Development of the current Tanjung Priok Port will increase its capacity, both in passengers
and goods. Containers, dry and liquid bulks, cars, are examples on the most profitable
commodities in Tanjung Priok. As development goes, so does goods traffic. Unfortunately, the
development of Port Tanjung Priok is not a simple task to do. Many related aspects, if not
carefully planned, might hold up the development.
First, access road that is capable providing the transportations needs is necessary. Road
towards and from the port should accommodate trucks that carry goods. The road should be
properly made to stand heavy loads for long period and large enough to handle the traffic
volume. The road should also be separated from the city road since trucks can hold down the
traffic and may cause slower turn-time for the trucks. Rail track to the port is also a good choice
to carry goods, providing it can release some traffic on the road.
Secondly, a challenge on developing port is the power needs. Longer operation time and
more equipments means more power. They have to make sure the port has suffiecient power
supply to support the port activity. Ideas on using renewable power is also interesting, following
the prior Teluk Lamong Terminal, Surabaya that uses more energy efficient equipment for their
port operation.
Third, market and industrial availability. Ships sail around the world to trade, therefore to
make Jakarta one of the main hubs we need to have the market demands for international goods.
Our industries should also be competitive and make quality products to be exported. So when
ships arrived to deliver goods, they also sail back fully loaded with our products.
Fourth, behavior of Indonesians who are not familiar, in the use of container. One of the
developments of Tanjung Priok is build container terminals so that the capacity of container is
increase. However, Indonesia has not familiar of containerization yet. As we can see, theres
many bulk truck where the loading and unloading process should be done in Tanjung Priok Port.

This condition resulted more dwelling time where as the purpose of developing port is reduce the
dwelling time. Also, the bulk truck cause the congestion in Tanjung Priok access road.
Last, as the International hub port, Tanjung Priok should be the center gravity of global
trading. Malacca Straits, the center gravity of global trading by ship, has distance 526 mil from
Tanjung Priok Port so the ship need more time about a day to reach Tanjung Priok Port. The
more time spent means more costs. So its the challenge of Tanjung Priok Port to be more
competitive with the nearest international hub port, Port of Singapore Authority (PSA).
In conclude, developing Tanjung Priok Port is a good news for Indonesia to compete with
other country, especially ASEAN. Even though, Tanjung Priok Port need several aspects to be
develop to maximalize the use of Tanjung Priok Port.
