Lenape district honors

student volunteers

Lenape Regional High School District Cup

Seneca senior Gabriella Magasic one

of four to receive volunteer service award
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
It was a night to give thanks to
those who already give so much of
themselves, when the Lenape Regional High School District used
its May 11 Board of Education
meeting to honor the recipients of
this years student volunteer service awards.
According to LRHSD director
of programs and planning
Matthew Webb, the awards were
first implemented across the district not only to honor senior student volunteers, but also to instill
in all students civic responsibility
and a willingness to service their
communities throughout their
lives.
Webb said the students who received the award demonstrate
commitment and dedication toward volunteerism as well as
leadership that demonstrates others to do the same in their community.
This years recipients were
Cherokee High Schools Katherine Taylor, Lenape High Schools
Victoria Ieradi, Seneca High
Schools Gabriella Magasic and
Shawnee High Schools Jessica
Forelli.

The accomplishments of each

recipient were detailed at the
meeting by that recipients school
principal, and short videos were
also played where the recipients
spoke about their work along
with their teachers.
Much of Taylors volunteer
work has been centered at the
Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where shes spent more
than 500 hours volunteering as a
science presenter.
Taylor said volunteering had
been a central part of her life
from a young age, and she was
happy to think that some of the
children shes spoken to at the
Franklin Institute might someday want to become scientists or
mathematicians.
I think volunteering is important because its a way to give
back and its a way to share our
knowledge with others, Taylor
said. Its a way to spread inspiration.
Sharing knowledge with others
was also a mission for Ieradi, who
in addition to being involved with
food drives and tutoring work,
has spent more than 500 hours
with the Girl Scouts and Boy

Grads: Savor the final days of your high school career

Dan McDonough Jr.

n just a few short weeks, high

school seniors throughout New
Jersey will be wrapping up their
final days of class, taking their final
high school tests and walking onto
their high school field one more time
for graduation.
Its an exciting time in the life of a
young man or young woman. The final
weeks of high school, the graduation
ceremony, the hugs and congratulations following, the celebrations that
will last throughout the summer and
the packing for, the drive to and the arrival at college are memories graduates will remember fondly.
To all the grads out there, while you
may want to rush these last days so
school can be out for summer, and so
high school can be out forever, remember to savor every remaining moment.
This may not mean much to you
right now, but there are experiences
you will have in these final days, these

next few months, that you will never

replicate again. There are people you
will graduate with some friends,
some acquaintances, some whom you
grew up with whom you may never
see again.
There are some whom you are close
with now who you will grow apart
from over the years, and there are
some whom you will grow closer to as
your lives change.
Those wistful days of no responsibility will be behind you. Soon, you
will be on your own. You will have the
freedom to eat pizza for breakfast, stay
up until 4 a.m., take a nap in the middle of the day, go berzerk at a sporting

event wearing your colleges colors

and skip a class if you want to note:
we dont recommend that last one.
The label high school student
came with a lot of restrictions on your
freedom, but it also gave you a get-outof-jail-free card, or cards. Once graduation is over, that label goes away. All
freedoms given to an American adult
will be yours.
But so, too, will all the consequences
of your actions. The decisions you
make from as serious as do I study
for this test? to should I eat another
burrito? will all have results that
will affect your life. Its a lot of responsibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but
it can also be a scary thing, becoming
an adult.
So, while you still have the option,
live life as a kid one last time. Savor
these last days of high school. And be
confident that you will do just fine.
Good luck and congratulations!

LRHSD honors students joining U.S. Armed Forces

District honors 21 seniors from across its four schools for decision to enter armed services,
military academies or college ROTC programs after their graduation in June
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The past and present of the United
States armed forces came together to honor
their future when on May 9 the Lenape Regional High School District held its seventh
annual armed services awards ceremony.
On that night, 21 seniors from across the
districts four schools and their families
gathered as district officials, members of
the community and veterans honored them
for their decision to enter the armed services, military academies or college ROTC

programs after graduation in June.

