Animation
From our earliest days we are exposed to animated media: Saturday morning
‘toons, Disney movies, and much more. The American animation
industry has evolved, for better or for worse, into a robust, multi-
million dollar industry featuring major players and independent
producers alike. No other medium has the unique feel of animation,
and no other industry has developed in such a unique way.
From childhood favorites to the cutting edge animators of today,
join the Dragon*Con Animation Track for a look through the
animated medium. You’ll have the opportunity to listen to
presentations by some of the key players from new and classic
animation, and participate in workshops to give you insight on how
different forms of animation are crafted and produced.

Anne McCaffrey’s Pern Warner Brothers Monster

The official Anne McCaffrey fan track at Dragon*Con, Weyrfest is the place to
be to discuss and explore Anne McCaffrey’s famous and fabulous universes!
Meet Anne’s co-authors (or Anne herself!), get together with your fandom pals,
and dicker over the details of dragons. For more about our track, check out
dragoncon.org/fan_tracks.php#PERN—where you’ll find our panel schedule,
guest listing, news updates, and a related links page.

Apocalypse Rising
It’s the end of the world as we know it…and we feel
fine. Does the end of the world fascinate you? Do you
love zombies, Jericho, War of the Worlds, Jeremiah,
or I am Legend? Join us at the Apocalypse Rising
track at Dragon*Con!
Apocalypse Rising is in its second year at
Dragon*Con after having a fantastic debut year in
2007. We will be reviving several popular panels
this year, including our religion panel and our
Zombie Squad
survival seminar. Join us for The Future Looks Grim:
Prophecies of the Apocalypse, End of days on Film: Apocalyptic Cinema, The
Apocalypse will be Televised, Dead Man Viewing, and several other exciting
panels all devoted to our favorite subject, the end of the world.
And don’t forget to join us for our survival game where you can find out if you
can win in a survival of the fittest, or if you’ll be the first one fed to the zombies!

Art Show Forums and Workshops

We are planning many exciting events for the 2008 Dragon*Con Art Show
including the annual Iron Artist competition, a large canvas on which all the
attending Artists can draw or paint (which will be sold at the Art Show voice

British Sci-fi Media
The British Science Fiction Media Track is coming along magnificently this
2008 convention year. We have a new website, exciting new guests, and a
bigger track room. As most of you know, Dragon*Con is “sharing the joy
that is Dragon*Con,” as Pat Henry would say, by extending ourselves into an
new hotel! Taking advantage of the space, the Brittrack is moving from the
Hyatt over to our new sister hotel the Sheraton! We will be located on the
second level of the Sheraton in the room titled “Valdosta.”
In the guest department so far we have Gareth David-Lloyd, who plays Ianto on
Torchwood! Several old and new faces will be returning this 2008 as well. For
Monty Python Costume
more details on guests keep an eye on the Dragon*Con website (www.dragoncon.
org) or for more information, visit us at dragoncon.org/fan_tracks.php#BRIT.
Our programming will be posted on our website soon, as well as a request for
panelists! Yes, you can be a panelist for the Brittrack! Interested? Then go to our
website and fill out a panelist application! We look forward to seeing you at the
Sheraton for the 2008 Convention!

Comics and Pop Art

Dragon*Con has expanded the Comics track for
2008 (now relabeled the Comics and Pop Art
track), infusing designer toys, character design and
illustration art into the already vibrant mix of guests
taking part in this track each year.
In addition to an eclectic roster of programming and
talent—including the Nexus creative team of Steve
Rude and Mike Baron, Playboy cartoonist Dean
Yeagle, character designer extraordinaire Shane
Glines of Batman Beyond, Samurai Jack and Kim
Possible, illustrators/toy designers Brandt Peters and 2007 Comics Artists Alley
Kathie Olivas, horror art icons Bernie Wrightson and
Basil Gogos, Retro Art Master Derek Yaniger, The Goon creator Eric Powell,
and painter Joe Jusko (to name but a few)—Comics and Pop Art will feature:
VV a Dragon*Con exclusive toy release from MINDstyle’s
“Scavengers” line of vinyl figures, designed by guest Kathie
Olivas and strictly limited to only 200 pieces,
VV a Lowbrow and Pop Art reception at the Garden Courtyard
pool of the Atlanta Sheraton, presented in conjunction with our
friend Chris Warner of the Alcove Contemporary Art Gallery
(www.alcovearts.com) Friday evening—celebrating this exciting
new direction with art on display, live music, custom toys and
much more,
VV a special appearance by Kid Robot’s divine Toy Baroness,
VV a live comics art jam taking place Saturday evening,
VV a cross-pollination of panels, programming and events with
many other Dragon*Con tracks,
VV and a few soon-to-be-announced surprises that will no doubt
Superman Costume leave fans of these mediums salivating for Labor Day weekend
to arrive.
We invite you to join us for what will surely be a spectacular inaugural
celebration of the newly-christened Comics and Pop Art track at Dragon*Con!

Costuming
This year we are focusing on form as well as function as we bring you a variety
of panels and guests that will hopefully give you new directions
as you create your own costumes for fun and profit. This year we
celebrate the art of “hands-on” panels. We are bringing you some of
our regular panelists as well as some new things that include: Vacu-
forming for props and armor, body painting, armor creation as well
as a armor-making contest, dental prosthetics with vacu-form, wings
and things, and even a panel that will demonstrate techniques for
sculpting make-up prosthetics.
In addition, we are bringing back “The Dragon*Con Costuming
Contest”; the only place where we award based on style and
technique…not just presentation. And where would we be without
our rapidly growing “Dragon-After-Dark” contest on Saturday that
spotlights the slightly macabre and mature-themed costumes. See 2007 Costuming Contestant
you all in September.

