RELATIVE CLAUSES
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
We use the defining relative clauses to give essential information about the noun
(someone or something), information that we need in order to understand what or who is
being referred to.
A defining relative clause usually comes immediately after the noun it describes.
In writing, we dont use commas in defining relative clauses
We use That or Who for people, That or Which for things, When for times, Where for
places, Whose to express possession.
Which, Who and That can be ommited when they refer to an object.
Whose cannot be ommited
If the relative pronoun carries a preposition, this last one follows the verb
Example:
This is a man who takes his responsibilities seriously.

NON- DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

We use the Non-dening clauses to give extra information abou+ the noun.
We use who {or people, which or things, when For times, where For places,
Whose to express possession.
We dont use the relative pronoun That.

We use commas to separate the relative clause From the rest of the senlence.
The relative pronouns canno+ be omitted.
Example:
Frankenstein, which is a horror novel, is about a scientist who creates a monster.
