Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus,
Corpus Christi.
The first reading tells how Melchizedek, king of Jerusalem,
comes to greet Abraham. He brings an offering of bread and wine to
Abraham and proclaims a blessing over him. in our Christian tradition that bread and wine
prefigures the bread and wine of the Eucharist.
The text from 1 Corinthians is the EARLIEST account written of the institution of the
Eucharist. The words of Jesus incorporate the same process as mentioned in the Old Testament
sacrifices; the feeding of the 5,000; the scene at Emmaus He took bread offered it to God
blessed it broke it take and eat do this as a memorial of me. This is the same formula and
actions we have in the Mass.
Jesus still feeds, nourishes and sustains us today with his own life his own body and
blood. What a treasure we have available to us! When people ask, why should I go to Mass?
There is nothing there for me. It is so repetitive or even boring and all the other excuses and
fine rhetoric How sad! Here we have God giving himself to us feeding us in Word and
Eucharist. Let us pray today for an even greater appreciation of the Mass. We gather together
as families, individuals, groups of all kinds and yet can be so united in the one great act of
worship, praise and nourishment. What a treasure and privilege!
PARACHUTE JUMP: The awesome day is very near. Wednesday 1st June is the Big Day!
Thanks to all who have been sponsoring my crazy jump. I thought a supporters group may
come to the airfield in Cambridgeshire (North London Club), but as it is first come first served to
jump, I will need to leave at 5.30am to get in the queue. (Who would believe there are so many
other crazy people). I will keep you posted on progress!
SR CLARA: This is Sr. Claras last weekend before she leaves for her sabbatical. She
deserves a break to recharge the batteries. She will have a months retreat, a bit of study and a
holiday with her family. We thank Sr Clara for her ministry here in St John Vianney as well as the
ministry in her own Verbum Dei Fraternity. We wish her well during her time away and look
forward to her return to us in September, please God.
In the meantime, Sisters Monica and Susana will be present after Masses on the weekends
to make contact with parishioners and help deal with various inquiries.
THANKS to all who participated in the Justice and Peace celebration for Barbara Kentish.
We had a lovely celebration last Friday evening.
Have a nice week! Fr Joe
