SPECIAL BLOOD DRIVE HELD IN MEMORY OF PFC

NATHAN BROWN IN GLENS FALLS AND
SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. Nathan Brown was like
a lot of young adults. He enjoyed video games, music, family and
friends, and the outdoors. He had qualities that made him special,
including his kindness, generosity, and his willingness to help
others. He had great respect for veterans, and joined the New
York Army National Guard to serve our country. In 2004, Private
First Class Brown was killed during a mission in Iraq when a
rocket propelled grenade hit him in the chest. He was 21 years
old. For his courage, valor, and ultimate sacrifice, he received a
Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and a New York State Medal of Valor.
A special blood drive in his memory will be held in his hometown
of Glens Falls on Friday, May 20 Noon-6:30 p.m. Glens Falls
YMCA 600 Glen St., Glens Falls.
SFC (Ret.) Arthur Coon recruited PFC Brown. They saw each
other for the last time when PFC Brown was being deployed to
Iraq. As he was leaving, PFC Brown gave SFC (Ret.) Coon a
backpack as a gift, a gesture that demonstrates PFC Browns
generosity and how he always put others before himself. He
was such a good soldierhe was always at the Armory helping
out, said SFC (Ret.) Coon. People may not know that the New
York Army National Guard also does a lot in the community, and
Nate always asked if there was something more that he could do
for Glens Falls and other communities nearby. MAPFRE
Insurance and Kinney Agency are once again supporting the blood
drive. What a great way to remember Nate and give back to
others, noted Todd Miller, Kinney Agency. The community
honored PFC Browns generous and selfless spirit at the first blood
drive in his memory that was held last year. Support exceeded
the goal, with more than double the units of blood collected than
was expected. The Brown Family and the American Red Cross
hope the community will show their support again. All presenting
donors will receive two passes good for a Glens Falls Dragons
baseball game. How to donate blood: Simply download the
American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org
or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an
appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed
to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or
drivers license or two other forms of identification are required
at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental
consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in
generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school
students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have
to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Missouri has no illegals; go figure...shouldnt the other states

do the same? Missouris approach to the problem of illegal
immigration appears to be more advanced, sophisticated, strict
and effective than anything to date in Arizona.
I wonder, does the White House appreciate what Missouri
has done? So, why doesnt Missouri receive attention? Answer: There are no illegals in Missouri to demonstrate. The
Show Me state has again shown us how it should be done.
There needs to be more publicity and exposure regarding what
Missouri has done.
In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the official language
of Missouri. In November, 2008, nearly 90% voted in favor!
Thus, English became the official language for ALL governmental activity in Missouri. No individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.
In 2008, a measure was passed that required the Missouri
Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify
the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be in Missouri illegally. Missouri law enforcement officers receive specific training with respect to enforcement of federal immigration laws.
In Missouri, illegal immigrants do NOT have access to taxpayer benefits such as food stamps or health care through Missouri Health NET.
In 2009, a measure was passed that ensures Missouri s public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial
aid to individuals who are illegally in the United States. In
Missouri all post-secondary institutions of higher education
must annually certify to the Missouri Dept. Of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to
students who are unlawfully present in the United States.
So, while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it
is important to remember, Missouri has been far more proactive in addressing this horrific problem. Missouri has made it
clear that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in the state and
they will certainly NOT receive public benefits at the expense
of Missouri taxpayers. Credits to: The Ozarks Sentinel

Portrayal of Saint John Honeywood by Steve Trimm. Saint John
Honeywood arrived in Salem in the 1780s. He was a Yale graduate, a teacher and an attorney. Mr. Honeywood was odd. He wrote
poetry, he painted and he cared passionately about such curious
topics as Congressmen who fought duels, Daniel Shays hiding
in the nearby woods, how to raise pigs, the value of public education and the gender roles of men and women. Mr. Honeywood
eventually became Salems beloved eccentric and busybody.
Come out and Meet Mr. Honeywood and take in a few of his
tales in the Community Room at the Georgi on the Battenkill,

NEW S.R. STODDARD MINI-EXHIBIT OPENS AT
CHAPMAN MUSEUM IN GLENS FALLS: The Railroads:
Gateways to the Adirondacks Now to June 1, 2016 Seneca Ray
Stoddards work as a photographer in the mid-19th century paralleled the development of railroads in the nation, particularly
in the Glens Falls area and the Adirondacks. Numerous rail lines,
which provided access to the region from all directions, served
as gateways for travelers seeking an experience in the regions
interior. This new exhibit features seventeen Stoddard photos
taken from ca. 1870 to 1890. They include the Glens Falls and
North Creek train stations, the trestle over the Sacandaga River,
the D&H cut near Willsboro and the Prospect Mountain cable
RR. On his travels Stoddard photographed trains, too, including The Battery in New York City and the Green Mountain railway on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. Info: 518) 793-2826

