BARE ROOT PLANTS

Our experience shows that plants
transplant most successfully when they are
dormant. Accordingly, we dig our plants
from outdoor beds and ship them AprilMay and October. Most of our plants are
at least one growing season old. Many are
two years or older. We are among the few
still employing this production method,
which is labor-intensive but plant-friendly.
All of our plants are grown for sale, never
wild-dug. Since digging of wild plants can
deplete and destroy local native plant
populations, it is important to be aware of
the origin of commercially sold plants.

We offer seeds from nearly 700 native

species, shipping year-round. Growing
from seed takes longer and requires more
patience, faith and follow-up maintenance
than transplanting bare-root or potted
plants, but, one big advantage of using
seeds is affordability, especially when
planting larger areas.

Native Gardeners Companion 2016

Observers estimate that there were about one billion

Monarch butterflies in colonies at their over-wintering sites in Mexico back in the winter of 1996-97.
By the winter of 2013-14 the count had plummeted
to about 33 million. This great decline was caused
by loss of habitat due to urban sprawl, agricultural
practices, development and cropland conversion
across the Monarchs migration range as well as in
their Mexican winter quarters. If that rate of loss
continued, we would eventually lose the migration
of this species and our children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren would be unable to experience
the lovely Monarch butterfly.
Happily, the winter of 2014-15 brought a slight increase, up to about 55.77 million Monarchs. Since
then, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has teamed
up with conservation partners to launch a campaign
to save the Monarch butterfly. Monarch Watch, the
National Wildlife Federation and many local and national groups are chipping in to help. This can only
be successful if millions of Americans get involved.
Communities can make a difference by planting
milkweed. Many schools, businesses, and residences
are getting involved. You, too, can help.

Once very common, Common Milkweed used to
be in every farm field, ditch and disturbed area.
It is one of the easiest and fastest-to-establish
Milkweeds and planting more can counter threats
to our Monarchs. Other native pollinators will also
benefit during its long and fragrant bloom time.

Growing public awareness and ongoing media attention provide hope that the decline can be turned
around. We feel that this year the numbers may
double again. Monarch Watch had more orders
for Monarch tags this year than at any time since
2003. Tagging data sheets are coming in and the
numbers of tag records (butterflies tagged) appear
to be at least twice that of last year. The number
of fall roosts reported to Journey North are better
than in any year since 2010, when there were about
198.6 million. There have been no indications that
the Monarchs have encountered unfavorable conditions while moving into or through Mexico. Things
are looking up and will continue to improve if we all
pitch in and help. Please do your part and PLANT
MILKWEED.

STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL FOR GERMINATION CODE C:

USING SAND

1. GATHER SUPPLIES. Place a small amount of stratifying medium into a

bowl. We are using ~1/3 cup silica stratification sand (p.36) with ~1/8 oz
seed.

SEEDING TRAYS

1. USING A CALENDAR AND OUR GERMINATION CODES, CALCULATE THE

DATE TO START COLD, MOIST STRATIFICATON PRE-TREATMENT. Rinse or
complete a short soak. Pour into a coffee filter, paper towel or fine screen
to drain.

GERMINATION CODES AND INSTRUCTIONS

Seed should germinate upon sowing

in a warm location. No pre-treatment necessary
other than cold, dry storage (also called dry cold
stratification). Seed purchased from Prairie Moon
has been stored under these conditions.

Hot water treatment: Bring water to a

boil, remove from heat, pour over seeds, and soak
in a warm place for 24 hours prior to planting.