Superintendent Carol Birnbohm told the
seniors that while the event was an opportunity to celebrate their service and sacrifice, she hoped it could also help create a
support system where veterans might provide valuable insight for the students and
their parents.
Tonights students will have added
pressure of being a part of something
much bigger than they have ever been a
part of before a newfound responsibility
understanding that individual decisions
now impact their unit, their institution

and our country, Birnbohm said. Veterans, Im looking to you to provide insight
for our students on how to best handle that
new responsibility.
Students honored at the event included
Lenape High School seniors Raymond
Backus, Brian Betz, Dillon Gladwell and
Cynthia Martinez; Shawnee High School
seniors Jeffrey Amisano, Charles Howard

Joshua Walton; Cherokee High School seniors Kelsey Adam, Atrayo Croly, Conner

Scouts.
For her Girl Scout Gold Service
Award project, Ieradi helped improve the Pine Tree Educational
and Environmental Center in
Tabernacle by installing educational signs detailing animal and
plants unique to the Pinelands.
I know Im pretty fortunate, I
live in a great town, I have great
parents and a great support system, so I think its only appropriate that people who have things
should help give back to their
community and help out those
who are less fortunate than themselves, Ieradi said.
Spreading the idea of volunteering throughout the community was also a goal in the work of
Magasic, who volunteers at the
Animal Welfare Association in
Voorhees in addition to work

shes done at Virtua Hospital, National Honor Society and preparing food for the homeless.
Volunteering is important because it leaves you with a really
positive feeling about yourself,
Magasic said. You know that
youre helping others but you're
also helping yourself and earning
respect for yourself at the same
time.
Positive feelings were also a
theme in Forellis volunteer work,
much of which has concentrated
on helping with cheerleading
through the Medford Youth Athletic Association.
Forelli has also done volunteer
work through the National Honor
Society and the Shawnee cheer
team, and said she hopes to continue her community service well
into the future.
I would definitely say community service is one of the biggest
activities of my life and not something Id want to give up, Forelli
said.

CANDIDATES
Get to know the candidates in the June 7 Republican primary election for
Tabernacle Township Committee. This week The Sun asked: 1) What are
some new ideas or approaches that you can bring to Township Committee,
and how will they benefit the town? 2) What are your feelings on the
possible creation of a joint emergency services organization?

1.) One of the things that has

become obvious to me over the
years is that the township needs
to do a much better job of supporting our local small business
community. A thriving small
business community helps us all
by generating ratables, services
and jobs. Communication, I believe, is key. An advisory committee comprised of local business owners and township representatives probably would be a
good start.
But there are other steps to be
taken. For example, the Township Committee received a presentation by Shop Burlington
County First, a county initiative that encourages residents to
shop locally. Rather than taking
steps to join the initiative, the
Township dropped the ball. Joining this program has no draw-

backs; it would only

1.) Currently, the Township

Committee is considering options to enhance the Town Hall
complex and community center
(old squad building) to provide
improved facilities for our residents, visitors and our dedicated
employees without any additional tax burden.
These infrastructure modifications, which have long-term

fact, the change actually cost the
township money by advertising
the change. Similarly, the main
reason stated in public session
for creating an investigative subcommittee to look at emergency
services was to try to save
money, yet the report produced
did not address this at all in
fact, our opponents propose
spending additional money on a
new public safety director. If
elected, I will be a much better
steward of township funds.
2.) Both Tabernacle Fire Company No. 1 and the Tabernacle
Rescue Squad perform their jobs
admirably. However, they provide different services, go about
executing their responsibilities
in very different ways, and have
very different operational structures. If the heads of both organi-

zations came together on their

own and proposed a plan for
merger, I think it would have the
potential to work. However, forcing the merger from the top down
which seems to be the thrust of
a written report prepared by the
incumbents we are running
against is not a solution.
Their report suggests the
town create a new Public Safety
Department to be headed up by a
single public safety director.
This usurps the authority of the
leadership in both of these volunteer organizations, by compelling the chiefs to report to
the director; it is a recipe for disaster. This move is tantamount
to saying, We dont trust you,
and thats not a message that
should be sent. Its no wonder
the report has become a source
of controversy.