Written by Rachel Essaff Maher

I hate that there is not a single word in the entire English language
that describes the exact emotion I am feeling right now. As a writer,
words are all that I have. People who dont write may not understand
this: I reach out as though casting a net into water (only it is not water,
but the vast sea of over five-hundred-thousand words that exist in our language) and I
pull the net through a tangle of things I do not mean to say, searching blindly in the
darkness of so many of the things I could say, moving my net this way and that way,
swishing back and forth for a scoop of just the right sort of thing but the words are as
elusive as the rarest tropical fish that burrows and hides among anemones, its rarity
cloaked by an endless supply of banality and cliche.
Still, for the most part, I have often managed to find the right words at the right times. I
have been able to write a great many things, some of which have made me proud and
some of which have been mildly disappointing, but most of which have been at least
good enough to share with others. The net is cast many times; often, it comes back with
a good stock of words that string together and some that even manage to evolve into
better words. But this time, on this day, the net is cast over and over, and it comes back
empty.
I cannot describe todays emotion. I am empty and full. I am sad and elated. I am a
success and a failure. Next month, I will be graduating with my Masters of Fine Arts
degree. Next month, I will have achieved the goal I have been pursuing for many years.
And next month, I will have nothing left to aim for. It will be the first time in four years
that I wont have homework. It will be the first time in four years that I wont have a
deadline hanging over me. And it will be the first time in four years that I wont have
classes, classmates, or complaints in common to commiserate with them about. I will be
lonely. I will be bored. And I will have nothing left to talk about with anyone.
When I thought about graduating, I never realized what it meant to graduate from one
era to another. As a mother of three young boys, I thought the end of my own education
would bring a sense of freedom and a newfound ability to concentrate on my children
and their schoolwork, only they have managed to establish their own identities as students,
just as I have, and I feel their need for me diminishing as they grow older no, as we
grow older. How many evenings have we sat, the boys and I, with our heads bent studiously
over books and reports together? How many evenings have we sat fretting over upcoming
tests and quizzes together? And how many times have we complained about assignments
or deadlines together?
This has been a family endeavor, all of it. Just as they have gone from infants and
toddlers to Kindergarteners and big kids, I have gone from adult student to college
graduate. The boys are taller, more independent. I am more independent too. Four years
have changed us all. Perhaps this is what bothers me most of all: this change, this ending
of an era, leaves me with this feeling; this complete and utter loss for the right word to
describe how it feels to be here at the end of such a long dedication to so many things all
at once; this failure to articulate, to demonstrate exactly what it means to succeed enough,
to surpass my own expectations of myself, and to stand at the edge of so many years,
alongside my children who have grown up alongside my thesis project, which measures
my years and my efforts and my hopes just as surely as it measures the sacrifice and the
stress and the absolute culmination of so much living, and leaves me here, gasping and
holding my breath while I cast the net again and again, looking for something that might
make more sense than all of these other words: the right word, the right emotion.
But what is it?

ON THE FARM

Dancer is a beautiful girl but timid. She is a mature

adult, and has been at the shelter because of her
shyness. She loves to hide in her little cat snuggle
cube as shown in the picture, where she feels warm
and safe. She does like to be pet on her head, and
will purr! She likes to occasionally come out and
explore, but when she feels insecure, she jumps back
in her house. Dancer would do best in a home
without other animals, or with another calm, older
cat. She needs a home where she will be able to
hide and feel safe. As an older cat, she would love
a quiet home to retire to, and where she may be
able to feel herself.

Why is the Conservation Reserve Program Trending Again?

