FDNY Banking On A New Home

116TH FIREHOUSE TOO RICH TO RESCUE
By Kevin Boyle

Ones a landmark in need of

repair. Ones a vacant eyesore in
need of a new owner. Things are
afoot that may solve both problems.
The NY Fire Department
found out that a landmark building is a nice idea until you have
to renovate. The City and the
FDNY have found the prospect
of overhauling the firehouse on
Beach 116th Street to be so steep
that relocating might be a better
option. Right now, the preferred
site is the vacant HSBC bank at
116th Street and Beach Channel
Drive.
The firehouse, more than 100
years old and home to Engine
268 and Ladder 137, was landmarked in 2013. The HSBC
bank, formerly the Sunset Diner,
never reopened after Hurricane
Sandy in 2012. The building and
lot is not and was never owned
by HSBC. The property is owned

Landmark might get new use

by Jeff Sutton, who according to

Forbes magazine is worth $3.4
billion and is among the top
200 richest Americans. Because
HSBC signed a long-term lease,
the bank continues to pay rent
to Sutton who purchased the
property in 2006 for $3.9 million.
While the parent company of

HSBC shows no interest in reopening the branch and the landlord continues to receive rent,
there has been no reason to believe the property would be anything other than a vacant dead
spot at the foot of Rockaways
main commercial strip.
Until now. As it became ap-

parent that a needed overhaul

and updating of the 116th Street
firehouse, now shrouded with
unsightly scaffolding, would cost
many millions, the FDNY started
looking at other locations. Rockaways topography limits such
options. Because Rockaway is so
narrow the north and south real
estate possibilities are quite few.
Heading west of 116th Street, the
first option would likely be the
firehouse on Beach 169th Street
leaving almost four miles between it and the next firehouse
at Beach 94th Street. Relocating
too far to the east of 116th Street
would create a gap of adequate
fire protection on the west end.
The HSBC bank site appears
ideal for a fire company because
it has frontage on both Beach
Channel Drive and Newport Avenue, which would allow fire apparatus and emergency vehicles
easy access to either east or west

Not So Terrible Two

Two years, already two
years since I last paid for a
newspaper. Yep, The Rockaway Times is two years old
this week. Its no time for a
victory lap because its not
like we have things down to
a science. We make mistakes
all the time and live in fear
of disaster. The Daily News
prints our newspaper and

if they ever go under who

knows what well do. Though
we do have a backup mimeograph machine. Remember
them? Itd be kind of funny
to see people smelling The
Rockaway Times the way kids
in class used to smell handouts and sheets that were
hot off the mimeograph. I
can hear people now, I dont

know what Boyle wrote but

it smelled good. And thats
something they usually
dont say about me.
Two years. Its two years
and we think everybody
knows The Rockaway Times
by now but whenever we feel
good about our name someone comes by the booth and
asks us to give them a ride to
JFK. Some people still think
were Belle Rock car service.
Which is ok. If this newspaper thing doesnt work out,
I can get my chauffeurs license and a fake Russian accent.
And to think The Rockaway Times almost didnt
happen. Two years ago, I
ordered a sign for the front
of the booth. But the sign
came with a typo. The Rockway Times see the typo?
Not easy to spot. Rockway
is missing an a. The sign
went up and I almost died
right there.
I got the sign fixed but it
was knocked off the building
by a delivery truck a couple
of weeks later. What a start.
Oh yeah, mistakes, there
have been a few.
Some
beauts. We ran an ad that
was supposed to say $4 off
when you purchase a dozen cupcakes. The ad we ran
said it was $4 for the whole
dozen. That was pretty bad.
Worse, we ran it by mistake
again a couple of weeks later. We apologized and apologized and ran free ads for a
while but boy, oh boy, that
was bad.
It was kind of a turning
point though. My trusted
staff (Pat McVeigh, Katie McFadden, and Fred Marino,)
stepped up and became The
Indispensibles and allowed
me to retain my last ounce
of sanity. So even though
its no time for a victory lap
Ive gotta shout out some big
thanks and start with them.
Our columnists deserve
more than I give them (which
so far has been a pat on the
back and maybe a t-shirt. Oh,
and I gifted Lazer Lou a caricatureanybody else want
one? ). Lou Pastina, Helen
Kilgallen, Paulette Mancuso,
Pete Mahon, Alex Karinsky,
John Cori, Sharon Feldman,

Page 5
Beefchip, Emil Lucev, Pete
Galvin, Artie Wallace, and
Rick Horan contribute regularly and help (in our estimation) make The Rockaway
Times feel like a magazine as
much as a newspaper. Those
names are off the top of my
head whod I forget? Well,
Dylan Watton, Pat Morgan,
Frank Chimera, Bob Donohue, and Doug MacLeod
get big thanks too but this
is a column and dont have
enough room so I cant explain why.
This column would start
to look like a phonebook if
I mentioned everyone who
has contributed. Weve gotten special reports from fine
local writers; were regularly
sent fantastic photos from
readers. We welcome and
encourage community input
because like the hokey pokey thats what its all about.
We love when readers send
photos of themselves wearing the Rockaway Times
t-shirts. We love when you
write, email, call or stop by
just to say how much you like
the paper. You were there at
the beginning and somehow
youre still with us so youre
like family. (And every family has some nuts!)
We havent had a crime or
Phil Goldfeder on our front
page (We love ya, Phil but
sorry!). Theres too much to
celebrate about Rockaway
to focus on crime and politicians. So far, practically no
one seems to mind.
Two years in and the papers still free; deliverys free,
and the websites free. But
we do ask that you aim you
hard earned dollars at our
advertisers. Tell them you
saw their ad in The Rockaway Times and youll do your
part to keep The Rockaway
Times chugging through year
three. Is that a deal?
Thanks everyone!

bound traffic lanes.
A Fire Department spokesman said the move is not a done
deal though soil testing has been
done at the site as a preliminary
step in determining the overall
viability of the site.
Jon Gaska, District Manager
of Community Board 14, was
alerted to the possible move by
an FDNY official who told Gaska that a ULURP application
might cross his desk. A ULURP
is a standardized City procedure
whereby applications affecting
the land use of city property
would be publicly reviewed.
To use City property assuming the City takes control of the
site the FDNY would submit
an application to the City Planning Commission. Copies of this
application are then sent to the
Queens Borough President, the
Community Board, and the City
Council within five days. Certifying the application (which might
involve Environmental Impact
studies and such) is more of an
open-ended timeline. Once an
application is certified, a Com-

munity Board has 60 days to hold
a public hearing and then issue
a recommendation to City Planning and the Borough President.
The Borough President would
then have 30 days to make a recommendation followed by possible City Council and Mayoral
review.
The FDNY did not indicate
when an application would be
submitted. Jim Long, the spokesman, suggested it could be five
years before trucks and engines
rolled out of a new facility.
In the event that a deal is
struck, what will become of the
landmarked firehouse? The
usual process would be for the
City to issue a Request For Proposals (RFP). RFPs can range
in scope. The City could request proposals for commercial
use (e.g. restaurant, art gallery,
hotel, etc) or issue one limited to non-profit interests such
as community or educational
centers, for instance.
As for the HSBC site, The Rockaway Times emailed property
owner Jeff Sutton for comment
but he did not reply by press
time.

STUDY SHOWS ROCKAWAY IS JUST 400 YEARS OLD

Rockaway may be younger
than thought. A new study by
Ecologist Eric Sanderson in the
Northeastern Naturalist, shows
that Rockaway once didnt exist
and may have started to form
just 400 years ago.
Sanderson, a WCS Senior
Conservation Ecologist, researched about 100 historical
maps of New York City, dating
back as far as 1501 to investigate
the changing shape of Jamaica
Bay and its surrounding marshlands. Jamaica Bay marsh islands are of undoubted importance to the ecology of the city
today, because we have lost so
much already, Sanderson said
in a press release. But it is unlikely they have always been
there. Looking into the past
helps us see how nature shapes
New York City and understand
the enormous and often expensive efforts required to hold
back natural forces.
The study shows that the peninsula didnt always exist and
it formed as part of the barrier island system on the south
shore of Long Island, growing

in fits and starts over the last

400 years, as the result of wave
and storm action. In the historical map series, the peninsula
can be clearly seeing elongating
and changing shape over time,
forming islands and new inlets.
Sanderson hypothesizes that
the Rockaway Peninsula created a protective environment
that allowed salt marsh islands
to form within Jamaica Bay, in
the late eighteenth early nineteenth century. Changes in
the Rockaways were caused by
sand moved by a combination
of tides, currents, wind, and
storms. These dynamics are
common to barrier island systems around the world.
During the late nineteenth
and early twentieth century, some people began to live
on the marshes, creating the
community of Broad Channel,
Queens, and a former community on Ruffle Bar. After World
War II, the Rockaway Peninsula was extensively developed,
including housing projects,
which were extensively damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

Monsignor much-loved but hes

Speaking of Facebook, our page

Well, summer started on
Monday but it officially starts
when the St. Francis de Sales

*****
Just an FYI on an RFP. We too
often casually toss around the term
RFP as if everyone knows what it is.
Well, RFP stands for Request For
Proposals. So, if the City owns a
property that it wants to lease out
they would issue an RFP. The City
would be Requesting Proposals or
ideas for the property. Same would
be the case for a ferry operation.
The City issues an RFP hoping
companies make proposals.
*****
So whats the story with the
courthouse?
You know, the

building thats been vacant for

decades on Beach 90th Street
and Beach Channel Drive. It was
supposed to become a medical
center but that fell apart and now
the old Keyfood on Beach 105th
and Rockaway Beach Boulevard
will become a state of the art
medical center so theres no need
for such a facility at the courthouse.
The City struck a deal with the
developers with deadlines. Jon
Gaska of Community Board 14
said none of the deadlines have
been met and its just a matter of
time before a new RFP goes out.
The original developer, Ari
Kaufman, maintains something
will happen soon.
*****
A recent study suggests that the
Rockaway peninsula is just 400
years old and some of the marsh
islands in Jamaica Bay just a couple
of hundred years old. The study
appears in online edition of the
journal Northeastern Naturalist.
*****
The firehouse on Beach
116th Street wont be moving

stop people from weighing in
on what to do with the firehouse

that was landmarked in 2013.
Many suggested a restaurant
with a firehouse theme, some a
community meeting space. The
City would first have to issue you
guessed it an RFP.