Dark Fantasy (Goth/Horror/Paranormal Romance)

Horror, Romance, and Gothic Entertainment intersect at the new Dark Fantasy
track-Dragon*Con’s new home for all things dark, sinister, and seductive. From
authors and metaphysicians to musicians and DJ’s, this track is sure to offer
something for attendees with a love of “the dark side.”
The Dark Fantasy track will be spread out over two
rooms this year. One room will feature horror, and
the other room will spotlight paranormal romance
early in the day and gothic culture later in the
afternoon. Among the topics to be discussed are
vampires (of course), urban fantasy, Dark Shadows,
steampunk, Weird Tales magazine, fallen angel
lore, eroticism in supernatural fiction, the Cthulhu
mythos, horror gaming, Robert E. Howard, and the
depiction of goth culture in the mainstream.

Electronic Frontiers Forum

Worried about freedom of speech, privacy, and your rights on line? So are we!
Now in its tenth year, Electronic Frontiers Forums covers your rights on the
Internet and the latest trends in online media. Topics include online privacy,
security, freedom of expression, intellectual property, online activism, social
networking, online publishing, and multi-player gaming. This year we plan
to cover national security letters, electronic voting machines, where the
presidential candidates stand on technology issues, legal issues in Second
Life, Web 2.0, and IT employees vs. contractors in the post-Vizcaino era.
Returning favorite panels will include Hacking 101, 201, and 301, Web
Comics, and Self Publishing.

Filk
Filk Singing began life as a typographic error of “Folk Singing” in a
convention program book back in the early 1960’s. Instead of correcting the
mistake, a new form of music called “filk” was created.
Filk songs come in two varieties-parodies of popular songs with an SF
theme (or fantasy or horror, etc.) and original music with the same themes.
Join us each evening for the usual hilarity and throat-drying festivities
(“where the heck can we get some water!?”)

2007 Live Performance

Gaming Programming
Interested in Gaming at Dragon*Con but don’t know where to start? Then
Gaming Programming is for you. Our panels introduce you to the various
gaming options at the convention and include explanation and exploration
of LARPS, RPGA gaming, non-MMO computer gaming as well as allowing
game manufacturers and developers a chance to let you know what is coming
in the next year. Topics of general interest to the gaming community such as
the impact of gender or violence in gaming are also
discussed.

Independent Film Track

The Independent Film Track is the place to be for
filmmakers and film-lovers, with a combination
of feature screenings, filmmaker panels, and
Independent Short Films!
For the film-lover, we’ll have a full slate of the
very best short films on the fest circuit: twisted
animation, spine-chilling horror, cutting edge fantasy,
challenging science fiction, fast paced action, and all Stacks of Gaming Boxes
kinds of comedy are just a start. Hours of great films,
often with the filmmakers in attendance for Q & As. Awards will be presented
on Monday—you won’t want to miss it.
For filmmakers, we’ll have speakers with insights you need. In the past
few years this has included directors and producers discussing their work,
make-up and FX artists describing the tricks of the trade, festival directors
explaining how to get your film before the public, storyboard artists
expounding on how to save time and effort, and lawyers spelling out
what you absolutely need to know. It’s like a year of film school in
four days.
And let’s not forget our features. We show only a limited number, so
each is something really special. Just in the last few years, attendees
have be treated to the best in indie horror with the apocalyptic The
Signal and the satiric Blood Car, the best in fantasy with Pirates
of the Great Salt Lake, and the Sun Dance favorite, Forgiving The
Franklins.
From early in the morning to well past midnight, it’s non-stop cinema.
To learn more about what is going to happen this year keep watching
Undead Prop in Dealers Room

Space
So what do you think of when you hear “Dragon*Con Space Track”? A few
NASA nerds? Someone talking about some stars? Past Moon
missions? Well, you will get all of that but there is SO much more!!
To US, Dragon*Con Space Track is: Planetary Probes. Alternative
Histories of Space Exploration. The Next 50 Years in Space-
Space Colonies? Once and Future Space Telescopes. 96% of the

Science
Mad scientists have a bad rap these days. We are stereotyped as being arrogant,
callous and kind of creepy, all of which is true, but we’re also accused of being
boring. As if! The guests and speakers of the Dragon*Con 2008 Science Track
are the folks who put the science in science fiction, baby! Since the word
‘science’ covers some pretty diverse subject matter,
we’ve put together a veritable plethora of intellectual
treats for giant throbbing brains everywhere.
If after all of that you still insist upon the stereotype,
well, there’s always the Evil Geniuses for a Better
Tomorrow Annual Recruitment Drive and Bake Sale.
So why not grab a body, yours or someone else’s,
living or dead drag it on down to our neck of the
woods and donate it to Science for a few hours. We
promise—we’ll take really good care of it. In fact,
we can proudly state that NONE of our attendees or
2007 Musical Tesla Coils guests have been maimed, blown up or otherwise
killed a lot as a result of attending Science Track
events, as far as we know.

Star Gate: Offworld Fandom

The Star Gate Offworld Fandom track (SGOWF) welcomes you to another year
of planned and unexpected treats for all stargate fans!
Last year, with the incredibly fan-friendly Paul McGillion as our host, we
held a spontaneous charity auction and in just 20 minutes, rose over $2,500
for the American Diabetes Association! This year, we are planning a full
hour charity auction—and yes, in a larger space!
The SGOWF fan community continues to expand and welcomes your
participation in making this year of fan events the best ever! We need you to
help “Open the Iris”!
We have again reserved a block of hotel rooms! You can learn more by visiting

LIVE PERFORMANCES
Abney Park
Abney Park is a Black Sheep of the Black Clad crowd.
Evocative of both old-world mystery and futuristic technology, Abney
Park is a strong and original musical presence in a genre far too used to
formula. With music and lyrics both dark and mystical, Abney Park creates
an emotional and cerebral world unlike anything found in the Gothic genre
today. Ghost stories and nightmares, myths and magic float in and out of a
music that bounces between industrial dance and symphonic epics from the
Abney Park
dark western forests to the desserts of the Far East.