On May 5, 2016, USDAs Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced the results of the latest signup for the Conservation Reserve Program
(CRP), the 49th general signup in the This weeks ag report is
programs distinguished 30-year history. About sponsored by:
1.8 million acres were offered for this years
general signup, and only 411,000 acres were
actually enrolled, making it the most selective
round ever with only a 23 percent acceptance
rate. In contrast, for the 45th general signup
in 2013, USDA accepted nearly 90 percent of
the acres offered under the general signup procedure.
As of March 1, 2016, 23.8 million acres were enrolled in the program, with CRP contracts on
1.65 million acres scheduled to expire as of September 30, 2016, the end of the current fiscal
year. The current acreage cap on the program is 24 million acres, established under the 2014
farm bill. The current area under CRP is 35 percent below the peak enrollment of 36.8 million
acres, which occurred in 2007.
The ratcheting down of the cap occurred during a period when policy makers were confident
that higher crop prices had lessened farmers interests in retiring cropland. Using a statutory
reduction in permitted enrollment of acres was the only way the Congressional Budget Office
(CBO) would allow Congress to capture budgetary savings from the anticipated change in farmers behavior.
In the face of declining crop prices over the last few years, farmers are clearly struggling to find
a scenario under which they might actually be able to generate a profit. Many market analysts
were shocked by USDAs estimate in its March 31st Prospective Plantings report that farmers
would plant 93.6 million acres of corn in the 2016/17 crop year, an increase of 6 percent over the
previous year despite facing a price that has dropped by more than 50 percent over the past three
years. Overall, the report indicates that U.S. acres planted to grains, oilseeds, and cotton will
decline by less than 1 million acres as compared to the 2015/16 crop year, suggesting that
farmers have few choices other than to grow a crop, even though at current prices most crops
will generate less market revenue than it cost to plant them. The average cost of producing a
bushel of corn for 2016 (variable and fixed)(this varies depending on location) is an estimated
$3.98 per bushel. As of the May 2016 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE)
report put out by USDA, the mid-point of the projected corn price for 2016/17 is $3.35 per
bushel. If a farmer averages 180 bushels per acre for corn, the current price would yield that
farmer a $113 loss for every acre planted.
No wonder the prospect of receiving a rental payment for retiring ones land under the CRP for
10 to 15 years, even at only $51 per acre on average for land under general sign-ups, is seen as
a viable option right now for many farmers. If that action also generates environmental benefits,
such as improved water quality, improved wildlife habitat, and improved air quality, that is also
an attractive feature for farmers, most of whom really care about the land they farm on.
However, not only is the current cap of 24 million acres 47 percent below the 45 million acre
level established under the original authorization in the 1985 Food Security Act, the creation of
special categories under the program, such as state-based Conservation Reserve Enhancement
Program (CREP), and the continuous CRP process that allows certain types of land such as
buffer strips or farmable wetlands to be enrolled at any time, has reduced the number of acres
that can be enrolled through general sign-ups. As of March 1, 2016, there were 6.5 million acres
under contract through these special categories, leaving cap space for only 17.5 million acres
for regular cropland or grassland to be enrolled.
Over its lifetime, CRP has generated numerous environmental benefits for the country. USDA
has compiled the following figures:
The CRP has prevented more than 9 billion tons of soil erosion since 1985, which is enough to
fill 600 million dump trucks,
Each year, CRP has reduced nitrogen runoff on tilled cropland by 95 percent, and has reduced
phosphorus runoff by 85 percent,
CRP has created nearly 2.7 million acres of restored wetlands, and
CRP has resulted in the sequestration of an annual average of 49 million tons of greenhouse
gases, which is equivalent to taking about 9 million cars off the road.
If crop prices remain low, Congress may want to reverse the downward pressure that it has been
putting on the CRP acreage cap for the last decade. If managed correctly, a 30 million acre CRP
can generate a lot more environmental benefits, including reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through broader use of climate-smart practices, than can a 24-million acre program, and
also serve as an improved safety valve for crop farmers.

Just Thinking
By: May Jones
I think Ive inherited a special gene that determines specific personality
characteristics and behaviors. It came straight from my father gift wrapped
and all. Its the tinkering and puttering gene. According to the strictest of
definitions, these are two very different things, but they mean the same thing
to us. We make unskilled experimental repairs (tinkering) without rushing or
trying too hard (puttering). One could say we putter around tinkering with things.
An inventor at heart, my father has discovered solutions for thousands of
things in need of fixing. In his proud possession are rescued horse saddles
and guns, a resurfaced glue pot from his grandfather and even an acorn doll.
Tinkering and puttering to him means doing what you want to do and not what
you have to do. In his garage are many projects waiting for his return. In the
southwestern corner lay a set of rusty old chains found in a field that he intends
to bring back to their original glory. In the northeastern corner theres an old
engine he is working on. In his sugar shack, hes been contemplating where
to wire a light that will shine brightly on his newly engineered sap finishing
station. A sawhorse is always at the ready, and within easy reach, a rag and
an oil can.
Although I am not as refined at tinkering and puttering as my father is, similar
corners can be found in my surroundings. In the sewing room, a dress bodice
waits for its skirt. In the closet, family photos in the form of slides are patiently
waiting to enter the world of digitalization. Sitting on my desk are a quill pen,
various nibs, and notecards waiting for just the right words, and alongside
them, an overstuffed folder with childrens artwork waiting for fancy placement
in a scrapbook. Activities such as these require a certain amount of meditative
concentration, which in turn makes the mind behave itself for a while and makes
time slow down just a bit.
In the essay A Hundred Thousand Straightened Nails by Donald Hall, the
main character is a fellow by the name of Washington who invented work for
himself by pulling bent nails out of boards and straightening them for later
use. He had saved nails and wasted life the author said. I resolutely disagree.
That was time well spent!
