This book is excellent for learning usable arpeggios in your soloing.

These are
not your typical sweep arpeggios. These arpeggios use a combination of alternate
picking with hammers and pulls. They sound great when used in a rock or fusion
context. The fingerings are very accessible and they sound great even when playe
d at slower tempos.
What I love about this book is that your playing will improve after the first ex
ercise. The way the exercises are designed with the hammers and pulls make the a
rpeggios sound really smooth without sounding like you are just running an exerc
ise. You will be able to insert these arpeggios into your solos immediately.
Another thing I love about this book is that these arpeggios can be played fast
but they will not make you sound like a typical shredder. These arpeggios sound
great in any context. I've tried them over blues, jazz, country, and rock settin
gs and they work great. They especially sound great when you use the arpeggios a
s substitutions instead of just outlining the current chord.
The book is set up in a progressive format so that you start off playing arpeggi
os up and down in a single position and then the following exercises have you co
nnecting different shapes all over the neck which will allow you to have nice lo
ng and flowing lines.
At the end of each section are soloing etudes that demonstrate how to put the ar
peggios together to create a long solo over a chord progression. I wish more boo
ks were set up this way. These etudes act as comprehensive studies that allows y
ou to practice all aspects of the technique without having to cycle through hund
reds of exercises. They also give you a goal to work towards so that you know on
ce you've mastered something.
There are also etudes at the end that include concepts from the other books in t
he Fluid Soloing series that demonstrate how to incorporate pentatonics, Hendrix
like double stops, and wide interval licks with your arpeggios. This will help
round out your playing so that you're not just playing arpeggios all of the time
. These studies were very helpful to me in showing me how to put a good solo tog
ether that is varied and interesting.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to break out of the typical "blu
es box" type of playing and get into changes based playing. But be prepared to p
ut some practice time in, these arpeggios are definitely not for beginners.
I have the other books in the Fluid Soloing series as well and they are equally
as great. These books are not something you can whip through in a few days or ev
en in a few months for that matter. Anyone who learned all of the material in th
ese books would be a monster on the guitar.
