NTNU - knowledge for a better world

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change
everyday life.

PhD position in Fluid Dynamics: Wave Current Interactions

A PhD position is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, in the Fluid Mechanics division. The appointment has
a duration of 3 years as researcher towards the degree of PhD. The position is financed by the Research Council of Norway.
Within the field of theoretical hydrodynamics the candidate will be focussing on the physics of surface waves in the presence of subsurface currents, in particular the development of analytical and semi-analytical models for wave-calculations in the presence of shear
current. Wave-current interactions are of technological importance in many branches of marine hydrodynamics, such as for ships and
vessels, sea loads on marine structures, coastal erosion and sediment transport, and is a primary candidate mechanism for the
formation of giant waves. Hence, although of theoretical nature, results obtained are of immediate applicability to important real world
challenges.
The primary research will be analytical, supported where necessary by numerical calculation. The research has a fundamental,
theoretical and physical focus, and is not intended to rely heavily on the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Some specific
questions that might be part of the thesis work are non-linear extensions of existing linear wave theory for wave-current systems, the
onset of modulational instability, approximate methods for waves on general shear profiles, stratified density flows, and the role of critical
layers.
The PhD candidate must hold a master's level degree or equivalent in a relevant field, primarily physics or applied mathematics,
although candidates with master's level education in relevant branches of engineering will also be considered, provided a strong
background in analytical mathematics can be documented. Advanced previous knowledge of fluid mechanics and surface wave physics
is an advantage, but not a prerequisite if the mathematical and physical background is strong. Numerical programming expertise will be
required to support the analytical work, and is prerequisite. On the other hand, candidates whose background is primarily in engineering
CFD are unlikely to be suitable.
The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average
grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from
universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the
study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree.
For further information about the position, contact Associate Professor Simen . Ellingsen (simen.a.ellingsen@ntnu.no).
Conditions of appointment:
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage level 50, gross NOK 430 200 before tax. There
will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts
of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of
19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and
appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The
positions adhere to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Women are encouraged to apply.
According to the new Freedom of Information Act, information concerning the applicant may be made public even if the applicant has
requested not to be included in the list of applicants.
The application must contain information of educational background and work experience. Certified copies of transcripts and reference
letters should be enclosed.
Applications with CV, grade transcripts and other enclosures should be submitted.
