How to Turn Windows 10 into a WiFi Hotspot

Ayo Isaiah

29th Aug 2015

Windows 10 allows you to start a Wi-Fi hotspot on your computer, allowing you to share your
wireless connection with several devices. This could be a useful thing if you are restricted to just
one device per person on the Wi-Fi network or perhaps if you have only one password.
Its a hidden feature, so there is no on/off switch to access this. However, there are several ways
to achieve this.

Set Up Wi-Fi Hotspot Using the Command Prompt

This method does not require you to download any third-party application. You can easily set up a
Wi-Fi hotspot using the built-in tools in Windows.
First, you need to open the command prompt with administrator privileges. Press the Windows +
X key on your keyboard and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the pop-up menu.

Now we will create the hotspot. Simply enter the following command and press the Enter key:

netshwlansethostednetworkmode=allowssid=maketecheasierkey=password

The SSID is the name of the WiFi connection and can be changed to anything you want. The KEY
is the password and can be changed, also but bear in mind that it has to be at least eight

characters.
Next you need to start the following command to start the WiFi hotspot:

netshwlanstarthostednetwork

Your WiFi hotspot should be activated and usable. You can check its status in the network and
sharing center of your control panel.

You can now connect your devices to the hotspot and use the same WiFi connection without
using third-party tools.

You can turn off the hotspot when not in use with the following command:

netshwlanstophostednetwork

Set Up WiFI Hotspot with Connectify Hotspot

If youre not a fan of the above method, there are several applications that you can download and
use to share your WiFi connection with other devices.
One of the more popular ones is Connectify Hotspot. Its free version basically does the same
thing with the Command Prompt method, but you can turn your computer to a wired router or WiFi
repeater with a subscription.

Once the application is installed, click the Try it out button to start using the tool. Your hotspot
will be assigned a default name and password, but you can change this. Keep in mind that with
the free version your hotspot name must start with Connectify. For example: Connectify-me or
Connectify-mte.

Make sure to choose the correct Internet connection to share and set your password. Once done,
you can start the hotspot by clicking the Start Hotspot button.
Now you can connect any other device to your Connectify Hotspot as you would with any other
WiFi hotspot.
Let us know your preferred method of creating a WiFi hotspot on your Windows PC. If you have
any alternatives to Connectify, dont forget to share them in the comments section below.

Basic question: Will Hotspot take the place of my EXISTING WI-FI connection? Can I
cancel my existing modem connection that supplies WI-FI ? In other words, will
Hotspot act as a modem on my pc?

I guess it is so obvious to you that your computer needs to be wireless for any wi hotspot to
work, that you omitted to mention it? But it is worth mentioning, for those who are a lot less
computer savvy than you because I am a lot more computer savvy than most of my family and
friends but it still took me a few minutes to realise it!

It looks like Wills question wasnt answered. The password is whatever you typed in
after the key= in the rst part of this process. That is also the password any user of
a mobile device connecting to the hotspot will have to enter to connect.

I dont believe I have any use for this but it looked interesting. I used the command prompt
option and created a hotspot named techcontrol. It does show up but there is no network
access and I cant gure out why. I do know that the hotspot does not start back up when the pc
is restarted. Starting and stopping the hotspot is cumbersome if you have to use the command
prompt. I opened Notepad and entered the string netsh wlan start hostednetwork and saved it
to my desktop as Start Techcontrol.bat. I then entered the stop string netsh wlan stop
hostednetwork and saved it to my desktop.as Stop Techcontrol.bat. I am surprised you didnt
suggest using a batch le for this purpose. The batch le to start the hotspot could also be used
in startup to automatically start it on a reboot. If anyone can think of a reason why there is no
network access displayed for my hotspot I would appreciate your reply. Thank you.

Before you press enter after you paste the command word, replace password with your own
pass word. example. key=password should read key=12345678. Then 12345678 will then be the
password you will connect your handsets with. I hope this will help. It worked for me.

To access the internet you need to start the virtual network then open properties on the virtual
adapter and click the sharing tab. click the rst box only, to share and ensure the second in
unticked. ok and close. Do not make any changes to the normal wi adapter. To retain this
command it is important when setting the intial:
(Netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=XXXXXXXX key=XXXXXXXXXX
https://www.maketecheasier.com/windows10wifihotspot/

14/21

10/05/2016

HowtoTurnWindows10intoaWiFiHotspot

keyUsage=persistent)
Note the addition of keyUsage=persistent. This ensures the instruction is retained in the registry
on exit. The use of .bat les are an excellent way of speeding up the connection and ensuring
accuracy.
You may wish to use this as a range extender for an existing network. Please note all SSID`s
must be the same together with the password. If to have a multi worded SSID for the network
this will need to be changed as the cmd does not accept word spaces. This can be overcome by
using hyphens.
I hope this is of help.

Sorry for the slip up I was incorrect with the adapters. the adapter to change is the

I was facing the same problem of not able to turn windows 10 into a wi hotspot. After doing
short period research, i was able to solve this problem. So follow the instructions stated below in
order to turn your windows 10 to a wi hotspot :
1.Right click on windows and open command prompt as admin.
2.Type netsh wlan show drivers.(Checking the compatibility of system)
2.Check the row showing Hosted Network Supported : Yes
If it yes then follow the following steps:
a.Type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=id key=nokey
b.Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Now press windows+R
00)Type ncpa.cpl(To check the network adapter settings)
01)Right click the active internet connection and select properties,go to sharing tab.Check the
rst option and use virtually connected hosted network(local area connection).Uncheck the
second option.
Now just connect any of you devices.
