The City of Castlegar is Proud to Celebrate

National Public Works Week, May 15-21, 2016
The City of Castlegars Public Works Department is comprised of 22 outside staff who are supported by three
Managers, an Engineering Technician and an Administrative Assistant. This dynamic group looks after all facets
of the Citys infrastructure. In the summer months, four students are hired to assist in parks maintenance.
ROADS & PARKS
The Roads & Parks crew is
comprised of eleven individuals.
The staff makeup includes a crew
Foreman, a journeyman Carpenter,
two parks-Maintenance people, and
several Heavy and Light Equipment
Operators. In the summer months,
four college students are hired to
assist the parks maintenance men.
ensure that the many pieces of

equipment are always available for
use and when required, are called
upon for emergency field repairs.
The crew is also used for snow
clearing operations when required.
Monitoring of the Citys treatment,

pumping and storage facilities is
aided by the Citys SCADA system
(Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition), and is a system of
sensors that communicate with a
main computer to alert crews if
problems arise no matter the time
of day.
The Roads & Parks crew

responsibility is vast and job duties
are diverse almost every day
holds different challenges. Pot hole
patching, sign installations,
sidewalk repairs, snow plowing,
street sweeping, parks garbage
collection, sports field
maintenance, playground
construction, irrigation, special
events preparations, and some
capital construction jobs name a
few duties that the crew may carry
out in any given day.
WATER & SEWER MAINTENANCE
UTILITIES
During the winter, the Roads &

Parks crew builds and maintains an
outdoor ice rink at Kinnaird Park
which is always popular with the
community.
The Treatment crew for the City

consists of four Operators.
The
Operators are responsible for the
disinfection and quality monitoring
of drinking water and the
treatment of sanitary waste. The
crew works a rotation shift to
ensure operator coverage 7 days a
week.
The Mechanics shop crew isnt

large with two members but the
work put through is extensive and
varied.
The Mechanical Shop crew is
responsible for keeping the City
fleet of vehicles and equipment in

Five operators make up the

Water/Sewer Maintenance crew.
Their task is to maintain all
underground infrastructures for the
distribution of drinking water and
the collection of sanitary waste.
Preventative maintenance such as
water and sewer main flushing,
hydrant maintenance and
infrastructure inspection consumes
much of the maintenance crews
time.
This crew installs new
services in the City and responds to
water leaks and sewer backups.
All the Operators within the

Utilities crew are registered with
the BC Environmental Operators
Certification Program (BC-EOCP).
The BC Safe Water Drinking Act
requires Operators to be certified.

Emergency communications in the RDCK are getting a
big boost from a new system that will notify residents and
visitors about emergency events throughout the region.
The community notification system is a free and easy
program that enables users to receive free text messages
and landline calls notifying them of emergencies occurring in the area for which they have selected alerts for. The
system will also link to pertinent information the public
needs to deal in an emergency event evacuation alerts
and notices, maps, emergency centre locations, etc.

This is an important tool that will assist us in helping
our residents stay safe and informed during emergency
events, advises Andrew Bellerby, Regional Fire Chief

awakens and becomes a vibrant centre
of activity. This will be the 124th consecutive year Kaslo has celebrated the
dawn of summer.

the Show and Shine on Front Street is
an amazing spectacle of unique and
rare cars. The lakeside Vimy Park is

A Pioneers Tale
Julia Griswold Armstrong will tell the story

of her life growing up
in a pioneer lifestyle in
the 1960s in the Kootenays. When most were
seeking modern conveniences, Julias family
centred a life around
self sufficiency by logging and farming with
horses, growing gardens
and making their own
hydro electric power,
among other activities.

show her parents, June
and Harry Griswold childhoods, her father as a hobo riding the rails during the depression and the various other
photos which depict her parents preparation for homestead life. Also included are photos of the pioneer life near
Kaslo.
Julia will share her childhood adventures, challenges
and the joys of a family working together. Experience this

Reduce The Strain On Your Muscles
Being a road user comes with a whole list on inherent

risks fast-moving vehicles, distracted drivers and inattentive pedestrians are only a few of the hazards you may
encounter while in transit. But what about the dangers
you pose to yourself?
For this years National Road Safety Week, May 17 23,
the Canada Safety Council wants to remind Canadians of
the importance of proper ergonomics behind the wheel.
Developing a musculoskeletal or repetitive strain injury
is much easier than it would appear and these can in fact
leave you at a higher risk for car crashes.
According to SAFE Work Manitoba, more than 50% of
on the job injuries to people who drive for a living are
musculoskeletal injuries (MSI). And while a significant
amount of this statistic can be linked to heightened exposure a professional driver will, out of necessity, have
more opportunity to have their posture negatively impact
their health its still an injury risk that can be mitigated
by taking steps to reduce the strain on your body.
A significant factor in injury is when a driver maintains
a posture that causes them to reach forward or forces
them to use awkward motions to control the vehicle.
Additionally, in larger vehicles, the full-body vibration
over a prolonged period of time can heighten the risk
of injury to the lower back and spine. Additionally, prolonged sessions at the wheel can fatigue the back muscles
and weaken them, which makes them more vulnerable to
injury than when they are not fatigued.

