General Tips for Facebook

Use Facebook Naturally:

According to Clarke Cole, all social media platforms have their own strengths and
should be used in a way that draws on these strengths. As sites like Twitter have become
more popular, Facebook users sometimes feel the need to post briefly, efficiently, and
frequently. It is recommended that you post no more than one or two status updates each
day. Make sure to make your voice personal and do not directly copy and paste content
from other social media platforms. If you arent able to update at certain periods of time,
you can use the scheduling module in Publishing Tools at the top of your Facebook Page
(directions on pages 9-11).
Target Your Posts:

Consider targeting your post to particular groups. Based on your analytics, you
know that students ages 18-25 are looking at your page at around 10am, post a message
in the morning about volunteering or upcoming events that students can engage in. For
older people looking at your page at around 10pm, post a message at night about
donating and the work going on in the centers. Additionally, you can use Facebook
analytics in the Insights section at the top of your Facebook Page.
Use Visuals:

According to Clarke Cole, photo posts see twenty times more engagement that
video posts, status updates, and links through likes, clicks, comments, and shares, etc. This
creates a network in which your posts are posted on other users News Feeds more
frequently. This increases the amount of people viewing your posts and your presence on
Facebook. Note that you can use visuals when making text posts. Additionally, creating a
photo gallery on your Facebook allows users to see who you are as an organization, what
you do, and adds personality to your page.
Engage in Conversation with Your Followers:

The 2016 Facebook Calendar outlines major holidays of JCW that could be used
to increase donations, adoptions, and volunteers. However, dont be afraid to engage in
conversation with your followers. For example, with the 702 Walk the Talk coming up,
you could post, Dont forget to sign up for our team for the 702 Walk the Talk.
facebook.com/events/220913634942182/. You can also share news from other sources.
Try to focus it on news related to your organization, but dont be afraid to post on
popular issues and news. Keep a 3:1 ratio of posts related to your organization and
popular news posts.

Twitter
Dos and Donts of Twitter
Dos

Donts

Tweet using clear and concise

language: Based on research done on
the twitter of @NonProfitOrgs, it is
found that tweets written in complete
sentences without abbreviations are
retweeted more as are tweets that end
with a period or colon before the link.

Use more than two hashtags:

According to Nonprofit Tech for Good,
tweets with more than two hashtags
have a lower retweet rate. It is
recommended that you use hashtags
strategically to mention important
causes, events, and campaigns, but it is
not necessary to use hashtags in every
tweet.

Include a link with your tweet

when possible: According to
Nonprofit Tech for Good, tweets with
links have a 86% higher retweet rate.

Be robotic: Dont be afraid to be

personal and genuine in your posts.
Twitter Counter notes, Twitter gives
you a chance to set the tone for your
organization, so dont be afraid to show
some personality.

Use your twitter analytics

dashboard: According to Nonprofit
Tech for Good, in order to know what
types of tweets are getting the most
recognition, check your twitter analytics
dashboard at https://
analytics.twitter.com/. If you notice
a pattern in which tweets get the most
likes and retweets, you can post more of
them.

Engage with just your followers:

While engaging with your followers is
important and should be a priority,
don't be afraid to engage in
conversations and trending topics on
Twitter. According to Twitter Counter,
allows you to network with other people
and organizations and create some
publicity for your organization.
However, make sure to bring these
conversation back to the mission of
your organization.

General Tips for Twitter

Use Trending Topics To Boost Your Message

According to Quicksprout, tweets with hashtags double the engagement rate. If
you see a trending topic on Twitter that you feel you can turn around and use to talk
about your organization, use it. For example, if #charitytuesday is trending, consider
tweeting, Check out the great work were doing at Joburg Child Welfare and donate to
help us support the children of JCW. #charitytuesday or Donate today to Joburg Child
Welfare! #charitytuesday http://jhbchildwelfare.co.za/want-to-help/. However, dont
overdo the amount of hashtags that you use.

Follow Other Organizations with Similar Interest

Be sure to follow major donors and corporations on Twitter as well as other
organizations that have similar interest. For instance, following Princess Alice Home and
Jozi Kids will help create a network within your feed and will allow you to stay update
about the issues going on at these organizations. According to Clark Cole, retweeting
content from other organizations, pertaining to your mission, allows your to forge
connections and show your respect for their voices.

Be Active

Your followers will make their own decision on whether you post to much or not
enough. Some sources suggest that five or four tweets are the optimal number per day, but
having at least one tweet a day creates a visible presence while not crowding your
followers feeds. You should make sure that you are at least tweeting once a week to make
your presence know. Also, activity depends on the content you are posting. According to
Cole, if you are posting about recent news in your organizations field like new legislature
on child protection in South Africa, you can post many times a day to keep your followers
updated. However, if you are posting content about your events and project, less posts are
better. Additionally, if you arent able to tweet at certain periods of time, you can use tools
such as HootSuite, Twuffer, and TwittTimer to draft future post and schedule it for a later
time.
