Children enjoy free airplane rides

Pilots and members of EAA, Chapter 943 volunteer their time,
planes and fuel and give children the experience of a lifetime.

By Lauren Jones
Editor

If you didn’t make it out to the Fernandina

Beach Airport last weekend,
you missed your opportu-
nity to fly in an airplane
for free. The local Experi-
mental Aircraft Association
Chapter 943 offered flights to kids
from ages 8 to 18.
The planes went up about 1,000 feet and
circled the island for about 45 minutes at
120 knots. Children said they could feel their
stomach roll when the planes took off and
the roughness of the air as they were flying.
Kids were equipped with head sets to hear the
pilots’ instructions. They were shown how to
maneuver the plane and what the controls in
the cockpit do.
The local EAA chapter consists of volunteer
pilots who donate their time, planes and fuel
to help get kids interested in aviation. They
have been offering the free flights for 10 years
now and it has been a success. Ray Fountain/The Nassau News

total of 67 kids flew that day as well as some
of their parents.
“Not a one of them were scared. All the kids
were really excited to be there,” Jones said.
There were 17 from West Nassau High’s
ROTC program and three from Fernandina
Beach High’s ROTC program.
They offer the rides as part of the Young
Eagles program which was developed to wel-
