Standards:
Common Core Standards
MST4.I.PS4.4 Students observe and describe the properties of sound, light, magnetism, and
electricity.
MST4.C.P.4.1 Students observe and describe transmission of various forms of energy.
MST4.C.P.4.1I All materials display a range of conductivity. At constant temperature, common
metallic conductors obey Ohms Law.
MST4.C.P.4.1o Circuit components maybe be connected in series or in parallel. Schematic
diagrams are used to represents circuits and circuit elements.
MST4.C.P.4.3 Electrical power and energy can be determined for electric circuits.
ISTE Standards for Students
1. Creativity and innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative
products and processes using technology.
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve
problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digitals tools and resources.
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions.
Lesson Objectives:
o Students will review voltage, current, and resistance.
o Students will review Ohms Law that describes the relationship between voltage, current,
and resistance.
o Students will understand the properties of a circuit in series.
o Students learn to construct a circuit, using a simulation, and know where to place a
battery, resistor, wires, ammeter, and voltmeter.
o Students will be able to use excel in order to graph a voltage vs. current graph and see
test Ohm's Law
Introduce the Learning Activity:
A. I will start by asking my students to recall Ohm's Law (V = IR) and if they understand what
voltage, current, and resistance are and how they apply to series circuits. After students have
reviewed the necessary information, I will take them to my website to show and have them
experiment with two phet simulations. In order to get to these simulations I will first take the
class to my website and have them go to my resources page and click on the first link
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/new. From the main page, I will lead them to

the first simulations called Circuit Construction Kit (DC Only) where they will use the
simulation to construct a series circuit. They will click on the first link again and they will go to a
second simulation called Ohm's Law. Here they will record various voltages and currents that
they will graph in order to test Ohm's Law.
B. In order to get them motivated in the lesson I will mention that Christmas lights are set up in
series. When one light goes out then all the lights of the same color will go out and this will draw
their attention to understanding what happens when a resistors set up in series.
Provide Information:
A. I will provide a worksheet with an example of a circuit connected in series and the definitions
of an ammeter and voltmeter so they can attempt to set them up properly in their circuit. The
worksheet will have the steps they need to complete before they can move on to the second
simulation. In addition, if they do not remember Ohm's Law I will tell them what it is and
explain it to them. After they have completed the Ohm's Law simulation and collected, their
necessary data I will tell them to graph voltage vs. current using excel. I will also walk around
the room and help answer any questions they might have.
Provide Practice:
A. This will probably take two lab session to fully complete. They will not need to hand in the
assignment until the end of the second lab session. During these two days, students can
experiment with the circuit builder and see how resistors, batteries, and wires work with each
other and recording the data from the Ohm's Law simulation.
B. Students will have already have used phet simulations. They will have already had the
opportunity to use Microsoft Excel from previous homework and labs. I will also provide
individual assistance to answer their questions so that they can complete the assignment.
Provide Knowledge of Results:
A. While walking around the lab I will look to see what students are doing and ask them
questions about the circuit they're building. I will point out any improvements that should be
made. I will also mention what is being done well.
B. Although it is not necessary, to hand in the assignment the first lab session if students want
they can hand in a draft of their drawn circuit and graph. This way I could provide written
comments on the draft for improvements that students could make. If not the following lab
session they will receive written comments about their use of the first lab session and the work
that I observed by walking around the classroom.
Review the Activity:
A. As review, I will ask my students about Ohm's Law and how voltage and current relate to each
other. I will also ask them about the voltage and current in a series circuit.
Method of Assessment:

A. In order to asses my students development I will ask them to hand in a printed version of their
graph and drawn out picture of either a circuit connected in series or parallel. They will be
grading using the following rubric they can receive a maximum of 20 points.