Township Committee
has thoroughly reviewed
emergency
services. As a result of
the continued work, I
believe this type of organization may be necessary some day, but
definitely not in the
near future.
Tabernacle
Fire

Company, Tabernacle Rescue

Squad, Pinelands CERT and the
OEM coordinator currently provide a very high level of service,
and we are very fortunate to
have these first-responders fulfilling our needs. Any type of
changes, if any, would need to be

have put forth a five-point platform which, we believe, not only
addresses Tabernacles existing
tax and spending issues, but offers some constructive ideas for
improving communication and
transparency with residents, encouraging and assisting local
business, and supporting all volunteer organizations.
At this writing, Tabernacle is
facing the largest increase in its

and will enable us to avoid this
type of unexpected tax spike

pany and rescue squad. Moreover, it is apparent that it has created an unspoken rift between
members of Township Committee. While the service of the
present committee is appreciated, we feel fresh ideas with unbiased perspectives will assist in
beginning to form harmony
where disharmony presently exists.
Our opponents appointed
themselves a two-member subcommittee to investigate emergency services, and finally released a report on their findings,
which is more astonishing for
what it lacks, than for what it
proposes. They purportedly interviewed not just fire and rescue leaders, but also state and
county officials, and former
township officials. They refuse
to provide the names of whom
they spoke with and do not provide any direct input from these
outside experts. Nor did they

include the historical perspective from prior leaders. In addition, the report is not balanced.
The components analyzed for
one department are not analyzed
for the other.
Despite the fact that the township is obviously strapped for
revenue, they recommend the
creation of a public safety department and a public safety coordinator, a paid position for
which no salary amount has
been stated and at a time when
other budget line items are subject to elimination due to fiscal
constraints.
It is no surprise the report has
received backlash from so many
respected individuals in this
wonderful town. The report offers lavish praise for both fire
and rescue, yet proffers to address the issues between them,
instead of addressing what each
unit might see as problems
unique to their situation.

High School seniors Tyler Barton
and Alex Funches.
Birnbohm told the students
they would soon be joining an
elite club that extolls leadership,
and while some may spend their
entire careers in the armed forces
and some may not, they will all
share the common thread of
being prepared for any obstacle.
You will be asked to do things
you were never asked to do before, and you will learn that you
will be able to accomplish much
more than you thought you could
ever accomplish, Birnbohm
said.
Exemplifying that belief was
the evenings keynote speaker,
USMC Maj. Michael Borneo, a
Mt. Laurel native and graduate of
the Lenape High School class of
1996.
Borneo is assigned as a military advisor to the Bureau of East
Asian and Pacific Affairs, Office
of Regional Security and Policy,
and in the past has deployed
aboard ship and ashore eight
times to the Middle East, Korean
Peninsula, Okinawa and mainland Japan, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia, including four combat tours in Iraq and
Afghanistan.

Members of the JROTC program from schools throughout Lenape Regional High School District present colors during the LRHSD Armed
Services Awards Ceremony on May 9.
Borneo said he understood
youth and arrogance could be
powerful when combined, but
hoped the students would make
use of information he wished was
made more explicitly clear to him
at their age.
Borneo said the students would
ultimately find themselves in the
business of taking and saving
lives, and while some would be
closer to the pointy end of the
spear than others, they were all
embarking on a career where bad
decisions can get people killed.
He said those decisions also extend beyond simple combat, as in
his 16 years of service, he had lost
five marines in training accidents, three to suicide, two to
drug overdoses and 12 to off-duty
vehicle accidents.
I dont say this to scare you,
but to encourage you to mentally
prepare yourself for the chal-

lenges that await, Borneo said.

As a leader, people will look to
you to be the quiet in the storm.
Know yourself, and know the resources that are available to
help.
Borneo also stressed accountability to the students, and said he
would be remiss if he did not caution them directly on what he
said were the most common pitfalls and causes of disciplinary issues in alcohol, drugs and sexual
encounters.
While Borneo said no one enters the armed forces expecting
bad things to happen, when they
do happen, there are normally
multiple opportunities beforehand where someone could have
broken the chain of events.
It requires awareness and
moral courage, Borneo said. Instill both of those in yourselves
and in those you lead.