C
Starting from Seed
The seeds of many native plants have builtin dormancy mechanisms that protect them
from germinating before killing frosts or
in times of drought. In the wild, seeds will
lie dormant until the proper conditions for
growth occur. But in cultivation, the successful gardener must become familiar with
several simple pre-sowing seed treatment
methods which will unlock the dormancy
mechanism and stimulate quicker, more consistent germination.
We have developed the following seed germination codes to help you successfully grow
the native seed sold in our catalog. These seed
treatment suggestions have been compiled
from our own experience, available literature,
and feedback from other growers and customers. These are only suggestions and not
the definitive source of germination information. If your experience reveals successful
methods other than these, please let us know.
Until you are ready to plant or apply pre-sowing treatment, seed should be stored under
refrigeration (3340F) or in a cool, dry place.
Avoid rapid or frequent changes in temperature or humidity and protect against rodents.
Sow seeds shallowly and keep seedlings carefully weeded. Periodic watering is helpful to
establish seedlings. If seed does not germinate
the first year, dont give up; germination may
occur the second year or even later.

GERMINATION CODES AND INSTRUCTIONS

2. ADD WATER. 1 to 2 teaspoons is all we needed for this amount of sand.

3. MIX ONLY ENOUGH WATER TO ALLOW MEDIUM TO FORM INTO A BALL.

2. ARRANGE SEED IN A SINGLE LAYER AND ALLOW ALL EXCESS WATER TO

DRAIN OFF.

3. FOLD SEED LOOSELY INTO THE COFFEE FILTER OR PAPER TOWEL TO

ALLOW FOR WEEKLY SPOT CHECKS. The seed and paper should be damp
but not wet.

Toll-Free (866) 417-8156

Seeds germinate after a period of cold, moist

stratification. PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to
stratify if you are fall planting or using a seed drill.
Also, do not use this method if you are planting a
seed mix and cannot keep the site moist. Mix seeds
with equal amounts or more of damp sand, vermiculite or other sterile medium (moistbut not so wet
that water will squeeze out of a handful). We use silica sand (purchased at a building supply center) for
small quantities. For large quantities we use coarse
grade vermiculite. Place mixture in a labeled, sealed
plastic bag and store in a refrigerator (3338F).
Stratify for the days indicated in parentheses. If two
months (C(60)) of this cold storage before planting
is normally required to break the dormancy of these
seeds, one month may work for many species if
time is a constraint. Some seeds may sprout in the
storage bag if moist stratified too long. If sprouting occurs, plant immediately. Another method
of breaking dormancy for species requiring moist
stratification is to sow seeds outdoors in the fall so
they may overwinter.

Seeds are very small or need light to naturally break dormancy and germinate. Surface sow.
4. ADD YOUR SEED. Our package label will indicate the suggested number
of days for artificial stratification.

Seeds germinate most successfully in cool soil.

Sow seeds in late fall (after hard frost) or early spring.

Seeds need scarification. For spring planting, Prairie Moon scarifies these seeds before shipping.
Seeds for fall or frost planting are not scarified to prevent premature germination and winter kill.

Legume, Rhizobium Inoculum. Prairie Moon

includes genus-specific inoculum with legume seed free
of charge when available. Inoculum aids in the fixation
of atmospheric nitrogen and improves the long-term
health of native plant communities.

INOCULUM FOR LEGUMES

Choose from 17 different rhizobial inoculum strains. Legume seed purchased from Prairie Moon Nursery comes
with inoculum at no additional charge. Small packet

Hemiparasitic species that needs a host plant.

Good hosts for many parasitic species include low-growing grasses and sedges.

In order to germinate, seeds need a warm,

moist period followed by a cold, moist period. Mix seeds
with sterile medium, place mixture in a labeled, sealed
plastic bag and store in warm (about 80F) place for 60
90 days. Then place in refrigerator (3338F) for 6090
days before sowing. Or, sow outdoors and allow one full
year for germination.

Seeds need a cold, moist period followed by a

warm, moist period followed by a 2nd cold, moist period.

5. REFRIGERATE THE SEED MIXTURE IN A SEALED PLASTIC BAG MARKED

WITH START AND FINISH DATES. Check periodically so that the mixture
does not dry out. If premature sprouting occurs, plant immediately.

