April 2010

Dearest in Christ:

Some time has transpired since our last update, so, we know you are wondering what has happened to us. To start, we
must comment on the drought we experienced for about a year! You might remember us boasting of the vegetables we
had planted in our garden. Well, the drought destroyed them all! Our car, Betsy, has been giving us a lot of problems,
but she came to our rescue during the dry spell. Bertram had to go to the nearest town for water either before and or
after work/school. At least once per month for the last 5 months, the National Water Commission has been trucking
water to our village. Whatever we get, however, serves us for no more than a week.

God be praised! Dornett has recovered very well from her surgery. We do appreciate your prayers on her behalf. Also,
we wish to extend thanks to those who assisted us in covering her medical expenses.

Daniel continues to develop into a strong, handsome and energetic young man. He’s now a year and 5 months. We are
convinced he’s going to have some involvement in the music industry as he never fails to rock to every beat and turn
everything (and everyone!) into a drum! We want to get him a drum kit but we are scared of loosing our ability to hear
before we become grandparents!

We have completed level one of a Jamaican Sign Language course. We now attend Calabar Baptist Fellowship for the
Deaf on 4th Sundays. It’s wonderful seeing the deaf singing, reading the Scriptures, praying, preaching and testifying of
God’s goodness in their language. It is taking us a while to get used to praying with our eyes opened, fixed on the person
offering up prayers and using our right fist to pound an outstretched left palm for “amen”! Dornett is thinking of ways in
which she could help the young women of the Fellowship. Bertram has been asked to assist in leading the Men’s Bible
Study on 4th Sundays. He’s also leading a series of Studies on Leviticus at his home church.

Progress continues to be made in our Translation of the New Testament into Jamaican Creole. Luuk Buk is launched this
year in the UK (May), in the USA and Canada (June) and in Jamaica (August). The audio has been done and we are in the
process of printing the text. We’ve had the opportunity of having our Translation Consultant spend a week with us.
During his visit, we were able to go through 1 Thessalonians. Our Exegetes have reviewed 1-2 Thessalonians and 1
Timothy. Several other books are in the process of being checked. We also had the opportunity to meet with Faith
Comes By Hearing’s America’s Regional Manager. Our thinking is that the agency will do our audio recording to the New
Testament. Our project website is now up. Please visit us at www.jamiekanbaibl.org

This May, Bertram completes the final 4 of a total of 11 prerequisite courses for an MA Linguistics. He has exams
between 4th and 10th May. Not long thereafter, he travels to Nairobi, Kenya. He departs on 18th June and returns on 5th
July. He travels to the mother-land to attend a workshop designed for trainers of Bible Translators - a role he will assume
in the not-too-distant future.

Do, use the above information to inform your prayers on our behalf. We also pray for you, so please send us your prayer
requests. We’d be happy to lift them up before our God – whether in English, Jamaican Creole or Sign Language!

Serving together,
Bertram, Dornett and Daniel