Atlanta Radio Theatre Company

ARTC first show: The Doom of the Mummy, by William Alan Ritch.
Buried under the sands of Egypt for more than two millennia; forgotten in
the basement of a New England college for more than a hundred years; the
sarcophagus of Imshahnab resides in Memphis, Tennessee today! What power
does it have over graduate student, Cyrus Jones? What mystery does it possess
that the eminent archeologist, Dr. Alastair, wants for himself? And why is math
major, Iris Poole drawn, into its secret ritual?
Imshahnab shall live again in Memphis.
Second Show: Not a Typo!
The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company is pleased to bring a second production to
the Dragon*Con stage after a two-year stint of single productions. That’s right,
this is Not a Typo, and the show you didn’t expect to see (or hear!) but is finally
back. This year we bring you a tale of suspense (what can it be?), romance
(you’ll love it!), and mystery (no, we’re not telling you what it is yet). Surprises
are always fun at Dragon*Con!

Dragon*Con Cabaret
Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome to the new Dragon*Con Cabaret.
Come see the elaborate costumes and fun, eye-winking humor and class
reminiscent of the late 1800’s through the mid 1940’s in this vintage type
show. Big City Burlesque and Vaudeville will headline. There are also some
spots open for selected out of town performers. Contact Audrey at
stormyknight42@gmail.com for more information and to apply.
Big City Burlesque and Vaudeville Review
BCB&V is Atlanta’s original, all retro troupe since 2002. This unique
concept is the brainchild of creator and artistic director Kenton
McGhee, aka ‘King Rouge’, and has been painstakingly developed in
both style and content. This dream to reality has been to recapture
the sultry glamour and smoky magic of by-gone eras. From a
seductive fan dancer of the late 30’s to film noir femme fatales of
the 40’s, a bewitching belly dancer as well as comic heroines of all
yesteryear, BCB&V was the first to bring this concept of Old World
Big City Burlesque Vaudeville to the stage in Atlanta and today remains Atlanta’s
premier Burlesque and Vaudeville troupe.

40 Dragon*Con Progress Report V August 29-September 1, 2008

Cemetery Surfers
Formed by a group of parapsychologists and ghost hunters, the Cemetery
Surfers spend as much time in haunted locations as they do onstage.
With an elaborate stage show (with everything from a zombie attack
to one of the musicians frying in an electric chair during the guitar
solo) they are becoming one of the most popular acts onstage.
But every night after they play, look for them in graveyards or
haunted houses. “We’re musicians and ghost hunters ... If we had a
talking dog, we’d be a cartoon.”

Crossed Swords
Nicole Harsch and Mike Sakuta are the Crossed Swords. For over
20 years, their Crossed Swords Stage Combat Shows have been seen
Cemetery Surfers
across the continental U.S. and Canada at renaissance festivals and
science fiction conventions and, of course, previous Dragon*Cons. Recently,
they’ve been hired to swordfight in such interesting locations as Honolulu,
Hawaii; Blackpool, England; Paris, France; Berlin, Germany; and Moscow, Russia.
The duo can also be seen in a TBS documentary on Pirates, in an A&E episode
of The Unexplained, on the Larry Elmore cover paintings for two Dragonlance
books (The Reign of Istar and The Cataclysm), and on the “Cure Light Wounds”
card in the Spellfire game.
Be sure to check out their www.crossedswords.biz
website for updates and scheduling info.

Crüxshadows
From humble origins in a Northern Florida town, the
Crüxshadows have risen to become internationally
recognized as one of the most popular darkwave
bands of all time. Over the past decade, the
Crüxshadows tumultuous success among the Gothic,
EBM, new wave, and dark electronic genres has
Crossed Swords
earned them a massive and devoted following. With a
constant and ambitious release schedule (as well as a dizzying live engagement
schedule), the Crüxshadows have turned conventional wisdom on its ear and
maintained their status amongst the elite bands from the world of modern
alternative music.
With a blend of new wave, Gothic, and electronica, the Crüxshadows
unique, catchy songs have subsequently become staples of the darkwave,
EBM, and electro-alternative scene.
With over 11 CDs, a DVD, and more compilation appearances than you
can count, the Crüxshadows have made themselves synonymous with a
new breed of explosive electro-goth music. The Crüxshadows energy and
intensity onstage led them to be called “the best live band in Europe today”
by the host of Hamburg’s popular Crazy Clip Show, and their performances
have been aired regularly on German national television. If you have an
opportunity to see them live, you should not pass it up. Over their lengthy
history, the Crüxshadows have shared stages with a wide array of bands,
including notables such as The Cure, Bjork, Ladytron, Apoptygma Berzerk,
Placebo, the Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, VNV Nation, Mesh, Bad Crüxshadows
Religion, Clan of Xymox, Project Pitchfork, and many, many more.

Emerald Rose
Emerald Rose from Georgia combines Celtic, world-beat, and rock
sensibilities with original songwriting, creating a unique fusion sound that
crosses many styles. Guitars, mandola, pennywhistle, bodhran, drums, and
bass drive the music, while harmony vocals bring across intelligent lyrics
that range from ancient myth to modern thought. The band has been around
since 1997, producing five commercial CDs and performing live across the
USA and in Ireland. Their appearances at numerous sci-fi/fantasy conventions
have given them a reputation as a “band of fandom.” Emerald Rose has been
a part of the Dragon*Con “culture” for the last five years, with rollicking
performances on the Concourse, ballrooms, and event parties ranging from
Emerald Rose the Tolkien-theme “Evening at Bree” to the Pern Weyr gatherings. Their
shows combine humor, musicianship, and sheer rock-down Celtic energy!

Lips Down on Dixie

Lips Down On Dixie began in June of 2000 as an unnamed Rocky Horror
Picture Show performance group, housed in Cobb County’s Merchant’s Walk
cinema and containing several cast members with a decade or more of Rocky
cast experience. Not a month later, group member
Tom Ward christened the group “Lips Down on
Dixie” as a reference to the group’s Southeastern
location and to the movie’s first scene: a pair of giant
red lips mouthing the opening song. LDOD’s website
is located at www.ldod.org.