Plant fresh seed or keep moist.

Refrigerate until planting or starting other treatment.

M
?

Best planted outdoors in the fall.

Not sure. Your input would be of interest to us.

4. A DRY PAPER TOWEL ADDED TO YOUR LABELED RESEALABLE BAG will

help to maintain even moisture while pulling excessive moisture away. Do
not allow the stratification medium to completely dry out or stay soggy
enough to rot.

5. PLACE THE SEALED BAG IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR (NOT FREEZER)

and monitor weekly, or as needed, until it is time to remove for sowing.
Replace coffee filter or paper towel often; repeat from step 1. Once seed
has completed the recommended stratification period, or if excessive early
sprouting occurs, plant immediately. (Seed Starting Trays, p.37)

Highly recommended for home landscaping; it

makes a nice border with other natives like Wild
Geranium (left) and is deer-resistant. This fern
has black, wiry stems and delicate, airy green
fronds that reach 1 across. They grow well in the
same environment favored by most hostas.

Reddish stalks reach heights of 8 in the spring.

The early foliage dies back late spring before the
creamy-white flowers appear in June or July.
It is popular among foragers, who will often
call them Ramps. If you do forage for them,
remember to harvest sustainably.

This petite Iris has blooms that range from violet

to nearly white. Although it has a short blooming
period, it readily spreads once established,
forming colonies with small sword-shaped
leaves. It grows best in full to partial shade
but can also tolerate full sun and drier soils
associated with many sunny locations.

SPRING BARE
ROOT PLANTS

We are among the few still employing a bare-root

production method, which is labor-intensive but
plant friendly. Properly transplanting dormant
bare-root plants soon after receipt is critical to
their success. We furnish planting instructions
and photo illustrations of proper planting depth
and orientation with every order to help your
new plants thrive. If questions arise, please
contact us for assistance.

Dig a hole 2x the diameter of the spread of the roots.

(Reference the photo included with your
order to ensure optimum placement.)

Arrival of shipment. Plant as soon as possible or store in

refrigerator short term.

Firm soil as you go, maintaining root spread and

proper depth. Water thoroughly. (Gloves, p.38)

Remove weeds from the planting area.

(Soil Knife, p.38)

Mark the spot with a plant tag or stake. Permanent

mulch of 1-3 inches will supress weeds, moderate soil
temperature and retain moisture. Leave bare soil where
the plant will emerge. (Garden Tags, p.36)

your back door, as shown above in one
of many photos shared by Eric. In his fifth
season of enhancing his small farmstead
near Toledo, Ohio, hes created, in the
midst of agricultural fields, a rich oasis,
offering sanctuary for insects, birds,
amphibians and more. Says Eric, There
is hardly anything in this world that puts
a bigger grin on my face than looking at
natives in a spot that used to be mowed! I
pinch myself and smile all the time.

PHONY?
Every spring we hear from many
plant-lovers, seeking the bright purpleto-white, phlox-like wildflowers that
have appeared suddenly along roadsides and woodland edges. Commonly
mistaken for native phlox, these early
bloomers actually are Dames Rocket
(Hesperis matronalis), a non-native,
invasive member of the Mustard family. Their four-petaled blossoms set them
apart from native phlox, which have five
petals.

Imported from Eurasia in the 1600s,

Dames Rocket, like most introduced
invasive plants, lacks natural predators and diseases in North America. It
thrives in most environments and is a
prolific self-seeder and fast-grower. It
can enter waterways, quickly overtaking
native plant communities as it successfully competes for light and moisture.
Its recent spread has been accelerated by
its inclusion in wildflower seed mixes
sold commercially. Beware of nurseries
that sell this so-called wild phlox. They
must be unaware of its negative impact
or the need for truly native wildflowers.

