Dear Parishioners,
We celebrate the Feast of the Blessed Trinity today. We are
brought face to face with the MYSTERY of GOD. In dealing with the
mystery of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit we remember the words of
Thomas Aquinas which he calls the misery of language. Our human
minds and especially our vocabulary cannot grasp the mystery of the
Trinity.
People often ask why doesnt God reveal himself more to us why is he so hidden. To
those we answer: what about Jesus Christ, the Son of God; the Word made flesh; the Advocate,
the Holy Spirit of Pentecost; God as Creator of the universe . We need to recall what we know
of God as he has revealed himself to us. We recall too, out faith in God and the Creed we recite
regularly.
It is not as if we are in total darkness about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But the direct
question, who or what is the Trinity, can leave us speechless! Ive begun to use the example:
try to explain to somebody who lived centuries ago, the workings of a mobile phone!! We could
supply, Michael Angelo, Aristotle, Francis of Assisi, Napoleon, St John Vianney with a Dummys
Guide to the mobile phone, but what good would it be? All the jargon and technical terms
could be expressed to them BUT they would have no idea what you are talking about.
This may not be the most perfect example, but it does take us in the realm of the difficulty
of trying to explain a MYSTERY OF GOD, in human language and to us who cannot comprehend,
the life of God, heaven, the Trinity and the many other aspects of our faith that we only partially
grasp. Our constant prayer can be: Lord, I believe, help my unbelief!
CONGRATULATIONS too to our teenagers who will celebrate the Sacrament of
Confirmation at our 6pm Mass today. We welcome Bishop John Sherrington who will conduct the
ceremony. Our prayers and good wishes to all our young people.
SABBATICAL: Sr. Clara will be having a sabbatical in the coming months. She deserves a
break to recharge the batteries. She will have a months retreat, a bit of study and a holiday with
her family. We thank Sr Clara for her ministry here in St John Vianney as well as the ministry in
her own Verbum Dei Fraternity. We wish her well during her time away and look forward to her
return to us in September, please God.
In the meantime, Sisters Monica and Susana will be present after Masses on the weekends
to make contact with parishioners and help deal with various inquiries.
PARACHUTE JUMP: Just 10 days to go before the BIG LEAP! Thanks for all who are
sponsoring to date. There is still plenty of time for further sponsorship. Thank you all.
Have a nice week! Fr Joe
