Conversation strategies: Try to avoid teacher-centeredness. Begin the class with a group chatting casually. Its
worthy, and after all, conversation clubs are intended to put students more at ease with the spoken English. By asking
them how their day has been or what they are planning to do after class, its an approach that often works to warm the
class up for the first few minutes.
Discussion topics: For this lesson, ask them if they have seen the current news, and have a brief chat about the main
stories hitting the headlines either locally or globally. Other optional questions to warm up and follow up the topic can
be: When did it happen? What happened? Where were you when you heard the news? How did you find out?
PLAN YOUR TIMELINE
1. Warm up the class by asking them how their day has been or what they are planning to do after class. (3 to
5 minutes)
2. Ask them if they have seen the current news. Have a brief chat about the main stories or the ones that are
more controversial. Extract from SS their ideas of what they think about particular news. (5 to 10 minutes)
3. Explain the activity and rules. (5 minutes)

Tell them that they are about to prepare a TV news presentation.

For that they would have to make groups of 2 or 3 people.
Then they have to choose news section (entertainment, sports, politics, local, international, weather,

economics, etc.)
Each group has to cover 2 different TV news sections with 3 news at least.
They can have access to the computers to search for some news.
SS are going to present this activity as possible as a real TV news or a real TV reporter; If they can finish

with Name, Location and Its back to the studio or Get back to you Name expression, even better.
It would be given 40 minutes to prepare the presentation.

4. Check on them while they prepare by asking some questions:

What news story have you chosen?

When did it happen?
What happened?
Where were you when you heard the news?
How did you find out?

5. When the groups have prepared their good news stories, they present and act them to the class, if possible
ask them not to stick too much to the paper, otherwise it would become into a reading activity. Remember its
focus on speaking. (25 minutes)
6. Of course, be sure to feed back to them and this may involve them seeing part or the entire presentation, and
put the focus on their speaking. Then SS can vote for the best group. (5 minutes)