Our Stand
on Cultivars
The qualities of native plants that we
lovetheir durability, beauty, biological
value to other speciesall are products
of thousands of years of natural selection. The survivors define the species
through their ability to adapt to conditions of their native habitat, co-evolving
along with native wildlife.
Given the burgeoning popularity of native plants in recent years, it was inevitable that some plant breeders would
begin to tweak aspects of their forms
and functions. The large horticultural
marketing gurus demand product uniformity as they prepare their industrialized-native plants for the mega-chain
garden centers. Propagating plants to
select for specific characteristics, such
as flower size, leaf color or compactness
of growth, yields cultivated varieties, or
cultivars, which can reliably reproduce
the targeted variation but reduce the
ecological value and genetic diversity of
the original.
These nativars, which usually sport descriptive and colorful names after their
botanical name, are now widely available. Buyers who are attracted by their
splashy features may fail to consider the
unintended consequences of the variations. Changes in blossom size and color can confuse or deprive nectaring and

In restoration work and native landscaping, we believe that alien species, naturalized species and cultivars should be
avoided, particularly when they might
contaminate native gene pools.
With the ever-widening array of true native plants available, why degrade the
environment by displacing them with
lower-value species?

The past year kept all of our nursery staff

very busy, meeting the needs of customers who ordered native plants and seeds
at unprecedented levels. Many new faces
joined our field crew as we extended our
plantings and built a new greenhouse
and packing shed to expand our plant
production. The typical seasonal lulls
that weve traditionally experienced in
deep summer and deep winter seemed
especially short this year. As we have in
each of our 33 years, we continued to
learn from our own growing experiences
and from those shared by you about our
ongoing adventures with native plants
from backyard and boulevard gardens to
restoration fields.

(neo-nih-CAH-tin-oids) are systemic chemicals, which are absorbed

into the plants vascular system,
leaving the entire plant toxic to both
target and non-target insects. This
class of insecticides is particularly
harmful to bees.
Prairie Moon has never used these
insecticides and is proudly neonicotinoid-FREE. We have also confirmed that our partnering seed and
plant producers do not use this persistent and harmful class of chemicals.

Also called Carolina Rose, it is a fairly lowgrowing shrub with very attractive flowers
followed by equally-stunning fall rose hips.

The Eastern Wahoo is an excellent small tree for

shady, medium-wet to medium soil locations. It is
a member of the Bittersweet (Celastrus) family and
the attractive red spring flowers and red fall berries
provide a food source for many native insects and
birds.

The female produces the ornamental berries, but

a male is needed for pollination; both male and
female should be grown semi-close to each other to
get the ornamental fruit that many desire.

An attractive fall-blooming, low-maintenance

shrub that grows best in part shade and mediumwet, slightly acidic soils. The yellow flowers
are one of the last to appear in fall and are very
fragrant.

A low-maintenance lawn alternative

Eco-Grass
PLANT EARLY SPRING!
Early Spring is a great time to
plant Eco-Grass, when it has
the advantage of early-season
soil moisture.
Eco-Grass is a blend of fine fescues
and is an excellent choice for borders
adjacent to native plantings, or as a
responsible alternative to an energyintensive conventional turf lawn.
This versatile mix establishes quickly,
growing into a f lowing carpet that
can go unmowed or be mowed to a
recommended 3 height occasionally
or frequently, depending on the
application and intended use. EcoGrass grows in most soil types and
sun conditions, thriving in all but the
darkest and wettest settings in clay
or heavy soils. The thin blades of the
fescues and their relatively deep root
systems (4-9) enhance droughtresistance by reducing water loss and
seeking out deeper water reserves.
When Eco-Grass reaches about eight
inches and begins to form seed heads,
it tends to bow or f lop over, which
can add an attractive naturalistic
f low to landscape highlights. Once
34

Toll-Free (866) 417-8156

established, it is durable under

moderate foot traffic if mowed as
a path or lawn. It resists invasion by
filling in well but will not encroach on
neighboring plantings.
Eco-Grass yields big savings as a lawn
alternative by eliminating or reducing
the need for pesticides, fertilizers and
frequent watering or mowing. These
slow-growing fescues establish even
in light or low-nutrient soils and
hold no attraction for lawn grubs,
the problematic larvae that thrive in
shorter-rooted turf grasses.