Mighty Rassilon Art Players

For over 20 years The Mighty Rassilon Art Players
have shown audiences their own unique view of many
TV series and movies popular with SF fans.
Lips Down on Dixie
A few years ago, someone told them that they couldn’t
perform a musical, so they created Bats: the Musical an all-singing parody of
the Batman movies and TV shows, just to prove that person right! This year
Dragon*Con will be subjected to MRAP’s returns to its roots and presents its
first Doctor Who play since—since a long time! From TARDIS with Love has
one Doctor, two Masters, three different eras, four companions, and a whole lot
of snogging.

Voltaire
Voltaire is often described as a modern day renaissance man. He is a
singer/performer, creator of comic books, animation and toys.
As a musician, he is a songwriter whose music can best be described
as a collection of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the
macabre, with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star
Wars to keep a Con audience rolling in the aisles. Many know him
for his song “Brains!” from the Cartoon Network show The Grim
Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Voltaire’s live shows, whether solo or
with his skeletal orchestra, are highly theatrical-full of stories and
Voltaire games. The theatrical quality of his performances is not surprising.
For more information on Voltaire’s music, comics, animation and
toys visit www.voltaire.net.

Cosplay Contest
Short for “costume play”, Cosplay is a subculture centered on
dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video
games, Japanese pop music bands, and Visual Kei. Dragon*Con
loves cosplay! And to prove it, we’re putting together another
fantastic Cosplay Contest!
Details, contest rules, host, and timeslot information will be posted

Dawn Look-Alike Contest
Grand Prize: $1,000 Prize
Joseph Michael Linsner’s Dawn is one of the hottest characters
in comics, so in 1998 we hosted the first-ever Dawn Look-Alike
Contest, with a $1,000 cash First Prize. If you’re a fan of beautiful
women, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. The contest is fully
authorized by Joseph (who’ll be on hand for the contest), and Dawn’s
publisher, Sirius Comics.
Great news for contestants: though Dawn is usually depicted with red
hair, she has occasionally appeared on various covers as everything
from blonde to brunette! Contestants will be judged based on how
well they capture the image and spirit of Dawn—confident yet
mysterious, and sexy without being sexist.
2007 Dawn Contestant
Dragon*Con after Dark
Our rapidly growing Dragon After Dark contest on Saturday spotlights macabre
and mature-themed costumes. We see them in the hallways and at the bar, but
this provides a chance to display them in a venue that does not compete with
the noise or interruptions of the typical social setting! Once they are finalized,
contest rules and entry forms will be available at www.dragoncon.org, so check
back soon if you want to participate!

Hallway Costume Contest

Contest staff will be roaming the halls of all venues
with digital cameras, taking pictures of those folks
who are too shy to get up on stage in the Masquerade,
but who have great costumes. We will also take
pictures at the Contest Registration table in front
of the Centennial Ballroom in the Hyatt. You may
purchase a copy of your official entry picture for
$10–with the proceeds going to the Dragon*Con
charity of the year.
2006 Hallway Contestant
All con-goers (including children) will have the
opportunity to vote for their favorite! This is the only event decided by
POPULAR vote at the con. Winners will be announced at the Masquerade.

Masquerade Costume Contest

In the grand tradition of convention costuming, dating back nearly five
decades in SF fandom, Dragon*Con is proud to present the largest Masquerade
Costume Contest in the Southeast and one of the largest in the world!
The Dragon*Con 2008 Masquerade Costume Contest will be held in
the Hyatt Centennial Ballroom. Registration for the Masquerade will be
available during the con at the Contest Registration Desk located outside the
Centennial Ballroom in the Hyatt. We’ll be open Friday and Saturday from

CONVENTION EVENTS
7th Annual Dragon*Con Parade
You know Dragon*Con is in full swing when downtown Atlanta is
officially invaded by aliens, princesses, wizards, and warriors! Each
year on Saturday morning, we march along Peachtree Street in
downtown Atlanta wearing costumes that represent the wide variety
of interests found at Dragon*Con. In 2007, almost 2000 costumed
parade participants and over forty-five themed vehicles delighted
and entertained thousands of onlookers. Our 7th annual parade
looks to be even bigger!
To find out more, contact us at dc_parade@yahoo.com or join our
Yahoo group at groups.yahoo.com/group/dc_parade. The parade is
the largest Dragon*Con event! Come on out and support the fun-
participants and onlookers welcome! Fans at the 2007 Parade

Art Show & Print Shop

At the convention we will have over 150 artists and 5,000 pieces of original
art and prints. Our Show includes the Artist Bazaar (where you will find 50+
attending Artists who will be selling and may even personalize many art items
for you), the Art Gallery (where we have both 2D and 3D original artwork
priced for all budgets), the Art-on-Demand section
(which allows you to have art the way you want it),
the Doll section (which has unique, one of a kind
dolls), and the Print Shop (where we have prints
priced for all budgets).
We are planning many exciting events for the 2008
Dragon*Con Art Show including the annual Iron
Artist competition, a large canvas on which all the
attending Artists can draw or paint (which will be
sold at the Art Show voice auction), live music,
demonstrations, and other wonderful events. We will
be hosting our annual Artists’ Reception on Friday
2007 Artshow & Print Shop night of the convention. Art Show panel discussions
and demonstrations are located just outside the Print
Shop exit in Hannover F and G. There will also be booths for local colleges
with Art programs, and don’t miss the incredible Western Ghost Town themed
Diorama located in the center of the Art Show.

Autograph Sessions
Each year, Dragon*Con assembles many of its willing guests for scheduled
autographs (signings) in one area. Not every guest is willing - or able - to
sign items, but we do inquire as to each guest’s willingness to do so.
Some guests-usually screen stars-charge for autographs, but autographs
staged in our Autograph Area are always free. Limitations on number
and type of items may be made, generally at the request of the signer, and
sometimes due to time considerations.
Autographs will be handled on a first-come, first-signed basis. We will
promote equal access for handicapped persons but this does not exclude
them from the first-come, first-served rule; as with other convention
Marc Singer at WoF 2007
attendees they will get their autograph in order of their arrival.

