Blending in
A guiding principle of successful
architecture is creating buildings that
sit comfortably in their environment.
This home was built on a high
point of the land in order to capture
the best of views from every angle,
and clearing the 500sqm site was
a mammoth undertaking.
We had real challenges getting
machinery in and, in some ways,
I felt it was the land biting back at the
changes I was making, says Mark.

Style the space
Renovating a rental property means
putting aside personal taste to create
a neutral backdrop anyone can live in.
Maria chose white cabinets to make
the most of the increased natural light,
teaming them with dark stone-look
benchtops to create a space that wont
date. The black subway tiles used for
a splashback add a designer element.
To appeal to potential tenants, she
injected colour into the monochrome
room through accessories.

Quality check
Go for the best quality paint you can
for your budget. High-end paints are
more concentrated with finer pigments
and higher-grade resins. You will end
up with a better-looking finish and
fewer coats will be required.

varnished the sleepers, which was
the lengthiest part of the project.
He then used a biscuit joiner to
join the sleepers together, forming
the benchtop. The benchtop was
then screwed onto the cabinets
using a bracket kit.
The whole unit is very heavy,
but I built it like this so that if I ever
need to move it, it will come apart in
two pieces, says Tom.
Finally, he added the wheels to
complete the look, finishing off the
whole project in a single weekend.

Tidy cords
Using extension

a real hassle. They tangle all

That way they wont come

POTTING BULBS
Planting up a pot or window box with
bulbs is easy and rewarding. Here are
a few tips to help them thrive.
CHOOSE a container that has very
good drainage and avoid placing
a saucer underneath it.
USE a quality bulb potting mix.
POSITION the bulbs no closer than
30-50mm to the container sides or
they will get too hot.

Design ideas
With their stunning
displays at times when
colour and flowers may otherwise
be in short supply, bulbs can be
used to great effect.
To get you started, here are
a few ways to plant them.
A solid backdrop

impact of a small

and also provides
the necessary
wind protection.

The roots of mandarin
trees spread to the
outer perimeter of the
branches, like all citrus,
so water and feed there.

Dwarf varieties
For tiny backyards and
balconies, there are some
great dwarf mandarin choices that
can be grown in large tubs.
They are often smaller-growing
versions of larger varieties. Ask at
your local nursery for advice on
suitability and whats available.
SELECT a pot with a diameter of
at least 400mm. You can increase
the size of the pot as the tree grows.

Yellow leaves
CAUSE Lack of nutrients.
SPOT IT The leaves turn yellow
and the tree will begin to crop
poorly if left untreated.
FIX IT Focus on improving the
magnesium available to the tree.
Apply Burnets Sequestron as an
initial nutrient boost.
For a longer-term solution,
dissolve two tablespoons of
Epsom Salts in 10 litres of water
and apply around the plant after
dampening the soil first.
