An analysis of the etymology of the 41,000 words in Aquilina's Maltese-English Dictionary shows that words
of Romance origin make up 52% of the Maltese vocabulary,[4] although other sources claim from as low as
40%,[6] to as high as 55%.[33] These vocabularies tend to deal with more complicated concepts. They are
mostly derived from Sicilian and thus exhibit Sicilian phonetic characteristics, such as /u/ in place of /o/, and /i/ in
place of /e/ (e.g. tiatru not teatro and fidi not fede). Also, as with Old Sicilian, // (English 'sh') is written 'x'
and this produces spellings such as: ambaxxata /ambaata/ ('embassy'), xena /ena/ ('scene' cf. Italian
ambasciata, scena).

A tendency in modern Maltese is to adopt further influences from English and Italian. Complex Latinate English
words adopted into Maltese are often given Italianate or Sicilianate forms,[4] even if the resulting words do not
appear in either of those languages. For instance, the words "evaluation", "industrial action", and "chemical
armaments" become "evalwazzjoni", "azzjoni industrjali", and "armamenti kimii" in Maltese, while the
Italian terms are valutazione, vertenza sindacale, and armi chimiche respectively. English words of Germanic
origin are generally preserved relatively unchanged.
Siculo-Arabic
Siculo-Arabic is the ancestor of the Maltese language,[4] and supplies between 32%[4] and 40%[6] of the
language's vocabulary.

ammit (2000) found that 40% of a sample of 1,820 Quranic Arabic roots were found in Maltese, a lower
percentage than found in Moroccan (58%) and Lebanese Arabic (72%).[34] An analysis of the etymology of the
41,000 words in Aquilina's Maltese-English Dictionary shows that 32% of the Maltese vocabulary is of
Arabic origin,[4] although another source claims 40%.[6][35] Usually, words expressing basic concepts and
ideas, such as rael (man), mara (woman), tifel (boy), dar (house), xemx (sun), sajf (summer), are of Arabic
origin. Moreover, belles lettres in Maltese tend to aim mainly at diction belonging to this group.[36]
The Maltese language has merged many of the original Arabic consonants, in particular the emphatic
consonants, with others that are common in European languages. Thus, original Arabic /d/, //, and /d/ all
merged into Maltese /d/. The vowels, however, separated from the three in Arabic (/a i u/) to five, as is more
typical of other European languages (/a i o u/). Some unstressed short vowels have been elided. The common
Arabic greeting as salmu 'alaykum is cognate with is-sliem galikom in Maltese (lit. the peace for you,
peace be with you), as are similar greetings in other Semitic languages (e.g. shalom alekhem in Hebrew).
Since the attested vocabulary of Siculo-Arabic is limited, the following table compares cognates in Maltese and

It is estimated that English loanwords, which are becoming more commonplace, make up 20% of the Maltese
vocabulary,[6] although other sources claim amounts as low as 6%.[4] This percentage discrepancy is due to the
fact that a number of new English loanwords are sometimes not officially considered part of the Maltese
vocabulary; hence, they are not included in certain dictionaries.[4] Also, English loanwards of Latinate origin are
very often italianised, as discussed above. English loanwords are generally transliterated, although standard
English pronunciation is virtually always retained. Below are a few examples:
Maltese
futbol
English
football
baskitbol basketball
klabb
club
lift
lift/elevator
fri
fridge
Note "fridge", which is a slang term derived from "refrigerator", a Latinate word which might be expected to be
rendered as rifrieratori (Italian uses a different word: frigorifero).
Grammar
Maltese grammar is fundamentally derived from Siculo-Arabic, although Romance and English noun pluralization
patterns are also used on borrowed words.
Nouns
Nouns are pluralized and also have a dual marker. Semitic plurals are complex; if they are regular, they are
marked by -iet/-ijiet, e.g., art, artijiet "lands (territorial possessions or property)" (cf. Arabic -at and Hebrew ot/-oth) or -in (cf. Arabic -n and Hebrew -im). If irregular, they fall in the pluralis fractus category, in which a
word is pluralized by internal vowel changes: ktieb, kotba "books", rael, iriel "man", "men".
Words of Romance origin are usually pluralized in two manners: addition of -i or -jiet. For example, lingwa,
lingwi "languages", from Sicilian lingua, lingui.
Words of English origin are pluralized by adding either an "-s" or "-jiet", for example, fri, friis from the word
fridge. Some words can be pluralized with either of the suffixes to denote the plural. A few words borrowed
from English can amalgamate both suffixes, like brikksa from the English brick, which can adopt either
collective form brikks or the plural form brikksiet.
Article
The proclitic il- is the definite article, equivalent to "the" in English.
The Maltese article becomes l- before or after a vowel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltese_language
10/15
06/02/2015
Verbs
Verbs show a triliteral Semitic pattern, in which a verb is conjugated with prefixes, suffixes, and infixes (for
example ktibna, Arabic katabna, Hebrew kathabhnu (Modern Hebrew: katavnu) "we wrote"). There are two
tenses: present and perfect. The Maltese verb system incorporates Romance verbs and adds Maltese suffixes
and prefixes to them (for example, iddeidejna "we decided" (i)ddeieda "decide", a Romance verb + ejna, a Maltese first person plural perfect marker).
Dialects
Urban varieties of Maltese are closer to Standard Maltese than rural varieties,[36] which have some
characteristics that distinguish them from Standard Maltese. They tend to show some archaic features[36] such
as the realization of kh and gh and the imala of Arabic into (or especially in Gozo)-considered archaic
because they are reminiscent of 15th century transcriptions of this sound.[36] Another archaic feature is the
realization of Standard Maltese as in rural dialects.[36] There is also a tendency to diphthongize simple
vowels, e.g., becomes eo or eu.[36] Rural dialects also tend to employ more Semitic roots and broken plurals
than Standard Maltese.[36] In general, rural Maltese is less distant from its Siculo-Arabic ancestor than Standard
Maltese.[36]