The
boardwalk
between
Beach 109th and Beach 117th
opened last Friday and, well, its
fantastic! People walking, biking,
and running were all smiles.
The ridiculous toilets in the sky

and lifeguard stations that look

stand out in contrast to the new

dampen the joy to see that stretch
open.

VERY FUNNY..
By Lou Pastina

I awoke Thursday morning

to an email that asked, wheres
the outrage from the publisher
of this paper. Still sleepy, I tried
to press through the morning fog
that is my 9 a.m. retired ritual to
figure out what the hell I should
be outraged about today. I do not
posses a Larry David type outrage
mode, so I thought if the publisher is asking I better figure it out.
Nothing on twitter, Facebook,
or other social media, I finally
turned to the source, the Rockaway Times. Perhaps he messed
with this weeks column?

I was overcome with grief when

turning to the page with my column to find it now adorned with
a caricature of me; one I had never seen before! Horrified by its
splendid detail, I was mortified
to find out that my family had already seen this monstrosity and
were having contests as to who I
looked like most!
My esteemed son offered
George Costanza, that short, fat,
bald, bespeckled curmudgeon of
Seinfeld fame. While there was
some resemblance, the face was
a bit too thin for George. My lovely brother offered Dick Cheney,
the former Vice President under

George Bush, parodied by Saturday Night Lives Darrell Hammond. But alas I did not possess
that snidely sneer that Dick Cheney
was so famous for. My dear nephew was the kindest of all, noting
that the scarf was a nice touch and
true to my spirit. I still am not sure if
that was a put-down.
So by that point the outrage had
built to the point of what to do next?
How should I react to this affront?
Should I quit writing, this way the caricature would not be shown again?
No, I couldnt do that; the publisher
would simply run old columns using this perverse piece of pop art to
defame me. Using old columns is a
technique he employs for his own
columns! Should I get a portrait of
him done and display somewhere?
No, cant do that, too much time and
effort, Im retired now, cant be bothered. I considered, what would have
drove him to do such a thing? And
then it occurred to me that he may
actually like the caricature and think
its good.
The real problem I could see
was that it looked more like me
then anyone else, but seeing it
was my issue. I resemble in my
old age my Uncle Tommy, my fa-

The Rockaway Times

thers brother, who was known to
be a bit of hoople. You see in my
mind I still see the 28-year-old me,
not the bald guy! So I believe my
only recourse is to say thank you
for helping me confront my own
aging and grow to accept that I am
a hobbled former shell of my self.
There I feel better now. Namaste.
On a side note, last weeks column asked the question what
if? I received a terrific what
if scenario from an unaffiliated
Yogi in the neighborhood who offered - what if the Neponsit Home
for the Aged was repurposed to
be a Yoga and Wellness Center?
And I thought what a wonderful
idea! The location is ideal and it
could house a Spa with all sorts of
New Age type treatments including classes on Yoga, diet, wellness, acupuncture, you name it. It
would be a perfect retreat center.
And best of all it might fit right
into the zoning purpose of the
building a Health Facility! This
was a wonderful vision, my only
question is this is there anyone
out there who would be willing to
fund this grand thought? Perhaps
a caricature might help people
visualize its potential?

RockStock and Barrels
kicked off the summer right

The annual event is hosted
by Jimmy Dowd of St. James

of Boarders Surf Shop, along
with the Department of Parks

bands included Bad Sign,

Brotherhood of the Grape,
Tumbleweed Highway and
Ethoscope. Besides a surf
contest, skate contest, live
music and a shopping village,
this years festival also included Red Bulls transformer DJ booth and a tough obstacle course set up by CROM
Physical Culture. The fun

continued into the night with

Shop Til You Drop!

Boardwalk Fair Returns
By Katie McFadden

Grab your wallet, the Super

Boardwalk Street Fair is back!
This weekend, from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 and
Sunday, June 26 will be the first of
three boardwalk vendor fairs this
summer from Long Island Street
Fairs. The event will feature more
than 50 vendors selling unique
products and services.
For the fourth summer in a
row, Alan Finchley of Long Island
Street Fairs, is bringing this shopping extravaganza back to the
boardwalk. The fair is expected to
take place in the vicinity of Beach
86th to Beach 97th Street and will
feature several unique vendors.
Our vendors consist of three
basic populations: craft vendors
who hand make their own unique
items, gift vendors who sell items
they have personally handpicked
and service vendors who offer
home and lifestyle information,
Finchley said, adding that the
products are unique to the area.
We have vendors that dont
compete with local shopping in
the surrounding area.
Finchley, who grew up in Rockaway and now resides in Long
Island, is a longtime craft vendor
himself as a jewelry designer. After retiring in 2006, he received an
invitation from the Nassau County Parks Department to start a series of craft shows in their parks.
Finchley started the first Long
Island Street Fairs show in 2008
and the company now offers 30
different events around Long
Island and Rockaway, making
Finchleys company the largest
producer of street fairs in Long
Island. In the summer of 2013, he
brought the event to Rockaway to
bring attention to the peninsula
after it was devastated by Sandy.

I got an invitation from the Parks

Department and local civic associations as they felt Rockaway
was ready to showcase a small
event with the potential to grow
and needed something to cast a
positive light on the community
after what happened, he said. I
also grew up in Rockaway. Its my
favorite place and I know it well,
which is why I was happy to accept the invitation.
Finchley says the fair is a good
way to show how Rockaway has
changed for the better, while
providing people with a unique
shopping experience. We want
visitors to see that Rockaway has
changed and its growing and
we wanted to bring an event
here that can be appreciated by
local Rockaway residents. They
love the fact that they can get
quality items that are unique at
recognizable savings. They cant
get this stuff on Beach 116th or
Beach 129th or at nearby malls.
Its an opportunity to meet some
crafty people, gift vendors and
those in the service industry all
in one place, he said. Come
experience the new boardwalk,
which is just one spectacular
part of the Rockaway renaissance
with a safe, beautiful, informal,
alternative shopping experience
that you can only get for a limited
amount of time.
Vendors are still welcome to
join this weekends fair or any
others throughout the summer.
Applications and information for
vendors can be found at www.
longislandstreetfairs.com. If you
cant make this weekends fair,
dont fret. There are two more
coming later in the summer on
July 30 and 31 and again on August 20 and 21. Check out the
website or call 516-442-6000 for
more info.

RWA: Open Call For Artist Submissions

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance
will be accepting proposals for the
2016 Art Underneath the Elevated, a
temporary public art installation that
will commission three artists to envision, produce, and exhibit temporary
sculpture and art underneath Rockaway's elevated train structure.
The space below the elevated
A-line subway tracks is currently a
fragmented roadway, and de facto
community corridor for bikers and
pedestrians, but has the potential
to serve as an important cross-peninsula connection. With art and
creative place making as a catalyst,
RWA hopes to animate this public
space to inspire the community to
imagine its potential. This project
builds on RWA's current redesign
initiative, Project Underway, and
larger NYC initiatives like Design
Trust for Public Space and NYC
DOT's Under the Elevated.
Three projects with be selected,
and recipients will receive an in
production grant to support their
project, along with a community

FAR ROCKAWAY

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter Katie Lucev

The Cornell Family Cemetery in

Far Rockaway dates back to 1690
when the patriarch of the family, Richard Cornell was buried.
His wife Elizabeth and many other members of this distinguished
family are also buried in this small

plot. A few Cornell men served in

the New York Colonial Legislature before the Revolution. Others
served in the Revolution and Civil
War of 1812. The site is a New York

Paddy Tubz: An Actors Life For Me

By Katie McFadden

You may have seen him

wearing a colorful afro or
crazy costume behind the DJ
booth at a local event or party,
Radio Bingo or Monday night
trivia at the Bungalow Bar and
its guaranteed that he had you
laughing. But did you know
Paddy Tubz is also a professional actor? The Arverne by
the Sea resident is living out
his passion as an entertainer
and has shown his talents on
the big and small screen, as
well as theater, comedy club
and improv stages.
Paddy Tubz has been entertaining people for as long
as he can remember. I was
always the class clown and
I started acting when I was
very young. I would put on
puppet shows in my backyard and would assign roles
to my cousins and brothers,
who wanted no part of it because they were all athletes
and I wasn't," Tubz said of his

