College Management Team Consider Development of ILT

CMT spent most of last Friday’s meeting
considering how to ensure students have
the information skills needed to succeed
and how to improve the college’s e-
learning facilities.
Mike Searle and Alan Yeodal attended the
meeting to discuss what recommendations
could be made to the SLG, Learning
Development Group and Capital Group
concerning the most effective ways of
encouraging the incorporation of ILT and
e-learning into schemes of work and
improving access to Learning Centres for
independent and drop-in learners.
During their presentation, CMT were
asked what was the primary reason for
the high use of e-learning.
The correct answer is apparently, the
enthusiasm of staff. But how do you get
this enthusiasm?
Perhaps the answer can be found in
what actually happened at the meeting.
A look at a useful resource and clever
piece of technology sparked some
interest. The meeting livened up at the
point where those present were given
Turning Point voting handsets to respond
to the questions on the slides. Marketing
and Human Resources were particularly
impressed with the kit and asked if
they could be trained to use it, seeing
its usefulness for staff development
and presentations. We blenders have
had a flurry of interest as members of
CMT have mentioned what they saw and
heard to their colleagues.
Management commitment, access to
relevant, good quality resources, the
opportunity for training in order to
gain confidence and competence all
combined to create that elusive thing,
staff enthusiasm. Basically ... if you have
what you need, it works well and your
boss makes it as easy as possible for
you to use it ... you can’t go wrong.

THIS WEEK IN MOODLE

We have a new champion Moodler. Kate Hobbs, part time lecturer in
Travel Operations, is moodling with enthusiasm and has surged up the
leader board as she populates her Moodle with a range of interactive
resources for Travel and Tourism Students.
Looking at her user reports it is clear the students are showing their
appreciation for all her hard work, accessing Moodle at the weekend
to check out what’s online and get on with their colllege work.
Kate is using a range of resources from industry and has RSS feeds

for a travel lecturer materials produced by NLN.

CASESTUDY: A look at Lucy Baughan and Donna Jacobs’

use of video in Health and Beauty and Zebedee’s Nursery
In Health and Beauty Lucy Baughan, who
teaches holistic facial massage, borrowed
a dvcam to produce a set of video
demonstrations of various beauty procedures.
The procedures have been broken up into
manageable chapters on dvd.

Moodle and distribution to students on dvd.
Donna Jacobs (Health, Care and
Early Years) has embraced video
technology with enthusiasm and
become quite proficient in a very
short time.
The first time she borrowed one
of the cameras, she said that the
children in the nursery seemed more
comfortable with the technology
than she was but this just spurred
her on.
Donna recorded her students
interactions with the children using
the video record facility of our digital
stills cameras.
As well as being a great teaching
aid, she was also able to produce an
end of term show for the children,
who love seeing themselves on
screen and a dvd keepsake for their
parents, editing everything on pc.

Vado USB Video Recorder

We now have two of these, easy to use,
video recorders available for loan from the
Hive. There are no tapes to worry about. Just
record and then plug directly into the pc usb.
Use Windows Movie Maker to capture and
edit the video and then export your finished
video for use on the Moodle. You could also
use it as a webcam or voice recorder.
Come down to our office in the Hive and we
will show you our range of digital cameras
and video recorders.
