Fault code
FMI 3

FMI 4

Short circuit to battery voltage.

Short circuit to framework.

Conditions for fault code:

The current at EB25, exceeds 3.9 A.

If the pre-heating fuse has blown SID70 FMI 4 is set.

Possible cause:
Short circuit in pre-heating relay.

Conditions for fault code:

The voltage at EB25 is below 30% of the battery
voltage (0,30 * U bat).

Reaction from the engine control unit:

Fault code is set.
Yellow lamp requested.

Possible cause:
Short circuit to framework in the cabling between the
pre-heating relay and the engine control unit.

Noticeable external symptoms:

Yellow lamp lights.
The pre-heating relay does not activate.
White smoke during cold start.
Starting problem in cold weather.

Reaction from the engine control unit:

Fault code is set.
Red light requested.

Appropriate check:
Active FMI
284503 MID 128 PID 45 Preheater relay, check
page 4.
Inactive FMI
VCADS Pro-test: 170043 Fault codes, test mode.
If the fault code becomes active during test Fault
codes, test mode, fault trace according to Active FMI
If the fault code does not become active, try activating
it during a test drive. In order to fault trace, the fault
code must be active.

Noticeable external symptoms:

Red lamp lights.
The inlet air is hot.
The pre-heating relay cannot be switched off.
Appropriate check:
Active FMI
284503 MID 128 PID 45 Preheater relay, check
page 4.
Inactive FMI
VCADS Pro-test: 170043 Fault codes, test mode.
If the fault code becomes active during the test Fault
codes, test mode, fault trace according to Active FMI
If the fault code does not become active, try activating
it during a test drive. In order to fault trace, the fault
code must be active.

FMI 5
Break in the circuit.

Conditions for fault code:

The voltage at EB25 is between 30% and 60% of the
battery voltage (0,3 0,6* U bat).
Possible cause:
Break in the cabling between the pre-heating relay and
the engine control unit.
Fault in the pre-heater relay.
Reaction from the engine control unit:
Fault code is set.
Yellow lamp requested.
Noticeable external symptoms:
Yellow lamp lights.
The pre-heating does not become activated.
White smoke during cold start.
Starting problem in cold weather.
Appropriate check:
Active FMI

Fault code information

Fault code information, see MID 128 PID 45 Preheater
relay page 2.

NOTE!

Active/inactive fault code

Certain fault codes become inactive when the
engine is turned off. Start the engine to check if the
fault code is still inactive or becomes active when
the engine is running.
Connector block
Always check that there is no oxidation or damage
to the connector pins. Also check the pin clamping
force. For more information, see service information
group 371.
If the connector block is fault-free, reconnect it. Check
if the fault code is still set. If a fault code is set,
continue fault tracing by following the instructions.
Following any repair of the connector
Refit the connector. Check if the fault code has
become inactive.
If a fault code is still set, continue fault tracing by
following the instructions.

Measurements
Note: If any of the following cable values are incorrect,
this could be the cause of the component breakdown.
Also check to see if any of the component values are
incorrect.

Component and Cabling:

Conditions:
Resistance measurement using a multimeter.
Start key in stop position.
Component connected.
Measurement over the component.