Paddy Tubz

Tubridy siblings. When I was

about four, I told my mom I
wanted to work in the circus.
I just always had this longing
to entertain. I got an agent as
a kid and was going to auditions as a teen and I booked
a couple commercials, he
said. In high school, his life
went off on a tangent. I was

going to go to the High School

for Performing Arts, but a lot
of my friends were going to
Xavier so I went there and
didnt follow the acting bug,
I got into student government
instead. I went to a small liberal arts college in North Carolina and didnt know what I
wanted to do. So many people

said acting was a tough industry and people were trying to

protect me, Tubz said. While
living down south, he went
on to work odd jobs from
everything from a teacher to
a hibachi chef to a seven-year
career as a pharmaceutical
sales rep before moving back
to New York in 2008.
After coming back to NY,
Tubz came across the art of
improv and started taking
classes with the Upright Citizens Brigade. I realized that
I loved improv and it brought
back something I hadnt felt
since my teenage years, which
was this playfulness of entertaining people and I said this
is what I wanted to do. I was
in my 30s when I figured it out
and although it was later in
life, I knew its never too late,"
Tubz said. From there, Tubz
went on to learn more about
comedy. I went to the Manhattan Comedy School, which

let me move on from improv
and I learned from Cory Kahaney how to do standup.
Standup is one of the most
difficult things Ive done, but
it put me out there.
Tubz has had small roles on
some big name productions.
He recently appeared on
HBOs Vinyl alongside Ray
Romano and Bob Cannavale
and CBS The Good Wife.
His film credits include eccentric roles such as a hipster
intern in The Intern, Rick the
Redneck in Illegal Alien and a
cokehead in Money Shooters.
Hes appeared in commercials
for things like Kool Aid, Nintendo NES and more. Tubz
has also dabbled in theater,
playing a newsboy and farmhand in the Bayswater Jewish
Centers production of Gypsy,
Puck in a Midsummer Nights
Dream in the Balibay Theater, Henry in Finians Rainbow
with the YMCA Theater and
much more.
Tubz continuously learns

more to improve his craft. I
only became a Screen Actors
Guild (SAG) member three
years ago and thats when it
started to open up opportunities that werent there before.
Part of that included going to
the SAG conservatory where
they teach you acting classes
and things like audition techniques. Youre never too old
to start and youre never too
old to learn something new.
Im constantly trying to get
better as an actor, he said.
Tubz has some exciting projects coming up that will give
him even more of a boost.
This year, he filmed a scene
for TV Lands The Jim Gaffigan Show alongside Jim Gaffigan and Chef Mario Batali,
who he often gets mistaken
for. The episode should be
airing soon. Hes also been
accepted into The Actors Project NYC (TAPNY) with which
hell be showcasing a monologue on off-Broadway theater this fall. Tubz is particularly excited about a fun solo
project in which hell play
Jabba the Hutt for a YouTube

video that hell be shooting in

Fort Tilden on July 6. This is
something Im doing on my
own. Its the first thing Im
producing and Ive written
myself. That creative spirit in
me is just so excited about it
because its just me alone and
Im not being directed. Im
going to share it on YouTube
and maybe it will go viral. Its
all for the smiles and laughs. I
get a natural high when I hear
laughter. It makes me so happy, he said.
While pursuing an acting
career, working in real estate
and substitute teaching, Tubz
still finds time to entertain as
a DJ, which he says helps his
craft. I started DJing in 1999.
I love music and I found that
I could also put on a show
while entertaining people
that way. Whether Im wearing an afro or dressed like a
clown, Im always entertaining and people love it. Its all
part of being a showman, he
said. He sometimes works for
his familys company, Djs@
Work, which hosts Radio Bingo, as well as independent

Page 13
gigs. Im still booking weddings and bar mitzvahs, so
feel free to book me! he added.
As far as acting goes, Tubz
has dreams of starring in his
own television show one day.
Thats my big goal. I was
never one for writing down
goals, but I started to recently
and I feel that its turned my
life around. My friend Vinny
Bonanno encouraged me to
use something called Passion
Planner and it has made a
big difference when it comes
to achieving goals. There are
big goals and there are small
goals. You have to work on the
small goals to get to the big
ones. An acting career isnt always easy, but when its your
passion, you keep going, he
said.

Eating Around The World: In Rockaway

LOBSTER ROLL AT THE WHARF
By Pat Morgan

From a Foodies perspective, nothing else signals that

summer is here like a great
Lobster Roll. And what better way to enjoy one with the
best view of Jamaica Bay? The
Wharf serves up this seasonal summer delight from June
through September.
The origin of a true lobster
roll is highly debated, especially among New Englanders. The textbook description of a traditional lobster
roll is a sandwich filled with
lobster meat soaked in butter and served on a steamed
hot dog bun or similar roll, so
that the opening is on the top
rather than on the side.
The dispute is among the
three distinct styles typically
referred to in the greater New
England area: the Connecticut Lobster Roll (described
above), the New England or

Lobster Salad Roll (served

cold with various crunchy
green stuff ) and the Maine
Lobster Roll (simply tossed
lightly with Mayonnaise on a
buttered New England Style
split-top hot dog roll). The
accompanying side dishes
can also vary, depending on
the location.
You would think that the
lobster roll was created in
Maine, but it actually originated at a restaurant named
Perry's, in Milford, Connecticut, as early as 1929, according to John Mariani's, "Encyclopedia of American Food
and Drink." Once Perry's
put the new sandwich on its
menu, its popularity spread
up and down the Connecticut
coast, but not far beyond.
Well, were not New Englanders and there is no debating how well The Wharf
serves up its popular version
of this classic. They keep it

simple,
just
like Rockaway
likes it: Fresh
lobster meat, a
flat roll that is
buttered
and
then grilled, a
little salt, pepper and mayonnaise on a
bed of Romaine
lettuce, thinly
sliced tomato
and
cucumbers, providing
the crunch and
mouth feel in
contrast to the
Wharf Lobster Roll
soft, succulent
lobster meat. Simple but el- and right on Jamaica Bay. It
egant.

I am not a bg fan of "smart"

phones. These days I am the
proud owner of a $9 TracFone.
Yeah, it's cheap with absolutely no bells or whistles but it's
also damn dependable, and
with double minutes, it costs
me on the average of $10 a
month to maintain a suitable
bank of 500+ airtime minutes,

more than suitable for my

needs. Don't need insurance
either. If it breaks or I lose it,
I simply purchase another. I
only use it for actual voice calls
as I do not text although I will
read any text message sent to
me. I tell everyone that's why
God (or Ray Tomlinson or was
it VA Shiva Ayyadurai?) invented e-mail. And you know what?
It doesn't ring all that often!
Know why? Because I don't
spread the number around like
fertilizer on a freshly plowed
cornfield. Come to think of it, I
couldn't tell you my cell number without looking it up on
the phone itself.
More than half of my 31- year
career with the NYC Department of Correction was spent
connected to some piece of
annoying and ever evolving
technology (mobile radio,
beeper, and then, the dreaded
cell phone!) all of which served
to dictate every waking (and
sleeping) moment of my life.
After my retirement from City
Corrections on Rikers Island,

into the East River. I pursued
a second career in private security for several years which
once again required me to surgically affix yet another vexing
piece of satanic technology to
my hip 24/7, which also rang
incessantly. Ultimately when
I decided to formalize my retirement I threw that damn cell
phone into Jamaica Bay.
Once I actually "retired" my
intention was to spend some
quality introspective time with
myself examining my belly button on the back deck of
my house on West 12th Road.
Unfortunately, that was not
to be. My beloved Grace told
me in no uncertain terms that
I still needed a cell phone to
make sure I could stay in contact with the family in case of
emergency. She brought me
one of those cell phones that
were all the rage some years
ago which also functioned as
a walkie-talkie. Being a good
hubby I acquiesced to the
wishes of "she who must be
obeyed" until one afternoon,
while seated at the Irish Circle talking to the bartender
Kevin Quinn, the damn thing
suddenly started beeping
loudly drawing the attention
of everyone seated at the bar
followed by the voice of my
dear Grace at full volume asking "Where are you? When will
you be home? You have a cell
phone, why don't you use it?"
Later that evening the offending piece of technology also
suffered a death by drowning
in the Jamaica Bay.
Nevertheless, the women in
my family now consider me
to be somewhat of a luddite

tion of state of the art communication and social media
technologies. They continually offer to buy me a stateof-the-art "smart" phone,
extolling the many virtues of
the thousands of "apps" that
are available for the device,
which will make my life easier. As much as I appreciate
their concern, I tell them that
my life is just fine the way it
is. I just don't understand
anyone's fascination with a
game where you throw angry
little birds against a building
or some photo app that, after
you take a "selfie," changes
your face into that of a dog or
a cat. I also have never understood anyone's deep seated
need to take and post online
pictures of every event in their
daily life: ..."having breakfast at McDonald's"...,"on
the A train heading to the
city"...,"at home watching
Game of Thrones...," "look,
it's Grumpy Cat!" Who cares?
And don't get me started on
your phone's GPS capability.
I have met people who have
no idea what a Rand McNally Road Atlas is and without
their phone's GPS app they
would never find their way
out of a paper bag. Oh, by
the way, unless you are young
enough to have a parental enforced bedtime, stop with all
those silly emoticons, please!
I tell Grace and my girls
that it's not really a good idea
to overly rely on your smart
phone for all communication,
directions, weather, news,
information, work, your relationship status, medical diagnosis for your ills. For God's
sake, go to a doctor! I mean
what are you going to do when
your battery goes dead and you
actually have to talk to people?

Your life. Enhanced

Whoa, Whoa, Hold Off On

That Advice
I am often asked where I get the
ideas for my columns. In most
cases my columns are based on
research and opinion articles
in traditional medical journals.
These journals include JAMA
(Journal of the American Medical
Association), New England Journal of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic
Proceedings, etc. After reading an
article that might be a basis for a
column, I do additional research
on the Internet. So each column
provides education and information to you, the readers of the columns, and also to me.
Unlike the editor of this wonderful paper, I usually skim the

other weekly paper published in

Rockaway. I enjoy reading Beth
Hannings column. I also skim
a column written by a self-described practitioner of homeopathic medicine, usually just
to see what over-the-top statements the author has made.
Well, on Friday I hit the jackpot.
The column was about sun exposure myths and facts. Myth
#1 was that sunscreen is good
for us. The author explains that
sunscreen absorbs most of the
UV radiation from the sun before it enters the skin, which is
true. But then the author goes
on to state that chemicals from
lines from the provider's line to
a house, especially where there
are tenants. To keep our community beautiful, it would be a
much cleaner look if the cable
company would run only one
line to a house, then they can
runs the wires from the house
to each customer.
Pressure should be put on
both companies to clean up
their lines.