Blood Drive
2008 marks the 6th year of the “Pay It Forward” Blood Drive at
Dragon*Con, sponsored by The Heinlein Society and LifeSouth Community
Blood Center. In 2006, 269 donors came by the drive to give the gift of life,
and 211 pints of blood were collected. Since 2003, Dragon*Con attendees
have donated 732 pints of blood, potentially saving over 2,000 lives.
The success of this drive is a reflection of the wonderful generosity of the
Dragon*Con community and a fitting tribute to the man who gave so much
of himself to his sci-fi family.

22nd Independent Film Festival

Dragon*Con is America’s largest annual multi-media popular arts convention
which crosses over into science fiction and fantasy, gaming, and comics, with
broad ranges which extend from books, art, and film
to computer animation, special effects, and music. We
focus each year on showcasing the finest independent
short films of the fantastic!
The Dragon*Con Independent Film Festival is a
four day event of film screenings and panels, with
directors, producers, writers, actors, SFX & makeup
artists all sharing their expertise. The Festival
competition is for short films (under 60 minutes).
A few independent features will be shown (out of
competition) in the evenings.
Films will be judged in specific categories, which will
Special Effects Make-Up
be determined by the festival director, based on the
genres of the submissions. For example, in 2007, awards were presented in the
following areas: Animation, Gothic Horror, Extreme Horror, Horror Comedy,
General Comedy, Documentary, Fantasy, Magic Realism, Science Fiction, and
Spoof.

Late-Night Entertainment
We’ll again offer late-night DJ’d dances Friday, Saturday and Sunday
evenings, beginning after the last concert’s over in the ballroom and lasting
until dawn, so you vampires can dance until the sun comes up!
Traditional SF convention filk-singing will take place on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday evenings, late-night. Filking will begin at midnight and will also
continue to the light of day.
For the last few years, we’ve also had an impromptu drum-circle form up
for several hours. In 2000 the drum-circle was made a formal part of the
schedule for Friday through Sunday night. This tradition will continue in
2008, so bring your doumbek or djembe (or your congas or your violin or 2007 Live Performance
your flute...) if you’ve got one.

50 Dragon*Con Progress Report V August 29-September 1, 2008

Writer’s Workshop
This course, taught by best selling SF writer A.C. Crispin, will provide a full
overview of the science fiction and fantasy genre. At completion,
students will understand the importance of background genre
reading, scientific or other appropriate research, developing fleshed-
out characters, original or “twist” plotlines, setting, and descriptions
in their science fiction or fantasy short stories or novels. Students will
learn sources they can consult to find legitimate, suitable markets
for short story or novel submissions. They’ll be able to produce a
correctly formatted and printed manuscript, and a workable query
or cover letter. They’ll be able to identify and avoid the writing scams
that are proliferating in today’s highly competitive markets.
This course will run for two full days at Dragon*Con, on Thursday
(one day before the con “officially” begins) and Friday, August 28-
29, 2008. Submission of a manuscript for review by Ms. Crispin is Ann C. Crispin
desirable, but not required.

of our Fan Tables. These Fan Tables are available for fan groups, conventions,

conventions, fan clubs, and other organizations can be placed here.
We should have several tables available.
The Hilton Concourse Area
Due to upcoming renovations at the Hilton, we will not be
scheduling any fan-tables at the Hilton in 2008.

Hospitality Suite/ConSuite
2007 Concourses
“Consuites” are a tradition of SF and fantasy conventions
throughout the United States. We’ll provide a lounge stocked with all sorts
of complimentary soft drinks, coffee, and munchies for all attendees to enjoy
when feeling a bit hungry. We have planned a Consuite with plenty of snacks
that will be open twenty-four hours a day throughout the convention (with a
few breaks for cleaning purposes).

Information Desk
The Information Desk is your one-stop center for getting all your questions
answered. We will have an information booth located in each of the three host
hotels. Their exact location will be available on the mini maps provided in
the Pocket Program at the show. The staff will be able to help you find where
everything is located and just about any other question or request you may
have. And if they don’t know the answer, they’ll send you directly to the person
who does or contact them by radio.

2008 TOURNAMENT GAMING
Introduction
For the 2008 convention, gaming returns to the Atlanta Hilton. Full details
with maps will be available in the pocket program detailing where each
section of gaming will reside.
The Way Things Work: How to Survive the Gaming Experience at Dragon*Con
Here are a few words that will hopefully give the prospective gamer a
useful overview of how gaming is run at Dragon*Con. It should prove to
answer some of the obvious questions and help both the new and veteran
2007 Gaming convention gamer as you plan your adventure with us.
Please check our website, www.dragoncon.org, and select the Gaming link for
information about pre-registration. The event tickets you buy via the website
will be available at Gaming Registration which will be open Thursday evening
and at 8:00 AM every morning of the convention.
In order to play in most events you will need an event ticket. Most event tickets
cost $3.00, but there are some free demonstration games and a few are more
expensive. You can also purchase generic tickets that are usable at any event. If
an event is sold out you can show up for that event with a generic ticket and if
anyone with a “real” ticket for that event does not show up you will be able to
step in. This is particularly true for the larger events where there is more of a
chance of a no show or cancellation.
People often ask why Dragon*Con charges for tickets, and there are two major
reasons. The first is to fund prizes for the events. We award “Dealer Coins” to
the winners of events that can be used as money in the Exhibition Hall in the
Marriott. For some of the major events we have plaques and awards made.
The second reason is to insure attendance of events. We’ve learned that players
are much more likely to show up for a game if they’ve already spent $3.00
on a ticket. When we tried not charging for events and signed up players on
registration sheets in the past. However, many players signed up for everything
they were remotely interested in and then only played the events they were
most interested when the time came. This was unfair to fellow gamers and
judges who would never know if all the names on a given registration sheet
would show up.
Dragon*Con uses four hour sessions in an effort to maximize the number of
games each player can experience during the convention. The four-day period
is divided into 14 gaming sessions as follows:

Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Time

Session 1 Session 5 Session 9 Session 13 9:00 AM–1:00 PM
Session 2 Session 6 Session 10 Session 14 1:00 PM–5:00 PM
Session 3 Session 7 Session 11 6:00 PM–10:00 PM
Session 4 Session 8 Session 12 10:00 PM–2:00 AM

Ideally tournament judges will manage their time so that each game is finished
with fifteen minutes left in the session allowing everyone time to get to the
next game. Large tournaments in some of the gaming areas do not follow this
patter, and some games run over one and a half or two sessions which is usually
noted in the description area for that event. When you are looking at events
in the listings, you will see that events are typically referred to by their session
numbers and not the day or time.

