Be able to define, in words, the following:

independent events ( use the definition found in Lesson Outline 7 )

random variable ( refer to page 353 of textbook )
conditional probability ( use the definition found in Lesson Outline 7

Recognize a problem involving conditional probability. Be able to apply formula and solve.
Provided with enough information be able to determine whether two events are dependent or
independent by applying the appropriate formula.
Recognize a problem involving Bayes Rule. Be able to apply the formula for Bayes Rule and
solve.
Recognize a problem involving the general addition rule. Be able to apply the appropriate
formula and solve.
Recognize a problem involving the multiplication rule. Be able to apply the appropriate formula
and solve.

Provided with the necessary information be able to calculate the probability distribution of a
discrete random variable.
Concerning the binomial random variable:
-

Recognize a problem that satisfies the conditions for the application of a binomial
random variable and whether the question the problem is asking can be answered with
a binomial random variable.

Given a problem that satisfies the conditions for the application of a binomial random
variable be able to set up the formulas with the problem-specific values substituted.

When dealing with a finite population, be able to use the 5 percent rule to determine
whether a binomial random variable can still be applied.

Be able to state, in words, what the value of a binomial random variable is telling you.

Concerning the geometric random variable:

-

Recognize a problem that satisfies the conditions for the application of a geometric
random variable and whether the question the problem is asking can be answered with
a geometric random variable.

Given a problem that satisfies the conditions for the application of a geometric random
variable be able to set up the formulas with the problem-specific values substituted.

Be able to state, in words, what the value of a geometric random variable is telling you.

Functions of random variables:

-

Recognize a problem that requires the creation of one or more functions of random
variables.

Be able to set up these functions and use the relationships between the means, variances
and standard deviations of these variables and their functions to solve the problem.

Concerning the normal distribution:

NOTE: The following requires knowing how to use the standard normal table.
-

given an interval of normal distribution values along with the mean and standard
deviation of the distribution be able to find its probability.

Given a

Given the probability of an interval of normal random variable values be able to construct
the interval. This would require identifying one or both endpoints of the interval. The
mean and standard deviation of the normal distribution will be supplied.