A cool-season grass mix, Eco-Grass is

best planted on a prepared site from
which competing species have been
removed in early fall or early spring.
Fall plantings have the advantage of
fewer competing weeds. The seeds
can be hand-broadcast or distributed
with a grass-seed spreader and should
be lightly raked in and then watered
well for the first two months, if
needed. Depending upon conditions,
germination can be expected in one
to two weeks. Its cool-season nature
shows in its bright-green luster in

We planted Eco-Grass last fall and are impressed with its quick growth and ability to fill in. It was planted in a
low, uneven area behind our native planting and vegetable garden. During heavy rains this area would fill with
water and was slow to drain. The Eco-Grass absorbs the excess water, therefore solving the problem of standing
water. It looks great, is an excellent backdrop to the prairie and garden, and needs no maintenance.
- Al K., Powell, OH
late autumn, followed by browning in
dormancy and an early spring greenup.

Planting Range

ECO-GRASS - A LAWN ALTERNATIVE

#ECOG

Eco-Grass does not need to over-winter

to break germination inhibitors.
Seeds sown in late fall or winter will
lie dormant until spring. Even sandy
soils can suit it but frequent watering
may be necessary on very dry sites
or in dry seasons until the plants
are established. Once it fills in, EcoGrass is a low-maintenance, attractive
choice for many specific landscaping
needs for home and garden.

Weve found the A.M. Leonard soil knife to

tough roots and a twine-cutting notch that
can double as a bottle opener when in-field
liquid fortification is needed. (includes s/h)

Have used the soil knife for years.

Actually have six of these knives.
My garden is very large and I keep
(or try to) them at stragetic places.
Would be difficult for me to garden
without one of these knives. The
nitrile gloves have been worn for
several years and they are excellent
particularly during times when the
soil is wet and mucky. Both products
are excellent, well-made and worth
the money.

Wildlife need native plants

Bringing Nature Home

By Douglas W. Tallamy (2nd ed.)

This revolutionary book explains the
unbreakable link between native
plants and native wildlife. The core of Tallamys
research is that native insects cannot or will not
eat alien plants. When native plants disappear, the
insects disappear, impoverishing the food source
for birds and other mammals. Gardeners and
restorationists have the power to make a significant
contribution toward sustaining biodiversity.
Valuable appendices in the back of the book such
as: Host Plants of Butterflies and Showy Moths,
and Native plants relatively unpalatable to whitetailed deer. 358 pages

HERBICIDE AS A SITE
PREP METHOD

CULTIVATION AS A SITE
PREP METHOD

We at Prairie Moon take seriously the issue

of agricultural chemical use. We are proud
of our organic farming legacy but we also
view the responsible and judicious use of
herbicides as an effective tool for native
ecosystem establishment.

Site prep done by weeding with hand

tools is best suited to very small areas
such as gardens or planting beds. Any
soil disturbance is followed by more
weed growth, so cultivation needs to be
frequent enough that perennial weeds
dont survive; continue until the end of
the growing season.

We are not experts on herbicide use, so we

are reluctant to give specific instructions.
Always read labels on herbicide products
when working with these chemicals. A
number of new, lower-impact herbicide
formulas are now on the market. Consider
researching the alternative products now
available, such as Phydura All Natural Herbicide (Tool Shed, p.36).
Herbicide is most effective over a full growing season. Depending on the weed problem
on your site, using herbicides as the only
form of site prep for a shorter period of time
can yield less desirable results.

42

Toll-Free (866) 417-8156

If using a roto-tiller for small to medium-sized sites, take care to do shallow tillings
after the initial elimination of weeds and/
or grass. For larger areas, cultivating with
conventional farm machinery can be an
effective way to eliminate established perennial weeds from rich, heavy soils.
If your large site was previously a cropped
farm field (therefore free of perennial
weeds) or if it contains deep sand or gravel soils that do not support heavy weed
growth, several diskings prior to sowing
seed may be all the cultivation needed.

For more common, weed-prone soils,

cultivation of large sites should begin
with fall plowing. If the soil is subject to
erosion, however, defer the initial plowing
until spring. When soil can be worked the
following spring, cultivate with a disk to
a depth of four to five inches. Cultivate
every two weeks until fall in an effort to
destroy the roots of perennial weeds.
For Canada thistle, quack grass or other rhizomatous weeds, follow the initial
disking with a spring-tooth harrow or
digger to bring roots to the soil surface,
where sunlight and drying will kill them.
After all weed roots are dead, switch to
shallow cultivations timed to eliminate
freshly germinated weed seedlings.

More economical choices might be

salvaged or recycled wood paneling
or industrial-weight tarps. Other
suitable materials include newspapers or cardboard covered with leaves
or grass clippings. While smothering
will eliminate plants, a large weed
seed bank may remain.

EXAMPLE: Timed intervals of 4 to 5 weeks on and 1 to 2 weeks off will allow multiple waves of weed seeds to germinate before bring killed during the following cycle of smothering. Some weeds
need to be covered for two years. Smothering a lawn takes less time; usually it can be killed in two months by a close mowing before covering.

SOLARIZATION WITH CLEAR PLASTIC

Solarization is an effective process for removing weedy competition on smaller sites without the use of herbicides. Solarization
works by raising the soil temperature enough to kill weed seeds
near the soil surface. This process requires about 6 months from
start to finish and should begin in the spring.

Mow and rake loose debris from

the site early in the spring. Remove any sharp plant material
that may puncture or tear plastic. Tilling the site isnt necessary
but will simplify the process of
burying the edges while providing a prepared bed for seeding.

Repeated shallow cultivations one or two

inches deep through two growing seasons
can deplete the shallow weed seed bank
without exposing weed seeds from deeper
in the soil.

SMOTHERING

A few methods that can be utilized

for early-season site preparation
are Smothering and Solarization,
explained on the opposite page.

The idea behind smothering is simple:

A plant cant live without sunlight, so
covering the soil surface for an extended period of time will kill the unwanted
plants underneath.

SMOTHERING

Choose a preparation strategy that is

suited to your site and circumstances,
one that you can fully execute.

For preparing sites smaller than a few

thousand square feet, smothering weeds
can be effective. It is a simple technique
that requires no chemicals or special
equipment.

SMOTHERING

Site Preparation

Black plastic is a common choice for a

smothering material, but it has a tendency to deteriorate over time. It may
blow away if not properly anchored
and can be punctured by sharp weed
debris left underneath.

SMOTHERING

SMOTHERING

Seed Mix

Learn to identify the common weeds

in your area. Undesirable shrubs,
small trees and non-native plants
and weeds should be eliminated.
Depending on the size of the
planting area and the time before
seeding, different techniques can
be used such as repeated tilling,
herbicide application, smothering,
solarization or simply sod removal.
If a controlled burn is an option for
your site, it can help to eliminate
brush cover and undesirable plants.

The weed seed bank holds the

accrued deposits of dormant weed
seeds that have been falling on the
soil sometimes for many years.
Weed seed dormancy can be broken
by even slight soil disturbance: a
change in soil temperature or a brief
exposure to light. If the area you
are planting already is dominated
by weeds, you should consider an
aggressive site preparation regime;
usually that involves a full growing
season (April-September) of killing
off the weeds.

START SMOTHERING

Eliminating competition and correct

seedbed preparation are early steps
that are essential to the success of
your native planting. It may try your
patience, but it can greatly accelerate
the long-term establishment of your
native species.

