1. PURPOSE OF TESTS
The DC distribution board is intended to distribute the DC power supplied by the battery and
the battery-charger assembly of a system.
The DC voltage is generally used to energize the followings:
Supervisory control
Inverters
DC motors
Contactor and circuit breaker coils
Emergency lighting
Indicators, alarms
These tests are intended to check the board and its constituent parts for correct operation.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENT
Single line diagram n0:
Schematic diagram / Equipment drawing n:

3. SCOPE
All working sites

4. TERMINOLOGY
No applicable.

5. EQUIPMENT UNDER TEST

All concerned Low Voltage DC distribution boards.

6. TEST EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

Digital multimeter
Milliohmmeter for continuity measurement
Megohmmeter (500Vdc)
DC test set power supply for injection

7. PRELIMINARY CHECKS
-

Check that all the distribution board constituent parts are fitted and conform to the
applicable drawings (type, ground fault sensor, ratings, voltage monitoring relays,
voltmeters, ammeters, circuit breakers, etc...).
Check the marking of the distribution board components.
Check that it is not possible to come into contact with energized equipment when
working on the system.
Check that it is not possible to come into contact with energized equipment when
working on the system.

Check the main busbar and auxiliary circuits (control, monitoring, alarm, fault) for
continuity.
Check the grounding busbar continuity and connection to the main earthing
system.
Check that the panel hinged doors are connected to the frame by earthing braids.
Check the door locks for correct operation.
Open all the incomers and load circuit breakers.
Check the connections for conformity with the reference drawings and their tightness.

8. ELECTRICAL CHECK
8.1. TESTING CONTINUITY BETWEEN ALL METAL PARTS AND GROUND
For performing this test, it is generally recommended to use a milliohmmeter for continuity
measurement.

8.2. DISTRIBUTION BOARD INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTS

It is recommended to perform these tests before connection starting so all isolating devices will be
closed.
If cables are already connected, open the isolating devices before any test. Downstream circuit
will be done with power cables tests.
Disconnect the ground sensing device and the control cables.
Using a 500 V DC megohmmeter, measure the insulation resistance after a one minute
electrification time between :
Positive busbar and negative busbar with ground.
Negative busbar and positive busbar with ground.
Auxiliary circuit and ground.
Reconnect the cables after testing.

8.3. DC DISTRIBUTION CIRCUIT BREAKER TEST AND INSPECTION

The circuit breakers provide the following functions, depending on the equipment:
Supply and protection of DC motors
Supply and protection of inverters
Supply and protection of the DC distribution board
Protection of the power circuits (batteries and battery chargers)
Supply and protection of auxiliary circuits (monitoring, control, alarm, fault)

8.3.1. Conformity Checks

Check the circuit breakers for presence and conformity with the reference drawings (type,
magnetic rating, thermal rating and label).

8.3.2. Mechanical Tests

Check for correct racking in for withdrawal circuit breaker and check :
That it is impossible to rack in a circuit breaker in the closed position.
That it is impossible to close a circuit breaker not correctly racked in.

That it is impossible to rack out a circuit breaker in the closed position.

Check closing and opening / tripping operation at no load by :

Manual actuation

Pressing the test pushbutton if any

8.3.3. Electrical Testing of Circuit Breakers

Magnetic protection provides circuit breaker tripping on short-circuits.
The tripping value shall be adjusted but not checked by applying power.
Thermal protection provides circuit breaker tripping on overloads.
The tripping value shall be adjusted but not checked by applying power.
Check at the terminal blocks of the panel that the circuit breaker position, if any, and alarm
conditions are correct.

8.4. ELECTRICAL TESTING OF DISTRIBUTION BOARD

8.4.1. Measurement and Protection Circuits Tests
8.4.1.1.

Indicators

Using a test set power supply, check the values read on the indicators.
If any associated converters check the indications to the corresponding output terminal block.

8.4.1.2.

Under/Overvoltage Protection

Using a test set power supply, check the relay operation and adjust to the desired rating.
The protection information reports shall be checked up to the distribution board output terminal
block.

8.4.1.3.

Insulation Resistance Tester

Using a test set power supply check the relay setting for given earth leakage current.
The information reports shall be checked up to the distribution board output terminal block.

8.4.2. Energizing
Connect the battery charger and battery supply cables or incoming cables from Main Distribution
board.
Check the presence of the mechanical protectors preventing any accidental contact with live parts.
Open all the outgoing disconnecting devices.
Supply the distribution board via the battery charger or via the Main Distribution board and check
for voltage and correct polarities upstream of all disconnecting devices, indicators and protection.

Check the distribution board alarm information return up to the output terminal blocks.

8.4.3. Automatic Transfer Switches

Check mechanical and / or electrical interlocks.
Check correct polarities.
With the both available supplies confirm the functional checks by presence of voltage, loss of
supply, restoration of supply in manual and in automatic mode.

9. PLACING INTO SERVICE

Insert the battery in the LVDC distribution board by closing the incoming battery circuit breaker
or the second incoming supply from Main Distribution board.
Check that all necessary protective and signaling devices are in services.
Voltage measurement, polarity check and voltmeter reading to be done for each busbar.
Close all outgoing circuit-breaker when necessary after checking of the corresponding low voltage
power cables and polarities.

10. RECORDING OF INSPECTION AND TEST DATA

The results of the checks and measurements made during the field test shall be recorded on the
following test form:
