Reflection on my Listening and Speaking lesson on the 8th April 2014

For my listening and speaking lesson, overall it went well but there were still a
little bit of flaws which can be improved for future uses later. The lesson was about to
teach them the new topic that they will learnt by the students. The topic was about
Having Fun.
During the lesson, for my set induction, I used pictures to show to the
students about the list of activities that are fun to do. The set induction was good and
the students were able to guess the topic of the lesson taught which was about
Hobbies.
Moving on the pre-listening stage of the lesson, in this stage, I did taught the
students some new vocabulary for them to know which the words will then can be
found in the listening text that I used. The pre teaching of the new vocabulary were
not that difficult as m0st of the students already knew the meaning of the words.
Students were able to give me some of the hobbies that they like to do apart from
the activities that i already listed for them.
In the while listening stage, I gave the students worksheet to do which they
must listen to the listening text that I will read to them later. There were three
activities for the while listening stage because my lesson that day a 90 minutes
lesson and I had to come out with few activities for the students to do. In this stage, I
found that there was this problem I faced which was the method I used in making the
students to listen to the texts was not that efficient. This was because my voice
projection was not that loud for the whole class to listen and also the speed of my
reading of the texts was fast which gave the students problems to catch up with the
words that was being read to them. Thus it resulted for me to read again the text for
three times in order for the students to understand and able to answer the questions
given. In order to overcome the problem, a suitable method to use was having a
recorded version of the text and played it through a speaker which can be projected
loudly in the classroom. That was the weakness that i found in my while listening
stage.
For the speaking stage (post-listening), I could only managed to do one
activity only that was being planned which was to come in front of the class and talk

to their friends about their hobbies by using the sentence structure from the listening
text used earlier. Most of the students manage to speak using the right structure of
the sentence planned for them. I did not managed to carry out the spelling bee
activity for the students because mostly the time allocation for the speaking part was
not enough as the students uses more time during the while listening stage.
In conclusion, from what I could analysed from the lesson, I found out that the
materials I used in my teaching was not that suitable for the students level as it
requires a higher proficiency students to be able to listen to the text with the fast
tempo and also the activities that requires the students to memorize the story without
seeing the text. For room of improvements, the activity could be made easier than
the ones I prepared in order to make the learning achieved its objective.