Dig a shallow trench around the perimeter of your planting site

(hiring or renting a trencher can make quick work of this). Be
careful to pile soil on the outside of the site. This will make burying the plastic edges much easier.

Water the area throughly if solarizing an untilled site. Position

the plastic at one end of your site, making sure to center the material. Be sure to use durable plastic sheeting that is UV stable,
such as greenhouse plastic.

Starting along one side, bury the edges of the plastic. If there is a little extra you can simply fold
the plastic under and bury with soil. Bury and firmly pack the edges to create an airlock which is
essential to the heating process. Add weights to the center of your plastic sheet to prevent wind
from unseating the airlock. Apply greenhouse repair tape to any rips or holes.

In late summer remove the plastic, before cooler weather begins to set in. Plastic that is left on
site into cooler weather will actually promote new growth of bordering rhizomatous weeds
and grasses. Hand sow your seed mix over the solarized area as recommended for a dormant
fall planting.

flowers while providing habitat for wildlife. Enjoy
a succession of colors and textures spring through
fall as the planting matures but an explosion of
color can be expected late summer and early fall
as these majestic prairie species reach their full
height and bloom.

High diversity and a heavy seeding rate make this

a very strong, very showy mix. With 100+ species
there will be a variety of flowers blooming continuously late spring through fall. This mix will
thrive in average soils, but can handle a range of
soil conditions from wet-mesic to dry-mesic. Includes most of our bird and butterfly favorites.

Often during construction, topsoil and organic

matter are removed, leaving exposed clay.
Establishing plants in such harsh conditions can
be challenging. Tough species in this seed mix,
including Purple Coneflower, Yellow Coneflower,
Wild Bergamot, and Big Bluestem, above, are up
to the task.

248 seeds / sq ft. 13.7 lbs/acre 87+ species of

Wildflowers (65% by wt), 13 species of Grasses
(35% by wt).

Once established, the deep root systems on the

tough native perennials chosen for this mix
will need no water or other care during times of
drought or brief flooding, while other species
would fail in these challenging conditions.

If planted in the fall or early spring, most of these
plants will establish in the first year. Some blooms
can be expected in year one but this should not
stop you from mowing that season. Clipping
or cutting will not harm the plants and blooms
should be profuse in the second and third years.

We are offering this seed mix in cooperation with the Bring Back the
Pollinators campaign of the non-profit Xerces Society. Pollinators are
critical to human food crops yet our practices result in habitat loss,
environmental toxins and monocultural cropping that compounds stress
on them, threatening their, and our, survival. To counter this trend and
introduce more pollinator-friendly plant diversity, this uniquely diverse,
100% North American native mix includes species that produce not only
nectar but the habitat that pollinators require for survival. Designed for
full-sun to partial-shade sites with medium soils, this shortgrass mix boasts
grasses and most wildflowers at 3, with some flowers reaching 5 at full
bloom. Bloom times progress spring through fall. Our Pollinator-Palooza
Seed Mix moves beyond more common pollinator mixes by offering plants
that appeal to a broad array of pollinating insects.

Were proud to offer a seed mix specifically designed to attract native

beneficial insects, to the delight of farmers, gardeners and the insectintrigued. Our Insectopia seed mix was developed through a collaboration
with non-profit Xerces Society and boasts a variety of wildflowers and
grasses chosen specifically to attract predatory and parasitoid insects, as
well as spiders that feed on insect pests. Wildflower species with shallow
nectaries are attractive to hover flies, tachinid flies and gentle, parasitoid
wasps, while white flowering species such as Prairie Onion, Rattlesnake
Master and Mountain Mint attract parasitoid wasps, predatory beetles
and a wide variety of bees. Our Insectopia mix also contains four species
of Milkweed that support a range of pollinators, including Monarch
butterflies, and a trio of bunch-forming grasses that provide refuge for
predatory beetles.
