Cutaneous nerves
a. Lateral cutaneous nerve
- branch of common peroneal nerve
b. superficial peroneal nerve
c. saphenous nerve
- branch of femoral nerve
- Longest femoral branch ending & the skin of great toe
Superficial Veins & Lymph Vessels
Medial end of dorsal venous arch uniting with 1st digital vein drains into the long
saphenous vein femoral vein
***accompanied by saphenous nerve
Lateral end of dorsal venous arch uniting with 5th digital vein short saphenous vein
popliteal vein
***accompanied by sural nerve
Deep Fascia of the leg
- Continuous with deep fascia of thigh
- Forms 3 compartments:
a. anterior intermuscular septa
b. posterior intermuscular septa
c. deep transverse intermuscular septa
- Interosseus membrane of tibia & fibula
Modifications of Deep Facia
1. Superior extensor retinaculum
2. Inferior extensor retinaculum
3. Flexor retinaculum
4. Superior peroneal retinaculum
5. Inferior peroneal retinaculum
Extensor Compartment of the Leg
1. Tibialis anterior
2. Extensor hallucis longus
3. Extensor digitorum longus
4. Peroneus tertius
Blood Vessels
o Anterior tibial/ deep peroneal artery & vein
dorsalis pedis artery + lateral plantar artery = plantar arch
branch of popliteal artery
o Anterior tibial nerve/ deep peroneal nerve

- Minimal subcutaneous tissue

- Plantar arch
- Lateral plantar artery

- Tuberosity of navicular
2. Lataral ligament
a. Anterior talofibular ligament

b. Calcaneofibular ligament
c. Posterior talofibular ligament
Nerve Supply:
- Deep peroneal nerve
- Tibial nerve
Movement
1. Extension:
a. Tibialis anterior
b. Extensor hallucis longus
c. Extensor digitorum longus
d. Peroneus tertius
***limited extension by:
a. Tendon of Achilles
b. Posterior tibiotalar ligament
c. Calcaneofibular ligament
2. Flexion:
a. Gastrocnemius
b. Soleus
c. Plantaris
d. Peroneus longus & brevis
e. Tibialis posterior
f. Flexor digitorum longus
g. Flexor hallucis longus
**limited flexion by:
a. Anterior tibiotalar ligament
b. Anterior talofibular ligament
