L-2-2 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide evidenced
informed, client centered care in relation to pediatric nursing: Involve
family and caregivers in care.

The family, guardian or support system plays a key role in maintaining

the health of the client as it will make the child feel more secure and
comfortable during nursing care. The experience of learning the
importance of nurse and family collaboration has strengthened my
ability to include and encourage the support system in participating
during pediatric nursing care in order to achieve the overall wellbeing of
the client. Re: A child may feel unease and stressed when suffering from
illness, being surrounded by healthcare providers as well as being in a
new environment such as hospitals. This concern can affect the mental
aspect of the child. In situation like this, parents are the primary source
of support providing security in what can be a traumatic event in childs
life. Therefore, the involvement of family or support system during
nursing care is vital in order to maximize the desirable outcome of
childs health.

medicine; with the understanding that medication administration to child
can be a big challenge for the nurses to fulfill as child may act
aggressively and may feel afraid of the medicine. I have learned that it is
important that the family (mom or dad) comes into play in giving the
medication if nurses was not able to do so. Moreover, when a child
suffers from illness, the childs response can change and behavior can be
affected as well. I have learned that during this critical moment,

emotional support must be emphasized and the support must come from
the family first. family or care givers should be with the child in every
hospital procedure whether it is simple assessment, attending personal
needs, being in the clients room and even post-surgery as the presence
of the family can lessen the anxiety and confusion of the child. These
measures are related to competency that I have chosen because it simply
shows the participation of the family and care givers during the nursing
care. The knowledge and ability to provide evidenced inform, focus on
client centered care and including the family in nursing care process is
meaningful as it will help the nurse, client and family achieve health to
its optimum level.

I would rate my proficiency as fair as I was able to understand the

competency in theory. Attending the class, listening to my instructor,
reading books and lectures has helped me achieved this competency.
However, I was not able to apply it in scenarios and nursing practice yet.
Nevertheless, I am certain that I will be able to use this competency in
my clinical and future job setting.

I will apply this learning practice in my clinical by encouraging the

family to participate during nursing care such as being present during the
assessment of the client and helping the client to complete task (feeding,
bathing, changing clothes). In the future nursing practice, I will apply
this learning by giving the family an opportunity to address concerns,
keeping them informed about medical procedure and allowing them to
make decisions based on what they believed.