Dear Editor:
I thought you might be interested in helping keep our community clean of clutter.
Rockaway has always been a
beautiful place to live....since
Hurricane Sandy its beauty has
increased with everyone repairing their homes and gardens.
However, yesterday as I
walked through the Rockaway
Park/Belle Harbor neighborhood I couldn't help but noticed all the cut wires left hanging from both Verizon and Time
Warner cable lines. There were
several on each block. It appears they are just cut and leave
them.
Also there can be several cable

Law Ignored
Dear Editor: (Please print
this letter to the Governor)
Dear Governor Cuomo:
I am asking you for help with
an important issue concerning
Rockaway Beach.
It's the federal mandated law
imposed on Rockaway Beach
in 1982, exactly one year before
your father was elected governor: The Coastal Zone Management Act 1972.CZMA.
New York State receives millions of federal funding each
year to supervise areas with
coastal zone boundaries, but
Rockaway beach is being denied
that funding. Even worse, the
city uses the same laws as they

The Rockaway Times

the sunscreen are absorbed into

the body and are linked to infertility. In fact a link between
sunscreens and male infertility
has been suspected but never
proven. If you go to the website of the American Academy
of Dermatology (www.aad.org)
you will find a reference to a
2014 NIH study which failed to
prove a definitive link. The AAD
concludes, prevention of skin
cancer and sunburn outweighs
any unproven concerns of toxicity or human health hazard from
ingredients in sunscreens.
Myth #2 is that sunbathing is
bad for us. The author states,
it is sunburn that causes skin
damage and cancers, not sunlight. Ok then where does a sunburn come from? Moonlight?
The reality is that sunbathing
is very bad for us. Skin damage
from sunlight is cumulative and
a sunburn is not required to get
skin cancer, although melanoma is often linked to a blistery
sunburn in childhood. If you
must be out in the sun wear a
protective hat, sunscreen or
sunblock, and protective cloth-

ing. Once applied, sunscreen is

not usually visible on the skin.
Sunblock, which is commonly
based on titanium or zinc oxide, is opaque and is visible on
the skin after application, which
is why most people prefer sunscreen. There are some products
that are a combination of sunscreen and sunblock.
The author recommends exposing the eyes without sunglasses and the skin without
sunscreen for a period of time in
the morning or later afternoon.
Please dont do this. Cataracts
come from exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Always wear
polarized sunglasses when out
in the sun. An easy way to tell
if sunglasses are polarized is to
hold them at arms length and
turn them 90 degrees. Polarized
lenses will darken but non-polarized lenses will not. Your eyes
are important so dont wear
cheap sunglasses. Spend a little
more for polarized glasses.

were using before the federal

mandated laws were imposed
on Rockaway. In other words
the city ignores the CZMA, but
they take the federal money to
make sure the CZMA is being
properly enforced. The city uses
the Community Board 14, in my
opinion, to deceive the public
and make believe they are doing the right thing. I have heard
the expression many times: Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
But to be breaking the law without knowing is completely different than knowingly breaking
the law. I have been informing
our community board for years
through articles in the newspapers, Facebook, twitter, but I get
no response from anyone.
The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration,
NOAA, was designated by the
federal government to be the
agency that draws the boundary lines in coastal zone boundaries. NOAA requires a state
Coastal Management Program,
CMP, and a city Waterfront Revitalization Program, WRP, in
order to work as partners to
draw the boundaries. In the
Rockaway area the Peninsula
is very narrow in some areas so

NOAA working as partners with

CMP and WRP decided to make
the entire area of Rockaway
Beach a Coastal Zone boundary, thus allowing NOAA to have
supervision and enforcement
powers in any development in
Rockaway Beach. The federal
money goes to the state CMP
and is doled out to coastal zone
boundaries. I am asking you
for help in this matter because
Rockaway Beach for too long
has been deprived of their fair
share. I await a response.

Insensitive
Dear Editor:
Your comment about feeling
like you should be living at the
Park Inn (Boyleing Points, June
16) is extremely insensitive to
the residents of the Park Inn and
the many other adult homes in
our neighborhood.
Because circumstances necessitate that a person live in a
long term care facility does not
mean that they are not worthy
of our respect.
The problem of adult homes
is not the fault of the residents.

Rockaway Carvel
A FAMILIAR NAME WITH A NEW LOOK

By Pat Morgan

Carvel is not just about Fudgie

the Whale or Cookie Puss anymore.
The Rockaway Carvel has undergone a major makeover
thanks to owner Paul Guarneri
with the help of Carvels rebranding initiative. Besides
reinvigorating a known entity
that has been at the same location for years, hes providing an
added focus on the community
by earning a Kosher Certification (prepared in compliance
with Hilchos Kashrus) as well

as serving up his frozen treats

on the beach this summer.
Guarneri is originally from
Rockaway and still has relatives
living here. He believes that the
area is in a good place with a
lot of new people reenergizing
it, making it a great destination
for New Yorkers. When asked
about why he invested in Rockaway, Guarneri replied I believe that 116th Street is a couple
of pieces away from being a true
Main Street.
Guarneri is no stranger to family-owned businesses. He took
over his fathers Kids N Shape
business in Howard Beach five
years ago. He was actually obtaining the cakes for parties there
from the Carvel he now owns.
The prior owners 10-year term
agreement with Carvel was up
and was looking to move on.
Guarneri wanted to get his feet
wet with something new and
in the process contribute to the
growth of businesses on Beach

116th Street along with Lola Starr,

Lanas Loft, and Local Liquids, to
name a few. He wanted to be a
part of the initiative that steps
up the game on the business
strip.
I think of my store less of a
franchise but something that feels
more personal. The staff is all local
and the customers have a familiarity with the servers. Guarneri
said. Even though he welcomes
the influx of beach goers this summer, he is delighted to see the store
busy at night with local residents
looking for a cool treat.
When asked about his products, Guarneri added Carvel offers great products and new flavors. It is the king of the soft-serve
with a quality that cant be beat.
We can also go off the menu and
make any custom treat. I want
everyone to leave my store with a
smile and a delicious treat theyll
enjoy. I want them to have a good
experience. All ice creams are
freshly handmade in the store

on three new machines plus a

soft-serve standalone that makes
eight different flavors at once.
Guarneri recently received
a permit from the Rockaway
Beach Club Association allowing him to sell prepared ice
cream products on the beach
from Beach 119th to Beach 149th
Streets, which he launched this
past weekend. His team will
be selling pre-made ice cream
such as flying saucers, ice cream
cups, sundaes, Oreo and Chocolate Chip ice cream sandwiches and brown bonnets (chocolate covered ice cream cones).
Ironically, Fudgie The Whale
really is Rockaway Carvels top
seller for Fathers Day.
The Rockaway Carvel is located
at 189 Beach 116th Street, Rockaway Park, NY. Phone: (718) 9455877. Orders can be placed via
email beach116carvel@gmail.
com or their website carvel.com.

Queen Elizabeth I passed a law
which forced everyone except
for the rich to wear a flat cap on
Sundays.
In 1811, nearly a quarter of all
women in Britain were called Mary.
In the 19th century, sausages were
marketed as 'Bags of Mystery.'
In 2013, a cat named Cookie went
missing while on vacation with his
owner in Grasse, Southern France.
Eighteen months later Cookie
returned "dirty and emaciated"
having travelled a journey of 700
miles, all the way home.
The Green Bay Packers are named
after the Indian Packing Company,
who paid for their first uniforms
on the condition that the team be
named after them.
In an experiment, rats that were
trained to press a lever for food
stopped pressing the lever once
they saw that it also caused
another rat to receive an electric
shock.

The Wang Dong cave in the

Chongquing province of China
is so massive that it has its own
weather
system,
complete
with clouds, pools, rivers and
waterfalls.
A mountaineer named Ricardo

Pea found a wallet in the Andes
mountain range. It had fallen
out of a plane, which crashed
in 1972. Realizing the owner
of the wallet was one of the 16
survivors, he returned it to him,
32 years later.

Remember
The Reformulation
On a serious note: Seems there
has been a lot of premature reports circulating around social
media about the final results of
the 2003 Rockaway Beach- Jamaica Bay Reformulation Study.
Yes, we all are waiting patiently
to know what the Army Corps
will have in store for our shores.
Even if the final report came
to us this morning, we'd still
have many rounds of public
hearings and discussion on the
topic for years before we see a
shovel in the ground.
Be prepared folks. There will
be many groups weighing in on

the topic. There will be people

fighting the idea of a gate in Jamaica Bay. You'll hear that the
gate will cause a disruption
of the mating pattern of some
two-headed jellyfish you never knew existed. You will also
hear that stone groins will prevent the flow of sand along the
shore. Of course we know that
the Rockaway peninsula is at
the end of the line, the end of
a hundred mile island, so the
flow matters little. We may as
well capture all the sand before
Breezy connects with New Jersey. Could you imagine, Rocka-

The Rockaway Times

way part of the Jersey Shore!?!?

Yikes!!!!!!
There will be many groups and
activists saying that we need to
let nature take its course. Insisting that dunes alone are all
we need to keep our beaches in place for public use. And
outlandish tales of how dunes
alone will prevent 3,000 10-foot
high waves from breaching our
boardwalk and baffles walls.
More importantly we will
need to stay focused on the
funding, we see how all the
boardwalk and Build it Back
funding is being thrown around
like Monopoly money. Stay
tuned, but more importantly,
stay VIGILANT!!!
On a less serious note: If you
have any artistic kids who love
to paint, please feel free to
come out to our paint-out Friday night at 5:30 p.m. on the
boardwalk at Beach 86th. We
will be painting wood cutouts
of whale tales and shark fins.
This event is sponsored by the
Rockaway Beach Civic, Friends
of Rockaway Beach and the
Parks Department. You will be
painting so dress to paint.