Board Games
We will be offering our $5 play all con badge. You can participate in most of the
events in the board gaming area for just a single purchase.

at home to play, bring it to open gaming and you are sure to find fun
and challenging opposition.
Settler’s of Catan
The Catan tournament at Dragon has grown into a whole con affair.
Can you take home the coveted Dragon*Con Plaque?
And Many More!
Board Gaming
New games are being added all the time. Please check the gaming
website for schedule updates. I look forward to seeing you at the show.
Board Gaming FAQ
VV What is Board Gaming? At Dragon*Con board gaming is a
catch all section including traditional box games as well as non-
collectible card games.
VV Does this include games like Monopoly and Clue? Mostly our
focus is on old school wargames and the newer German-style
games, as these tend to be what our fan base wants to play, but
we are open to all types of games providing we can find good,
knowledgeable judges.
VV So these games are complex with lots of rules? Complexity
varies from tactical games like Star Fleet Battles (whose rules
take up a 4” binder and turns take well over a hour each) to
simple card games like Flux (the only rule, “draw one, play one”
and usually lasting no more than fifteen minutes a game)
VV Do I need to know how to play before I can join in the fun?
No, the judges at Dragon*Con are specifically chosen for their
instructional abilities and would be happy to teach you as much
of the rules as you need to play in any of the non-tournament
games we offer. For tournaments, we do recommend a degree
of game knowledge as this allows all participants to have a fun
game experience.
VV Tournaments? So are there prizes? Most of our tournaments
offer prizes ranging from copies of the games to framed
certificates to show off to your friends
VV Sounds fun, where do I sign up? Once the gaming
registration site is up, you will be able to purchase the $5
board gaming ribbon as well as tickets for limited seating
tournaments.
VV I am interested in judging _________ . Contact us at
dragoncon@dragoncon.org listing the game you wish to run
and we will get back in contact with you to discuss.

Live Action Role-Playing Games
Live Action Role-Playing Games (LARPs) at Dragon*Con 2008 builds on last
year’s highly successful convention. We continue our upward trends
this year by responding to the requests of our guests and growing
the diversity of the types of LARP games offered for play.
LARP gaming will be held at the Hilton for Dragon*Con 2008.
Space assignments have not yet been finalized for the LARP division
and as such, the number and types of games run will depend on the
space we have to host those games. So, we are still in the process
of finalizing the games that will be approved for LARP play at
Dragon*Con 2008. We expect to have many of our returning fan-
favorites (Dark ConFrontation, Nightfall’s World of Darkness, The
Camarilla’s Requiem) as well as a host of new LARPs.
As always, space permitting, we expect to have several “display-
2007 Gaming
only” tables for those LARP games that run continually throughout
the year. So, if you want to “live the part” or if you just want to find some
information on what exactly Live-Action gaming is, join the LARP division for
a fun-filled weekend of gaming.
All events and scheduling are tentative until scenario production and staff
scheduling are complete. Dragon*Con reserves the right to modify the
availability and/or times of the games being run. Information on the LARP
games to be run available at press time is presented
below.
Any game-specific questions should be asked directly
to the games listed below. For general information,
please contact the LARP Director, Wayne Melnick at
dragonlarp@comcast.net or LARPS@dragoncon.org.

LARP at Dragon*Con 2008
By the Pricking of My Thumb...Something Wicked
This Way Comes...
2007 Gaming
The west of the newly founded United States (well
new in the grand scheme of the world) is becoming a volatile and highly
disputed place. Everyone is trying to get a foothold in the place, and the
creatures that lurk in the shadows are no exception as always. Whether you
are attempting to bring the order of The Camarilla, keep the free spirit of the
now ravaged and reformed Sabbat alive, protect your territory, gain new
territory for your people, or just find a way to live your life without order
and reason...this quite possibly could be the place to do it...if not for a few
small complications.
The smallest of which being...Lone Wolf, OK. There is something not right
about the folk there. Whispers of alliances and deals made with disregard
to tradition and long upheld beliefs. There are rumors that many there do
not follow any sect and are merely cultists that are obsessed with the various
mythos of the end of the world. It is an odd little town, and stranger still
since the mists seem to have rolled in around it. Disturbing things they are!
Disorienting people and making them see all kinds of weird things. Will you
brave the mists and come to find out what is really going on in Lone Wolf
and why so much of the world’s eye seems focused on one small tiny little 2007 Gaming
mining ghost town practically?

cases! This will be a three night game to run Friday, Saturday and Sunday
nights at Dragon*Con 2008.

Sending out an S.O.S....
Tabletop Gaming
You receive a distress message from a small planet close to the rim, but not
really on it. Something’s not quite shiny here. This here was a thriving mining
planet. Ships should be coming in and out of port all the time on Sterling
Quarry (the main port on the planet, Bailey’s Landing). Well, if folk need help
then you’re just the person to aid them! Even if it might cost them a bit.
But, something is definitely out of sorts and you mean to find out what it is.

I have seen the light....and it burns!
A prophet...she sees things....and they come true.
Rumors spread like a wildfire across the fleet when a 2007 Gaming
young blind woman appears on one of the ships and
claims that the lords of Cobal speak to her in visions and dreams. At first this
seems like t he normal madness aboard a ship that happens when too many
people in stress conditions are packed into a space.
Then...things start to happen. A man claims she cured him of his ailments.
Things she sees begin to come true. She knows things that no one knows
about people. In a matter of weeks a cult forms around this woman
rivaling that of the remaining faith in the lords themselves.
Is she real? Is it a hoax? Perhaps a Cylon ploy? Everyone has
his or her reasons for wanting to meet and speak with “The Prophet
of Cobal”.
What are yours? In a time where life is fragile and man is on the
run, any
hope is a good thing. Right?

