MAIN WEATHER OBSERVATIONS


(Recorded during past 24 hours)
Severe heat wave to heat wave conditions are prevailing over many parts of Bihar. Heat wave conditions are also
prevailing over many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Telengana, interior Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and few
places over Rajasthan, Gujarat and interior Orissa.

The highest maximum temperature of 47.3°C was recorded at Wardha (Maharashtra).

Synoptic features (based on 0530 hrs IST)


The trough from northeast Jharkhand to northeast Assam across Gangetic West Bengal, Bangladesh and Meghalaya
with embedded upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Jharkhand and neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea
level persists.

Another trough from East Madhya Pradesh to south Tamilnadu across Vidarbha, Telangana and Karnataka in lower
levels persists.

The western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir persists as an upper air system along
with an induced upper air cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining northwest Rajasthan in lower levels.

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) Guidance


The western disturbance is likely to affect western Himalayan region during next 2 days.
A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect western Himalayan region from 16th onwards.

Satellite Observations:
KALPANA–1 Cloud imagery at 0530 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam,
Meghalaya, south Arabian Sea, southwest Bay of Bengal and central Andaman Sea. Low/medium clouds are seen over
rest parts of the country.

Major features of weather forecast (upto 0530 hours IST of 17th May, 2010)
Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and scattered
over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over Jammu & Kashmir
during next 48 hours.Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during next
24 hours and isolated thereafter.

Isolated duststorm / thunderstorms may occur over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during next 48
hours. Isolated rain/thundershowers may occur over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Marathawada during next 24
hours and over Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan & Goa after 24 hours. Isolated rain/thundershowers would occur over
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next 24 hours and
scattered thereafter.

Isolated rain/thundershowers may occur over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Orissa during next
48 hours and over Bihar after 24 hours. Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over Kerala, coastal and south
interior Karnataka and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and isolated over Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka,
Lakshadweep and Tamilnadu. Rainfall activity may increase over Andaman & Nicobar Islands after 24 hours.

No significant change in maximum temperatures over plains of northwest, central and east India.
Warning

Thundersqualls would occur at some places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and isolated
places over West Bengal & Sikkim, northeastern States, Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh and Orissa during next
24 hours. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers would occur over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and
Meghalaya during next 48 hours.

Fairly widespread rainfall activity would occur over northeastern States.
Scattered rain/thundershowers activity would occur over western Himalayan region.