Electronic signs will be

Brooklyn, and along Rockaway Point Blvd. and Beach
Channel Drive in the Rockaways, notifying motorists to
use the Cross Bay Veterans
Memorial Bridge as a detour
during the closure periods.
The closures are required
to allow for maintenance

Q&A with Congressional Hopeful Ali Mirza

a businessman with honesty and
integrity - a progressive who will
give true representation to the
ENTIRE district.
What makes you a good candidate?
I am not lazy and corrupt. I
have many fresh, great ideas.
Meeks has been missing in action
for 18 years. He is busy traveling
outside the district on taxpayers'
dime. He has abandoned our
communities. I am the change
that will help stop the bleeding
and build our future on a solid
foundation.
What are some of the issues
you stand for?
I propose "loan forgiveness"
to those who are heavily indebted by college loans. I propose
that future loans must be completely interest free. I will work
to ban corporations like United
Technologies for shipping our
jobs abroad, from getting billions of dollars in defense contracts. I will reward businesses
that create good paying jobs for
America with incentives. I will
divert our resources from build-

from perpetual wars to building necessary infrastructure.
Reforming the criminal justice
system, Ending "Citizen United"
and the role of corrupt money
in politics, Promoting diplomacy to resolve conflicts with other
nations, Passing comprehensive
immigration reforms without
breaking the families in the process and without compromising
our national security, Women's
and LGBT rights are my other big
goals.
What do you hope to do for
Rockaway?
I will always be around to listen
to the Rockaway community and
ALL communities in my district.
I will be your spokesperson and
will work with you on ALL issues,
even on the local, county and
state issues NOT under the jurisdiction/powers of a congressperson. I will make sure that we have
enough safeguards built to prevent the repeat of the kind of suffering, loss and damages caused
by Hurricane Sandy, from ever
happening again.

Tuesday,
June 28 is
the
Congressional Primary
election
from 6 a.m.
to 9 p.m..
You
can
Ali Mirza
vote for the
Democratic candidate for the
congressional seat in District 5,
currently held by Congressman
Gregory Meeks. He is being
challenged by Ali Mirza who
stopped the Rockaway Times to
introduce himself.
Tell me about yourself.
I am a resident of Elmont since
October 1991. I came to America in
1984 as a student and went to the
University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. I am married to my wife,
Joy and have two great daughters,
my youngest being just 3 years old.
Explain your experience as a
small business owner:
I owned an insurance agency
Mirza Group, Inc. from 1991 until

2010. Now I am in PR and business consulting since 2013. My

current business is Mirza Strategies and Public Relations, Inc.
Do you have any prior political
experience?
I am the former Director of Minority and Women Business Enterprise in Nassau County. I conducted a disparity study and developed
a plan to increase the participation
of Women and Minority owned
businesses in obtaining government contracts by 100% within a
short period of time. I am also a
former Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Democratic Party.
Why are you running for Congress?
I am running because of the
sheer urgency of NOW. Our political system is getting increasingly
corrupt, our elected officials are
heavily influenced by big money
and are increasingly under the
influence of lobbyists and big
corporations. Residents are constantly ignored. Many politicians
are already in jail - and many
more are under investigation. I
am not a career politician. I am

Have you ever tried to hang

a picture and the wall just
chips or you went to hang
some blinds and found you
couldnt get a screw into the
metal frame? This week I will
try and help you out with
some of those issues.
Hanging pictures or shelves
on plaster walls: This is a
common problem, the solution is actually simple.
1- Place a piece of masking
or painter's tape where youre
looking to hang your picture/
shelf and mark your center.
2- Place additional tape
around the area where your
center mark is covering about
a 2 area.
3- Drill a hole on your
center mark. Drill bit should
be a hair smaller than your
anchor.
4- Repeat steps 1 through

Page 33

Just
Hanging
3 if more than one anchor is
needed.
5- Gently tap your anchor
into the hole using a hammer.
6- Put the proper size screw
in the anchor and youre
ready to hang your picture/
shelf.
Hanging blinds in metal
window frames: I have had
many customers complain
to me about the difficulty of
doing this. However like anything else, its really easy
when you know how.
1- You will need to get some
self-tapping screws (about
the same size as the screws
that came with your blinds).
2- Placing the blind bracket
where it needs to be mounted, mark the holes using a
pencil.
3- Using a drill with a screwdriver tip, run your self-tapping screws into the holes
you marked.

4- Remove the screws and

place your bracket in place,
taping it to free up your hands.
5- The holes on the blind
brackets are usually very
small, so use a standard
screwdriver (4-in-1 screwdrivers are usually too big) to
put your screws in by hand.
Do not over tighten; plastic brackets will pull out of
shape.

6- Put your blinds in place

and enjoy some shade/privacy.
I hope this helped guide
you through a few of those
little tasks that you have been
dreading.

Skincare Tips for the Summer

By Asma Ahmed, DO
Dermatology Resident*, St. Johns Episcopal Hospital
New Yorkers love to spend their time outdoors during the summer after wearing thick
layers and coats for months. However, with
shorts, sandals, and bathing suits comes the
dangers of overexposure to the suns harmful UV rays. Taking preventive measures by
taking care of your skin will not only protect
you from the suns known effects in causing
skin cancer, but also prevent general signs of
aging, such as wrinkles, freckles, and uneven
pigmentation. The proven way to protect your
skin is to wear a sunscreen with both UVA and
UVB blocking properties every single day, and
to reapply often.

Understanding how to read sunscreen labels

can help you find the right product for your
needs. Sunscreens that have broad spectrum and water resistant on their labels
are recommended by the American Academy
of Dermatology. If the sunscreen offers water
resistance, you will see 40 minutes or 80
minutes after the words water resistant.
This tells you how long your skin can be wet
or sweaty before you need to reapply. The
word sunblock is no longer being used since
it is considered misleading, and manufacturers are required to use the word sunscreen
on the label.

From creams, wipes, powders, to sticks, sunscreens come in so many different formulations these days; there really is no excuse not
to use one. For those who are prone to acne
breakouts, look for products that are oil-free
and noncomedogenic. Sprays are convenient
because they can be applied in seconds, but
just remember to apply a thick coat to get
full coverage. Also, consider applying an
antioxidant serum that has ingredients such
as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, or green tea before
applying sunscreen to help fight free radicals
and boost sun protection. Clothing, including
broad rim hats, also provide protection from
the sun. Dark and bright colors give the most
protection. If the fabric is thin and can be seen
through, then UV rays are penetrable as well.
Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 2pm
when the suns UV rays are the most intense.

Without proper sun protection, you may get a

burn that can become red and painful. The first
thing you should do is move indoors if possible,
or to a shaded area. Apply a cool, damp towel
several times daily for about ten minutes or
take frequent cool showers to help soothe
skin. Moisturizers that contain aloe vera or soy
help reduce discomfort. If very uncomfortable,
ibuprofen, aspirin, and topical hydrocortisone
may help decrease inflammation. Just one blistering sunburn doubles your risk of melanoma,
so it is important to monitor your skin yourself
or by a dermatologist for any skin changes.

JUNIOR HIGH JITTERS

Recently I asked my fifthgrade students to address a
topic I entitled, Junior High
Jitters. Their responses affected me profoundly and I
feel compelled to share them
with you. Many used the topic
to channel their disappointment, indignance, and feelings of inferiority after they
discovered that they were rejected or wait-listed by the
school of their choice.
Invariably, it appears that
the application process produces two things: triumphalism and despair, and both
are terribly dangerous for the
kids. Those who made it
are on a winners trajectory,
while the students deemed
inadequate, look upon
themselves as failures. Their
friends are thinking it, too.
(Some are even saying it). Its
hard to recover from this kind
of branding unless we adults
help. Weve got to tell them
its not the end of the world.
Life isnt triumph or disas-

ter. Its a little bit of both, and

theyd be wise to heed Rudyard Kipling and treat those
two imposters just the same.
We also need to realize that
ten-year-old fifth graders are
too young to just brush off
this kind of rejection- especially the fifth graders of PS/
MS 114 who have spent five or
six years in a school I can only
describe as wall-to-wall love,
and standing-room-only for
anything else, a place where
their egos have been handled
as carefully as eggshells. Selfdoubt replaces self-worth
the selection process changes
feelings of achievement into
failure for too many kids. In
addition, the kids are indignant and confused by what
they sense as injustice. I
worked so hard, Mrs. Diehl!
Why didnt I make it? He
didnt even do his homework
all year and he got in!
I told them my stories to
help them heal, stories about
some of my brightest students

who were overlooked by the

school of their choice. The
writing and the talks were a
catharsis for the kids. They
asked me to publish their
statements anonymously so
nobody laughs at us. But
weve got to do more. Perhaps the application process
could be adjusted so that the
opinions of the teachers who
know their fifth-graders are
appropriately weighed in the
selection process. Perhaps the
criteria for acceptance should
be made more explicit. If they
are looking for a pianist or a
soccer star, why not say so?
Maybe we need to build more
quality schools, since high
school seems to be a problem
for the kids staying at PS 114.
For now, I ask the parents out
there to share my thoughts
with their children:
My first choice would be PS/
MS 114; you know I wouldnt
lie to you. Youll continue in
a safe and familiar environment taught by loving teach-

ers who are experts in their

field- teachers who know
you and know how to help
you- teachers who will even
stand on the front steps with
you reviewing math or science while you air your problems- teachers wholl stop
dead in their tracks if they see
a frown on your face and sit
with you until you smile. PS
114 is a school where you will
be looked upon with respect
by the younger kids for whom
you can be mentors and role
models. Its a school that is
supervised by a principal and
assistant principal whose first
concerns are teachers and
students. They have their priorities straight. Youll be the
big fish in the little pond. Opportunity is knocking- work
hard and doors will open for
you everywhere. I am proud to
call PS/MS 114 my home away
from home. You should be
proud too! --- Mrs. Joan Diehl

STUDENT RESPONSES:
*Its not fair. I had a good report card. I am smarter than
some kids who made it in.
All my life, my brother would
tell me Scholars is awesome.
All my hard work didnt pay
off. I tried for Scholars feeling good and confident. But
I got shut down and put on
the waiting list. I was as mad
as Bryce Harper striking out.
Maybe I can still get in? Nope!
I have my brothers calling me
stupid. Its thrown me off in
baseballI let a kid hit a walkoff to win the game! The other
students talk about going to a
new school. I get so sad having this conversation. Ever
since I didnt make it, I have
been thrown off in everything.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO
DO? All my friends are leaving.
It feels as horrible as a really
fast pitcher throwing it hard
and it nails you in the heart! I
feel like such a failure.
*Applying to JHS, I felt excited, hopeful and optimistic. I
was hopeful for new experiences in a new school. I was
optimistic about change. I applied to The Scholars AcademyI think our fifth grade
teachers should decide who
is accepted into a new school
because they spend the most
time with us. I also feel that
schools shouldnt only use the
results of the citywide tests. I
suffer from text anxiety, and
do not do well on the citywides. Anyway, I got a letter
in the mail from The Scholars Academy, and I was not
accepted. I feel disappointed,
like I let myself down. I did
not even want to write this essay because it brings out too
many negative feelings for me!
I get good grades on my report
card, but that did not get me in
to Scholars. I have perfect attendance two years running,
but that did not help me get
into Scholars. I am good at almost every sport, but that did
not help me get into Scholars.
I am a good person with a big
heart, but that did not help
me. Come September, I will
be going to the same school,
so I do not and will not have
JHS jitters!

THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 2016

*I think the teachers should
pick. If the teachers would
have picked I know I would
have gotten in. Some people
do no work and they still got
into certain schools. I think the
criteria should be attendance,
participation and schoolwork.
I think this year they picked
the wrong students. I think the
interviews should have been
longer. How can people get to
know someone in three minutes? I think were too young
to handle hard situations like
this.
*I worked so hard. I know a
lot of kids who deserve to get
where they wanted but they
didnt. I tried really hard to
get really good grades. Even
though I may not get the best
grades in the class, I am good
at writing. Also, I am a super-duper, talented, superlative, award-winning innovative artist. Scholars would
be astonished by my art techniques. I am very respectful
to my teachers and they adore
me because I pay attention in
every class. Why did SHE get
in and not me? I think I should
have gotten my wish, because
I have been waiting for this for
so long.
*As sweat beads run down
my forehead, I sit and wait to
be called for my interview at
Scholars Academy. I ask myself, Why do they want to interview me? Its not like they
can know every single, solitary
thing about me in five minutes. I think interviews for
Junior High are unnecessary.
A dialogue with an unfamiliar
teacher should not impact my
future. To be honest, I think
our teachers should decide.
There are students who work
their butts off all year round
and others who do not do any
work. How do they get into the
same school? ITS JUST NOT
FAIR!!
*My letter came in the mail
one day not too long ago. I
called my mom right away and
asked if I could open the letter. I was as excited as a dog
whose owners had just come
back from vacation. I didnt
stop thinking about the letter
for one second. However, the

more I thought about it, the

more nervous I got. By the time
my mom got home, I was as
nervous as a mother if one of
her kids went to the hospital.
I was so scared that my mom
had to open the letter for me.
As soon as I looked at it I was
devastated. We are sorry to
inform you but your daughter
did not get into Scholars. I
was so upset I thought I would
never stop being upset. But,
as I thought about the situation, I realized I wasnt meant
to get into Scholars after all
because PS/MS 114 is the best
school I have ever been in.
*I am devastated. I did not
get in. A lot of smart kids got
accepted, but not me. I feel
mixed emotions: sad, mad
and annoyedmad as a bull,
as sad as a child who lost his
money, and as annoyed as a
teased dog. This is so stressful not getting into a school
that I really wanted to go to.
I feel like a failure. I feel like
a goat head-butted me out of
his pen. I am really devastated
about not getting in.
*As fast as a roadrunner, I
bike home. MOM! I yell so
loudly you can hear it in Canada. Did I get into Scholars? I do not know the package is right here. I rip through
the package like a lion attacking its prey. When I open the
package, I read, Thank you
for trying out for the Scholars
Academy but unfortunately you have been placed on
the waiting list. Noooo! I
scream as I run into my room.
I feel as If the whole world has
collapsed on me. It was hard
to tell my friends but God
does things for a reason and
I hope His reason is a good
thing.
*A rush of adrenaline filled
my mind, as I opened the
mailbox to see what my lifes
worth of work had led up to.
I ripped open the letter to see
two life-killing words: Not
Accepted. That was Mark
Twain. With a face as red as a
cherry, I yelled with rage. Then
another letter was passed on
to me. I opened the letter and
it said, Accepted. Welcome to
Scholars Academy. A blast of

Page 41
exultation filled me and I ran
up the stairs into my parents
bedroom and said, I made
it. I made it into Scholars!
I wondered, should I tell my
mom about the other letter?
*My heart beat as loud as a
drum as I held the white envelope in my hand. It seemed
as if it was staring at me, with
fiery red eyes and a knife-like
teeth. As I opened the letter,
I was more nervous than getting my report card or taking the ELA test. I thought
my eyes would pop out of my
head. When I read the paper
that said I didnt get into Mark
Twain, I thought the world was
ending and a monster was eating me up.
*I ripped open that letter as if
I was ripping open a birthday
present. I read and reread the
opening paragraph. I did it! I
did it! I made it into Scholars! I
jumped up and down like a kid
in Candyland. I am very lucky
to be going to Scholars, and
Scholars is very lucky to have
me as a student!
*I remember the morning
that I had to try out for Mark
Twain. I was more nervous than a cow going into a
slaughterhouse. It was early
in the morning and it looked
like someone turned on the
shower. During the actual
try-outs I got focused and
shook off the nerves like a
dog shaking off the water
from his fur. I just did the best
I could. I walked out of there
feeling pretty confident, like
a marathon runner who had
just finished the race in record time. I smiled up at my
dad who came to pick me up
and said, I think I nailed it!
Now, the waiting began. The
nerves started coming back
with each passing week. Maybe I hadnt done as well as I
thought? The waiting was like
sitting in a doctors office and
not knowing if I was going to
get a painful shot in my arm
or not. Finally, one day I got
the envelope. Inside was my
future. I ripped it open like
it was a bag of Doritos and I
was starving. I made it in! I was
so ecstatic I thought I just won
the lottery!

Creating Sacred Space

Space is what we all strive for

in life, however, it is often difficult to find the time to slow
down with our busy work,
school, social and family life.
Creating space can be one of
the most rewarding gifts you
can give to yourself and others
for peace of mind and a healthy
body. There are many areas in
our lives where we could use
some space. For some, it is
purging the materialistic things,
for others, it is making time for
friends, for many, it is simply to
have time alone to connect to a
sacred space, that which is higher than yourself. There are so

many places in our lives to clear

space and just be in a place that
requires little effort.
Perhaps you could start with
uncluttering an area in your
home where you could sit and
read, meditate, do yoga or simply just be with your thoughts.
The space should not be cluttered and less is more. You
could make an altar of a few
things that bring you happiness.
For example, in my home, I
have an altar with a photo of my
Dad, a statue of a Blessed Mother, a Buddha, a few crystals, an
angel, essential oil and a special
candle. When I sit to meditate

The Arbor Gallery on Rockaway Beach Boulevard has some

amazing art work and fitting right in was the short worn by Timmy
Burke (who, by the way, took the shot of the bike we used on the
cover of the Summer Guide).
I am in the presence of some
of my favorite memories and
they become part of my sacred
space. I honor them and they
give me such joy and peace. It
becomes a place where I count
my blessings and feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for all
that I have in my life. The space
is clean, empty and open. Simplicity is key.
Once you have this space to
go to, you will begin to create
freedom in your mind, body
and soul. It will become a healing sanctuary in your very own
home, devoid of distractions.
This area should be a place that
allows you to be alone with
yourself in the quiet immensity
of your soul. There may be interruptions but thats ok, this is
life. Practice how you respond
to noise and chatter. Become the
witness without judging. Connect to your space and let go of
disturbances. Yoga is a great way
to connect to the spaciousness
within your body. We often repeat the phrase in yoga, we use
the poses to get into our body.
There are many sacred places
you can visit such as a church, a

temple, a garden, the ocean, the

forest, a yoga studio or perhaps
a spa. There is a special connection to God in these spaces and
the energy is incredible. It is in
this space that you will find your
serenity and calm. You will begin to listen, really listen to the
quiet voices from within. Silence speaks volumes.
Recently, I was fortunate
to retreat into the mountains
with 21 beautiful souls. We
had silence for a short period
and I cannot begin to tell you
the impact it had on me. It
changed me in a very positive
way, but it was not easy to listen to the inner voice. Space
creates a rich inner environment. It makes you feel safe, at
ease and most certainly peaceful. It is a slow process but it
can change your perception of
the world.
May you find peace, health,
happiness and love in your
heart, soul and mind. Take time
to clear a special space where
you can sit, reflect and bask in
life. We are so blessed to be in
this space. Be open to the miraculous discovery from within.

