Alcatel-Lucent 9471 Wireless Mobility Manager

Mobility Management Entity/Serving GPRS Support Node

Release WM9.0

The Alcatel-Lucent 9471 Wireless Mobility Manager (WMM) is a combined Mobility Management Entity/
Serving GPRS Support Node (MME/SGSN) in 3GPP networks, providing registration, authentication, mobility
and session management, and 2G/3G bearer management of mobile subscribers.

9471 Wireless Mobility Manager

(HP Blade System c7000)

As a MME in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), the

Alcatel-Lucent 9471 WMM delivers exceptional
scaling and messaging performance to support
both the increased signaling traffic and direct
management of thousands of macro and small
cells while also seamlessly interworking with
legacy 2G/3G networks. As a SGSN, the 9471
WMM routes user packet traffic from the radio
access network (RAN) to the Gateway GPRS
Service Node/Packet Data Network Gateway
(GGSN/PGW) or through a pre-Release 8 or
Release 8 direct tunnel providing subscriber
access to external packet data networks. The
9471 WMM also supports combined MME/
SGSN functionality through software upgrades.
Based on industry-standard computing
platforms and the latest generation of advanced
multicore network processors, the 9471 WMM
delivers carrier-grade performance, reliability,
scalability and flexibility.

Features

The Alcatel-Lucent 9471 WMM is a key

component in the Alcatel-Lucent IP Mobile

Platform evolution to Network Functions

Virtualization (NFV) MME and SGSN as the
Virtualized Mobility Manager (VMM)

Benefits
High capacity and scalability: Subscriber
and bandwidth capacity can be scaled
rapidly and flexibly as service demands
increase or change.
Flexibility: Common carrier-grade platform
for deployment as a 2.5G/3G SGSN,
S4-SGSN, 4G/LTE MME, or a combined
MME/SGSN reduces footprint and
improves power efficiency while providing
investment protection.

Reliability: Field-proven software featuring

an advanced memory manager (with
automated recovery), overload control
protection mechanisms, internal dynamic
audits and recovery capabilities and
support for in-service software upgrades
Signaling efficiency: Single 2G/3G/LTE
user equipment (UE) context database;
intra-chassis Gn/S3 signaling and enhanced
paging capabilities reduce network
signaling volume.
Multivendor tested: For seamless
integration into any 2.5G/3G/LTE radio
access and core network environment
End-to-end network management: The
Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware
Manager (SAM) provides common
operations, element management system
(EMS)-based provisioning, pooling and load
balancing, and network level management
across the entire packet core.
Advanced diagnostics/troubleshooting
tools: Unique per-call and cell performance
measurement tools reduce trouble call
resolution times and aid in network and
RF optimization and engineering design.
Subscriber Session Preservation:
Innovative SRS maintains user subscriber
sessions even with full node failure.
