Bombay HC upholds ban on slaughter of bulls,


bullocks in Maharashtra, decriminalises beef
possession
On 6 May 2016 the Bombay High Court upheld the ban on slaughter of bulls
and bullocks in Maharashtra indicating that consumption of beef will remain
banned across the state.
However, a division bench of Justices AS Oka and SC Gupte struck down
provisions that criminalised possession of beef of animals slaughtered outside
the state.
Highlights of the Judgement are;
The bench said only "conscious possession" of the meat of animals
slaughtered in the state will be held as an offence.

With this ruling, the burden of proving innocence will not be on individuals
and the onus to prove that the law was violated lies on the prosecution.
The High Court said the sections that criminalised possession of beef is an
infringement on the right to privacy of citizens.
As per the Act, slaughter attracts a five-year jail term and 10000 rupees fine
while possession of meat of bull or bullocks.

Pakistan won 2016 Asia Kabaddi Championship


Cup
On 6 May 2016 Defending Champion Pakistan won the Asian Kabaddi
Championship 2016 (Circle Style) that held at Wah Cantonment in
Pakistan. It defeated India by 19 points.
Pakistan achieved 50 points against 31 by India in the final of the
tournament. It is second successive win for Pakistan in the Asian
Kabaddi title as they won it in 2012.
Asia Kabaddi Championship Cup 2016;
This is the third edition of the Asian Kabaddi Championship (Circle
Style) held in Pakistan. The second edition was also held in the same
country.

The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) in collaboration with POF


Sports Control Board under the banner of the Asian Kabaddi
Federation organised the championship.
Seven teams including India, Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Nepal,
Sri Lanka and Pakistan had participated in the International event.

ICICI Bank signs MoU with New Development


Bank

New Development Bank (NDB) is a multilateral development bank established


by the BRICS states which are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
On 6 May 2016 ICICI Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
the New Development Bank (NDB) to establish a strategic partnership in the
areas of bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and human
resources.
With this, ICICI Bank became the first financial institution in India to sign the
pact with NDB.
The MoU was signed by first President of NDB KV Kamath and ICICI Bank head
Chanda Kochhar in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Benefits of the MoU;


It will enable NDB to leverage the deep market access and insight of ICICI
Bank in Indias financial markets.
It will help NDB in exploring rupee-denominated bonds in the domestic and
international markets.
It will build a long-term, stable and mutually beneficial relationship in the
areas of bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and human
resources.
It will make both the lenders collaborate to fund development projects
in India.

Switzerland government honours Yash Chopra


with Bronze statue
On 4 May 2016 Swiss government honoured the late bollywood
film maker Yash Chopra with a special statue.

The bronze statue of Yash Chopra weighing about 250 kilos


was inaugurated by his wife Pamela Chopra and daughter-inlaw Rani Mukerjee.
This statue was installed at middle of the Interlaken which is
inside the Kursaal area near the Congress Centre which is a
prime, popular spot for the tourists.

He was honoured as he shot most of his romantic films in the


lush mountains of Switzerland, which opened a legacy of South
Asian tourists flocking to that country.
