DuringtheSpring2016semester,IworkedwithKathleenHamel,aninterninGrammarLevel2.Given
thatthiswasonlythesecondsemesterofournewcurriculum,andthiswasmyfirsttimeteachingthiscourse,
Kathleenwasveryflexiblefromthebeginningofthecourse.Webeganthesemesterbypresentingourselvesas
coteachers.Fromthebeginning,Kathleenleadatleastoneactivitynearlyeveryday.Bythethirdweek,
Kathleenwaschoosingand/orcreatingheractivitieswithoutassistancefromthementorteacher.Aftertheweek
5exam,KathleenstartedtransitioningintothemainleadoftheclassroomwithLonibeinganactiveobserver
andleadingonlyafewactivities.Byweek9,Kathleenhadcompletelytakenovertheclassandwasthemain
instructorfortheremainderofthesemester.Attheend,LoniandKathleencotaughtthelastweekofclasses
whichincludedourfinalgrammaticalstructureandreviewsessions.
ThroughoutthesemesterKathleendemonstratedawillingnesstofacechallengesandfindworkarounds
tohelptheclassrunsmoothly.Asaninterninourprogram,sheparticipatedinfacultymeetings,skill/level
meetings,andshetookituponherselftocreatetheweek10assessmentincooperationwithherassessment
courseingraduateschool.Kathleendemonstratedsuperiorwillingnessandabilitytoworkwithinacohort
modelandwasanactiveparticipantincollaborativeefforts.
Asaninstructor,Kathleenshowsdedicationtotheideathatclassshouldbebothinformativeandfun.
Sheregularlyincorporatedtechnologyforthepurposesofreviewandpractice.Gamesandactiveactivitiesare
certainlyherstrongpointinherteachingstyle.Sheisalwayslookingforwaystohelpengagethestudents,
notingthatmanyofthequietstudentsbecomemoreinvolvedwhenabitofcompetitionispresent.Ontheother
hand,formalinstructiondidnotcomeasnaturallytoKathleen.Atthebeginningofherinternship,Kathleen
selfidentifiedafewareasofweaknesswhichsheaskforhelpwithgivingclearinstructionsandexplanationof
thegrammarpointsbeingtwoofthoseareas.Throughguidedobservations,focusedpractice,andample
preparationbeforeclasses,shewasabletoimproveinalloftheareasthatshewantedtoworkon.When
presentedwithcriticalfeedback,Kathleentooktheinformationwitheaseanduseditasagrowingexperience.
ThereweremanytimeswhenIwouldpointoutsomeareaforimprovement,andKathleenwouldincludethatin
herverbalreflectionofthenextlessontaught.Thisselfawarenessandabilitytocriticallyreflectisan
invaluableskillforteacherswhoarecontinuallyseekingtoimprovethemselves.

Asagrammarinstructor,Kathleenshowedincrediblegrowthduringthesemester.Thissemesterwas
particularlychallengingforallinstructorsofLevel2Grammar.Thebookthatwewereusingdidnotinclude
enoughsupportformanyofthestructuresthatwereidentifiedasnecessary.Also,aspreviouslymentioned,all
teacherswereadjustingwithinthenewAEcurriculum.Inaddition,thebookthatwewereusinghadmany
problemswithinthebookitselfincludingBritishEnglishconstructions,whichdontnecessarilyapplyin
AmericanEnglish,andproblematicexerciseswhichdontactuallyelicitthegrammarthattheyareintendedto
practice.Atthebeginningofthesemester,Kathleenseemedabittimidinherwillingnesstoselectanexercise
orthrowoutanexercisebecauseitisnotidealforourpurposes.However,bythemiddleofthesemester,
Kathleenshowedabilitytolookcriticallyatexercisesingrammarbooksandonourshareddrive.Kathleenalso
regularlyadaptedexercisestomakethemfitourclasspurposesbetter.Thisabilitytobecriticalaboutcontentin
ourclassroomshowsKathleensdedicationtoexcellenceininstruction.
Finally,Kathleenfacedachallenginggroupofstudentsthissemester.Theywereaveryvocalgroupof
highlymotivatedcriticalthinkers.Afterthemiddleofthesemester,whenKathleenbecametheprimary
instructor,shecommunicatedregularlywithme,hermentorteacher,tofindthebestwaystomanagethese
challenges.Sheshowedoutstandingprofessionalismwithintheclassroom,andinherdecisiontoseekoutside
assistance.Whilethissituationwasnotidealforaninternship,Kathleencommunicatedanabilitytoviewthisas
opportunitytoutilizethesupportthatshehadanduseitasanopportunityforgrowth.
Overall,IwouldsaythatKathleenperformedverywellinherinternship.Shefacedsomechallengesthis
semester,manyofwhichwereprogrammaticandoutsideofhercontrolhowever,shekeptagoodattitudeand
remainedanactiveparticipantinourprogramandteachercohort.IthinkKathleenhasaverybrightfutureasan
ESLinstructorandprofessionalintheTESOLfield.