The Camarilla at Dragon*Con 2008
The Camarilla is an international organization focusing on Live Action
Role Play (LARP) as well as literary, charity, and social activities.
Recognized as White Wolf ’s official fan club, the Camarilla is
international known for its continuous LARP event that spans
several thousand members, with more than just this single
event—we are committed to member involvement and expanding
member creativity and talents. Many groups host activities to
improve member role-play, storytelling, acting, writing, leadership
skills and more.
We invite anyone of age 18 years or older to join us in trying LARP
in the World of Darkness. Dragon*Con 2008 will feature three
games set in the World of Darkness:
Requiem: Miniatures Gaming

In the World of Darkness, Vampires existed and have a society of their own
hidden from the eyes of humans. They move through the human population
taking what they need and controlling people without them realizing it.
They meet behind close doors and hold beautiful and horrible gatherings.
This weekend such a gathering shall be held—a social gathering where Kindred
of all ages will meet under a rough to discuss the
future of their kind. The Prince of the city has request
the Kindred to gather for an announcement. Rumors
fly through the air of a discovery, while others talk
about the chance of a new Prince being named. Come
see what the future holds in the World of Darkness.
Requiem is a two night game expected to run on
Saturday and Sunday night of Dragon*Con 2008.
Changeling:
Since the first Lost returned from Arcadia, clawing
Tabletop Gaming
and cutting their way through the Thorns, they
have looked for ways to protect themselves from
the Gentry. One of the first and surest methods for doing so was the signing
of protective Contracts with the four Earth seasons which are unknown and
confusing to the Others. This was the first step in fighting back against the
True Fae.
To commemorate that fight, the Summer Court will be hosting a celebration
of the Losts’ return to their world with a grand tournament and ball. There
will be tests of skill both physical and mental with prizes given to the
winners.
Come help us rejoice in our freedom and remember what it takes to keep it.
This game is expected to run during the day on both Saturday and Sunday at
Dragon*Con 2008.
Mortal:
Mortals is a game of move through a world were the Cops are on the mobs
payroll, that the average neighbor hood is a bit more dangerous, and people
don’t just go for long walks at the night because there are things that go
bump in the night. Miniatures Gaming

Come play a game where you are an average person in a World of Darkness.
A place that often times considers you food or a play-thing—where looking

their in the shadows, but because you can feel it.
Mortal is a one night game that is expected to run Friday night at
Dragon*Con 2008.

Dark ConFrontation at Dragon*Con 2008: A Funny Thing Happened on

the Way to the Graveyard
Welcome to Dark ConFrontation, a cabaret of arcane, gothic, high-tech,
new age and fantastic. There is a world out there full of voodoo priests,
Card Gaming androids, super heroes, witches, and aliens and all of them have one thing
in common with you…they love to cut loose at Dragon*Con. This is the
one place that someone won’t blink if they see a werewolf. So if you happen to
be a werewolf this is the best place to come if you need some time away from
your normal “dog-eat-dog” world. But with this many supernatural entities,
covert government agencies, and gentlemen geniuses gathered in one place,
it’s not surprising when it all goes to pieces. Thanks be to Ralph, or Phil, or
the Great Cosmic Yard Rake that there is someone there to stitch it all back
together…you.
-----------------------------------------
This year marks Dark ConFrontation’s 15th
Anniversary at Dragon*Con and we are pleased
to present you with this year’s scenario, A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Graveyard. The
registration fee is $30, but a special Group Discount
of $5 per person will be applied to groups of 3 to
4 and a $10 discount per person will be applied to
groups of 5 or more. More info can be found at:

Lurking Fear Production LARP at Dragon*Con 2008: Echoes of Devil’s Reef

Echoes of Devil’s Reef, is the final Lurking Fear Productions Lovecraftian
horror LARP event and will take place in Atlanta, GA at Dragon*Con 2008.
Initially set in the late Victorian era of 1896, players are passengers aboard the
luxury steam liner, the HMS Prometheus, on a trip beginning in
Liverpool, continuing to Lisbon, and finally docking in Athens.
Game play takes place on the last leg of the journey between Lisbon
and Athens in the Mediterranean Sea. Players may portray a wide
variety of pre-generated characters; everything from upper-class
leisure travelers to poor deck hands, and those characters come
equipped with backgrounds and relationships to other characters
and NPCs. Players may also create their own, unique characters for
this event and LFP staff will work closely with these players to help
tailor their character to the game.
As this is our final event, our “grand farewell” if you will, Echoes of
Devil’s Reef is a little different from previous LFP games. Aside from
2007 Gaming pre-generated Victorian era characters, players may also portray any
character that has already appeared in a prior LFP game, regardless
of that particular character’s historical era or fate. Consumed by a
night gaunt in Horror at Meadow Hill Manor?

60 Dragon*Con Progress Report V August 29-September 1, 2008

You may still play your character from that game. Transformed into a Deep
One in The Song of the Abyss? You can play that character too. Trapped in the
Dreamlands in Gods of Forbidden Light? Well, you get the picture...
-----------------------------------------
Combining an original salon-style rules system, a cohesive,
completely immersive setting, and a distinctive attention to
detail, Lurking Fear Productions staff aims to create a unique
experience for all players. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged
as we are capping available player slots at 45, and we sold out of
available player slots on the first night of the Dragon*Con last
year. Characters are always dispensed on a first come, first served
basis, so make sure you either pre-register via the website at www.
wonderlandclothier.com/echoes.html or get to the LFP booth in the
gaming concourse early in the convention.

Forest of Doors LARP at Dragon*Con 2008: The Hospitality of
Beasts
This story takes place in the tent of one of the former antagonists of the game
who is now an ally of the players. The crux of the game is similar to a murder
mystery game where the players will help deduce what has occurred. In
addition there will be numerous opportunities to explore the culture of what
is primarily and antagonistic portion of the setting. There will be many small
challenges such as riddles and some entertainment
and Forest of Doors is are currently negotiating for
possible music and/or dancing. The structure will be
oriented at giving new/potential players a taste of the
world and campaign setting.
-----------------------------------------
Forest of Doors is one of Atlanta’s newest fantasy
LARP dedicated to providing an entertaining and
innovative experience for all of its players. Regular
games are a full contact “boffer” LARP but this
event will be strictly non-combat for safety purpose.
Tabletop Gaming Players who are new to either LARPing or contact
LARPing are especially encouraged to join our event.
This event will also be an in continuity event during which regular players may
bring their characters and earn experience. Also people playing for the first
time may earn experience to bring back to the ongoing game. Our setting is
unique both for its innovative approach to magic but also because our fantasy
game takes its roots from C.S. Lewis and traditional folklore rather than the
J.R.R. Tolkien basis that other fantasy LARPs have been traditionally based.
The game emphasizes role-playing over combat and our environment is
friendly to new players. Pre-generated characters will be available but you
can also make any sort or character you wish. Costuming is encouraged for
this event but is not required.
Check out our website at www.forestofdoors.com for more information.

Heroes of Rokugan Interactive LARP at Dragon*Con 2008: The Sapphire
Tournament (ST-INT-01)
The Honorable Miya Shikan, the Imperial Herald, has recently prevailed
on Emperor Toturi XII to create a new office of imperial magistrates,
the Sapphire Magistrates, whose duty will be the maintenance of peace
throughout the Empire. The tournament to choose the first of these
Sapphire Magistrates was held in Kyuden Miya during the just-completed
Chrysanthemum Festival.
Contestants from across the Empire will compete with each other in their
knowledge of art, law, and debate, followed by a combat tournament to
demonstrate their martial abilities.
Miniatures Gaming
-----------------------------------------
Heroes of Rokugan is an on-going tabletop role-playing campaign set in AEG’s
Legend of the Five Rings game system. Set 300+ years ahead of the current card
game timeline, HoR allows players to develop their characters throughout the
course of the campaign. Due to mature themes, the campaign is restricted to
players age 18 and over.
Dragon*Con 2008 is proud to host its first officially
sanctioned Heroes of Rokugan Interactive LARP, The
Sapphire Tournament. Character creation guidelines
can be found at www.heroes-of-rokugan.com.

Fluidity LARP at Dragon*Con 2008: Horror on the
Crescent Train
This is a stand alone live action role-playing event
of pulp mystery and horror. Set in September 1928,
players are passengers aboard the train traveling from
New Orleans to Atlanta on its way to Savannah. Game Card Gaming
play takes place on the first leg of the journey between
New Orleans and Atlanta. Players may portray a wide variety of pre-generated
characters; everything from upper-class leisure travelers to train porters,
and characters come equipped with backgrounds and relationships to other
characters and NPCs. There is a very peculiar guest aboard, one that does not
seem quite right at all. It is up to the players to solve the mystery before time
runs out for them all.

Legynds LARP at Dragon*Con at Dragon*Con 2008

At press time, full details were unavailable, but Legynds, one of
Georgia’s premier LARPs, will be running a “non-boffer” event
especially written for Dragon*Con 2008. Although the precise day
this game will run is currently being determined, the game will run
all day and culminate in the pub at the end of the day. This event
is meant to be a way to introduce potential players to the world of
Legynds and create the interactions for the new players to merge
with the current players.

and new things to try, so be sure to check the Dragon*Con web page
for the latest offerings and news!

Online Gaming

track. The Online Gaming panels and parties will be held at the
Sheraton this year. Miniatures Gaming

Role-Playing, Campaign Gaming

Campaign Gaming at Dragon*Con 2008 will
continue with the bonanza of offerings started
last year, and adding to that in order to provide
something for everyone. This year, Campaign
Gaming will be offering as many as nine campaigns,
ranging from standard D&D to d20 modern/future
to non-d20 based systems.
Living Greyhawk, the largest shared world campaign
in the world, will be making its final appearance at
Miniatures Gaming this year’s Dragon*Con, as the campaign will be sun
setting at the end of this year. As such, we will be offering all of the current Year
8 Gran March regional events.
Living Arcanis will continue the tradition of offering Paradigm Concepts vastly
popular d20 based fantasy role-playing campaign.
Witch Hunter: Dark Providence will make its second appearance at
Dragon*Con, after a very successful debut last year. Witch Hunter: Dark
Providence is based on the latest Paradigm Concepts campaign system, set in
a gothic horror version of 1600’s Earth.
Fellowship of the White Star will also be making a second appearance at
Dragon*Con. This campaign is set in 1910’s Earth, with a similar gothic feel,
based on a variation of the d20 game system.
Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor will include the purview of Campaign Gaming.
We are expecting an even bigger and better offering from DAB than in
year’s past, and that’s saying a lot. As usual, we will have a premiere event or
two, along with an extensive list of previously released events with a judge
staff able to run any and all the events as necessary to accommodate each

and every player.

Legend of the Shining Jewel will be making a return appearance this year,
and the campaign staff is hoping to build on a very good reception last
year. Based on the d20 rules and set in a world of their own creation, LSJ is
growing in popularity around the country.
We also have two campaigns making their premiere at this year’s
Dragon*Con. The first is Heroes of Rokugan, based on the incredibly
popular Legend of the Five Rings game system by AEG. We will have two
premiere events as well as an additional event or two to offer. The other
event is Star Legends, and is based on the d20 game system and set in the
26th century space.
All of this adds up to the largest variety of events that Campaign Gaming
Role Play Gaming has ever been able to offer. We are very excited about all of the returning
staple campaign events, as well as the new offerings that we have every
expectation will become yearly staples in the future.

Roleplaying
Dragon*Con will be offering a wide selection of
Role Playing Games from a variety of game systems
including new systems run by their developers. A
sample of systems we have so far: Stargate, D20
modern, Savage Worlds, Serenity, World of Warcraft,
and D&D.
The Cheese Grinder returns! This year they are
shaking things up, changing the format, and bringing
a new challenge for the players, Team Cheese!
