Mathematicaldefinition
Aprecisedefinitionisgivenatdegreeofcoherence.
Thecoherencefunctionbetweentwosignals

theFouriertransformsofthecrosscorrelationandtheautocorrelationsignals,respectively.Forinstance,ifthe
signalsarefunctionsoftime,thecrosscorrelationisameasureofthesimilarityofthetwosignalsasafunctionof
thetimelagrelativetoeachotherandtheautocorrelationisameasureofthesimilarityofeachsignalwithitselfin
differentinstantsoftime.Inthiscasethecoherenceisafunctionoffrequency.Analogously,if
and

functionsofspace,thecrosscorrelationmeasuresthesimilarityoftwosignalsindifferentpointsinspaceandthe
autocorrelationsthesimilarityofthesignalrelativetoitselfforacertainseparationdistance.Inthatcase,
coherenceisafunctionofwavenumber(spatialfrequency).
Thecoherencevariesintheinterval

theyaretotallyuncorrelated.Ifalinearsystemisbeingmeasured,

Therefore,manyofthestandardmeasurementsofcoherenceareindirectmeasurements,eveninfieldswherethe
