1. Basic P91 Server Setup

This chapter identifies the basic parts of the P91 (Dell PowerEdge 2800 server with Intel Xeon
processor) and explains how to determine which interface cards and internal/external drives are
used with each P91 server.
This chapter contains all the information necessary to set up the P91 server.
The P91 servers are shipped preconfigured from Invensys with all cards, internal hard drives, and
Windows Server 2003 operating system installed. Before performing any procedures described in
this document, you must determine the following information about your P91 server:
Type of software installed (process engineering station or process operator station)
Number of monitors used with the P91 server
Amount of RAM installed
Size of internal system hard drive
Size of internal Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) or Redundant Array of
Independent Disks (RAID) hard drive
Size of tape drive (if present)
Type of Ethernet card(s) (if present)
Available I/O interface cards (if present).

Determining Your P91 Servers Configuration

You can determine basic information about your P91 server (described at the beginning of this
chapter) from the P91 servers P-Code.
There are two P-Code labels on the P91 server; one on the top (tower) or one on the right-side
panel (rack mount).
A P-Code is a production code used to identify a machine and its hardware configuration. The PCode can be found on a label on the top (tower) or on the right-side panel (rack mount) of the
P91 server. The label is illustrated in Figure 1-1. The information found on this label lets you
identify:
P-Code for your P91 server
Style type (A)

Touchscreen Cabling Connections

Some GCIO setups use touchscreens and some do not. USB touchscreens do not require a
GCIO. The GCIO address for touchscreen is 2 for the primary GCIO. However, for non-touchscreen, the GCIO addresses are P for the primary and S for the secondary GCIO. The primary
GCIO connection can be configured as either touchscreen or non-touchscreen, and the secondary
GCIO connection is configured independently as non-touchscreen.
The optional touchscreen feature is available with 20-inch flat panel LCD monitor.
Proceed as follows:
1. Make the cable connections as shown in Figure 1-6 or Figure 1-7.
2. If you are using a GCIO module, locate the address selector switches at the rear of the
GCIO interface module (Figure 1-6).
3. Determine, from the human interface software configuration information for your
system, the address associated with the touchscreen:
Primary touchscreen GCIO address = 2
Primary non-touchscreen GCIO address = P
Secondary address = S for non-touchscreen.
4. Using the chart printed on the underside of the GCIO interface module as a guide, set
the address switches for the required address.
If you are configuring a local USB touchscreen or a serial touchscreen, make the connections
shown in Figure 1-6. Refer to Table 1-7 for descriptions and lengths of the cables in each cable
group referenced in the diagram.
If you are using a remote USB touchscreen as an input device, install the P0972NZ USB extender
kit, as shown in Figure 1-7. Refer to Table 1-9 for descriptions and lengths of the cables in each
cable group referenced in the diagram.
! WARNING
Do not attempt a touchscreen calibration from a remote client. To prevent remote
client sessions from requesting a touchscreen calibration after login, calibrate the
touchscreen on the server at all screen resolutions remote clients may use.
On the server head with a touchscreen, change the servers screen resolution to
1024x768 and perform a touchscreen calibration from the Touchware software.
Change the server screen resolution to 800x600 and perform a touchscreen calibration from the Touchware software. Perform this step for every screen resolution that
remote clients may use. Doing so prevents the Touchware software from requesting
a calibration on the remote desktop clients.
You can also check the box next to Do not remind me when display settings
change and click OK the first time the Touch Screen Calibration Needed popup
appears.

Multi-Port Serial Card to Modbus Connection

NOTE

Some versions of I/A Series software may not support Modbus connections.
The Multi-Port Serial card provides 4-serial COM lines for external hardware. A Multi-Port serial
cable (part number P0922MZ) must be connected to the Multi-Port Serial card to provide the
physical connections for the additional COM lines. The multi-port serial card requires a driver;
refer to Installing the PE2800 Multi-Port Serial Card Driver (Equinox SST4PU) on page 57.
If the Multi-Port Serial card must connect to a Modbus unit, the Modbus 9-pin to 9-pin
connector (P0912VN) cable must attach to the P2 connector on the serial cable, as shown in
Figure 1-18.
For sites requiring greater distances between the Modbus unit and the P91 server, use modems
between the P2 connector on the Multi-Port serial cable and the Modbus 9-pin-to-9-pin connector cable.
Figure 1-19 shows the pinout from the Multiple Port Serial card to the Modbus device.
NOTE

Plug your Modbus device into the Multi-Port Serial card defined by your system
configuration.

NOTE

The P91 server does not work with the Command Center side-arm mounted monitors, P0930DH and P0930WG.
The dual- and quad-head video cards require a driver; refer to Configuring the Video Driver on
page 59.
When you add a multi-head video card to a P91 server, you can now use the integrated video output as well as the multi-head video cards. This allows you the flexibility of using one to five video
displays at a time.
Instructions for connecting the monitors to the multi-head video cards vary depending on
whether you are installing a dual- or quad-head video card.
First, you must choose how you want to position the monitors in your final configuration.
Figure 1-20 provides an illustration of the typical monitor configurations. (For additional examples of dual and quad head monitor configurations, refer to Configuring the Video Driver on
page 59.) Assign each monitor a number as shown in Figure 1-20.

Integrated NIC/Ethernet Card Connection

In an I/A Series Version 8.x control network, P91 servers are connected via Intel copper Ethernet
NICs or Allied Telesyn fiber-optic Ethernet NICs.
The copper or fiber NICs installed in the P91 server connect the workstation to the Ethernet
switches in The Mesh control network. It is recommended that you connect the workstation to
two different switches in The Mesh to provide redundant data signal paths and eliminate single
points of failure.

Ethernet Connections from P91 Server to Remote Clients

Client stations can access the P91 server using the TCP/IP protocol on either the I/A Series control network or a secondary network. Figure 1-24 shows the connections to the P91 server over a
secondary Ethernet network running TCP/IP protocol.

Alarm Manager Dual-Head or Quad-Head Video Configurations

By default, the Alarm Manager chooses its window size based on the size of the overall desktop. In
a dual or quad-headed configuration, this choice may not be optimal.
After I/A Series software is installed there are two methods that can be used to change the size and
position of the Alarm Manager:

1.
2.
3.

Use the graphical Alarm/Display Manager configurator, which is described in Workstation Alarm Management (B0700AT) or
Manually edit the Alarm Manager configuration file which is described as follows:
Save a backup of the following file: D:\usr\fox\customer\alarms\cfg\am_def.cfg
Open the original am_def.cfg file in an editor (such as Wordpad or vi).
Corresponding to each type of Alarm Manager window is a line that contains the
string: WinSizPos.
These lines determine the size and position of each window, and can be edited to provide a more desirable layout. Table 3-3 provides the parameters available to you to use
in this string.
For example, in a configuration with four heads arranged in a 2x2 array, a good choice
is to make the windows quarter screen. To do this, change every WinSizPos line to
QUR for quarter screen, upper right. You can search and replace these settings as long
as case sensitivity is on.
