money, (or) home, (or)
automobiles. But in the real world of Spirit, supply is not external to us, 11
And its not something to be attained or acquired; its something to be given out. And the more
you can give out, or release, or let flow out from you, the more you have; thats what you have.
Whatever you can let flow out or give, thats what you have. You dont have anything out here.
Its like having a dream: anything that you have that you dont have the consciousness of. And
thats what it means to have the consciousness of it. When you know its consciousness is the
substance of all form, and you get to where youre not putting any dependence on anything in the
external realm. Even though you make use of it all, your dependence isnt on it. You know what
the substance of it is; you know what its made of. You know its all God, and you know it has to
come out from within you.
When we understand that, we can look at everyone and see how wholly independent each
one is of the other because of the principle of Self-completeness.12
That the one Life is maintaining and sustaining everyone. We arent dependent on each other,
and yet at the same time, we have to realize that were one with each other. You cant cut
somebody off and say theyre not the child of God but everyone else is, because then you dont

have any child of God at all, including yourself. Its one life; its Gods life, Gods mind. And
God is the only cause, the only power.
And its a wholeness, a Self-completeness, and thats what we have to know and then rest in. We
dont have to continually say the words, but we do, now and then, have to remind ourselves of it.
But we have to realize it, and rest in it, and live out from it. That its none of it is mine; its all
Gods.
We have to release any sense of having anything of our own, separate and apart from God.
Whether its a body, a business, a talent, a gift of any kind, its not ours; its God expressing as
us; its all God. And as soon as we think of it as being my thing, my ability, or my something,
weve lost it. Weve cut ourselves right off from it; weve cut it off at the roots. We have to know
that its God thats our supply of everything there is; its Gods life.
The earth is the Lords, and the fulness thereof.13 And its that realization, and you start out by
acknowledging it, recognizing it, and then realizing it in meditation. And when you know it,
since its all Gods and God is all there is to us, therefore Son all that I have is thine.14 So we
have everything that God has if we can accept it and not look out here.
And then we come to that other one, the final realization which is I am, I am it, thats what I am,
that constitutes my being and I am the supply, I am the health, I am the one power. But its not a
human I; its I God within us which is no longer separated. And thats the goal to attain that
realization of spiritual identity.
So he says, since we have all of infinity right within us, why does it seem as though so many
people are limited?15
And the only answer is that they have a material sense of supply. Theyre thinking that supply is
something out here, formed; it isnt out here. Thats our concept of it, our picture of it. But the
real thing the supply, the essence of it is God, and its all within us.
(So) there (really) is no such thing as lack or abundance.16
Theres all just infinity. And its as we can open ourselves to this silence within, the Word of
God, it flows through, and appears as, takes the form of, everything we have need of. You dont
have to do anything out here except to realize it, recognize it. And that doesnt mean we all stop

working and sit on a park bench somewhere, or wait for the groceries to come in the window. Its
that our dependence is not on these things anymore.
We do our work because we have to be an instrument; we have to serve. We dont do it for the
purpose of getting a paycheck. Were doing it we have a secret reason for our work, and a
secret work that nobody knows about: were serving God; were being an instrument. And no
matter what your work is the form of it out here, what the world thinks youre doing youre
doing that, but youre doing something else within you. Youre being an instrument of that I
within. And your main the main part of your work, the world knows nothing about at all. Its
your recognition of spiritual identity. Its your giving God the credit for everything you see going
on in your business, in your daily life wherever it is, with every person you have a contact with.
So we have this secret work that were doing all the time and we dont tell anybody about it.
But we also might not have all these opportunities if we didnt have our jobs and our other our
work, whatever it is, in the human world; thats the way it appears outwardly and we do that to
the best of our ability. Whatever it is were doing out here, we dont put any labels on that either:
we dont call it a good job or a not-very-good job. We dont put any labels on it.
We do what weve got to do at this point outwardly, but inwardly were knowing that what were
really doing is Gods work; were being an instrument. And youll find, as so many people have
for all down through the years, that they do get recognition from outside: they get promotions,
they get pay increases, and they get higher opportunities of serving, more fulfilling work. But it
doesnt come from going after it out here, it comes from doing your spiritual work within
yourself, the best you can do it.
At all times, youre doing your human sense job. No matter what level it seems to be at, youre
doing it to the best of your ability, but youre giving God all the credit. And as you do that, it
opens up: your experience unfolds, and things become better humanly, just as your work does
professionally. Whatever work youre in arts or whatever it is you get better at it. The more
credit you give to God, the better you get at it, because youre letting it unfold from within. You
arent claiming that its your gift or your ability.
So thats the way we get attain fulfillment in our work in any whatever the work is, by
living by the principles, and giving God all the credit, and seeing it all as an opportunity to serve.
Its releasing this love whether its in our work or in our home impersonalizing everything,
and realizing theres just this one Self.
We take all the good from people and give it back to God. And we take away all the error that we
were believing was there because there isnt any at all. And this is all this all comes under the
heading of giving, of giving, of being a transparency; we have to do it in every area of life.
And thats the one way it is to find your niche is to do what comes to you, do whats at hand, find
your place. You find it only when God is being fulfilled as you, and you give God the
opportunity to use you. You make yourself an instrument. You dont need anything else; Gods

Grace really is our sufficiency in all things.

But its those moments of being still during the day, you have to find some place where you can
have a few seconds of turning within. It gets easier all the time to do that as youre looking for
them, making sure you have a few moments out of every hour to remember that its what youre
doing, remember what youre here for and what you are doing. Its not what it appears to be; its
a giving of recognition that this is an all-spiritual universe.
And there is no reason for it to ever run out! You dont have to retire at some certain age; this
kind of work you have to keep right on doing eternally. You cant quit at some time and rest on
any laurels; you have to keep this right up.
[Silence]
I think it served a good purpose: weve had more meditation during the class. And thats really
more valuable than me talking all the time; I have to get hit over the head to quit talking so
much. But we need to practice this listening within, because thats where youre getting it from;
youre being taught from within.
All shall be taught of God.17 Thats the only place any real teaching comes from is from within
you. And so the more practice you get at being receptive and listening, the better.
[Silence]
And get a little meditation in-between, too, when we come back at 10:30.
Thank you.