Here are some steps you can take to reduce risk of inuring yourself:
Maintain a proper posture while seated, ensuring
that your knees and hips are level and that you can
reach the pedals and instruments without having to
come away from the back of the seat.
Aim to have your seat inclined at between 110-120
degrees, which will reduce the pressure on the discs
in your back.
If your vehicle is equipped with a lumbar support,
adjust it so your back is evenly supported.
The steering wheel should be close enough to you
and low enough that you dont have to strain your
neck and upper back by reaching.
Before removing any heavy items from the trunk or
the back of the truck, give your body a few minutes
to adjust to being out of the vehicle. Perform a few
stretches to limber up.
Where possible, break up your driving. Take small
breaks every two hours or so its better to arrive at
your destination on time and well than to get there
early, but in pain and stiff.
What if you already suffer from a MSI, though?
According to the Canadian Association of Occupational
Therapists, public health research has shown that these
individuals are at a higher risk for car crashes than those
who do not suffer from these injuries. Although more
empirical research needs to be conducted into the field,
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
With the Victoria Day long weekend approaching, the
Canada Safety Council wishes you a pleasant and safe
time. A reminder: if youre going to be driving, be patient,
keep your focus on your driving, wear your seatbelt and
dont drink. The May long weekend has historically been
a time where police crack down on inebriated drivers and
has also been one of the five most significant occasions
for impaired driving incidents. If you plan on drinking,
ensure that you have a designated driver or else take a
taxi. Its not worth getting behind the wheel and causing
injury, or worse, death.

Students from all over the Kootenays took the stage to

compete in the Junior Dragons Den championship held
at the Charles Bailey Theatre on Saturday May 7, as part
of Trails Silver City Days celebration! The event saw the
winners from the East and West Kootenay regional competitions face off for $9000 in cash prizes, in a fast paced,
fully interactive and entertaining live show format.
Competing in three different divisions, Junior (grades
8 10), Senior (grades 11 12) and College/University,
competitors had two minutes to pitch to the judges, following the airing of a short promotional video which had
been produced for the competition, highlighting their
business or business concept. The Championship show
was fantastic, stated Don Freschi, GM at CFDC Greater
Trail. The students were very composed and practiced,
and really managed the pressure of being on stage, in
front of a live audience, exceptionally well, stated Freschi.
The Junior Dragons Den Championship is the crowning achievement for the winners of the three regional
qualifying competitions throughout the East and West
Kootenay, which make up the Junior Dragons Den student business competition series. And the winners were:

Awareness Week
May 16 20 is Local Government Awareness Week
and the Regional District of Central Kootenay, the City
of Nelson, the Villages of Nakusp, Salmo and Slocan and
the Town of Creston are inviting residents to learn more
about the role these local governments play in their communities by hosting a number of free and fun events.
We are excited to partner with some of our member
municipalities to celebrate Local Government Awareness
Week, says Karen Hamling, Chair of the RDCK. We
work together to deliver many important services to residents. We invite the public to come out to meet staff and
elected officials, ask us questions and learn more about
what we do.
Residents are invited to take a quiz about local government in the region for a chance to win a fabulous
prize pack. The quiz will be available at the events being

Pentecost is the birthday of the church and at St. Saviours Anglican Church, 701 Ward Street in Nelson, we are

days after Easter, Christians commemorate the coming of
the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus. This year we celebrate on Wednesday, May 18, 5 7 pm.
Symbols of Pentecost include fire, wind and water which
we are using these in our Messy Church crafts. Come and
make kites, sail boats and enjoy community, fun and food!
Everyone, adults and children are welcome. There is no
charge, although donations are appreciated.
St. Saviours has held a number of Messy Church events
and they are always great fun. Join us and see for yourself!
So what is Messy Church? The movement began in
England in 2004 and now has spread worldwide. Messy
Church is a form of church for children and adults that
involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. Its for
church people and for people who dont already belong to
another form of church. It meets at a time that suits people
who dont already belong to church. It typically includes
a welcome, a creative time to explore the biblical theme
through getting messy; a short celebration time involving
prayer, song and perhaps a Eucharist and a sit-down meal
together at tables. All elements are for and should include,
people of all ages, adults and children.
