Sigma Pi History

1966 Thomas G. Johnson transfers to Murray State from Vincennes University

where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity and one of the men who had
reactivated Alpha chapter. He gets permission from Sigma Pi Executive Secretary
James Hills and Murray State President Dr. Ralph Woods to start a Sigma Pi colony.
1967 A Sigma Pi colony is formed when the Murray State InterFraternity Council
gives Mr. Johnson permission to hold a special rush in the Spring semester. The rush
was like an open house to meet men who were interested in becoming Sigma Pi
members. In the Fall semester brothers Steven R. Miller and John Schroeder
transferred from Vincennes to Murray State and a rush was held at the same time
as other fraternities. (per Thomas Johnson)
1968 MSU President Dr. Ralph Woods applied for a non-commercial educational
radio license from the Federal Communications Commission at the urging of Dr. Ray
Mofield (FA). This license would become WKMS in 1970.
1968 Past Grand Sage J. Robert Odaniell speaks to the colony during its Sigma Pi
Founders Day celebration.
1968 Chapter chartered on May 4th with fifty-two members of the Alpha Pledge
class (largest pledge class) and two advisors, Dr. Ray Mofield and Charles
Lounsbury. The chartering team included Grand Sage Lyle H. Smith, Grand Second
Counselor Kenneth C. Hughes, Lambda Province Archon Walter B. Young, Grand
Fourth Counselor Lawrence H. Bixby, Honorary Grand Sage Curtis G. Shake, and
Executive Secretary James L Hills. Brothers from Beta Gamma chapter at Eastern
Illinois and Beta Nu chapter at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale also attended
the ceremony. Murray State President Dr. Harry Sparks attended the banquet after
the chartering. The first chapter officers were: Sage Archie Rodgers Jr., Second
Counselor Michael L. Lawler, Third Counselor John W. Carson, Fourth Counselor
Dean H. Despin, First Counselor Denny G. Cook, and Herald Thomas Harwood.
(per The Emerald)
1969 House at 1315 Main Street is rented by the chapter.
The chapter began our search for a house, which at the time was as difficult then to
find one as it is today. Andy Morris () found a property across the street from the
Dairy Queen that had apartments in the rear, and we agreed to rent the house. We
ordered furniture, beds, dressers, etc, and were ready to move in. Upon returning
from spring break we drove past the house only to find the furniture setting outside
in front of the house, as the landlord had rented it to someone else. We were
screwed!

Paul McDonald () worked for a furniture store that allowed us to store the furniture
until we found another house. At the time Kappa Alpha Order was living in the Main
Street house, but was moving to a house at Five Points, making the Main Street
house available. Andy found out from one of the KA members who the landlord was
and approached him about leasing the house. The landlord was Geno Diamont the
owner of Geno's Pizza next door to the Dairy Queen. This was in the 1969-70 school
year. We took possession of the house in the summer of 69' and worked to get it
ready for the fall 69' school year. Although we had furnishing for the bed rooms,
there was nothing for the first floors. Our landlord Geno stepped up and bought
furniture for the house. The house slept 14 men. (per Les Wright())

1969 Chapter purchases a bench for Shadowwood.
1969 Spring Emerald
FROM PLEDGESHIP TO ACTIVATION
Dedicated to Beta Pledge Class,
Gamma-Upsilon

With serious forethought and all of our

heart,
We come to the Brothers for secrets impart,
A series of service we all must partake
To prove to the Brothers a Brother we'll
make.
When right the time comes that we all shall
make
A solemn request for the Golden Quest,
With secrets we take and vows which we
make
We then seal our lives as a Brother that
date
So look thou upon it, and let it be known
That we are all Brothers from now till now
on
For mysteries and secrets divulged to us
Shall tum with our bones to grave-yard dust.

Sigma Pi Fraternity added a new dimension to their brotherhood with, the Sigma Pi
Fall Festival Dec. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Curris Center Ballroom. Scott Harris, cofundraising chairman for Sigma Pi, said the fraternity decided to sponsor the fall
festival to raise money for charity and to be more involved with the sororities on
campus. "We donated the money to our national philanthropy, which is multiple
schlerosis," Harris said. "We also wanted to do it for public relations."
Each sorority paid an entry fee, and T-shirts were sold to raise $120 for the medical
charity. The sororities competed in a variety of events. Alpha Phi won first place in
the pie-eating and trivia events and second place overall. Alpha Sigma Alpha won
first place overall by placing first in the limbo, line dance and mystery events.
Alpha Sigma Alpha also won the Miss Fall Festival competition when member Tiffany
Nunn was named Miss Fall Festival. Nunn, a freshman undeclared major from
Evansville, Ind., said she liked the competition because it was different. "I thought it
was good because if wasn't just based on looks. It had to do with the person's
personality," she said. Each contestant was asked to wear some-thing that suited
her personality and then explain why it described her.
The Sigma Pi sweethearts also assisted the brothers by demonstrating each event
before the competition. However, they did not compete. Sabrina Sisk, a Sigma Pi
sweetheart, said she liked the participation from all the sororities and their support
for the fraternity. "It showed the closeness of the Greek life here on campus," Sisk
said. Richard Elmore, a senior English major from Louisville, said he also thought
the day was successful. "It was a good time and it was still completely under

control," Elmore said. Harris said overall he thought everyone had a wonderful
time. "We had a couple of events that haven't been done before," Harris said.
Sigma Pi hoped to develop the Fall Festival from a new dimension to a lasting
tradition. (per the 1990 MSU Shield)

around $7,000 in federal taxes dating back to 1999 and property taxes of $8,500 for
2006 and 2007. Bills were being sent to the old address of a brother no longer on
the Housing Corp. Mortgage payments are $1,350 per month and we are paying
8.25 percent on the loan. The mortgage is $86,995. We pay $465 per month on
insurance for nine months a year. Chad Hall () gets the PVA to re-evaluate the
house (it did have an assessed value of $245,000) and that drops our future tax
payments. Paul Hetrick () works to get our tax situation cleaned up and have the
housing corp setup as a not-for-profit entity with the IRS. A committee is formed to
look at options for the housing corp. The committee consists of Chad Hall () Housing Corp President, Joey Bartolotti () - Active Chapter Sage, Jay Morgan () MSU Faculty Member, Tony Mattingly () CPA, and Gary Houck (). They
recommend executing a one year deferral of principal payments on the mortgage
(once approved by the bank), which saves us about $700 per month for the next 12
months. Many alumni donate money to help us get caught up. Active chapter size
is expected to be 22 in the fall. KyTAC pays one of the tax bills. CEF Board loans
the Housing Corp $2,500.
