GUIDELINES FOR LEARNING OUTCOMES 1 AND 2 (Individual Papers)

These two requirements are more than reflection papers. They must contain a thoughtful
analysis of the situations described below. You must also have at least three (3) references for
each paper, which should be cited properly, using the APA Style. To learn about the APA Style of
citation, visit https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
These requirements are posted at this time because we needed to take up topics in leadership,
communication, and organizational culture in class first, so that you would become equipped to
prepare the required papers.
Kindly take responsibility for meeting the deadlines on these requirements. Each paper is
worth 15% of your final grade.
Learning Outcome 1 must be submitted in printed form (hard copy) on or before Friday, 15 July
2016, 5:00pm.
Learning Outcome 2 must be submitted in printed form (hard copy) on or before Friday, 22 July
2016, 5:00pm.
You may have them received at the Management and Organization Department (MOD) office,
located at the ground floor of the Faculty Center.
The format for each paper is: short bond paper, 1-inch margins all around, 12-pt. Arial or Calibri
font, 1.5 spacing. Minimum page length is 3 pages per paper (including reference page). You
may exceed 3 pages.
A. Learning Outcome 1
This paper is a self-assessment in an organizational setting (as we discussed in class, an
organization includes not only the school organization to which you belong, but also your
family, your classes this term or in past terms, your church group, your closest group of friends,
or your athletic team, where members' roles are clearly defined).
Think of an organization to which you belong that has a significant impact in your life right now
(it could be a student org at DLSU, or your most interesting/most challenging class this term, or
your church group/athletic team, or your closest group of friends, or your family). With this
organization in mind, answer the following questions/statements:
1. Describe your status and role in the organization at present. Use the definitions given by
John Newstrom in his book "Organizational Behavior: Human Behavior at Work" (or you
may use a book on organizational behavior written by another author) as basis for your
answer.

2. Describe either of the following: the problems/challenges faced by your organization at

present; or in the alternative, the problems/challenges you are facing as a member of
that organization, whichever has a greater impact on your overall well-being at present.
Use Newstrom's book and your MANAORG book, Bruno Dyck and Mitchell Neubert's
"Management" (or you may use a book on management written by another author) to
determine what type of problem/s your organization is facing, in terms of the four
management functions. You may use other reference/s to help you answer more fully.
3. Describe an ethical dilemma which you, or organizational members in general, face
within the organization. Is it an ongoing dilemma for you, or for organizational members
in general? How do/did you choose to handle it? What are/were the choices open to
you? Describe your thought processes and emotions as you experience/d this dilemma,
particularly those that involved a choice between "what is right and what is easy," as JK
Rowling put it. You may use other reference/s to help you answer more fully.
4. With reference to item 3 above, did you seek, or are you seeking, help and/or advice
from adults you trusted or looked up to as role models? Why or why not? What have
you learned from/what are you learning from this experience? How has this experience
helped you to become more mature and more experienced in life? You may use other
reference/s to help you answer more fully.
5. With reference to items 1-3 above, what are your next steps as a member of this
organization? What is your plan of action for overcoming the conflicts/challenges/
problems you are facing/have faced in this organization? Do you think you will "quit"
being a member of this organization? Why or why not? You may use other reference/s
to help you answer more fully.

B. Learning Outcome 2
This paper involves reading the document, The Vocation of the Business Leader (4th Edition),
which is uploaded on our Facebook group page, and watching the movie, The True Cost,
(viewing link: http://putlocker.is/watch-the-true-cost-online-free-putlocker.html) as well as the
TED talk Photos that Bear Witness to Modern Slavery (viewing link:
http://www.ted.com/talks/lisa_kristine_glimpses_of_modern_day_slavery?language=en).
Answer the following questions:
1. Looking at the current business climate of your own country and those of other
countries, do you think there is a need for todays business leaders to reflect on their
purpose, and make appropriate adjustments in the direction their organizations are
taking? Why or why not?

2. Why should businesses offer goods which are truly good and services which truly
serve? Will the profitability of their businesses suffer if they do so? Why or why not?
3. Which side of the fast fashion debate do you side with? Are the demands of the
industry tantamount to exploiting workers and creating modern slavery, or do
workers still have valid and viable choices in earning their living? Why do you say so?
4. What, if anything, could an ordinary person do to stop the prevalence of modern slavery
in the world? How could we show our compassion for our fellow human beings who are
forced to work in inhumane conditions?
To help you understand the document, The Vocation of the Business Leader, these are the Six
Practical Principles for Business, which are rooted in respect for human dignity and pursuit of
the common good. Please be aware that this chart does NOT serve as a substitute for reading
The Vocation of the Business Leader -- you have to read that document to get a better idea of
what this chart discusses.