Survival Maltese
SURVIVAL
MALTESE
By
Grazio Falzon
MERHBA! WELCOME!
This SURVIVAL MALTESE is intended for pleasure, especially to those planning a trip to the Maltese islands. Being able to
speak even a few words will guarantee an appreciative and warm response.
I suggest that you follow the initial sequence of this Survival Maltese, esp. in regards to pronunciation and basic expressions. This
gives you not only a minimum vocabulary, but also helps you get used to pronouncing the language. The phonetic transcription
enables you to pronounce every word.
The imitated pronunciation should be read as if it were General American English. Of course, the sounds of any two languages are
never exactly identical; but if you follow the indications provided here, you'll be able to read my transcriptions in such a way as to
make yourself understood.
I tested out my transcription method on my California wife; she could pronounce perfect Maltese by reading off my transcriptions.
I am deeply appreciative to linguist Bjarne Skov (University of Oslo, Norway) and Hector Barca (Madrid Spain) for their
invaluable feedback.
I hope you have as much fun learning some basic Maltese as I had working on this project.

vowel concerned.
When 'GH' is followed by the vowel 'i' it takes the sound of 'ay' in the
English word 'bay'. When 'GH' is followed by the vowel 'u' it takes the
sound of 'ou' in the English word 'soul'.
When 'GH' is the final letter in a word, it is pronounced as a soft
aspirate sound like 'h' in the English word 'hair'.
The phonetic transcription will show the correct variation in
pronunciation.
N.B.(1) General rules governing the length of vowels:
-- All vowels at the end of a word are short and unstressed.
-- All vowels are long when they are stressed and are followed
by one consonant. They are short when followed by more than
one consonant.
-- A long vowel becomes shorter when the word in which it occurs
is followed by a word beginning with a consonant and carrying
the main stress. E.g. dar sabiha.
THE ARTICLE
The definite article "the", in Maltese is "l", linked by a hyphen to the following noun or adjective.
E.g. l-orizzont (the horizon), l-isbah (the most beautiful).
The article becomes "il-" if the following word begins with a consonant. E.g. il-mera (the mirror), ilquddiesa (the Mass), il-qamar (the moon), il-lapis (the pencil), il-habs (the prison), il-ghasfur or lghasfur (the bird), il-herra or l-herra (the rudenss).
The definite article changes to match the following word in certain instances when the initial
consonant is c, d, n, r, s, t, x, z (voiced), or z E.g. ic-cirku (the circle), id-duhhan (the smoke), innemel (the ants), ir-rahal (the village), is-suwed (the blacks), it-tagen (the frying pan), ix-xitan (the
devil), iz-zalza (the sauce), iz-zunzan (the bee).

N.B. The formation of the plural number in Maltese for both adjectives and nouns does not follow
uniform patterns. The reader is encouraged to learn the plural forms as he or she encounters them.
COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES

the adjective. Following are examples of the main patterns:
qawwi (strong)
ohxon (fat)
fqir (poor)
ghali (costly)
aqwa (stronger)

THE VERB
In Maltese, verbs do not have an infinitive form. Verb moods and tenses are constructed from a
root form which consists of the third person singular, masculine, Perfect Tense.
There are five categories of conjugations:
1) STRONG:
Verbs having three or four root consonants.
KiTeB (he wrote); HaRBaT (he ruined)
2) DEFECTIVE:
Verbs having a silent third radical "gh".
TaFa for TaFaGH (he threw)
3) WEAK: Verbs having a third radical semi vowel "j". QaRa for
QaRaJ (he read)
4) HOLLOW:
Verbs having long "a" or "ie" (for original
etymological "awa" and "aja") between initial and final stem
consonants. DaM for DaWaM (he delayed); SaB for SaJaB (he found)
5) DOUBLED:
Verbs having double third radical.
GaRR (he transported)

DERIVED VERBS
Derived verbal stems are categorized into nine groups according to formation and meaning of
verbs.
PATTERN 1
Verbs doubling a middle radical. The meaning is generally intensive,
causative or transitive.
Ex: kisser (he smashed); raqqad (he put to sleep); kabbar (he enlarged).
Conjugation:
Perfect
Present
Imperative
Past Part.
Verb. Noun
PATTERN 2
This is formed by lengthening the first vowel which gives a causal
function to the verb.
Ex: bierek (he blessed); qieghed (he placed).
Conjugation:
Perfect
Present

PATTERN 3
This group is now obsolete. It used to have a causative function. A rare
example is wera (he showed).
Conjugation:
Perfect
Present
Imperative
Past Part.
Verb. Noun
PATTERN 4
This group is formed by prefixing "t" to Pattern 1 verbs. Resultant
meaning is reflexive, reciprocal, or passive. This "t" assimilates with
the initial letters: c, d, g (soft), n, s, x, z (voiced), or z.
Ex: tkabbar (he grew proud); (i)ccahhad (he denied himself); (i)ssellef
(he borrowed); tghallaq (he hanged himself).