Rockstock & Barrels Surf Contest Recap

What a great day all around,
with this now massive event
of Rockstock & Barrels. We
were greeted with some OK
waves in the 2-3 size and
some chest high sets on
the occasion. I had a little
trouble in the set-up which
caused a delay, some tent
legs wouldnt work and the
P.A. I bought for the Rockaway Beach Surfers Association decided not to work after
charging the battery for a few
days, ho hum. But that didnt
stop the action in the water.
The idea to do away with
quarters, semis and finals
made the day so much more
fluid, and this could be a go
to format for future contests
held by the Rockaway Beach
Surfers Association. The
one-hour EXPRESSION SESSION with the BEST WAVE
WINNING was interesting in

that 3 out of the 4 sessions

had the heat winner getting
the top ride inside the last
10 minutes of the hour long
heat. Interesting when you
think about how riders have
to come up with two magic
rides inside 15-20 minutes
heats at regular contests.
Winners in each of the Divisions were Jeff Anthony
in Mens, this was only because his dad was judging,
I clearly had the win, but
you know, thats bias for you
;-). Boys 16 & Under was a
greatly contested event with
a see-saw battle between the
Long Beach twins, Kyle and
Drew
Caracciolo against
Sandon Karinsky. Judges
told me that Sandon was in
the lead for most of the heat
until Kyle found a wave to
smack 4 turns out of it and
securing the win in the last
minutes.
The Girls 16 & Under was
rough going as the conditions worsened with gusting
onshore winds, lower tide

and an influx of kookery in

the lineup, most likely from
Brooklyn. Eventual winner
was O.G. 13 year old Kailani
Mergen who came back to
Rockaway after 6-8 months
in California with her family,
where she won multiple contests out there and trained
on the schools surf team.
The heat of the day though
went to the Womens event.
With the tide bottoming
out even further and creating critical sections for
the women, the competiveness came on strong. Ashley

Wood came out with the first

blow, scoring a super long
ride through various sections that put her way into
the lead. Then Casey Mergen
hit back with a nice flowing
ride and throwing in a few
tricks like a pirouette at the
end of her ride. Bridget Klapinski came back with a solid
ride to have the scores even
across the board. It wasnt
until the dying moments that
Bridget pulled out a gem of a
left that had the lip dancing
on her back as she heroically held on to the very end of
the wave, only just bettering
her previous score to take
the win!
Thanks to all the competitors and testing out this new
contest format and also for
the RBSA board members
who were on hand to help,
Jeff Anthony, Conrad Karl
and Rick Anthony. Biggest
thanks goes to the man, Jimmy Dowd, for all the efforts
and strengths to put on such
a rockin day! Cheers buddy!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS ROCKAWAY WALKS 2016.

Rockaway Walks is celebrating
10 years of excellence in community service to Far Rockaway,
District 31 and New York City.
This has been accomplished under the leadership of Councilman Donovan Richards starting
when he was the chief of staff to
the current State Senator, James
Sanders and Steven C. McCartney MS Exercise Physiology
(NYC Physical Education Teacher/Rockaway Walks Fitness Columnist and Author - Feathered
Quill 2016 Book Award Teen/
Young Adult Physical Literacy
12 Steps Pledge Ambassadorship). When Donovan Richards
looked within the community for
solutions to address the health

disparities that are associated

with residents of Far Rockaway
it was a natural progression for
Mr. McCartney to act as a humanitarian (2015 NYC Council
Proclamation) and founded the
Free supervised exercise program known as Rockaway Walks.
In celebrating Rockaway Walks
10 years we look at the positive
impact this program has provided to our residents and community at large.
What you can expect next after
this summer season for Rockaway Walks is a free 10 week indoor weight training program
this winter for adults and teens
at the Far Rockaway High School
Campus on Saturdays.

During the 2016 season of

Rockaway Walks we will distribute over 200 pedometers and
focus on Physical Literacy- Exploration, Adaptation, and Performance. In addition, Rockaway Walks will focus on goal
setting to help individuals and
families, young and old, reach
specific, realistic, achievable and
measurable health/ fitness goals.
For example: Understanding the
use of a pedometer, the importance of having a nutritional diet
and the effect on chronic diseases or learning how to manage
your weight by caloric intake versus daily activity intensity. Learn
more on how to work out smarter.
Come join the growing family of

Rockaway Walks every Saturday

beginning June 25th and running
through August 27th at Beach
19th Street on the Boardwalk in
Far Rockaway. Open to all fitness
levels. Start time 8 am. For more

Golf Advice
PROPER IMPACT POSITION

low the following advice. I suggest you cut this article out of
paper and keep it handy so you
can refer to it.
Impact position for more
consistent center club face
through the ball. For this to
be accomplished consistently, I advise you to practice
"POWER CHIPPING" 9 iron or
PW.
Set up to a chip shot as
you normally would (narrow stance, front foot slightly
open back foot stays in same
position as it was in set up.
If you would look down you
should see front foot turned
to left slightly and back foot is
perpendicular. Next advice is
extremely important-- 70% of
your weight is on your front
side and foot and your hands
holding the club is ahead of
the ball. This position remains through the chipping
motion. We are looking for
a descending strike of club
head through back of ball and
this setup will ensure that.
Now place ball back in your
stance almost even with the
instep of your rear foot. Take
the club back without breaking your wrists! Only swing
the club back a couple of feet
and then when you swing the
club back to the ball make
sure your LEFT WRIST is Flat

at impact and your RIGHT

WRIST is bent or concave. At
the finish of your chipping
swing stop and check that the
above look has happened. If
it didn't, keep practicing this
motion until you can do it
consistently. That is critical.
Don't be concerned about
the results. Just concern yourself with the action of your
wrists thru impact. After much
practice with the above, move
up to longer swings while still
making sure your left wrist is
flat at impact and your right
wrist is bent.
Please take this info and
work on it. All good ball
strikers hit through the ball
with a flat left wrist at impact
through the back of the ball
and through. You will have
more accurate results with
due diligence and reap the
rewards and satisfaction of
longer and more accurate results.
Next week we will enter indepth for a few weeks, the
game within the game: putting.
Remember a good chipper and
a good putter will always make
up for any areas that you are
having difficulty with.
Have a great week, and wear
sun block.

Instructor)

The Pipeline: Shedding Light on Surfing

By Katie McFadden

Surfing is one of the pieces that

make up the heart of Rockaway.
If youre not a surfer yourself, you
have a friend or family member
that is one. Locals have long utilized the local waves to practice
one of their favorite sports but
in recent decades, the secret has
gotten out and more have discovered this surfing suburb right
in the corner of the urban jungle
that is New York City. As NYCs
only designated surfing beach,
Rockaway is a surfer hotspot for
both locals and visitors and the
surf culture is continuously growing. From surf shops to schools
to organizations, its time to shed
some light on some of the aspects
that make up the surf town of
Rockaway.
Rockaway has a rich history
of surfing and it is now home to
several surf shops, surf schools,
surfer hangouts, events, organizations, paddleboard schools
and more. Over the summer, and
maybe beyond (after all, true surf-

ers seek out waves all year), well

be running a weekly surf column
that profiles a different aspect of
surfing, along with a surf forecast
to get you through the week.
What draws so many to the
sport? Theres no other feeling
like the satisfaction of getting a
good ride after waiting for a wave,
Mike Reinhardt, co-founder
of Locals Surf School said. Its a
sublime experience. I enjoy it for
the physical aspect as its a great
workout, the spiritual aspect as
you feel one with the ocean and
the social aspect of being out on
the water with friends. Steve
OSullivan, a longtime local surfer who has a Surfline surf cam
installed on his property says,
Surfing is one of those things
that is so enjoyable and when you
experience it, you understand
why people do it and why they go
to the length to go for the sport.
What makes Rockaway a good
surf spot? According to Andrew
Dima and Nigel Louis, co-owners of the new surf shop Station

Good
to Know

By Rita Tortorelli

RBNY, Its proximity to the city,

the ease of access to get here and
the fact that the waves can get really fun here." OSullivan adds,
Rockaway is a diamond in the
rough, maybe not so much now
because its being dusted off, but
Rockaway is a great resource and
the stretch of beach here is one of
the nicest ones anywhere really.
Its as good as anywhere when the
conditions are right. "
Reinhardt, OSullivan, Dima
and Louis have noticed that the
waves are continuously getting
more crowded, but there is a silver lining to the crowds. There
are more crowds in the water
which can create tension, but at
the same time its giving this vi-

brancy to the livelihood of the

community since people are
spending money, starting local
businesses and students who are
learning to surf are having epiphanies and are starting to move
here. Economically and socially,
surfing is having a positive impact here," Reinhardt said.
I am happy to see what is
happening out here and I think
as long as the community benefits from the influx of money and
the visitors are respectful of the
neighborhood, Im good," Dima
said. OSullivan adds, Overcrowding can be frustrating but
you have to take the good with
the bad and the town as a whole
has improved dramatically. I
like my town as whole as it is in
now. "
Boarders, the surf shop on
Beach 92nd Street, that helped
spur the Rockaway Beach surfing boom, reports that all of its
more than 100 of surfboard lockers are rentedjust another sign
that surfs up, way up.

WOERNERS WORLD
TOP OF THE TOP 10 HOOP PLAYERS
By Ryan Patrick Woerner

Ah, the age old quarrel of

whose era was better than
whose. "When I was your age
Kennedy's was a barn. We
also took a ferry down to the
Peninsula that cost a nickel.
And they even let us smoke in
the bars!" I cannot speak for
everyone from my generation,
but I have certainly heard this
diatribe more than once from
local Baby Boomers who treat
the Budweiser tap like a water
fountain. Not safe from such
generational comparisons is
our beloved game of basketball, which is often subject to
Issac Newton-level analysis
when determining how ballplayers stack up to those they
could never share the hardwood with. Big picture: Lebron
or MJ? (more appropriately
posed as Magic or Lebron?)
Chamberlain or Shaq? Bird or
the field? Local picture: Butigan or Peterson? Marquardt or
Boyle (the Boyle who was AA
CHSAA Championship MVP)?
While such prompts always
garner long-winded responses, they are far too subjective
to be answered definitively.
The final installment of the
Peninsulas Top 10 Basketball
Players of All-Time is a tribute
to the primal era of Rockaway
Basketball, when guys named
Alcindor and Dunleavy would
take municipal transport to
the Riis Park to play pick-up
games in the oppressive August heat. Saturday mornings
were for pacing the de Sales
blacktop, where it didnt matter your age or gender if you
had next, that meant you and
your squad got to sweat out
last nights sacrament while
passing the brown orb around.
There are many who deserved
to be in consideration for the
Peninsula's basketball royalty. Let's not forget, there was
a time when John Andariese
served as commissioner of the
Breezy Point Summer League
and Bugsy had the Summer
Classic running under an
NCAA sanction. The three individuals listed below stood

