2. A single angle 100X75X10 is connected to the gusset plate at the end with four 20mm-diameter bolts as shown in Fig. Determine the design tensile strength of the
angle. Assume that the yield and the ultimate stress of steel used are 250 MPa and 410
MPa, respectively.

5. A diagonal member of a roof truss carries a maximum pull of 300kN. Design the
section and its connection with a 16mm thick gusset plate. The length of the
connection is limited to 3.4m. Design the lug angle for reducing the length of
connection.
6. Design two equal angles, back to back connected to either side of the gusset plate
(Bolted) to act as a tie member of length 3.4 m in a roof truss to carry an axial load of
720kN. Here the tie is subjected to possible reversal of stress into compression
resulting from the action of wind or earthquake.
7. Design a bridge truss diagonal subjected to a factored tensile load of 450kN. The
length of the diagonal is 3.2 m. The tension member is connected to the gusset plate
of thickness 18mm with one line of 20mm diameter bolts.
8. Design an equal angle back to back connected to either side of the gusset plate
(Welded) to act as a tie member of length 3.4 m in a roof truss to carry an axial load
of 720kN, when subjected to possible reversal of stress into compression resulting
from the action of wind or earthquake.
9. Design a splice for tension member sections 160X10 mm and 250X14 mm. The
member is subjected to a factored tensile load 250kN. Assume Fe 410 grade of steel.
Provide 20 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 for making the connections. Sketch the
details o connection.
10. Design a tension member consisting of two unequal angles with long legs back to
back connected to either side of the gusset plate and bolted. The effective length of
member is 3.4 m in a roof truss and is subjected an axial load of 720kN. The tie is

subjected to possible reversal of stress into compression resulting from the action of
wind or earthquake.
11. Design an un equal angle with long leg connected to the gusset plate (Welded) to act
as a tie member of length 3.4 m in a roof truss to carry an axial load of 720kN. The tie
is subjected to possible reversal of stress into compression resulting from the action of
wind or earthquake.
12. Design a single angle to carry a tensile load of 600kN. Assume that the length of the
member is 3m. Use either welding or bolting.

13. Design sag rods for consecutive purlins near the supported end of a roof truss
system as shown in Fig. The purlins are supported at third points by sag rods.
Also design the tie rod between the ridge purlins. The c/c spacing of trusses is
5m, c/c spacing of purlins is 2 m, intensity of wind pressure is 1500 N/m2, slope of
the truss is 30o, self weight of roofing is 200 N/m2 and Grade of steel is Fe 410.

14. A Tee-section 3.6 m long has to support a load of 250kN. Design the section.
