Individual Psychotherapy
Each patient meets with his individual psychiatrist on a regular basis for individual psychotherapy. Although the particular
approach employed is at the discretion of the psychiatrist, an eclectic approach generally includes a significant supportive
element interwoven with other strategies from interpersonal, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Effort is
invested in developing the ability to express and understand affect and to analyze behavior as it derives from both emotion and
learning. As the crisis situation stabilizes, therapy generally focuses increasingly on realistically enhancing self-esteem,
developing an expanded category of coping skills and improving interpersonal relationships.
Pharmacotherapy
Pharmacotherapy may be ordered by the psychiatrist after thorough clinical assessment. Informed consent is obtained from the
parent or guardian and assent from the patient, both following review of the medication prescribed and its effects, side effects,
risks and potential benefits. The nursing staff is routinely involved in the education of patients and parents regarding medication
and in the monitoring for side effects. Pretreatment laboratory work is obtained as indicated and careful blood level monitoring
is utilized, as available. The hospital pharmacist, particularly with regard to adverse side effects and potential drug interactions
routinely reviews medications.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is an especially important treatment mode for families with adolescents. When family members needs are not
met, emotional and behavioral problems often develop. Frequently a youngsters emotional, or behavioral difficulties, may signal
significant family distress. Hence, the adolescents symptoms may provide the incentive for the family to seek therapy and
realize the multiple aspects of the problem.
Family therapy is conducted by the social services clinician and focuses on a thorough assessment on the family dynamics,
improving family communication, problem identification and increasing awareness of each others needs. The aim of family
therapy is to see the family from a comprehensive perspective. The therapist has opportunities to educate parents in areas
such as discipline, limit setting, problem solving and basic parenting skills. If the family system has not sufficiently stabilized to
allow the immediate reintegration of the patient, family therapy helps determine and facilitate placement.
Groups
Adolescents are naturally drawn to groups, as peer groups provide important opportunities for teens to meet as equals within
their own generation, communicate, understand others points of view, get along with others, compare self with others, define
ones social role, and perfect ones social skills. Since peer affiliations in the form of group activity is the norm during
adolescence, group interventions are more akin to the norm and frequently less threatening than other forms of therapy, such
as individual psychotherapy. Group reinforcement is often more powerful than individual reinforcement in this age group.
Psychoeducational group topics may include but are not limited to: gender issues, social skills, drug education, self awareness,
current events, relaxation, wrap up, and chemical dependency.
School
In order to normalize the adolescents hospital experience and maintain his current academic standing, the program utilizes the
hospitals fully accredited school. Following a thorough academic assessment, an individualized education plan is completed.
The director of the school contacts the patients home school and assists in discharge planning for continuing education