the test of time, forever commanding the respect as basketball pioneers in our vaunted beachfront community.
#3 Brian Winters, 6'4" SG,
University of South Carolina
(Archbishop Molloy)
It may surprise some that
with his Rockaway roots and
eight years spent hooping in
Milwaukee, Winters did not
cultivate a career as a Williamsburg craft-brewmaster,
but that is a conversation for
a different day. I want to put
aside for a moment the fact
that he carried an NBA career scoring average of over
16 points per game. This guy
had a wicked beard, and his
YouTube basketball highlights
are set to "Riding Into The
Sun" by Def Leppard, both of
which are impressive in their
own right. Winters played in
an era when NBA All-Stars (a
distinction he earned twice)
sold cars in the off-season, so
his premature retirement at
the age of 30 should not come
as a complete shock. The
definition of a long-armed
positional tweener, Winters
perfected the pump fake/
one-dribble pull-up jumper that seems lost in today's
game of dunk contest acrobatics and trick-shot three
pointers. The over-sized
guard was integral in paving
Coach Jack Curran's Rockaway pipeline, beginning what
amounted to a nearly 30-year
streak of having at least one
sandy-shoes kid in the Briarwood school's Varsity starting
lineup. Speaking candidly, you
do not see Winters popping
his head around the parish
that spring boarded his career
much these days. Like many

others who have found success

in other circles (and a long career in coaching), maybe he
has found other postal codes
to identify with. Nonetheless, that trademark Rockaway
wise-guy smirk is pervasive
in footage of his professional
highlights. He can't ditch that,
nor can he shake the "Rockaway, NY" from his biography
page.
#2 Nancy Lieberman, 5'10"
G, Old Dominion (Far Rockaway H.S.)
Before anyone writes a Letter
to the Editor next week voicing eligibility concerns, let's
remember that "Lady Magic" played her CYO ball at St.
Francis de Sales. There's even
rumor that the no-nonsense
blonde challenged a United
States Olympic team to a contest with her high school CYO
squad. When asked about her
time on the beach, Lieberman replied, "I loved every
moment of every game at St.
Francis de Sales. It toughened me up." That it did.
The sport took Nancy to four
continents before the age of
20, and in the meantime she
nearly managed a career triple-double at the university
level (2,430 Points, 1167 Rebounds, 961 Assists). To no
fault of her own, she missed
two luxury cruises in her career due to timing: the WNBA,
which did not form until her
39th birthday, and the 1980
Olympics, which were boycotted under the direction of
President Jimmy Carter. Still
one of the most decorated
players in women's basketball history, Lieberman has
the rare distinction of being a
member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. All of
those fancy aside, let's throw
her kudos for something a tad
more relevant on the homefront. As a Jewish girl in the
70's, she daringly took her bike
uptown to Beach 129th Street
and earned respect from anyone who crossed her path. The
memories are a bit clouded,
but some even say that on the
hottest of days, she gave some

of our 55-60 male readership

demographic fits on the court.
#1 Dick McGuire, 6'0" PG,
St. John's/Dartmouth (LaSalle
Academy)
They called it "McGuire
Court." Beach 108th Street,
the site of the public school,
where later, many Featherston-run "Rock Park" sessions
went down, the court had its
heyday when brothers Dick
and Al commandeered the
half-court games in the summer months. Dalton's Seaside Grill was McGuire's Bar
then, and Dick would egress
from his basement quarters
on a daily basis to dominate
play on the courts located just
steps from his humble abode.
Forget the seven NBA All-Star
Game appearances, his two
Haggerty Awards, or even
the fact that his #15 was retired by the Knicks. I would
prefer to remember that
his contemporaries would
wake up on weekend mornings and head to a court not
named after a famous politician or Civil War hero,
but a scrawny Irish kid who
lived up the block. Cousy
and Heinsohn would come
down to play before revelers
at Fitzgerald's on the corner, but something tells me
McGuire got the best of even
them on his home pavement.
Dick McGuire represents all
that was ever right with the
Rockaway basketball scene.
Sure, his Knick squads
made three straight NBA Finals from 1951 to 1953, but
"Tricky Dicky" still made a
point to spend his summers
in the bungalows, banging
around on the blacktop with
the same beer-breathed guys
from the neighborhood. Dick
died back in 2010, but certainly did not forget his roots.
The New York Times obituary
announcement read, "From a
Home Court in Queens, to the
NBA." That is something Rockaway can for sure be proud of.

hard to find. Ryanpatrick.woerner1@gmail.com

Rockaway Little League

BRACKETS TAKE SHAPE; CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES BEGIN SATURDAY
After ten weeks of regular season action and two weeks of
double-elimination tournament
play, only a few teams are left
standing in each competitive
division. While some top seeds
have advanced to the Championship round, the rise of the AKB
Security Rockies in Major Boys
has been stunning and sudden.
For the very five innings of the
post-season, the Rockies were not
a very good team. Since then, they
have been unbeatable. After rallying from a six-run deficit to edge
the Ram Title Pirates 11-10 in the
opening round, the Rockies drastically outslugged the hard-hitting
DriveSafe Mariners, 25-4, and
outpitched the ace-laden Conte Carpet Royals, 3-2. That puts
the Rockies, the number three
seed, in the Championship round
while the top-seeded Royals and
fourth-seeded Metalman Sales
Orioles must fight it out of the losers bracket for a chance at the big
dance. The Orioles advanced to
the losers bracket final by rallying
past the Ridgewood Savings As
Monday night, 8-7.
On the ladies side, the top-seeded Graybeards Bonnies advanced
to the Championship round with a
12-5 victory over the Walsh Properties Flippers, the #2 seed. The
game was highlighted by excellent pitching performances, timely hitting and incredible fielding
displays. In the top of the first,
the Flippers put up three runs on
a home run by league MVP candidate Morgan Connolly. The
Bonnies answered back in the
bottom of the frame by putting
across seven runs of their own
highlighted by a grand slam off
the bat of Tori Mullen. The game
was now 7-3. The balance of the
game was a back-and-forth grind
between two equally competent
teams. The final five innings were
highlighted by another home run
by Tori Mullen as well as excellent fielding by both teams. The
Bonnies made three outstanding
fielding gems to thwart Flipper
rallies. Caisey Heyman made an
outstanding catch in left field to
rob one of the leagues best hitters, Margaret Murray. Kaitlin
Nestor started a double play by
snaring a line drive at short stop.
Most notably though was a beau-

tifully executed relay started by AJ

Crowley in left-center that ended
with Bridget Donnelly throwing
to catcher Alex Cook to get a runner at home.
As often is the case, the pitchers
controlled the game. The Flippers
Margaret Murray and Morgan
Connolly and the Bonnies duo of
Alex Cook and Tori Mullen should
all be commended for very strong
performances in the circle. They
exhibited tremendous poise and
athleticism while leading their respective teams.
To earn another shot at the
Graybeards girls, the Walsh Flippers needed to knock off the Stop
& Shop Pandas in a do-or-die
matchup on Tuesday. The Pandas
advanced to the losers bracket final by winning a tense, back-andforth struggle with the St. Johns
Episcopal Hospital Tigers, 16-13.
Maura Edwards had a bases-clearing double to put the Tigers ahead
late but the Pandas came back the
next inning. In the sixth, the Tigers
staged a two-out rally but it was
ended by the Pandas heads up
play in the outfield. The Pandas
were powered by Brooke Leahy,
Kelly Erhard, Diane Erhard, Olivia Stack and Kayleigh McMahon.
They got key offense contributions from Jamie Kinneary, Jenna
and Jada Strika, Mary Youngberg,
Kathleen Conti and Sarah Doda.
There were strong pitching performances from the Erhard girls and
Jamie Kinneary.
The Tigers made it to that game
by coming out swinging in an
elimination game victory over the
Knights of Columbus Hilltoppers.
Noelle Cook led the charge. Abbey Tubridy went 3-3. Alex Conaboy and Chloe Murphy tripled
and showed off their speed on the
base paths. Maeve Murnan continued to hit the ball well, but it
was the defense and pitching that
stole the show. Alisa Mastrandrea
pitched lights out for three innings.

Alisa had some help behind her

with Fiona Mullen playing shortstop and making some amazing grabs. The strong catching
tandem of Lauren D'Orazio and
Cece Agoglia kept the Hilltoppers
quiet on the base paths. Hanna
Mills, Samantha Rodino and Allie
D'Orazio contributed as well in
the field and at the plate
In Minor Girls, the St. Johns
Hospital Blue Devils, seeded second, grabbed control of the tournament with two wins, including
an 11-7 upset of the regular season champions.
The Blue Devils fought through
a tough first round playoff game
against the Denis OConnor Huskies, ending with a victory 13-6.
There was great hitting by Mary
Doyle followed by huge hits by Ellen Zwerling, Delaney Sommervile and Carly Intrabartolo. Cassie McDade had a strong game
at third base, including an unbelievable stop of a blast from one of
the Huskies big hitters. The Blue
Devils got strong outfield play from

Riley Mills, Maeve Grace, Summer

Duffy and Shea McKeefrey. Nora
Tubridy closed the game with a
couple of strong innings pitched.
The Blue Devils continued on
their winning streak by knocking
off the top-seeded Currans Meats
Irish by a score of 11-7. Mary
Doyle pitched three strong innings
pitched with continued support at
the bat by Payton Sheridan, Riley
Mills and Shea McKeefrey. Maeve
Grace set the table and was followed
by some long shots to the outfield by
Mary Doyle. Jacqueline Doda had a
great play in center field stopping a
huge hit. Carly Intrabartolo ended
the nail-biting game on the pitchers mound, catching a pop up for
the final out. The Irish and Huskies will play an elimination game to
see who joins the Blue Devils in the
Championship round.
