WELDING AND CASTING LAB HOMEWORK No.4

(25 questions, 4 points each)
Name: Shawn Davin
Class day & time: 2:30 on Thursday
Chapter 4
1. What safety devices are used to prevent cylinders from exploding when
subjected to intense pressure?
Flash Arrestors, safety nut, fusible plug
2. How much should the cylinder valve be opened on an acetylene cylinder?
About one quarter turn
How much on the oxygen cylinder?
Full open position
3. Why is it dangerous to allow grease or oil to come in contact with the oxygen
cylinder valve?
Possible combustion hazard because the oxygen aids combustion if
exposed to flammable materials.
4. Why are the oxygen and acetylene hose fittings made with different screw
threads?
To prevent the hoses from being misconnected.
5. How are sizes of welding tips indicated?
The size of the tip is governed by the diameter of its opening, which is
marked on the tip.
6. What is a tip cleaner?
A tip cleaner is an object that cleans a torch tip
When and why should it be used?
A tip cleaner is used when carbon forms on the tip of the torch. The
carbon must be removed to ensure free flow.
7. Why should the adjusting screw on a regulator be fully released before
opening a cylinder valve?
The regulator may be damaged if this is not done.
8. Why is it a poor practice to light a torch with a match?
You could burn yourself.
9. Oxy-hydrogen is often used for what operations?
Welding then sections of metal, usually aluminum, on which low
temperatures are required.

Chapter 5
10. Why should the cylinder outlet nozzles be examined closely?
To make sure they are free of dirt or foreign particles.
11. Why are check valves used?
To prevent the reverse flow of gases that would result in a combustible
mixture in the welding hose.
12. What is the proper method of testing for gas leaks?
Use soapy water with a brush to test for leaks at connections. The hose
can be submerged in water to check for leaks.
13. What governs the size of the tip which should be used?
The thickness of the material that is to be welded.
14. How far should the acetylene needle valve be opened when lighting the
torch?
of a turn.
15. What is meant by an oxidizing flame?
A flame in which there is excess oxygen.
16. What is a carburizing flame?
A reducing flame in which there is excess fuel gas.
17. What are the characteristics of a neutral flame?
A brilliant white cone that is approximately 1/16 to long. Soft and quiet.
18. What are some of the conditions that may cause a backfire?
a. operating the torch at lower pressures than required
b. touching the welding tip on the work
c. overheating the welding tip
d. an obstruction in the welding tip
19. What is meant by a flashback in an oxyacetylene torch?
A recession of the flame into or back of the mixing chamber.

Chapter 6
20. Why should the torch be raised when it nears the end of the weld?
To prevent blow through at the end of the workpiece.
21. If the metal does not melt readily, what is the probable cause?
a. Insufficient torch setup
b. insufficient filler metal
c. insufficient travel speed
22. Why is a filler rod used in welding?
It builds up the weld, adding strength to the joint.
23. What are some of the signs of correct filler rod selection?
a. smooth flow
b. unites with the base metal
c. no excess sparking
24. What determines the size of the rod that should be used?
The thickness of the base metal.
25. What should be the position of the torch for welding a T-joint?
The torch should be held so that it forms a 45 degree angle to the bottom
of the workpiece.
